When you study Hogan’s swing frame-by-frame the downward phase waggle action seen in the pre-shot appears to be a rehearsal for releasing the club with a change from radial to ulnar deviation. When I added the that waggle-down action in my swing I realized how much added acceleration, compressing and spin-loft it creates compared to sweeping through the club with wrist as fix angle.
"Possibly because the word waggle suggests that any aimless kind of oscillation fills the bill, many golfers have the mistaken idea that it doesn't really matter how to waggle the club. ...they think the only purpose in waggling is to loosen yourself up so that you won't be tense or rigid. There's a great deal more to the waggle than that. It is an extremely important part of shotmaking..... it is a sort of miniature practice swing, an abbreviated "dry run" for the shot coming up." - Ben Hogan's Five Lessons.
