It amazes me how we all do it slightly our own way, first time seeing watch managers doing ladder drill

It's the watch manager's job, as number one on the appliance. If you're all doing it your own way, someone isn't doing it correctly, as per drill book. You should be able to drop into any crew, even from another station, as part of a ladder crew.

Watch manager on a retained pump would have to help put it up riding a crew of 4👍
