Here’s a great trick I used. My starter relay failed I found it and switched it for the a/c relay until I could get to the part store for a new one. But I keep the bad one. After I got home I knocked the top off and put it back in and pressed it with my fingers to use it as an under hood starter switch. It works great for when you need to turn the engine over without starting it up. Just leave the key off and it will not start up but you can run the starter motor as long as you need to. Or turn the key on and start the engine up from the fender

Well it's only been about an hour but I did switch out both DEFO/TO TOP RELAY along with with both 40a fuses. But still not cranking. And still making muffled click. So I did switch out in cabin fuse box relay with deff one. But still getting muffled click from cabin.Sounds it can be that -Black- one just below. Any ideas? 9:34am 5/24/2022 appreciate it.

On my G6 ... I have no ignition power to start relay. Gnd and hot wire to relay are good... And I think I located correct fuse...also OK. But NO ignition power... I will check start position and power at the ignition next

I have 04 Hyundai Santa fe! Ran good now after I start a few times the lights bright and battery strong! Won't do anything but after it sits 4 PLUS hours it starts fine starts 4 times then dead but let sit SEVERAL hours it starts fine again any idea's

Make sure the battery posts are clean and the cables tight. Check for same on chassis and engine grounds. This sounds like a poor wiring connection somewhere,
Yes i double check and make sure its clean and tight. Also i make i secondary connection of the negative side to the chassis and also engine but but still intermittent start. I forgot to tell you that the car has a push button start i am suspecting that is the problem.
just a question for ye ... I have a freelander 2003 that I have lost the keys of so have no master key , I have had a lock smith at it for about 2 weeks now on and off with still no result , is there a way to by pass the immobiliser using this same method

That sound you hear when the key in is the start position is likely the solenoid plunger moving. That means the start signal is getting to the starter. Make sure you have B+ 12V at the starter and if you do, the starter is likely bad.

I rigged mine until i can afford the fix lol. I wrapped and old speaker wire to the relay fuse and touch the battery then crank and it starts no problem. My problem now is intermittent starting but the starter is fine on my 2012 Ford focus. 48,000 miles on the damn Thing smh and I'm not even a mechanic
Must be a loose wire or connection somewhere between the ignition and the relay. Can be tough to find as I discovered on my first car. Good luck and way to improvise!
My son has a 2000 Mercedes S500 V-8.
A so called mechanic told him it would cost $2000 to fix it.
He said that there is no power to the ignition switch.Can't he trace the power source? It could be just a fuse or a relay or, even a bad ignition switch!?

You're welcome. There has to be an always 12V at the ignition switch, waiting for the key to turn to the start position. If that is there, it could be a bad ignition switch or wiring or the starter relay down the line. You need to use a volt meter (or 12V test light) to trace out this kind of problem. The trouble with cars is that wiring and parts can be hard to get at.I would start with the relay because it usually easy to get at. And yeah, I would check the fuses in the circuit. Good luck

Hey I have a 2003 dodge grand caravan and my van will start and then will stall about three minutes after its on. Then I will try to start it again but it does nothing. All the dash lights work and headlights, ect but fuses are fine and I just replaced the alternator about five months ago. There is also no noise when I try to start it. I'm thinking maybe its the mass air flow sensor but there isn't any white smoke coming out if my exhaust or maybe my starter? Possibly the ignition switch?? Please help I have no idea on how to troubleshoot this!
Sounds like two different problems which makes me think its power related. Possibly a poor connection or bad wire. These can be very difficult to find. I would use a schematic and a meter and focus on the power circuits.
I have a 17foot box truck 2005 or 06 v10 f450 motor old uhaul truck. New battery, new starter, new starter solenoid everything lights up and radio works but when you turn the key to start it nothing happens no clicks. no noise to the motor.. nothing.. I was told to try this trick to see if it starts but I don't know what gauge wire to use.. someone also said I can rap the gauge wire around one of the pins and reconnect the starter relay and use the other end and tap the battery to see if it will start also but I don't know that trick either or the gauge for the wire... any help and information will be great .. thank you for your time
16 gauge would be good enough. I like starting at the relay because that will point you either toward the starter or toward the ignition.

First thing I would try would be to reset the security system by disconnecting the battery for at least 30 seconds.
I have a question..you said about your Chrysler.. so what was the problem? I tried the relay terminals and starter cranks it also cranks when u touch it with a screwdriver on the starter. But I go to the ignition and just a click its wierd I bought a new starter and it messed up too . Can it be my starter?

What happens when the starter will run off the car but, not on the car? The starter relay is good and working as well as the safety neutral switch and the ignition switch and new battery. Also, the engine is not locked up.Also, the battery cables are new. When I tun the key to run nothing happens ( no noise or clicking) but everything else works There is power from the ignition switch to the starter. All fuses are good and working properly.

Have you physically measured 12V at the large lug (B+) at the starter, including when you turn the key to start? If it's always present there, I am out of ideas. It absolutely should run.

Hello I have a 2000 mercury grand marquis n just got it back from the tow place they lost my chipped key.they changed the ignition and don't think they got it programmed right i was told by ford. The only thing that happens is my lights turn on in the dash board no crank or start.If it is the anti theft crap is there any way I could bypass it without spending more money?Would it start at the starter relay purhapse?Thanx in advance any advice would be helpful.. This is a troubleshooting guide, I wasn't solving a specific problem. Much can be learned by starting at the relay. You can eliminate components to find the culprit.
I did this to an infinity and it didn't work out so good the car went from clicking when I was turning the key to not clicking no more after I arched a relay and it wouldn't turn I either messed up the whole fuse panel or I don't f****** know or the ignition or linkable fuse possibly on a harness check the starter by tearing off the manifold has power as I can cross it with a screwdriver I'm stunned and lost at the same time
You may have taken a hot to ground. I would check the fuses first.
89 Accord manual trans. Bad translock switch. Jumper wire worked for four or five times, and now it goes blank wen starting. Is there a relay that is shorting behind the fuse box. I see three there
My car started with the relay insertion test so what is my issue its 2007 ford escape. Was starting find until I took battery out to install the water pump
Usually when that happens to me I retrace my steps on the repair. You likely dislodged a connector of something in the start circuit between the ignition switch and the starter relay.
03 navigator no crank starter is good there's no power to the ignition wire on the starter the fuel pump comes on but there a loud noice coming from the fuse box like if the starter relay was over working with the ignition on
The starter relay is good place to troubleshoot. It needs two things to function: a control signal which energizes it and 12V high- current power to feed the starter. If one of those is missing, you will have no crank. Both those circuits have fuses to check.
hope you have an idea I have a 2004 dodge ram when starter is in the truck it wont start if I remove it and ground to frame it engages with key turn install back in truck no start. the small wire to starter from relay read 12 volts with key turn if the wire is not connected to starter but if I connect it to starter it reads .5 volts when key turned but when out of vehicle reads 12 volts and starter engages with key turn

@@TheOriginalMechanic I did replace all the cables 3 month's ago double checked clean and tight there seems to be a short somewhere I removed fuses from fuse box and I get 12.5 volts in on one side and 5 to 7 volts on the side where there should be nothing without fuses installed I believe

All you can do is backtrack and check everything you touched for loose connectors etc. Been there many times.

My fuse on my camaro 1989 will not get power on the fuse box. Some of the fuses are fuel injector 1/2. Crk 3. I’ve replaced with new fuses no help. Do you know why some fuses are working and some aren’t
You'll have to backtrack to find whatever feeds those fuses. A wiring diagram is likely to be needed.
what if I have all this but my code reader is reading PCM NOT EQUIPPED?

Hey mate thx a great deal, i have a question bout 91 volvo 245....there is i systemrelais that activates fuelpumps and spark...a guy gave me following tip: jump the + side of coil to + of battery....yes indeed, only then, i had spark...now comes the strange part...once the car runs i dont need the jumpwire anymore, but restarting does Not go without the jumpwire...i dont understand ...
The relay must only be needed at start up. You need a wiring diagram to find out what activates that relay. I assume you checked the fuse. Some cars have a fuel pump cut-out device that will block the pump until conditions are met.
My lexus acts as if the battery is low and makes a sound when i turn on ignition . I think the relay? It charges or clicks then the car will turn over slowly but starts . Battery test says battery is good and charging system is low so i cleaned connections and now the relay clicks a few times and still starts slow like its gonna die but doesnt do the starter clicking as if battery low . Odd i just played with the relays and the fuse box and now it kinda works , relay doesnt charge click now but still slow turnover to start. Could the battery be bad or would it be a draw or short discharging the battery.
Before you buy a battery, check and tighten all the big cable connections you can find on the car, from the battery to the alternator and starter and also chassis grounds. Anything less than perfect connections can cause what you are seeing.

No you don't have to disconnect the battery to do that job.

When this kind of thing happens I always backtrack everything I did on the repair. Look for wiring connectors that may have been unplugged, dislodged or damaged during the repair.

If you don't have power on the starter relay contact that's it right there. When the relay coil is energized the contact will the close and the starter will crank. Assuming the fuse is good this has to be a poor connection or broken wire between the fuse and starter relay.

This morning I took my greenish fusible link off my starter wire to inspect it for any burnt or corrosion seemed good soon as I plugged everything back in car started took it for a test drive everything is was good soon as i got home shut the car off car didn't want to crank can a fusible link cause a no crank start or a bad starter wired I even stuck my light stick to test to see if it bad power in the starter wire it didn't light up

Which logo indicate the starter motor fuse and relay
That's going to vary by vehicle. Usually there is a diagram inside the fuse box cover or in the owner's manual. Or you might find it on You Tube or a online forum for your vehicle.

It appears you are trying to start the car by jumping the starter relay without a key in the ignition. There needs to be a key in the ignition and in the on position.
One question, what happens when you are testing the starter by jumping the relay and instead of getting a crank sound you get a small amount of smoke?

A smell like that makes me think of wiring or motor windings. Make sure all the wiring connections are tight.
Is that a "jumper wire" you have connected to your multimeter, battery and the relay fuse slot?
Yes it is. If the starter turns, this will verify that the power fuse, wiring, solenoid and starter are good.

After like ten minutes I’ll try it again then it cranks. I’m confused on what it is. I know one guy got under the hood and bumped it with a wire and it cranks instantly. @@righteousmasculine That sounds like a poor connection to me. Most likely in the control circuit somewhere. To troubleshoot you need a meter or test light in there to find where the 12V is lost.

I have a 2008 dodge charger 2.7 and i only have power on the 87 of my starter relay terminal. Should atleast have power on the 30 terminal as well but nothing. Do you know what it could be?
97 dodge Dakota no crank. Relays click and fuel pump primes. All light come on as they should. Turn the key and nothing happens only the relays click. I replaced them anyways, replaced the starter pulled the starter harness up and checked for rub throughs and bare spots found none. New battery new ignition switch and still nothing. Can jump it from the solenoid and it will crank and run without a hitch. Was fine one night next morning Im dealing with this scenario.
Seems like a open wire between the relay and the solenoid. I would try subbing in a jumper. The hard part is accessing the wire.

Between the starter relay and the solenoid. If the relay is operating and has power on one side of the contact, then the problem is between the other side of the relay contact and the solenoid.
The Original Mechanic figured it out. Went checking connections again, but I didn’t bother with the transmission the 1st time. My neutral safety switch got unplugged somehow. Thank you for the tips

Well i got a gt sti right. It started haveing letrical issues. Like after 30 mins of driveing it would start stalling. Befor that tho once every 3months wouldnt start untill unpluged the batery ground it then reconect it. Once it wouldnt start untill i hit the ac button lol. That was only once. Battery went dead. Jumped it fine. Put it in garage. Now has power but no crank. Wont even wind over. Allmost like the emobalizer is on. And head lights wont come on or dash lights. But windo wipers will and radio.....help!!!!! Please

There are still several possibilities; From the ignition switch to the relay coil and the wiring in between. Try subbing in another relay to eliminate that.
IV tried switching relays and did not work. I replaced ignition starter switch and still not cranking.

working on a 88 Nissan Maxima it won't crank but when you try to start it it sound like it trying to crank but won't replace fuel pump don't know what else to do checked all the fuses still won't stay running
If it's cranking then it's on to fuel and spark. I'd check to see if fuel is getting all the way to the cylinder. Good luck, these can be toughies.

My c230 kompressor 2002: key turns and car powers on but the engine won't crank. After a couple seconds the fan ramps up to 100% and that is it. I've replaced the electric portion of the key fob. Any help is greatly welcomed.
Find the relay box and locate the starter relay. This is the best place to begin troubleshooting.

Very strange. Something temperature related like that makes me think of an electronic control board....like an anti-theft system. Just guessing a bit. This will require some electrical troubleshooting while it's acting up. good luck!

This is a tough crank, no start problem. You have replaced the likely suspects. You are probably going to need a wiring diagram and a meter to pin this down.

@The Original Mechanic. (No Crank) What to do if you have no continuous power at the Starter relay? I tried this starting method (remove relay) on my 07 Accord, started 3 times but not with jump wire, only jump wire + key. Then.. Nothing, now no more continuous power, yet I have signal wire power when I turn the key.
While probing around with the jump wire I may have touched hot to ground, could this somehow have burnt out PCM to Starter Relay (continuous power)? With key on, I can put 12v to starter and car starts and runs normal. Not sure how to trouble shoot this? Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Be blessed!
On your Accord the "continuous" 12V must only come on when ignition switch is on. If you blew the fuse for the starter 12V you couldn't jump it on. Hmm, I'm confused too. So this is intermittent loss of 12V. Poor ground? Make sure your big engine grounds are not loose or corroded, including battery terminals. Or a poor connection or wire to or from the fuse box for the 12V? Good luck, that's a toughie.
Your video just came up in my youtube feed. I am troubleshooting a parasitic short.on the.battery.. I am an old TV tech. I worked from.80 through 2007. Where are your schematics from. I have the Chilton, Haynes and several others. They are generated not the exact. It's almost impossible for a non professional to obtain the schematic for the VIN of my 1999 Ford Expy Eddie Bower 4.6 car. Find generic stuff ..fairly worthless. I subscribed.
I used a Haynes manual for this video. Yeah those kind of shorts take time and a good wiring diagram to fix. I had a VCR repair shop in the nineties and know the value of a schematic. I occasionally find a diagram on an online vehicle forum. Good luck and thanks for subscribing.
@@TheOriginalMechanic Used to fix VCRs. I went out to house on a service call on a cheap vice. Somebody had ordered an RF
modulator. I put it in.. Always nice to work on your knees and hope the rug doesn't get burned. It was still snowy. I called the manager and told him that we should just replace it. He agreed. Sometimes you just cut your losses and come out ahead.
It was just a 50 mile trip..gas is free.

Check the fuses in the start circuit, both power and control. The starter relay is an easy part to swap out. Maybe the the always 12V is missing. Someone needs to get in there with a meter and follow the 12V start control signal. Where is it? Where is it lost? Good luck and thanks for watching!

My car, 2005 Scion xb, 285k miles, now, sporadically, will not start, no click of starter, nothing at all, no sound. Seems to happen more often after driving long distance, like over 20 minutes. Car will start fine, a couple times, like when I head out, go somewhere, will start ok when I get into the car and maybe a couple times more, same trip, for stops but then suddenly I shut the car off, go into a store, come out, car won't start. I'll try it a few times. Then it will start, out of the blue, maybe after ten minutes. I"m no mechanic, I'm an old lady, but what might be going wrong? I like the thought of troubleshooting the entire circuit, piece by piece. HOwever, it's an intermittent problem, that may last only moments before the car starts again. So am I looking for something loose, or something about to fail but hasn't yet, or could this be related to heat, because it happens more frequently when the car has been driven at least 1/2 hour? Any direction you might give me would be very appreciated. Thank you. I don't have the money to buy another used car currently.
Intermittent problems are the toughest. Troubleshooting will have to be done when it acts up, I mean getting a meter in there to find out where the circuit is interrupted. Good luck and thanks for watching.

Yes, the starter was bad. Replaced it, running fine. Until last days. Now clunking when I put on brakes, push on gas, or go over bump. Something in the suspension......

I have a 96 neon it won't start, it clicks the one click and that's it every time I put the key in, turn it and click, like the starter is bad. I replaced the starter and still same problem. Lights work gages work just don't go past one click. Also gas Gage will go from full to empty before it dies out when I did get it started the 2 times. Thought that might help thinking about what it may be

Great short gut to avoid getting under the car to get to the starter to crank it. As for the 42 idots thumbs down,dont break ur head with dummy,there are crash dummies.
I have a 2000 Nissan xterra. the a/t cont fuse blows every time I turn key. I can't figure out what to do. I spent every penny I have and nothing. Can anyone help?
With any short the difficulty is in finding it. You will need a schematic and find all the loads for that fuse. One method is to disconnect them one at a time until the fuse stops blowing and then repair or replace the bad component or wire. Another is to use a ohm meter to measure resistance to ground on that circuit as you disconnect loads one by one. This is a way to save fuses. Good luck, shorts are usually tough to find but hang in there!

I was as driven at 30mph iv just got my first car spent 800 pound on astra sxi 1.6. Then 200 on insurance, next day I got pulled over for haven no insurance by the police I was adamant I had insurance anyways turned out my mum did the insurance bless and for what ever reason in was in her name anyways I had to change insurance again more money another 200 . Now back to the moment were I'm driving 30mph a month after buying the car . Car steering wheel when stiff I couldn't keep driving so I managed to get it to to side off the road turned the car off now when I turned it back on I just got the clicking noise no crank. Now my battery is fine but stil no crank but now there dont seem to be any clicking.. help? Also I just found a wire holding up a bar under the car oh and under the grill off the car is bits off t shirt wrapped up inside ... fuck my life hard
