    I can't decide between Scarlett 4i4 4. Gen and Scarlett 8i6 3. Gen.
8i6 has all features I could ask for especially S/PDIF IO, but 4th Gen has some hardware feature upgrades you can't simply ignore which affect delay too.
I will be using the interface on an iPad mainly, so that's where the special needs come in:
I need an interface mainly for the input of a guitar(E or ac), a bass, and vocals/instrument-mic(2 mics sometimes) at same time in the worst case plus a Midi Keyboard, you can't do that in 4i4 afaik (only two instruments at once, right?).
I see the need for SPDIF IO because of my use-case having an iPad and in my amateur setup my monitor is my FRFR hifi home cinema system, SPDIF is VERY continent for that and I could send digital sounds to the PC.
Both cost the same right now.
Thoughts on my dilemma? Should I wait for the 4th Gen upgrade on the bigger interfaces and when can they be expected to be released, or will I be be just fine with buying one of those devices? This would be my first audio-interface, maybe I see problems for my use-case where there are none (Esp the need for a SPDIF IO). Several testers compared the generations and measurements show you guys really did a jump there, but maybe a jump I wouldn't even notice except for improvement in delay?

Hi, thanks for reaching out, and I can offer a few items to consider.
-Both the 8i6 and 4i4 only feature 2 microphone preamps, meaning only 2 microphone/instrument-level devices can be recorded at once.
-8i6 features 4 line inputs compared to the 2 on the 4i4 but these can only be used by line-level devices such as keyboard/synthesizers or devices that have been run through an external preamp.
-both devices can be powered by an external power supply, so these will both function well with your iPad.
      - If SPDIF is the only way you can connect to your speakers, then 8i6 may be the choice for you.
Please let us know if this helps or if we can answer additional questions.

@@FocusriteTV Thank you so much for the quick reply and for clarifying the pre-amp/ line-input difference between the both and what it means.
I understand these are noob questions, by jamming with friends you rarely need knowledge about professional audio recording, so thank you a lot for your patience. Also several reviewers seem mix up words or simply don't understand the device too well in the first place, that you can only use two devices at once is one of them and it's reoccurring.
So just to be clear in the end: With the latest 4i4 and the 8i6 I can simultaneously record:
      - Two devices of any kind just fine (Variable-line inputs: 3kΩ mic, 60kΩ line, 1MΩ instr)
      - also two(/four) *additional* instruments simultaneously if they are pre-amped for the fixed line-level inputs on the back (60kΩ)
      - also Midi devices like a keyboard via Midi IN (looks like PC-only but not a problem here, all KB/Synths have USB).
About the SPDIF: I simply wanted to skip one unnecessary DC/AC->AC/DC step in the setup and also reduce noise.
1/4'' TRS/TS to unbalanced RCA adapters/cables will do just fine.
Did I understand everything right or do I still have some misconceptions about these audio interfaces?
I have additional instrument/mic pre-amps for the line-ins on the back. Actually looking forward to compare Focusrite pre-amps to BOSS pre-amps in one setup.
If that's all then I guess the 4i4 Gen 4 should be the weapon of choice to record 4 instruments/mics +1 Midi simultaneously with just this little box. And aside lacking SPDIF this seems to hit all marks then, including 4 balanced outputs.
      That's it, right?
Thank you for the patience then :)
This message probably won't reach the devs but I give it a try:
Hey there Focusrite audio-engineers but especially the business admins, there might be a target audience that will sway their buying decision to your devices:
Amateurs with FRFR speakers powered by AV-receiver amps / non-studio amps.
It costs next to nothing adding one SPDIF-OUT port, you don't even need an IN, but it can make a huge difference for people using mobile devices / non-studio setups at home and want to have their HiFi-setup amps receiving a clean digital signal with zero noise.
      There are dozens of us!
This very common Hi-Fi audio port would raise the value of the interface for many amateur users for little cost.
Please go with an optical-out port for all devices with 4+ inputs.
C'mon man your name is Focusrite, focus on the right thing :)
      Thanks again,
      Cheers!

Glad we could assist. Yes, that's correct. Scarlett 4i4 4th Gen can be used to record up to 4 instruments/mics simultaneously as well as MIDI I/O for capturing/transmitting MIDI at the same time, on Mac and Windows PC. Scarlett isn't designed for use with iPad but would be expected to be able to pass audio successfully with USB-C iPads.
Some Scarlett audio interfaces also feature S/PDIF connectivity. You may want to take a look at Scarlett 8i6 3rd Gen, for example -
