Loved the intro! I read Hard Times last year and I think you will be pleasantly surprised! I enjoyed it. I’m looking forward to all your Victober videos, as well as the other hosts videos! 😃
That was a rather grand intro, right there. Was so glad to see Cranford here, it's the only Gaskell I've read, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I always forget about reading Victorian poetry - I really should strive to add that to my TBRs in future. Good luck with your Victober - I look forward to hearing how you get on with all of the books.
What a lovely and ambitious TBR you have! I always come away from your channel with a longer TBR of my own (such a good thing!). I read/listened to Hard Times earlier this year and really enjoyed it; hope you do, too!
So many exciting books! There are plenty I haven't read here, so I'm excited to hear your thoughts all on these. Also SO EXCITED for you to read Olive.
Such a lovely and appropriate intro. I’m in on the knit and listen. I’ve already started knitting b/c it’s been soooo long since I’ve done any. I’m going to try to finish sock #2...I did #1 long ago! I’m putting Barbara’s History on top of my TBR. I love the Amelia Peabody series and have heard she was inspired by an actual person. Victober...so exciting!
Ok, I might have to add _Cranford_ to my TBR this year because it sounds delightful! It's been on my shelf for almost a year, so I'm going to try to squeeze it in. Thanks for sharing!
This is SO exciting! Such a great TBR, Kate! From your list, I am most curious about Barbara's History by Amelia B. Edwards, as I am always looking for new-to-me authors :) And I also have Riddell's A Struggle for Fame on my TBR, so I am looking forward to your review! Can't wait for Victober!
I loved this format with the opening titles and your reading the openings. I love that edition of Cranford but I can't find a copy of it, I'm currently reading Wives and Daughters and it is special, I think it will end up being my favourite Gaskell. What a wonderful TBR, you've highlighted some female authors I'd never heard of before and I definitely want to read Olive. I'm hoping to have my TBR up soon!
I’m definitely adding “The Struggle for Fame” to my GoodReads. Maria Edgeworth is a favorite of mine, but she’s the only classic female Irish author I’ve known about. Looking forward to reading another one! Definitely planning to check out Amelia B. Edwards, too, in the future. She sounds fascinating! I’m excited to hear you’re reading An Ideal Husband, also. I love all of Wilde’s plays, but the dynamic between Lord Goring and Miss Mabel always makes me laugh and steals my heart. Happy Victober Eve! 🎉
I plan to read _Cranford_ for Victober too! It’ll be my first Gaskell... maybe not the most popular choice for a first Gaskell, but I’m excited! Also looking forward to reading Wilde’s plays with everyone.
What a great list! I am also reading George MacDonald and George Eliot. Barbara's History sounds so interesting; I'll have to add it to my (extended) TBR. Hard Times is one of my favorite Dickens novels. Although it is about industrialism to an extent, it's more about the dangers of utilitarian philosophy, and the emptiness of a life without imagination. It doesn't feel quite like his other works, but it's stuck with me in a way that his others haven't, too.
I'm also reading A Struggle for Fame after hearing Juliana (theblankgarden) talking about it, I love the gloomy opening of it. So interesting about George Macdonald's influence on Tolkien and relationship w Lewis Carroll, I'm adding that book to my to-read list. So many good books here, I look forward to hearing about the books you get to this Victober!
Curious Reader I’m hoping we all love it! Yes, he was a very interesting man. I feel like his children were very lucky to have such a whimsical father.
I loved 'The Princess and the Goblin' as a child, I remember it being read to me, and the pictures. There is a sequel 'the Princess and curdie'. It has made me want to re-read it now hearing you talk about it, I don't think I every really realised it was Victorian. I hope you both of you enjoy the book!
What a great intro and intriguing TBR! I am adding the Struggle for Fame to my Victober reading (the pink spine was a definite influence☺). I plan on reading The Duke's Children by Trollope, Wyllard's Weird by Braddon, rereading Cranford, and Hester by Margaret Oliphant. Oliphant was supposedly one of Queen Victoria's favorite authors. If I have time I hope to add rereading The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, Wives and Daughters, and North and South. So many books, so little time. Thank you for a lovely video.
susan baird Thank you! That sounds like a fabulous selection of books! Ooooh I looked up Wyllard’s Weird and it looks like it’s so interesting! I hope you have a lovely month of cozy Victorian reading.
I will have to look into Amelia B. Edwards because I LOVE the Amelia Peabody series! I hope we both wind up loving Vanity Fair! I'm interested to hear your thoughts on Olive and Hard Times. Of all the Dickens novels, Hard Times seems like one I probably won't like. I adore the Goblin Market! What a great TBR, Kate! I love the thought of the knit and listen! I can't knit but I can crochet. Since I'm also reading Adam Bede, it seems perfect! Happy Victober!
I loved that you read the first paragraphs of each book. It just made me read all the books on your TBR. I have read Adam Bede, I would love to hear your opinion about it. I love Hard Times by Charles Dickens. It’s actually not hard to get into. It’s short and fun. Hope you like it.
What a fantastic list! I hope you enjoy Vanity Fair. It took me a little while to get into the style, but there are not many books that have echoed in my head as much as Vanity Fair has. If you ever get a chance to see Kate Hamill's drama version of the book, don't pass it up!
I really enjoyed hearing you read the first paragraph of these works! I love Vanity Fair. It's been several years since I read it though. I hope you have a great Victober!
Oh, my gosh, I love your into!! It was so pretty! Hope you enjoy your books. I can't knit but the knit and listen sounds fun... I guess now's a good time to learn haha
Elaine Howlin Thank you, Elaine! Oooh I would love it if you did! A garter stitch (every stitch being a knit stitch) scarf could be a really fun thing.
I am also reading Vanity Fair for Victober. I started it in August but put it down to read Anna Karenina so I am excited to read the second half in October! I have loved it so far and I hope you do too.
I’m reading Wives and Daughters this Victober! It’s the first time I’m reading this, and I know it’s a favourite of yours, so I can’t wait! I look forward to your thoughts on Vanity Fair, too! I’ve had it on my tbr far too long.
Melissa Kay aww Yay!!! Make sure you let me know what you think! The Bonnets at Dawn podcast has a couple of episodes where they discuss it and they’re very fun. Yes, Vanity Fair is such a famous novel. I’m very much looking forward to seeing what it’s all about.
I can't wait to start this buddy read with you! It seems like a long time since we read Christy. I can't wait to hear what you and Peter think of George MacDonald 😊
I’m so excited to read Crawford and I think I really need that edition of Christina Rossetti! Aw I’m so excited that Peter is getting in on the action! Hopefully there will be some vlog footage of him participating. :-)
I should bring some of the longer books with me to visit my sister. Like get a head start. I bought a collection Wilde's plays, so I'll be reading the group reads too.
Knit and read sounds wonderful! I cannot wait to see you knitting creation that has been imbued with George Eliot's words. And I am so excited that you are picking up The Goblin Market, we can definitely chat about the poems. (Also, huzzah for The Princess and the Goblin - I thoroughly enjoyed that book and I am still on the hunt for the sequel The Princess and Curdie)
SOOOO EXCITING! 😀😀😀 this is such a diverse and intriguing tbr! Lots of works I have not heard of before and some classic classics....if that makes sense. I am so excited for our buddy read...cant wait 😀😀😀
Tom Reads Things Thank you! Yes, I did have some really iconic books on there and then also some more obscure ones...Our buddy read is gonna be some good old fashioned Dickensian fun. 😍
I loved the Princess and the Goblin animated film growing up, but I've yet to read the book, and I never realized it was Victorian. I recommend the film if you've never seen it before. I'm curious how close it is to the book.
I loved this so much specially you reading out load each of the book now I want to read some of these . I have the princess and goblin so maybe I should read it for victober not sure.
What a fantastic TBR! I'm so excited for Victober and I can't wait to post my video soon! Right now, I'm in the throes of moving and all of my books are piled on the floor in an empty room. It should be interesting to film there. I'll be reading Hard Times as well! (or rather finishing the last 50-100 pgs of it hopefully). And I love how Peter is joining Victober! I somehow missed hearing about the Knit-and-listen earlier. I usually get into knitting once a year. I may try to join if I can find my knitting stuff in the moving disaster, but will you be doing more Knit-and-listens in the future?
Blatantly Bookish oh my goodness - moving can be so disorienting! I hope you’re able to find your knitting supplies! I hadn’t thought of it yet but possibly - I go through phases with my knitting but I’ll keep it in mind!
I hit " like" before the intro was over 😆 .. What a great selection of books! I had a Hard time with Hard times but as with all Dickens it is well worth the read
Eeeeee so excited! Great list, I'm especially excited to hear what you think of Hard Times. I'm always so intimidated by Dickens before I start, but then his books are always so much more engaging than I expected. Here's my TBR: thebookkeepingblog.wordpress.com/2019/09/23/victober-tbr-plans/ I would love to see anyone and everyone elses because I'm obssessedddddd :)
Can I just say I 💖LOVE LOVE LOVE 💗your Intro photos and music!!!! They really get me in the mood to read Victorian stories!
Thank you so much! I spent a fair amount of time on it so it's very fun to finally share it with everyone!
Loved the intro! I read Hard Times last year and I think you will be pleasantly surprised! I enjoyed it. I’m looking forward to all your Victober videos, as well as the other hosts videos! 😃

I will have to pick up many of these!!! Your tastes are similar to mine in books, so I always look forward to what you are getting/reading.
What a lovely and ambitious TBR you have! I always come away from your channel with a longer TBR of my own (such a good thing!). I read/listened to Hard Times earlier this year and really enjoyed it; hope you do, too!

Kristen Richardson aww That is so sweet of you to say so! Thank you!
Ok, I might have to add _Cranford_ to my TBR this year because it sounds delightful! It's been on my shelf for almost a year, so I'm going to try to squeeze it in. Thanks for sharing!

My only difficulty with Hard Times is the dialect, but it is otherwise very readable. Good luck this month!
I’m so excited to read Crawford and I think I really need that edition of Christina Rossetti! Aw I’m so excited that Peter is getting in on the action! Hopefully there will be some vlog footage of him participating. :-)
Rainey Day Reads Yay!...Yes, I’m happy I splurged on it now. Yes, I’m hoping to vlog each week.
Hard Times is good. If Charles Dickens and Elizabeth Gaskell had a book baby it would be Hard Times😆
Bobbie Sue Davis Well that definitely sounds like something I could get into.
I should bring some of the longer books with me to visit my sister. Like get a head start. I bought a collection Wilde's plays, so I'll be reading the group reads too.

Anna Alindajao Yay! I’m so glad to spread the word.

What a TBR! I’m intimidated just hearing about it. 😂
Olive sounds interesting. I’m looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the story.
😂 We'll see how manageable it is...Yes, I'm really hopeful it will become a new favorite!
I loved this so much specially you reading out load each of the book now I want to read some of these . I have the princess and goblin so maybe I should read it for victober not sure.
