    If the starter doesn't crank when you turn the ignition key, the possible causes are:
    the ignition switch
    the start relay (if present)
    the continuity of the electrical circuit
    the starter itself
    One of the method in car troubleshooting is to proceed by elimination. This video shows how to test the ignition switch in order to eliminate this cause of failure.

    Spent 138 bucks on a new battery last night after work, (Needed replaced anyway). I was able to start the no crank jeep and drive after that. Wake up this morning and it wouldn't start again. Tried your trick of turning the key for a few seconds. Lit up like normal. Need a new starter. Thanks!!

    My son has a 2000 Mercedes S500 V-8.
    A so called mechanic told him it would cost $2000 to fix it.
    He said that there is no power to the ignition switch.Can't he trace the power source? It could be just a fuse or a relay or, even a bad ignition switch!?
    I wish I knew 1/2 as much as you do.
    Awesome video. Thanks a lot.

      if car starts and then dies, ignition switch is bad. check the fuse, relay, neutral safety switch first and also battery connections [very important, sometimes loose and corroded]

    Why does my starter run off the car but not on the car? 2006 Impala LT 3.9 automatic.
    New battery and cables. When I turn the key to the run position, nothing happens(no noise or clicking).
    There is power from the ignition switch to the starter. No shorts and no damaged wires and all connectors are clean and tight.

      Neil Williams i have the same problem

    • @neilwilliams8608
      @neilwilliams8608 7 лет назад +1

      I fixed my problem. The starter was so old and worn that, it runs off of the car but, not on the car.
      The starter was so bad that, it did not have enough power to turn the fly wheel but, enough power to run w/o a heavy load.
      Also, make sure everything is clean before you put the starter back because, if you don't, you will not have a good ground which, will cause loss of power from the starter.
      I hope this helps.

      Neil Williams mine is weird I take the starter out then put it back in and it turns on it'll run a few days then it won't turn on at all again. It's tricky because of that. I took the starter to a few shops they say it's good so I'm not sure.

    • @neilwilliams8608
      @neilwilliams8608 7 лет назад

      I had mine tested at 2 different auto parts stores and they told me mine was good to. A mechanic at a dealer told me that, a starter will show good voltage or power but, when the starter is under torque(trying to turn the flywheel), it loses it's power because, the starter is so old and worn, it will not hold under pressure.
      When tested, the starter showed the correct voltage but, as soon as I put it under torque, it wouldn't turn the flywheel. The starter will hold voltage(power) but, cannot give the correct voltage(power) to turn the flywheel.
      I hope this explains it a little better.
      Hope this helps. (neil201551@yahoo.com) Let me know what happened.

    Very good refresher on the ignition switch components and electronics, but if the problem lies within the mechanical tumbler for instance, a bent or weakened shaft will have you scratching your head? Huh what?

  • @cfchrischris

    On some of these fords mid 90s if thjs happens , it could be caused by car alarm. If battery gets low, or if you change battery it thinks its being stolen.
    Look under dash very close to hood release.
    Youll find a valet switch.
    Put key in on position and hold button down fir 3 to 5 seconds and itll clear alarm and start up .

  • @MrBigg1995

    That is not necessarily a bad starter. You would still want to apply 12 volts directly to the starter and see how it responds. As for the ignition switch being bad or not you can use a jumper wire between the starter wire at the switch with the red battery wire at the switch and see if the start delay goes away.

    Ok. Hoping you can help. I have a 2002 Saturn S series. I dropped the cover plates and saw a connector with three wires; a red, a brown and a yellow. The ignition switch connector itself has like 28 wires spewing out of it, so I left those alone. The yellow wire makes the horn honk in any key position. The red wire does not make the light go on in any key position. The brown wire lights up only in accessories position. On crank, the two wires do no light up. Wondering if I even have the right connector? If the red wire didn't light up, that should point towards the ignition switch. I replaced it and same symptoms. Only noise I hear is the Power Window Relay making a single clicking noise. There is no starter relay that I can find. Anyways.. I now think it's the starter but I haven't ran a test light to it yet. Have to jack up the car just to get to the stupid thing.

      Take it to a mechanic and get him to change out the ignition switch/lock. He will provide you with new car keys when done, so make certain that you save the old key especially if you need it to unlock your car doors. I mentioned this to someone up above who experienced this same issue. I had it happen on my 1998 Nissan Altima years back. I did everything in the book to try to unlock the wheel. Just a bad ignition switch/lock. Good luck on getting the right mechanic to fix it. I had to tow it to mine due to such an issue as well. Hope this info helps.

      If it's no power to the dashboard cluster but you have a good battery and alternator it's most likely the ignition switch. Remove the plastic cover underneath the key ignition. Turn the key to the on position and then smack that little black box with a screwdriver or tool. If your dashboard cluster lights up and gets power you have a faulty ignition switch.

      Bad ignition switch/lock assembly needs replacing. I had two old vehicles of differing models have such a issue. Key wouldn't turn at all, steering wheel was also locked on one no matter what I tried to do to release it (Tried all the wheel unlock tricks in the book). The new ignition switch/lock will come with a new key of course and replace your old key. So make certain not to throw the old one away if you need it to open up your car doors with it. I hope this helps. I didn't do the repair myself. I had to take it to my local mechanic who specializes in electrical automotive repair. I just don't trust any other mechanics with such issues.

    • @virtual_intel
      @virtual_intel 6 лет назад

      If you don't have such a mechanic in your area, you're best bet is to take it to the dealership. As this sort of repair could be very difficult depending on the type of year/model vehicle you own. It will be pricey if so, but at least you'll get the job done right!

    Thank you for the informative video. Can anyone please help. My battery voltage is 12.67v and when i start the engine the voltage does not seem to change. When I checked the voltage from the leads without being connected to the battery it was over 18v. Is this a bad Rectifier/ Regulaor on the alternator. Could a fuse be blown. So battery does not seem to charge. I cannot start the engine using the ignition key. I have a 25hp mariner efi cdi elpt. The tilt switch is also totally non responsive. I have come accross people with a similar problem who changed a fuse and problem solved. But where do I find the fuse. I can start the engine no problem with the pull cord on the flywheel and engine runs without a hitch.

      Rectifier/ Regulator is in the starter or outside? if inside, replace starter, if outside, only Rectifier/ Regulator will be needed to replace

      if it has spark and gas then timing belt is out or compression is low. the other possibility is that injectors are bad. you did not mention about the codes.

      Wow sounds like a really bad issue. Did you get it fixed? did you take it to a mechanic to get the issue sorted out? and what was the outcome if so. My vehicle is slowly but surely having similar issues, but it took a while for it to get how it is now. So I'm assuming yours took a long time as well, showing minor indications of such issues then after a while it got like this. I'm wondering if it could be a engine malfunction, since you changed out much of the things that generally could cause your problem. If it was something like a relay, or ignition switch I don't think it would take mine this long to get as bad as it is now. As my past ignition switch problems were a one time event, and the key wouldn't turn at all.

      My problem might be a faulty engine even though it drives really great once I manage to get it to crank over. As I watched another video on a possible starter issue and the guy who made such a video pointed out my exact trouble. Mine clicks once after trying to turn the key to get the ignition started, then I get nothing. No crank, just a single click noise. I need to push the brakes and do it like 3 or 4 times turning the key to get the ignition to start. Sometimes after the car has been running for a while. I don't need to do anything but turn the key. My issue could also be a bad starter, but according to that guy he pointed out the engine to be at fault in my situation. I hope not though. If I had the money to get it fixed I would take it to my expert mechanic, as he specializes in electrical issues on vehicles. I'm sure he would nail the issue down almost immediately especially after a little trouble shooting.

      if car starts and then dies, first possibility is bad ignition switch if there ARE no codes
