Hi,
Thanks for these videos, but I’m a little confused on the selection of Inst or line.
I have yet to receive my focusrite 4i4, bu does the selection of line or Inst also apply to the two inputs on the rear of the 4i4?
Also what would I select for a drum machine (behringer rd9) and a keyboard (M-Audio keystation 88 Mk3) line or inst?

Hi there,
The two inputs on the back of the 4i4 are balanced inputs for use with line level sources, which would include things like drum machines and keyboards.
If you plug your drum machine/keyboard into the front, you'll select line level.

to record drums should I use the air setting or inst setting
If you will be connecting microphones via XLR, the only setting that applies would be 'Air'. Air mode can be switched on to emulate the character of our classic transformer-based ISA preamp. This is purely a creative decision, It works well on vocals and guitar but you may find that you like the character that it adds to other sources, such as drum overhead mics.
The 'Line' and 'Instrument' settings only apply to the 1/4" Jack input. These settings prepare the input gain range to receive either a Line level (such as synthesiser) or Instrument level (such as guitar) source. When Line is selected in Focusrite Control the 'Inst' light on the front would be off.
Hi, I just received my focusrite 4i4. I have 3 blue yeti x microphones. I learnt I can use up to 4 microphones with the one I got. What kind of cable can I purchase to connect the 3 mics to focusrite and also connect the focusrite to my canon camera. I will also like to have the option to hear the sound in my camera during recording. Please help!
If you have the USB yeti microphones, unfortunately, there is no way to connect USB microphones to an interface, as Scarlett only accepts XLR microphones. Also Scarlett 4i4 does not have a standalone mode, so the only way to get audio to the camera, would be to USB Scarlett to your computer for power, turn direct monitoring on, then send a 1/4 to 1/8 inch cable from output 1 to the camera input. Please let me know if this makes sense or if you have additional questions.

Do I select instrument level, if Im using a guitar pedal like a GT-100 connected to the 4i4?
Yes, you'll still select instrument.

What happens when you plug a 16-bit XLR microphone into the 24-bit Focusrite? Will the sound be converted and upgraded from 16-bit to 24-bit in the recording? Thanks!
Microphones when connected via XLR will always record at the bit depth decided by the Interface. Which is 24 standard for Scarlett devices. We have a help article explaining bit depths and other audio capturing elements, which I have linked below.

5:10 Shouldn't it be that the INST is selected on Analogue 2, not Analogue 1 as shown here, seeing as your guitar is connected to that channel?
Hi there, good catch. Yes, the selection of Inst/Line will match the 1/2 inputs on the interface.
you repeat twice direct monitoring is on by default but HOW TO TURN IT OFF???
If using a Solo or 2i2 3rd gen keep pressing the direct monitor button on the unit until there are no green circles visible. If using a 4i4 or larger unit, you can mute the direct signal through Focusrite Control
If I'm running my electric guitar through pedals, should I be on inst or line?

What if I have a wireless mic that doesn't have XLR having trouble with that
Our audio interfaces aren't specifically designed for use with wireless microphones but in theory, you may find that you're able to use an XLR or 1/4" cable to connect the microphone receiver to the input on your Scarlett.
How can I install 2i2 3rd Gen audio interface in mobile phone how can I use it with my phone??
Hi there, the 2i2 isn't officially supported for use with phones. For best results, we'd recommend using the 2i2 with an iPad or with Windows/Mac OS.
Hi. I just got my 4i4 and a new synth. Can I just connect my synth using 2 TRS cables (two outputs) to my 4i4's line inputs in the back? Or is this the wrong way to do it?
Hi, nope this should work no problem. Your gain control will fully be controlled on your synth, but otherwise, this should work fine.

Can i connect instruments and/or mics while my monitors are on? Only if I have monitor dial all the way down right? Is i the the same with the headphone gain, does it also have to be all the way down when connecting instruments to avoid damage. Or should monitors simply be turned off?!
If you are worried about pops from connecting devices damaging your speakers, there are a few ways you can prevent this. First, you can make sure direct monitoring is disabled in both Focusrite Control and in your DAW, or you can turn your monitor knob down. Other things to do to keep your hardware intact are to make sure phantom power is disabled before disconnecting a condenser microphone, and make sure your monitors are turned off before powering off your interface. please let us know if this helps or if you have additional questions.
Is it better to turn off the PC or can I disconnect the USB connector when the PC is still on?
We would generally suggest that you power down your computer when not in use but you can safely disconnect Scarlett when your computer is switched on, providing phantom power is disengaged and any connected powered monitors are switched off.

Which Scarlett audio interface do you have? The largest model in the range, Scarlett 18i20, can be used to connect and record up to 8 microphones simultaneously. This would be the only option within the Scarlett range if you're hoping to record using 6 microphones.
did i just broke my new bought mic by unplugging it without turning off the 48volt button? :((((((((((
Possibly not. We would advise that phantom power is switched off before removing/connecting the microphone, in order to avoid any possible damage but it is possible that the microphone may be ok.
Excuse me, but there is a mistake in this video tutorial. You say Line mode is used to connect almost everything else, such as amplifier line outputs, synthesisers or digital pianos. This is not right. Synthesisers only function if Inst mode is on.
Guess that depends on the synthesiser. Most keyboards and synths operate at line level.
Keyboards are stereo anyways, so shouldn't they go into the L/R inputs in the back
@@ACABSTUDIOS Line Inputs 3 & 4 on the back of my Scarlett 4i4 are fixed level and produce a weak signal from my Nord Grand. So I've come out of my Nord's L & R line outputs into line inputs 1 & 2 on the front of the Scarlett (MUCH more like it!) then, most importantly, created a studio pair (1-2) in the Output Routing page of Focusrite Control....if I added the inputs separately as 1 + 2 then, yes, it monitors as mono.
