I have a VJ74 and its a fantastic bass. I upgraded the pickups to an EMG ACTIVE J because i needed that active power to plough through my band's mix. Overall in love with the way these basses are made.
Vintage is a great platform for better pickup and electronics because the wood, craftsmanship and hardware is great. They were awesome before Sire came to the scene and stole the spotlight.
@@JonnyDibble For whatever reason, they are available here in Chile and they aren't that expensive compared to other brands and they are your best bang for your buck, as Sires cost twice as Vintage and the quality and sound is top notch, the only "problem" is the resale value as it isn't so good (but you can find them used for cheap)
yoo thanks a lot for this! I've been looking a detailed review for this at least a week now and just yesterday i was thinking it would be great if you review it and a day later, boom😅
I’d like to see the vintage stingray !! Great review Dibble!! I like the matte look too and a great classic tone!! I’m not a P guy but I’d buy this just to have the overdrive sounded great
The bass sounds good. I'm not a fan of the cosmetic appearance. the distressed look is not my thing. and the machine heads are over the top. but apart from that good sound. wouldn't choose the icon series myself. Wilkinson hardware is ok. I modified a bass myself with Wilkinson pickups. thanks for the review
Nice one, Jonny! I've always heard good things about vintage brand instruments but have never had the opportunity to try one. How does it compare to the OG fiesta red squier CV? Are you planning on reviewing that one as well?
Ooooooooh that’s tough. I really love that CV. I definitely will do a video on it. Hopefully going to compare it to a 2023 model as it’s from 2013 - what does 10 years difference show?!
Hello, I have a fiesta red 2012 CV P and a 2019 Vintage V4 reissued (the same but not reliced and with a maple fretboard). Both original, except for additional shielding and new harness on the Vintage (I don't even remember why I changed it). Both with flats. I honestly love both very much and cannot sell one... The Vintage is very light and resonant with only 3.7 or 3.8kg. The Squier is slightly above 4kg. The Squier has an amazing rosewood fretboard with tiny lovely vintage frets. The sound of the Vintage is a bit more versatile / modern sounding with the Wilkinson pickup, the classic vibe is very vintage, a bit too warm sometimes for some rock or funk stuff, but so nice for vintage stuff or with a pick. All this is only my opinion and only with my basses, they can differ a lot at this price point. Both have perfect necks, action, etc
I keep looking at these and being super tempted. My main bass is a US Jazz, but I fancy a P bass as a secondary, however can’t justify/afford fender prices and really don’t fancy a Squier.. I think I’ll either be really impressed or really disappointed by Vintage
Not keen on the weird relic job with it's very odd ware points, it sounds pretty good but a little thin..! A solid modder, just not one the reliced version though......😎
Hi! The signal chain is the same as the demo later on. Gallien Krueger head into the SVT 810 cab sim ☺️ For the intro picking section there’s a touch of drive from the RAT clone (and lots of attack from me!). All tones are in the Line HX Stomp
@@JonnyDibble Great, thank you! 👍 The GK is also my go to head on helix native. I definitely need to experiment with the RAT and other OD pedals in front of it.
The amp sim sounds really flat/ compressed. I thought it was my laptop speakers at first but it was the same on the studio headphones. They voice recording is very nice though.
Generally prefer the 60s, bit warmer and less highs to my ear. BUT still a great bass nonetheless. Would definitely recommend trying one and buying in a shop 😊
@@JonnyDibble tried one at gc in the states, which is why I grabbed a blemished one off their website. Apparently it's a FSR version with a poplar body instead of nato from Indonesia. Not sure what difference that makes. Think it was returned due to a nick in the neck. I love how it sounds though, even if I wish the g string wasn't so bright lol.
I appreciate the work with the hardware and I do like relic-style instruments, but the distressed paint job Vintage does is just bad, lol. Great instrument, bad relic.
Personally, I don't think they went far enough. They should've added a vintage "hootnanny" strap button behind the headstock like the early Fender basses of its era.
Rosewood is great and I love maple too. I don't like laurel. I have tried walnut and jatoba boards and they are pretty good, IMHO. This vintage looks interesting, as I'm disappointed epiphone and squier have gone all in on laurel.
I had this one and i hated it sooo much The neck is a baseball, the paint job on mine did not look natural at all. It was a very weird matte finish. And the treble knob was just broken.. Soundwise, i absolutely couldn't stand it. Not sure what it was but that b ass was cursed lol Edit: It did stay in tune for ages tho!
@@JonnyDibble you got lucky. They are assembled in at least two factories. One in China, the other in IIRC Vietnam. Mine was Chinese and I have to put a wedge in the neck pocket to get the angle right. Enjoy playing it though, as you say. It’s kind of beefy compared with my MiM p-bass.
Unfortunately, the processing looks the same on almost every instrument. The large "lacquer damage" in particular always has the same shape and position. It is too industrial and uniform.
I mean If you can make relic look amazing they aren't cringe ( for example check out Guitar Restaurant It's a Polish luthier which makes very good relics ) but on this bass It looks very "cringy"

Finally it happened! I have wanted to see you check out Vintage for years!!! Great review. Hope they'll send you a Jazz to try out as well.
I’ve seen people’s comments asking for it! So glad we could finally make it happen ☺️ Thank-you!
Jonny what about that fancy PJ one making by them. That's one in freaky colours named after the French bassist. Could you review it?

Thanks Jonny. I have the V4 non-reliced P-bass and it is my number one Precision. It's just exactly as a classic Precision should be.
Brilliant 💪
I tend to relic my basses... playing gigs and being relatively clumsy.
😁👍
I've been playing my Vintage V4 (the non-distressed version) since 2006. This thing is built like a tank and has never let me down.
Awesome!
I have 2 Vintage basses and they are crazy nice. I get lots of compliments on them.
Really tempted by one these. Thanks for a great review.

Yeah, Sire went hard internationally too, feel like not many people outside the UK know Vintage
@@JonnyDibble they were more present like 10 years ago, but almost nobody sells them anymore, shame

I have to say i love their basses. I got myself the P and the J from vintage. They are so light and the tones are soo good 🤩

Lots to like there! Sounds great and I dig the headstock, but even as someone who likes relics, that one ain't it.
How can machine heads so good be so 💩

Sounds amazing with the obsidian. Especially on the lower notes.
I'm surprised! It actually sounds wicked! Rock it Jonny 🎉
Cheers Jimmy! Certainly no complaints in the tone department from me 💪
It sounds absolutely round and clear. I feel it lacks a little bit of a high end thump but you can solve it on the amp. It is amazing for the price.
My Dream Bass.
I've got the black distressed jazz VJ74 and with a pair of EMGs has become my main bass now, best neck i've encountered so far
