- In a previous video we had a look at a customer's 2018 Hemi powered Dodge Ram and made a determination that either the mouse ate the harness under the intake manifold or there was a bad MDDS solenoid. The only way to find out for sure is to pull the intake manifold off. In this video we slip off the manifold and see what the actual problem is. Ohhh and we fix it too.
-Enjoy!

No special effects, just real mechanic at work with full narration and humour. Love this channel.
*Not real good at pulling out here*
*No wonder this guy ended up with so many kids*
🤣😂🤣☠
"Come on pull out. No wonder this guy has so many kids"...that line was absolutely hilarious.
Can't believe I've been following this channel for has to be like 5 years, and its still as interest as when I first started watching
100% it’s common to like a channel but lose interest but S.M.A never disappoints. His integrity and work ethic is top notch.
I agree. Eric O. Doesn't ever seem to not amaze.
10 years now, same opinion.
Eric never fails to impress and entertain.
I still remember the first video i watched. It was a shorted ignition coil on a jeep
Honestly, this cinematography is awesome. With long uncut shots, I can zoom and pan around to easily see up close when I want.
Cinematography ... LOL and hell yeah!
The best , he cares about what he puts out .
Wait, what, I can zoom! OMG, I can get closer to the maestro mechanic!
Had no idea you could zoom !
Thanks
"be a mechanic.... it'll be fun", "stupid cars!". You're great Eric, thx for another enjoyable video. Keep your chin up, you're making a positive difference in a confused world.
He got my on the crack. Thought he broke the plastic lower manifold, not the solenoid.
Think that is what I like best, he has the same problem I do when things refuse to come out. I'm sipping my coffee, use the torch!!! 😆
"Oh be a mechanic, it'll be fun!" I laughed so hard, thanks!! And yeah, been there!!!! Great work!
Got a real good chuckle on that one.
Me too! I liked the goofy voice that came with it! Haha!
I've said this many times😂
Mechanics are good. Automotive engineers hate mechanics.
@@Ghauster Mechanics HATE engineers. On some things. Lol
Do not apologize for helping others out. You are the Boss, and what you do, and say, goes. Another good fix.
Annnnnnd, part II… TOTALLY worth it! I would have lost my shit when the solenoid broke, camera or not. My wife has been in the garage when tools start flying, and she knows that’s the time to leave.
Technicians who still do that after the first month haven't been told to be smarter than the car and the tools.
They don't last in shops.
At home, of course, throw all the tools you like.
@@dannylinc6247 If Technicians need to be smarter than the cars, Why do they insist on asking the car "what is wrong"? LOL JK... I'm old-school, I love it when the only "computer" is built from Grey matter.
A few yrs ago, I took a 1976 Monti Carlo I used to own to a shop I trust, (friends with the owner) for a tune-up.(Didn't feel like fighting with no.8 plug (A/C car)). If you know, You know.. The Owner sent a "new hire" over to do the job. I planned to wait. As the kid walked over, The owner to him not to forget to check for code's. When the kid turned back to get the scanner, I LMAO and told my friend that I'm getting a ride home, I couldn't stand to see how long my friend would wait while this kid tried to find the OBD port. Went back the next day to get my car and was told that the kid was fired later that day after breaking a OBD 1 port trying to force a OBD 2 connector into it. (Yes, This sadly is a true story...)
Once had a short in the harness that fried all 4 solenoids. 1 came out cleanly. The other 3? Added to my list of repressed memories until today. Thanks Eric!
The "Mister O Show"! Great comedy and good common sense mechanic work. Who could ask for more. Your dedication to doing good work and keeping your customers in the loop are the things that separate you from the riff raff shops. When SMA does your job, you know you have received quality care!! Keep it up, we love watching!!!
12:14 Perfect pronunciation with a slight northern German accent, and a great choice of the perfect tool for the job. Thanks for another great video.
I like that upper crawler. Never seen one before. Already bought the new back so I guess I can't justify it now.
I own a 16 Hemi Ram. As a engineer in the iron mines of Minnesota. Oil CLEANLIENESS is the name of the game! And on these MFD,ABC,AFM,UCB, What ever engines? Stop thinking your oil can go 12k miles. The oil can, yet the filter is full of dirt. I change oil at 50% on the dash oil life meter. I have no Hemi TIC!
From the clues in this video, I suspect this vehicle owner neglects performing properly scheduled oil changes.
True that. I change mine every 5k have on 06 jeep with mds and nearly 300k on the clock, no tick. Had to pull the heads to do the exhaust manifold gaskets and everything was clean as could be. I wish there had been another way but it's tight, that hemi is shoehorned in there.
The only way to know is to send of a sample of used oil to a laboratory.
Exactly, even on bottles of oil say it can go for 24Kilomoters (In Canada) There's no way Oil can last that long and it's all marketing garbage. I used to do the hole Once a year oil change but I've since increased the amount of driving I do having to go back home to see my family 3 hours away when ever I get time off. Now I do 5K all the time. Oil Life stuff is super misleading.
@@Boodieman72or just change it and not worry about it lol
Eric O just knows how to make good videos. There was no apparent reason to start the video realizing he forgot a wire connection as he tried to remove the intake for the "money shot", but it was actually an excellent editing decision, because it was great beginning (bringing everyone up to steam) and introduced a small amount of drama, setting up the actual money shot.
OTOH, how many times has a simple project turn into a major all day ordeal when you break something that needed to come out in one piece.
Well, Eric, I can hear it from here and I’m 2000 miles away but it’s quieter here in my years aren’t listening to the street that’s running by or the Lawn Mower next-door so you’re doing a good job. Keep up the good work.
Those solenoids break off here in the central valley of California where we don't have to deal as much with rust and salt. Like you said, it's common for those to break...I think no matter where you're at.
My wife just asked me why I work on cars all day and then come home to watch "that guy" do it..
I replied *"someday I'm going to bring him an ice cream cone"*
By the look on her face.. we're on the couch tonight, boys.
Might not be the first
Or the last.
Flowers would work wonders
@@dddevildogg I went and got her an ice cream sundae..
@@COBRO98 I know my couch is bad on my back, ruins the next day...my wife never used that as punishment for "whatever"
I’m very impressed and learned much with the broken solenoid extraction! You have every right to brag. That was artistry Mr. O. Thanks for the great videos
Your camera is incredible at picking up sounds. While you were putting your ear to the intake manifold to hear the solenoids activate we heard them perfectly clear.
I have been watching from the beginning and nothing has changed the integrity and work ethic is the same as from the beginning . Well I guess Mrs O has gotten more beautiful and the kids have grown that’s the change I see. S.M.A is a true professional. Bravo sir.
Nice to know experts run into the same crap as us weekend warriors. You always make the repair look easy.
Love the fact this man doesn't use gloves. Love it
Mr. O, another great video. I work in a CDJR dealer and we see tons of these harnesses nice and cooked underneath the hemi intake manifolds. Can't tell you how many times we have pulled an intake for another repair and afterwards we have MDS circuit codes, just becausewe disturbed it. Definitely a good call on replacing that harness "while you're in there" 😂. Keep up the good work sir
E
I learn something new every time I watch a South Main Auto video!
As someone living near their factory I can confirm the correctness of your pronounciation to an amazingly high degree.
👏
Another great video and repair as always . It brightens my day when you have posted a new feast for us to watch. Camera work was exceptional as always. I thank you for all that you do to bring us along. Cheers
Don't ever feel like you have to apologize for anything. Your worst video is better than most best video's.
Anyone else love these videos so much you pause it just to make it last longer? 😂
14:06 I commend you for not dropping an f bomb when that solenoid broke
Yeah but that f'n alternator kept biting him. 😂😂
Mother of Pearl
Experienced Editing.
People forget that these videos may be 3 hours long (lunch, customer calls, questions)
I can't believe I'm 13+ minutes into this video and Lawn Mower Guy isn't operating.
I know! What’s up with that guy and his damn lawnmower 😂
I think maybe something happened to him. An internet mystery is born!
Very very good job!
Could hear them at the end loud and clear!
Thank you for this video, hope the hemi is hemi-ing now.
Eric, I would really rather watch you do it, your so much better at this than I could ever be.
Verizon had a commercial and the catch phrase was "can you hear me now?" During that time 2002 to 2011, I was at a Circle K and the woman in front of me was on a cell phone and asked "can you hear me now", I replied "GOOD". Good was the 2nd part of the phrase.
Only thing lacking was the test drive. You usually test and prove the fix worked. I wonder how easy it would be for the guy at home to get that intake plenum off.
When things go wrong it is getting real interesting for us Eric. Eric O's misery is our learning opportunity. I would have loved to see you grinding that rusty edge down. 😀
Welp, that's another tool I need to buy. A mini slide hammer for removing seals (and apparently solenoids that break off, too).
I love your channel. I've been following you for quite some time. I love what you're doing. Appreciate your good work and your advice. And everything you do to help others keep up the good work my friend.
I felt like I was standing by your shoulder crowding you in😅😅😅
No clue when I started watching, I do remember Eric having color in his hair though. Videos have always been entertaining, and educational. Even if I have moved from civilian side to being a mechanic in the army. I do know this channel inspired me to be a mechanic.
"Very easy to take the intake manifold off" 😂😂
Looks to me like a beast to work on.
It's not just "boys" that watch and learn from your videos we girls watch and learn too.
Sorry.... Boys and GIRLS 😁
Another great, informative video! Thanks Eric! 😎
Informative 🤔 I heard every solenoid when you energized them. Thanks for the video.
most honest mechanic i have ever seen
Next video Eric begins with a look of shock and confusion on his face: "Hey there viewers welcome back to the South Main Auto Channel, sponsored by Dollar General and Scott paper towels."
You know it would have been less painful is you had used novocain, and had the patient rinse between your vacuuming (suctions), that usually makes removing broken teeth easy. I was glad you packed gauze in to the tooth socket (standard procedure), wouldn't want dirt to cause an infection.
I did all mine plus the wiring harness brake the top off like you did even though I lightly tapped the top witha hammer soaking area in kroil, then removed center drilled in a deck screw i the center used a piece of 2/4” and a clae hammer pulls right up, regrdless did not solve the problem, bad ecm output
Might want to think about gifting the lawn mowing neighbor a new pair of binoculars. Apparently his broke. Thanks for taking us along, Mr. O.
I wished you wouldn’t have had your big fat elbow in the way when you pulled the other part of solenoid out 🤣🤣🤣
The brown Down Town time had me rolling Thank you 😅
Preliminary sarcastic strikes on the comment trolls....Approved🏆🏆🏆
Emory cloth on the rust ridge? Horse spit! Off camera the wizzy flapper is over there cleaning his teeth from eating all that rust. 😊
Eric, I think thanks to those mice all of your kids are going to get a great college education. Thanks for Sharing! 🙃🙂
How did a mouse get in there is my question beautiful video as always
Next time wack the old solenoid with a rubber mallet, it will usually push it down enough to break the o ring free from the bore and they usually come right out.
It's not just "boys" that watch and learn from your videos. Us girls watch too.
It's pronounced "pl-EYE-ers". I hope this helps.
Great as always
This is kinda like being at the dentist office. A little bit of humming and then the drilling starts.😮
I hope you keep pix or videos of this crud you find..for those 'customers' that give you a 'hairy eyeball' when you resent them with the bill...
Awesome video as usual Eric! Any possible way you can throw out the item number for that tool you extracted the broken solenoid with? I can see how that tool would come in handy MANY different ways!
Think of all the cool places the mice got to visit while tooling around in the Hemi. And then it all went bad for them with the visit to South Main Auto.
Have yet to see you make a bad video! Thanks for making them.... and please keep them coming.
9:55 Is that in reference to the 'Avoca Smoker'?
Where oh where did you get your mini slide hammer from? Good video follow-up for all the people with the trust issues.
Not the exact one but very similar amzn.to/3SV8pGu
@@SouthMainAuto $149. I'll pass.
Way to Go !!! Congrats! on success ! I've had them moments after working 25 years in the bench ! I quit 20 years ago and went farming ! same vision of success ! Retired now
Damn, it keeps lighting me up, darn Alternator, maybe I should have disconnected the battery. You crack me up Eric.
I always leave an intake port open so I have a place to stow the extra nuts and bolts.
Always love a good hearing test on RUclips by the way Mr O great video 👍
Eric, in the early days of the 5.7l hemi, I was hired by a Chrysler / Jeep dealer to do that recall on the valve seats. I had so many heads off, I quit after 2 yrs. Mainly because I had to buy my own special tools from Chrysler as the other techs would steal them every time we got a new set. lol
If the first solenoid broke off when removing, I certainly wouldn’t change the ones that were working!
Brilliant Mr. O. Thank you
Thanks for the video Eric.
LOL. you are so For REAL! can't tell how many times i said the same damn things when things didnt go smoothly. work is so much like WORK.
OHM Meters can be more effective when you set them to the most sensitive and you use an old fashioned dial meter not a digital
Sometimes I wonder if in a situation like that you could put hot glue down in there with maybe a j hook so that you could the hot glue sets up and you can pull it out with that.
I gotta say I am glad I got out when I did. Now just reminisce and watch videos.
%$#@ rodentia! I keep four Victor mousetraps loaded with glued on peanuts as bait all the time in my garage to keep them from chewing my car up when I park it in there in the winter time.
Me too
I hired the services of 3 cats. No mice here!
love those "money shots"
My Ram is a 1996 mechanical injection Cummins, no Hemis for me. No timing belt, no DEF, no high pressure injectors and pump.
It's no surprise US vehicles have such poor mpg - that intake alone is about the weight and size of a typical small Euro city car. Yeh, I know, "you don't understand what it's like here" - I have to commute alone in my giant truck over 10 miles each way every day on well maintained pavement, it's brutal man and besides there could be a zombie apocalypse and a freak weather event! That's 95% of giant truck owners. The other 5% actually use them. I guess it's just the competitive nature of US society. Why are they so ungodly competitive? It's not healthy.
Enjoy your vids immensely Eric. But you had a bit of a faux pas in this one. You referred to Canada as "northern US". We Canadians will accept "western UK", "eastern Japan" or "northern Russia", but that's it. Just sayin'
I know its problem: It's a Dodge. In all seriousness, you should have bought the 2,000 dollar special MOPAR tool made by Snap-On. Who needs to eat or pay bills, when you can buy tools.
Your camera was picking up the solenoids very well. The squealing was so loud I thought there was something wrong with them.
You can say what you like about plastic engine parts but when you have to drag a V8 manifold out of a truck your back is quite pleased when it's plastic......
If my sources are accurate, GM cylinder deactivation is problematic as well. Most of the recommendations I have read or heard say "disconnect that crap".
Being that the buttons are unattainable from the manufacturer...why no trip to Wilbert's?...whats your criteria for getting quality used parts instead of new?
mds solenoid: After the top breaks off... pull plunger out with a magnet. tap the plastic hole with 10mm x 1.5. Thread a bolt in.
Dude, at 1:13, dead center of image (where your left hand was to lift out the intake) looks like the top of someone’s head from nose up!
I can’t believe you don’t wear gloves pulling mouse nest/poop out. 😂
I liked that you didn’t want to replace all the solenoids. Good man and mechanic!
I'm guessing mouse is nothing compared to the cows on farm trucks.
@@robertsmith2956 Good point! 😂
When stuffing holes from debris I like to use your "good ol fashioned" plastic grocery store bags. They plug the hole perfectly and never rip while trying to remove them, nor soak up fluids. And reusable. I keep em in a bag that I call the "bag of bags" 🤣🤣
Love the channel, real life as a mechanic, dealing with plastic crap. Raise your hand if you ever wanted to hunt down the engineers who design this junk for some unpleasant communications. I’m one, ✋✋✋.
Pulling, twisting, prying, drilling, all accompanied with intermittent suction - if the mechanic career doesn't work out, Mr. O might consider going into dentistry.
Ha, was watching learn to play Pretty Woman guitar vid at 3/4 speed, started watching this for a but and wondering if my connection was fubared...nope, user error
Are you still benefitting from the Covid-can't-smell-mice side effect? 🐭
Yes sir. It has to be wicked nasty mouse for me to smell it.
No wonder this guy has so many kids. bwahahahaha Mr. Wiggles strikes again
I'm curious how long it the procedure to remove intake, replace solenoidactually takes. 3hrs? 8 hrs?
We've answered the age old question with this episode: Does Mr.O scrunch or fold?
Empty a can of contact cleaner on the switches.
Not sure what you used to record but I love my smallrig camera mount. $22 on the Amazon. Clamps on so many different things
Your famous quote " Remember, if I could do it, so can you " for sure does not apply here, the moment i would have seen that solenoid brake apart like that, i would have started coursing the world and given up.
Not to put too fine a point on it, but it's
New klee are, not
New cue lar.
You're giving me hot flashbacks of George Dubya....
Great video as always. Any chance a soak in PB blaster would help in removing stuck solenoid
