I'm getting the synthetic leather edition. I do want to point out that if you are a Confessional Particular Baptist (broadly called "Reformed Baptist") as I am, the Reformation Study Bible does include the 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith.

As a reformed baptist, I do love the notes in the ESVSB quite a bit. I'm a broad thinker and enjoy that the ESVSB includes information about many different perspectives and in a fair and clear manner, something that the RSB only does within the reformed tradition. I actually have the 1st edition of the RSB and love the idea of having the creeds and confessions in my bible, but I have a hard time justifying the purchase since I have the 1st edition already. I heavily considered the new condensed edition of the RSB provided that it at least had the creeds and confessions in the back. I thought that would be a perfect bible to take to church even though it lacked the theological articles and the topical articles in the back, but lo and behold the condensed edition does not have the creeds and confessions which is unfortunate. I feel that those would have made the condensed edition the best reformed portable bible ever. I would have purchased it in a heart beat. It would've been like the good old westminster reference bible back in the day which had the westminster confession and larger and shorter catechism.

Excellent review. I have both and use them both. After seeing Joel Beeke's Reformation Heritage Study Bible, I really wish the The Reformation Study Bible included scripture references for the Creeds and Catechisms.

    Hi Pastor Matt,
It's good to see you on the mend. I'm a big fan of the ESVSB for the color, comprehensive notes, charts, articles and graphs. And I'm thinking of adding the RSB because of the creeds and confessions. The RSB, I think, has always been black and white but it's concise reformation references make it unique in the marketplace. Thank you for another fine review. MikeInMinnesota

Nice Review. PCA myself and I have both RSB and ESB. I like to carry the ESB as it is a little broader if I'm using it to evangelize. I have diamond reformed LOGOS on the phone and tablet but it's hard to navigate compared to having it all on one page in front of me.

Wish this and other study bibles had the two column page format instead of one. I like having reference notes in the center column area also. The other item of desire is to have the larger book style script set to make it easier for longer study periods as it is easier on the eyes especially at night.

Thanks for the video. My pastor gave me a ESV SB when I started attending there. I was just wondering, how come reformed theologians accept Wayne Grudem ? I know that he wrote Systematic Theology, but it baffles me why the reformed camp would have no issue with some of Wayne's teachings.

    • @erichchristian8743
      @erichchristian8743 7 лет назад +2

I've been around the Vineyard movement community myself to and I'm wondering this as well. I haven't picked through Systematic Theology- but I will say this- per his definition from the book on page 21- “Systematic theology is any study that answers the question, “What does the whole Bible teach us today?” about any given topic. (page 21)- I find that to be a poor definition of Theology. Here's why- it doesn't pertain to the historical/etymological roots of theology's meaning- which is Latin- and the roots are- theo-god ology- knowledge/study of- ergo the most clear definition is the Study/knowledge of God. There's almost an implied supposition of literalism upon the grounds of The Bible being the Word of God. To fit the two operates of that supposition. I suspect under those grounds the reformed camp doesn't find issue with it... That said though the vineyard community is a bit of a bother and I'm wondering if Wayne Grudem himself endorses the idea that the pastors in this community don't need or shouldn't go through formal/seminary training- that in and of itself bothers me greatly.

I am traditional (free will) Southern/Conservative Baptist and have both the ESV and Reformation Study Bibles and while there are obvious points of disagreement (mainly soteriology) I find both to be nice references. The ESV Study Bible definitely leans Reformed but provides excellent all around scholarship useful for any biblical Christian (ie Protestant). The Reformation Bible is as you said a much narrower theological focus but still has a lot of “meat on the bone” for those of us who believe the Bible over Calvin.

Matt, I currently own the 2nd edition of the 2005 Reformation Study Bible (it has maps in the back). While I'd love to have the revised version, I know I'd never lug it to church, due in large part to its size and heft. I would consider purchasing the condensed version, but I'm curious: Do you know if that would be an improvement over the 2005 edition I already own in leather? I'm fearful that it would be a bit of a wash, which would be a rather costly wash. What say ye?

I purchased the hardback of this. And the one thing I didn't like was the extremely thin pages. It sounds very picky, but after owning the Bible for only about a year now my pages are already starting to rip and tear. If you don't close the Bible perfectly the pages will crease and wrinkle, causing them to tear and rip. Has anyone else had this issue? I love it besides that. But I was really hoping the hardback would be a little more durable to take with me to church, and maybe an EDC. But I've already retired it as my home Bible due to the wear and tear it's already received after just one year.
Has anyone else had this issue or am I being too picky?

The Crossway bibles usually have some minor 'rippling' which I find kinda annoying but this bible looks like it doesn't have that issue. God point. I kinda wish Crossway would consider creating an alternate form of the ESV: multiple volumes (at least two, or even three or four!). Then they could use a slightly heavier paper and slightly larger font. Each volume would, of course be lighter and easier to carry. There is an ESV with LARGE FONT, which I might get a copy of. Naturally, it will be even bigger and heavier than the regular one.
That's why the old Encyclopedia Britannica had as many as 32 volumes with limited volume sizes: the books were so much easier to handle and read that way, though the font was still pretty small. With 44 million words, it was pretty hard to get it all in there, even at 32 volumes.

Are all our future sins already forgiven or do sinning believers have to practice 1Jn 1:9 to make it to heaven. Thanks for help.

Thank you for that link; it reclarified Pastor McArthurs’ position much and he is clearly not a Dispensationalist, and this is consistent with his other sermons and writings.
Remember the Ninth commandment says not
To hear false witness, so let’s not attack on false pretense or repeat rumors. The World system is not an example for our kingdom.

God be with you forever, I don't know you in person but God knows you. God ministered to me in a revelation when I was on your profile to see things around you, I saw blessings but spiritual forces are holding onto them. In prayers I saw dark force in the realm of the spirit monitoring and plotting delay in your life with a motive to destroy all you've been working for. But as I speak to you now, this dark force time is up. I urge you to render a hand of favour with anything you can afford to give to this Orphanage home (DIVINE MOTHERLESS FOUNDATION) somewhere in Edo state Nigeria before 3DAYS with faith. As I raise my hands towards heaven and pray for you, they shall serve as point of contact wherever you are, you will receive double portion of Grace to excel and total restoration of breakthrough in your life and in the life of your family. Ask for their account details and donate to them. Call the M.D in charge of the orphanage to get their account details. (+2348167600219) or Email them on

I like much that the Reformation has brought forth, but I cannot, based on over 70 years of Bible Study, believe in the Reformation concept of Election. Free Will given by God seems to have insured that even though God is not willing that any should perish, that many, if not most, have chosen to reject His wonderful gift of salvation. I do not wan t to argue this ancient question, rather I have hopes that you can direct me to a Study Bible that supports the view of Election that I so briefly stated. Please help me if you can.

Donald Denison You're very welcome Sir. Sadly, as far as I know, the Macarthur Study Bible is available in ESV, NASB, & NKJV. But then again, I may be not that updated. I'm also hoping that it is available in the Authorized Version

Dear sir: Sadly it is not offered in the Authorized/KJV. Further, I did some research of my own, and found The Reverend Mac Arthur is a convicted Dispensionalist, many such believers including him hold views that I assert are contrary to a whole reading of scripture. I will stick with the works I purchased as a freshman in high school in 1955 though they are nearly worn out from use, they are: A Goatskin covered Cambridge Concord KJV, a Matthew Henry Commentary, and a Cambridge edition ofCruden'sConcordance. They have served me well thus far, and will see me home. Go With God Sir.

I find it ironic that you can a have "Reformation Study Bible" and have the ESV, a translation which does not use the NT text of the Reformers. Nonetheless, it looks like a "good" study Bible. Very detailed.

What does that have to do with anything should it have actually happened? This is an ad hominem attack and is a fallacy. WE ARE All SINNERS, including YOU. Do you think your sins are less than Calvin’s or anyone else’s?

Calvin actually had no power to put anyone to death... In fact he was against burning Servetus at the stake. He plead for him to be beheaded instead but that request was denied.
Servetus was a heretic who denied the Trinity and claimed to be divine himself. He wasn't burned for disagreeing with Calvin.

@@bobbyrobby3600 again, another ad hominem attack. You and many others when they make this claim, seem to forget that you don't attain sinless status once you are reborn. From what I can gather the one who was burnt - Servetus - was a heretic who rejected the trinity, would not repent and Geneva was under biblical law. If Calvin and by extension, Geneva, was following the law of the land according to the Bible then what was done was in accordance with said law.
Attack the idea, not the man, else you are arguing illogically.

"Not equal with the bible, nobody claims that!" yet bound in the covers of a bible so with some implication of superior authority over other works that have not been bound in the covers of a bible. So yes, not equal with the bible but very exalted and authoritative.

The most accurate Bible on this planet earth is "The New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures" with evidences available. The Bible clearly teaches only one true religion, so, why are their several different religions coming from this Book? Do you know the answer? Do you want to know this simple answer?

    • @edgarrangel1509

Actually the New world translation has been given a universal thumbs down by MANY biblical scholars. The translators of that Bible did not even have Proper education on the Hebrew or Greek language (only One out of the five translators) Former governing body member Raymond Franz listed Nathan H. Knorr, Fredrick W. Franz, Albert D. Schroeder, George D. Gangas, and Milton G. Henschel as members of the translation team, adding that only Frederick Franz had sufficient knowledge in biblical languages. This translation is actually extremely biased. All to fit the Watch tower’s evil and deceiving theology.

Now, the bible we have are translations, not Gods indirect inspired word. Remember that. The Greek txt are Gods inspired word. By the way, NASB bible is the one that is closed to the Greek. But still, if you want a very close translation, get the Greek txt.
And don’t blame the book. And why are there so many different directions? Does that mean God only stay where you go church? If your in that church, God is there, but not in other denominations? No, shame on you.
It must be because you don’t see that He’s church is not a building, but humans that got justified by grace without work, so we should not boost about our own merits or stature.
There where divisions in Jesus time to, the Pharisees and Sadducee, Romans and, high ranked people, normal people. There where also some other kinds. Jesus came Israel first, but did not turn any away. He did see people and they in need and faith, not buildings or classes.
He talk about unity, so let each of use practice this by manifest Gods love for the brethren, where every they may be.
God does not see denominations, but you do. And you already stumbling on your own words. Who are you to point who is with Him or not?
