- Hear our thoughts about if the Simonis 54 or the Olivier Van Meer 57 can be the boat for us!
We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved aboard our sailboat Ran, a custom built Beason 40 in aluminium and untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter in January 2016. There is no set route and we will go where the wind and our minds take us.

Love,
Malin & Johan
That Man Cave on the 57 was awesome. Having the dedicated area to repair and maintain is a winner for me.
I can see why you love this boat
ha ha the look on Malins face when Johan gets exited about the Van Meer, priceless!!
imagine the look on Johan's face when the toilet couldn't flush a malin sized poo
Johan’s passion for maintenance and his tools makes this one a winner. His smile over the engine room is priceless. It is a beautiful boat. Peace
Hi Malin & Johan,
Just my opinion about "De Liefde": As an ocean sailor myself, I do have doubts about the open space inside, when heeled over in heavy seas, this will be a skatefloor to move in.
Next I do have doubts about the metal screws in the deck. For sure they will create a galvanic corrosion. Then the cooking space needs a total makeover, as you know as well that sailing the oceans needs a cardanic stove and by preference a cardanic oven! Plus being able to be wedged in the galleyspace, with deep double sinks and well enclosed workspace seems a plus to me! The boat looks a gem for long distance cruising, but I have the opnion that speed can be seen as an important safety factor, to outsail bad weather.
Anyhow, for sure you will see more great boats and you I'm looking forward to your new discoveries.
Good luck!
Geert
Many good points : ☺️ but surprisingly being “wedged” in a small galley can be very dangerous, I was cooking in a galley and when I saw what the boiling water was about to fall off the stove I couldn’t get out fast enough, compared to a more open galley which led to burn injury that entirely ruined my hostess career on yachts. When I buy a boat myself it will not be an “enclosed galley” for safety reasons. ☺️
My wife and I just finished the RAN-athon. We wish many more adventures and a world of health and happiness for little Vera.
“You missed the best part, the door to the engine room” 😂 absolutely awesome boat. I want that boat 😁
I loved the pros and cons and the way Johan's face lit up when he was talking about the engine room with a door! And selfishly I would love to see the boat/Yacht sail. Congratulations on your baby girl.
Don't miss this boat guys , you'll need the space soon enough and she has been well cared for .The very best of luck, fingers crossed for you
That is a Beauty NO Question you would love the Clothes washer with a Baby......
in the US they would be called "butterfly hatches" :) she is a beauty
Buy the boat. I have been going to boat shows and touring local boats since the late 70's. This is one of the nicest boats I have ever seen. I am amazed at how big a boat I see people single hand with the right equipment. For northern latitudes, it would be awesome. Not really a Bahamas boat, but certainly one we all flock to see when it comes into port. Ok, I will admit, I am as smitten with this boat as you guys! :-)
Good Luck on your quest. I liked that boat too. You'll need the room as your new crewmate grows.
Changing diapers several times per day - you will need the 3000 liter freshwater tank
Says sold on the de valk web site 😊 hope you got it !
The boat sounds like a great boat and it sounds like you guys have made up your mind too. FYI - I would not worry so much about you guys sailing around in this based on how sound and sturdy it. :)
Love that boat. Wood is the only thing that will love you back except of course Malin and family. It is a solid boat that will take you and yours around the world safely and in comfort.
Lol, Johan and that engine room might need time alone... he's in love❤
Man cave
Costs on that boat will be huge. Sails, rigging, engine repairs, dockage all get crazy at that size. I like it too. Enjoy your little one!
+PJ Mullin True enough. But it's a large and nice enough boat that if they wanted to charge a couple $10,000+ for a week's holiday a couple of times per year to defray costs, that would be do-able with this yacht.
But things are more sturdy and bigger so they tend to last more.
@@AshkenaziChristian Highly unlikely, since it will be their home.
@@garysouza2277 People do it all the time, Gary.

with one bathroom?
She is a beautiful yacht. Also having a washing machine and a dryer with new baby is an absolute bonus.
Guys, listening to you talk about this this boat, you have all ready bought it in your hearts. You live once, go with it. BUY IT AND GET MOVING AHEAD! Remember, this isn't a factory boat, this boat was well thought out and from a safety point of view...you couldn't go wrong.
You two are a special couple. That being said. I think it might be difficult to be on that tiller all the time when auto pilot wasn’t on.
Why, it is offen easier to steer
I believe they said it also has a wind vane, also a tiller really gives great feedback...
With Johan's true shown expertise, I think you would keep the maintenance costs a lot less than others that are sailing the same size boat. Hint from a large Cat owner ...... Stay on the hook as much as possible which means get a great dinghy and outboard. This boat is totally a world traveler and minor to major comforts in all weather is more time to enjoy sailing and life sailing! Good Luck to all three of you!
I agree! She is a World cruiser!
Loved Johan's comment "I could live in that engine room"
Love the 57, and this one seems to be a great value, but I share the concern that others have offered about operating costs, the draft, the challenge of two-handing it (with a baby), and the practicality of a tiller on a 57. Lots to check out, including the rigging, and I would also want to verify that there were no galvanic corrosion issues with a lead core in an aluminum keel. Boats where lead ingot ballast in the bilges lies directly on an aluminum hull, without isolation, have experienced perforations in the hull. Looking at anodic index values of aluminum alloys, they can range from 0.75 V, which is very close to lead at 0.70 V and likely safe, to 0.95 V, which could be problematic in a marine environment. Worth checking out.
She sounds like an excellent home and vessel to adventure around the world.
Long keel boats are perfect for sailing around the world! Although that bow truster is a must for that keel.
Reversing you steer the boat with that truster but you have to hold the tiller always.
I like it too... A perfect house that gets you every where... and you can stay some where for longer times.
Lol! You guys are clearly talking yourselves in to that boat.. can’t wait to see what’s next
That boat is a tank. That looks like it would be very safe, full keel, aluminum, well built boat.
A lot of people whine about a big boat. I've had people scoff at me when I tell them I want a 53 for myself.
For me, it's the same at sea and at anchor. It's just trickier in a Marina or tight areas. The advantage is at sea and anchor, it's seakindly and you can stand up while you cook! I love a big boat. Everyone living on a 30 or 32 looks miserable even when they're happy.
Your face says it all, Johan. This one might be hard to say no to. Good luck on this journey brother : )
With a custom built boat, by a skilled and knowledgeable person; you know it was well cared for and maintained, both which are very important and akin to yourselves. The layout and design are practical, spacious and a great conversation starter for your to-be friends along the way. Also, the washer, dryer, dishwasher and water maker are very luxurious; treat yourselves and if it gets in the way, you have all that space for future renovations.
One thru hole that's piped above the water line is genius. Peace of mind for sure.
A lovely boat. 👍🏻 Just what I used to dream of owning myself. Never made it though 🙂. If she meets your lifestyle requirement and you can afford the higher running costs I’d go for it all day. I look forward to seeing your final choice & following your new family adventures.
Malin is grinning just as much as Johan is.......done deal.
I do believe you're right.
I want to see them on that ship
But then her comment, “I will bring you down...” (from the clouds)... 😄
You two make a beautiful “team”!
Your heart has been captured. The logic is working itself out. Your combined skills would be a natural match for this opportunity. You guys are natural stewards for her.
She's a beauty. Go for it....you'll never need another boat.
I think the 57 ft boat is one you could live aboard with kids. Very safe and stable in excellent condition. I would go for it.
Love it! It suits you two so well! Ran II here we go!
Bryan from Vancouver
Oh my, that 57 footer, what beautiful lines. You will love the washer dryer dishwasher with the baby. The engine room is a dream. But I can underestand there is much to consider. You are just starting out as a family. We are a retired couple and are searching for what will probably be our last home before a retirement home. The place we have now is like the boat you seem to like best, it makes one's heart sing. It will be hard to leave, but is getting to be too much upkeep for our age. There is a time for each stage in life. Blessings to you as you make this big decision and move on to the next chapter in your life together and as a family. Gloria and Bruce
Perfect! Congrats!
Thanks for the great in depth discussion. Really cool boat!
It has taken me watching 180 plus videos but I finally figured out that I think you mean “unusual” when you say “special”. “Special” is usually reserved for unusual and very positive. On this boat the engine room is really special whereas the tiller is unusual but not all positive so it’s just unusual. ;-). Not meant as a criticism, just funny that it took me this long to sort it out. Hope you have a really special Christmas with your family and new baby!
Most of your other viewers and I love the Van Meer 57. HOWEVER there are a number of longterm negatives. A 57' boat that is SO slow, means that passages will be twice as long as a modern boat and 3X longer than on a cat. Do you want to have a 30+ day passage from Mexico to the Marquesas? You will have to be on a hook a lot of the time because docking in a marina will be so expensive. The last marina that you stayed in Mexico charges $1100 US a month for this boat. That is almost twice as much PER ' compared to a smaller boat. Of course maintenance will be high so you will have to look for haul outs in less expensive countries world wide. The interior without a luxurious "master cabin" and a private head in this size is not desirable today. One head and a wet one at that with potentially 6 people aboard, OH MY! The boats' appeal is in the northern latitudes so a limited market, more people want to sail in the tropics. These things will have an impact on resale should you ever want to sell her. The boat seems to me to have been designed by an engineer not someone thinking about interior living space and practicality for a number of people. For instance the washer and dryer placed in the most comfortable area of the boat at sea? Lets see what else you come across?
You know you both see yourselves in that boat and your little one crawling around on the floor 🇳🇴⛵️🇸🇪🤣
Don’t wait to long guys. I love it and if you can get the owners to drop the price, knowing that you’ll care for her and maintain her to the high standard she deserves. Without seeing the other two, this ticks a lot of boxes especially with baby Vera joining the crew, nappies, baby clothes needing washed and dried . Its a boat of a lifetime. ❤️🏴
Full time live aboard , the larger one would be hands down the better choice ❗️
Would have a lot less headache's keeping up the maintenance.
As one ages you want everything as convenient as possible ❗️
I❤️It🕊
This is not a boat that you live on, it is a home that you get to sail anywhere safely and comfortably. Used boats are fraught with problems but, I think that this one is the exception to that rule. I didn't see any signs of water damage on a boat that mature so it has to be very tight. The tiller is cool because I think they are more sensitive and responsive. A designer would not hinder his own boat by inadequate steering. No boat is perfect but this ones plus side is massive vs the negative. Find a way to make it happen. Good luck.
Hi from Derbyshire in the UK. We live on a 70ft narrowboat with a tiller and a heritage engine. Don't worry about the keel tanks. Our engine is cooled in exactly the same way and it is a really efficient system. The engine can run for 8 hours and the temperature never gets above 55 degrees. The yacht is truly beautiful and would make a good family home. All the best. Will and Sarah
Wow! This one seems sooo perfect!
Johan can't even sit still. If you get this boat, you always know where to find him, in the engine room. Lots of luck.
We asked our magic eight ball if you should purchase Johan’s “dream” boat and it said “outlook good”, so it’s a given. Lead with your heart.
My wife was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s at age 54, she passed away at 59. All of our plans, everything we worked to achieve, was crushed! My point is go for it. That boat is your ticket to building memories that will last for ever. One never knows what the future holds.
All very excited for you.
I hope the owners aren't watching this, you're not exactly driving a hard bargain!😉
I imagine they already bought it or moved on.
These are filmed ages ago

I went with practical on my last boat and I enjoyed it while I had it but 2 years later, I was shopping for the boat I really wanted. Let your heart lead, in choosing your next boat, and your head to confirm it'll work for you long term.
I'm a believer in following your gut, because your head and your heart will lie to you...
Totally agree ... as long as it surveys well !
@@garysouza2277 Especially when it comes to food!
Love this one love the lay out
These two are awsome.
Van Meer 57 looks like your new home!! Hope you get it. Fair winds . . .
Not real sure what the time lag is between actual date of footage and publication of the video. I note that as of this date, 12-8-19, the listing for this boat shows "Sold." Hopefully, you were the successful purchasers.👍👍
I think the lack of head space and the deep draft would make me walk away. Unless you can modify the head and add a second head. Also, the warmer climates tend to be shallower. 7+ feet of draft will put a lot of beautiful anchorage’s out of reach. Just my two bits. Good luck.
Shallow anchorage’s are restricted when you have that deep of a draft. I think you missed the point.
Congratulations to the new Mommy and Daddy on your beautiful Vera. I know she will love growing up and exploring the world with you both on your " Expedition Ship " .
Lovely beautiful boat.
I forgot about the Engine Room in my earlier comment on Facebook, Like Johan that is a major plus, but I don't think the maint will be a big factor cause you have to do it anyway, But that room will reduce the dread factor.I am looking forward to trials.
Do it!! You clearly love the boat, you’ll need the space with the baby and you only live once! Forget the mooring fees, just anchor that beauty 😍
Can't go wrong on the van Meer, best investement hands down. I am from The Netherlands, and these boats have always been on the top build quality list, and that says a lot knowing how awesome dutch build boats are.
Beautiful boat! Get it!!!
You said you need to do a more comprehensive evaluation, and rightly so.
But from the information you give here, some things, admittedly negative, that I got snagged on.
1-The single masted rig in a 17 m boat means a large mainsail to be handled by at most 2 people.
Needs mechanical advantage in the form of hydraulic or electric winches.Witch means more battery power and added hydraulics.Expensive when in need of service.
2- Although a remarkably large mechanical room, the engine is still below the cabin sole and sandwiched between bulkheads. No advantage there.
3- More footage=more dockage/haulout fees. And of course more paint and time to prep.
4- The pilothouse needs, IMO, a helm to steer in bad/cold weather and malfunctioning autopilot.
5- I have found that proper maintenance of water tanks means running water through them to help to ensure freshness and reduce mold/bacteria
formation. Same with fuel tanks. With such a large capacity, it seems more likely to have stagnant residue or empty surface area.
6- Gimbaled stove is a must, IMO.
7- Two heads/showers in a 17 M boat another must.
8- The wide athwartship space ( 13:26 ) at the settee area doesn't seem to have any support or handholds when thrashing about in a sea.
9- Master cabin in the forepeak is less then ideal. More motion and too far and the need to pass the guest cabins. No aft cabin?
10- A 2.4 m (7'10" ) is nice at sea but limiting in harbors. The Bahamas would be almost off-limits.
And, here in the US anyway, bridge heights, especially on The Intracoastal Waterway, are generally 65 feet.
As I said, just some thoughts and you probably are considering them anyway.
Thanks for the updates, best of luck in your search and I look forward the hearing more from your videos.
No 4 does it for me, a pilot house without a wheel seems a bizarre idea.
It looks like Johan is in love with " de liefde" .As others already said, she has a lot going for her but she is a BIG girl!
I am not worried about your ability to sail her and she will be great for you liveaboards internally, but she will be expensive to maintain.
And yes, that deep keel, great for the big blue, not for some of the shallow warm and exotic destinations.
Great that you are searching in our little country and i hope you find the right one soon
Greets, Hans
Not to mention access to marinas and boat yards. What do you do if you have an emergency and need to haul out and your draft is too much. Think ahead before you jump.
A great boat this is beautiful .
We love you all.
The headlights are phenomenal, the keel is stable and safe. She don’t like to go reverse ... but how often, you like to go backwards?
I fall in love too.
ANTHONY
Color is easy to change, tiller is better for the few times you want to steer, and they need something bigger than Ran.
Its got a DOOR on the engine ROOM!
Gratulerer ;)
Looking forward the the next one :)
Beautiful boat! Congrats on the baby!!
THAT LOOKS PERFECT FOR THE THREE OF YOU just what you wanted
I think they wanted a smaller center cockpit with a fin keel, so ....
Wonderful presentation. When do you take possession? the Old Coastie?
we think you should take the boat that brings a smile to your face. And talking about it alone already does that for you
You two are a wonderful team.
Nothing tops the first love, so the best boat is still RAN. ;-) . But otherwise I would choose the second Classic. It's much nicer and definetly in better condition.
Think you to are very tempted 🤔 Very nice boat and well built. Mantianice and dock cost would play on my mind. Also the deep draft of the keel could limit shelter anchorages to help save on the docking / marina costs. On the other hand it had loads of pluses engine room, full size washer and dryer, great space in the main saloon and the fact it was the designer own boat 👍👍👍 sure you will make the right decision for you both and the new family 🤞🤞🤞⛵🏴
Wow very nice!
Oh wow...that natural light!
ITS A WINNER BREAK OUT THE CHAMPAGNE
What about the sails, rigging and their condition ?
That was an awesome boat!
The boat would make a wonderful home! Cheers

Is the boat insulated and inexpensively heated? Just thinking of all the bare baby changes in northern climates.
Also will it be well ventilated in hot climates?
You can make anything work, that's up to you. Myself I would rather have a Wheel to stear with.

When I was cruising I rarely steered. The windvane and autopilot did most of it. The simplicity of a tiller is nice
That is the one point I don't like. Maybe adding some hydraulic steering helm in the cockpit!?
It’s definitely LOVE!
You guys are just truly special. GOD bless. JC
Listen - I know you've "probably" bought the boat by now - but I want you to know from a subscriber standpoint - what this boat will do for you and your RUclips channel. As of the published date of this video you are at 88K subscribers. Your RUclips analytics are paying you some money - but not a great amount. There are other sailing channels - you know who they are - where the subscriber base and views are triple what you have. One is even 5 times your number. The truth is - your channel is just as good as those channels - if not better - and you need a *special boat* to raise awareness of your channel and draw people in. If they watch you from the beginning - you can keep them. You're a great channel - but you've got to take a bit of a risk and make a real business decision - and getting the boat will be a good decision because it is so unusual in the sailing channel category. Get those subscriber numbers up - grab the RUclips analytic cash and don't look back. I think you can get to 500K subscribers in two or three more years.

That is an interesting thought. I do really hope you are right. Ran Sailing is one of the best VLOG out there. It is not because of the boat they are sailing. . It is because Johan and Malin come across as very nice people that present their adventure without bikinis and ridiculous head lines.
I’m not sure a 57 foot boat will automatically create more interest. It could actually be the opposite as there is less people that can identify themselves with a 57 foot boat. I’m sure there is quite a lot of followers that are dreaming and trying to educate themselves before they take of in their own boat. Many of them can most probably not afford a 57 footer.
But I sincerely hope and believe that Malin, Johan and now Veras personalties is more important than the type/size of boat. Good luck finding your next boat for the purpose.
well said.
You are absolutely RIGHT, well written! GO FOR IT!
I 100% agree, a classic boat Vlog would bring new interest to the channel.
Take her your not gonna find another like her good luck
Exactly right, you are not going to find a boat with her beauty anywhere. Her hull is exquisite and you should buy her. I know that she is a bigger than you should own, but I can see from your behavior earlier that you should own this boat! You will never find one that is so perfectly finished on the inside, or one that is so perfect in overall hull design. Do it.
I think this second one is a' family' yacht this would be so comfortable for a family growing up on, it sails well, you can entertain well on it, and there's everything you need for long passages, I think that you can afford to buy it and maintain it, it would keep you both happy for a long time I feel. She not fast but she will do the job she's made for, good luck!
Looking forward to seeing next ones you look at.
What sails does the 57' come with and what is their condition. They are probably not original so are they the same optimal specification as the originals? What are the replacement or upgrade costs?>
John Tyson that was my thougt as well. OK it is like tyres for the var, s cycle. But it would nice not halvung that cost on top from the beginning
New in 2010...see the listing for all boat details
Don't rush it. Do you really want a 2+ meter draft?
yes. blue water can be icky.
@@pezpengy9308 I personally know of a dozen boats or more with a draft of five feet or less who have crossed oceans and circumnavigated. Just like anything with boats it comes down to experience and competence. Johan and Malin have sailed some pretty skinny water and a draft this deep wouldn't allow them to go there again without dropping the hook much deeper and further away.
Great episode for us all looking for the perfect boat !
That 57' definitely speaks to the heart, good luck guys!
