- I thought it was the starter motor, but it's not! After 6 months of trouble starting my Transit, getting progressively worse, and after lots of testing, someone suggested the ignition barrell switch was a common Ford failure on all these types of key ignition including Mondeo, Focus, Fiesta, Fusion, Transit and Transit Connect. It was such an easy fix, I had to share it.

@rickthespud mate did you have any codes before this happened? Or did it ever cut out on you while driving? Mine cut out while driving and cranks but no start, tried the key in different positions as you suggested but no change? Just trying to gauge what my actual problem is.

Nope, no codes.
If it's cut out while it's running and moving the key doesn't work I would guess that's not it, but change it anyway and see what happens. It's £8 and 5 minutes. 👊

Same problem, mechanic charges Starter motor then he told me could be egr valve or fuel pump,,so I go to scrap yard, they gave it to me for free ,now Starts like new,,,, thanks a lot

Hi Rick, you have saved me from a 2 hour wait for the AA today. Had the same issue as you. The engine would turn over but not start. Gave the key a wiggle and hey presto the van started up. I will be ordering up the new part.

My Transit lost central locking and once turned off it reset heater clock and radio would not work.
Today after changing the lock base everything’s working again.

Thank you so much Rick - I have a Fiesta Mk 6 - had problems on and off for a year with immobiliser issues which culminated into cutting out when driving and then just not starting at all. Just tried this and I'm back on the road - for anyone with Fiesta, you need a flathead screwdriver to depress the clip on the top as you can't get your fingers in.

No it happend over several months immobiliser would cut the electrics and eventually it led to not starting at all. All electrical and starting problems fixed by changing the switch. No errors on dash - @@marcoaurelio6941

Touch wood, mine is fine, but a great video. I might invest in one and keep it in my Transit just in case.
Some drivers tend to be very heavy handed, and although inevitably moving parts wear out, I suspect this causes early failure particularly on frequent stop start journeys. Damage the barrel avoidably and you’ll regret it. I know when I loaned a previous vehicle to someone.

Yeah I do about 10 stop-start drops a day and vans are delivery vehicles so think that's why they wear out. If it starts to fail just manipulate the key and then get one. 👊😉

Thanks great video my mk8 transit cut out on me wouldn t start just cranking over, went back to van wiggled key about in ignition and it fired up and now starting again so i have just ordered one part says it fits mk8

I never thought of that. I've just bought a 2010 transit as spares or repairs for £550 . My Mrs is giving me grief over it and I've only had it last night. She even gave me a hand to push it in the driveway. If this works I will let you know . I did say to the seller I thought it was an immobilizer problem as it worked two days ago fine .He never mentioned that he had trouble before so fingers crossed. I will let you know .

Hi and thanks, I think you've saved me at least £100 on Ford diagnostics....! I tried the pushing the key down on my Transit Connect 2007 and it worked! I'd like to replace the part on the ignition shaft now as you show, but could you tell me what the part is called? I'm not a mechanic, just a woman trying to kit out an old van for camping. Hi Rick. Have somehow a similar Proble. My 2025 Ford Torneo connect 1.0 Ecobooster is refusing to start but would crank directly from the fuse box switch. So apart from turning on the dashboard the they key isn' t able to start the car. Various technicians have tried different appraoches to no avail. ECU module isn' t responding coz they tried to connect a computer to read but failed. Note also that the vehicle would still crank even after disconnecting the ECU modeule; My Question: What exactly need to be replaced? ECU alone? but what about the lockset which is programmed and linked to ECU?-then replace both? Any other component that should be included?

Hi mate , just a quick question. My Ranger 3.0 Tdci 2009 has just developed a problem. I turn the key to crank or start position and hold it on for a ten to twenty seconds, then it responds. I’m get afraid of getting into a fuel station on a busy day because people yell at me for not moving off quick enough. What could be the problem, thanks buddy
Maybe. Have you got a proper key or is it push button? If it's a key then investigate the barrel switch...
Hi mate, quick question - once you changed the ignition switch did that stop the wobble from the key when in the ignition? Reason I ask is mine is struggling to start and its very wobbly so wondering if mine may be on its last legs
Yeah a bit. Some of the movement is in the barrel itself which isn't changed, but some is in the switch. Try manipulating the switch when you twist it, push it in more, lift it up, pull it down.
But for about £8 and 10 minutes it's worth changing. A common problem.

Hello I am French "my English is not great. I would like to know how you go about removing the cover under the steering wheel. I removed the 2 screws but it does not come. Do you have to pull hard on it or there is Are there any other screws? Best regards
On this 2007 Transit it's just those 2 screws, after you've pulled off that panel, which just clips in.

This does happen to my ford fiesta, after driving on the motorway and stopping in each services it doesn't want to start then I have to keep trying after 10 or 15mins it starts again like normal, it does it especially after driving awhile on 60 70mph
Try manipulating the key to see if that helps, but prob change the switch anyway. Likely that's what it is... 👊
@@RickTheSpud yes I will try that trick if not I'll change the switch (because the battery is still months new) which means the same switch as you changed for your van in the video right?
I believe so. If it's got the same style key it's the same switch. Double check when you order it tho. 👊

Not sure mate, even if the key is loose, as long as it's turning the switch, that's all the key does. 🤔
My fiesta 2007 1.3 does fire and motor starts fine but as soon as I move away may hand from key it dies out. So I start the car regulary and if continue to hold the key in ON position ot runs fine but if Iblet go the key it shuts down itself, like it looses connection. Any ideas what could this be? Does it still falls under ignition switch? Thanks
This sounds like it would be this as well. Change this part, see if that cures it, and let me know... 👊
@@RickTheSpud OK, thanks, just to add that there is power to all dashboard lights when key is turned, and when key losses connection in On position all lighes goes off. I'll update

Nope, just the switch on the back of the barrel.

I'm not sure what activates the starter, you'll have to do some digging, but I can't believe it's a similar setup to a twist key...
But something obviously starts it...

quick question. before you actually fixed this did you scaned the van for errors? like did it said something about the fuel pump? because mine (transit connect 1.8 tddi) says.

I didn't but there was no lights on. Never thought of it. If it had no EML on could there still be codes?
in my case there is no EML light on and it points me to no pressure on the fuel pump. The question that pops onto my head is: could no pressure on the fuel pump be triggered from this particular issue perhaps? @@RickTheSpud

Not sure, prob. Does manipulating the key help it! Google for a MK6 transit ignition switch and see if it's the same. 👊
@RickTheSpud I googled it and the switch is compatible with my year transit, I tried manipulating the key but it didn't help, I'm going to grab a brand new battery tomorrow from work and see if that helps as it turns over but doesn't start and then when I try again it just clicks
If it clicks it sounds like the battery.
