It's honestly a crime that you only have 600 subs and less than 3k views. even if i wasnt using this information and the tools you're sharing for it i would just watch this for the fun of it.
AMAZING tutorial! I had such a great time and I'm now the official cartographer for my D&D campaign. I bookmarked this video and will come back to it again and again!
Oh my word, what a cool comment and I'm so sorry for taking ages to reply! This has made my day, I'd absolutely love to see your campaign map, have you posted it online anywhere? I'm so happy to have helped!
Thank you for this awesome tutorial! Having little to no drawing / coloring skills, I was able to make something I was proud of for our campaign (Genesys system homebrew fantasy world). Cheers!
@@MapsbyOwen first, so far I haven't been bored by you once - your humor, insights and tips keeps one pretty engaged. Second, the following is only my personal perspective, not the golden truth. To be watcher friendly and not too consuming on your time, how about something like this for the future; explain the list on the left briefly (one sentence is enough, it took me at least way too long before I really saw and understood it 🙈😁) and have a single all-climate video where you upload the whole process, but maybe sped up so your PC doesn't burn while uploading. It could be not listed and you link to it in videos like this. So even if you do a dwarf kingdom next you could have the edited and fast video (like this one) and link the mentioned one-time-uncut general video. Hope this makes sense. Have a great Sunday!
@@tktsumibito Great idea, might need a bigger hard drive! I just uploaded a new video which I hope is a better balance between drawing and speed, I'd be interested to know your thoughts. Thanks again!
Can you further explain how you did the coloring for the textures and sea? I’m completely new to procreate and can’t figure out how you were able to do it
The village tutorial is great but city building is much more vast. More Roads and homes on the same canvas. curious about sizing and brushes for a more detailed drawing.
Thank you for the thorough tutorial and providing the template and brushes. I’m going to spend my weekend playing with this. I’d love if you had more videos like this, maybe focusing on each element individually (mountains, shores, forests, etc). Cheers!
Hi Elon, i’m so glad you enjoyed it and thank you for taking the time to comment. Breaking down the elements into individual videos is definitely in my plans for future videos. I was thinking of doing separate versions for paper and Procreate. Anyway, thanks again!
@@MapsbyOwen I'll keep an eye out for future videos, and I really can't thank you enough for providing the template with the layers, that was so generous and is exactly the kind of thing that helps beginners get started. Do you mind explaining the difference between the Inker brush and Inker ST brush in the set you provided? And why/when you would choose one over another?
@@hemslonnigum hi Elon, great question on the brushes. It’s something I neglected to explain, the ST brush has streamlining turned on, this feature smooths out the lines so is great for drawing smooth curves. However, it is less useful for handwriting and intricate detail. To get a feel for the difference between the two, try writing in lowercase on your page with each brush, the “non ST” version should give a better result. I use ST (streamlining) for coastlines and some mountains and i use the other for trees and smaller details. Hope that helps!
I’m trying to apply this to a world I’m building, but the continent I’m focusing on has more rivers than lakes. Do you have any ideas on how to translate rivers to this map style?
Hi, sorry for my slow reply. I think you could add rivers using the same techniques as the coastline really, just make sure they generally merge, rather than split. Let me know if I can help further, or if there's a specific technique you'd like to see. Thanks for commenting!
GREAT tutorial! My map came out very well. I was curious how you go about text in procreate? Anything special? I see you had some curved text. And what are the limits you find best for how small can you read the text and such….
Hi Jeff, sorry for the slow reply. I expect you've figured it out by now... Anyway, text in Procreate sucks, I really prefer to export to photoshop for adding text, it's way easier (but of course is quite expensive). Thanks for your comment, I really appreciate it!
for android tablets, like a galaxy tab s8, what APP do you suggest? I'm trying to draw maps on Sketchbook, but some plugins are missing, like the drawing guides
Can you explain the letters next to some of the layers? (M, SL) When i get to the texture layer to insert the background image, its inserted above the outlines, but when you do it, its below the outlines despite the layer being ontop. Can someone help?
Hey Owen. Love your tutorial, used it for Photoshop but now gotten procreate. Wondering if one could get your brushes elsewhere or similar ones. I can see that procreate uses the same brush files as Photoshop and those can be gotten from pretty much anywhere on the net. I'm a bit hesitant, due to personal and unfortunate experiences handing my personal details to download your brush files. Would be nice with an alternative, even though I can understand that this is how you run your ship, I'd be glad for any help you can give me. Cheers!
Awesome information! Do you have anything explaining how to use the procreate features? My meaning; how were you able to select a lot of sections and color just those? How you're using the procreate features is a huge level of efficiency that is impressive!
Hi Miller, thank you for your comment. I used the selection tool. It is in the 4 tool menus at the top of the screen on the left, it's a kind of S shape circular icon. That enables you to select specific items on the screen, often I select the negative space and use the invert tool which is in the menu at the bottom, once you have made a selection. Sorry for the wordy answer, I hope that helps. I do plan to do many more procreate videos, but there are lots out there about using the app's specific tools already
So when I draw on an ipad, I am often zooming in and out. When you zoom like that, it can be tricky to keep items the same size on the canvas, so having the grid helps me scale my trees and mountains so they are all kind of uniform on the page. Hope that helps, thanks for watching!
Ipad processor/ram limitation, ipad pro for example might have more layers available at that resolution (but basically the bigger file resolution the less layers you can use)
Hahaha, sorry Roberto, it's all a bit quick and probably takes a bit of practice to get right. I'd love to see your efforts though if you want to share them!
I get that you're probably aiming to keep videos close to 10 minutes to cater to RUclips's promotion algorithms and that you're trying to avoid boring viewers into abandoning the video, but "then draw the rest" every twenty to forty seconds is the least helpful instruction technique for even advanced artists. You can do better than that and you should. You in fact openly demonstrate that you can do better when you explain properly how you color the water.
Great point, I actually just didn’t want to bore people to death because the actual drawing takes many hours. I’m still learning and if I make more, will definitely consider this. Thanks
