David, first THANK YOU, for an entertaining and educational video presentation. This is my 1st ever comment on a video - tells you how much of an impact you make. As a military vet that did a little DoD IT, I am just now starting to dig into a possible future in the Salesforce community via the Hire our Heroes program. I have been pondering on pursuing Salesforce for over a week, the way you broke it down so simply was EXACTLY what I needed to hear. Side note: I also enjoyed your career personality test, gave me even more to think about. =)
David I'm so excited after watching this. First you made me realize that I should skip the admin certification and dive into the Developer Certification. I love excel and I am use to the grind. Thank you for giving this great insight.
@@vasundharakandi3228 If you want an easy to learn all-purpose language, go with Python. Knowing Python plus SQL (also very easy) is a great foundation for a data analyst career. Put Tableau or Power BI on top, build a portfolio, and you're good to go for your job hunt.
After college. I thought I will somehow love coding and stuff. Got my first job at an MNC, and got a Salesforce project. It's been 2 years and 4 certifications since then. But still just getting through it. And Hating everyday on the job. Wish I saw this video a couple years ahead! But this info was on point!!
I would also add high stress to this list. I am a certified System / Application architect and not only do you need to stay on top of all the updates and new things going on, customers and projects are very demanding. So you need to learn new things 24/7 and at the same time be super focused every minute you work, as a bug in production can cost a lot of money.
Agree, but what is not stressful these days? And quite often, we make our work stressful ourselves. Once negative stress surpasses the positive one and it lasts longer then it is the right time to ask whether it is worth our health and mental well-being. If not, do something about it, reduce the workload, the time spent on projects, etc. Yeah, Salesforce is bringing updates all the time, but is it really important to follow everything? A high-level picture is enough. I have so much work to do just with SF Marketing Cloud itself, can’t imagine jumping on Sales/Service/Commerce..., but yeah, I might replace the cloud in the future, who knows.
Now Salesforce is totally into Einstein , lot of Data Scientist out there using salesforce.. so i guess, salesforce already answered your question on why they want us to learn salesforce .. :)
Thank you for posting the test. I got equal reds and blues. After 24 years in one position it's hard to choose which direction to move in. @@TT-ls1yz I did leave my job, but within a month my mother entered End Stage COPD and I ended up not getting a job but taking care of her for six months on hospice in my home. Interestingly during a casual conversation with someone I mentioned that I'd be willing to do part time work at home while my mother slept and was blessed to be matched with a boss who was looking for someone with my knowledge base to groom to take over a leadership role in Data Analytics when the current employee retires. So far I'm finding it fun and they are amazed at how little training is required. I think sometimes it's hard to see how your skills can transfer, but they can. Short story is I got lucky, I hope you do too.
I'm currently working as a Salesforce Support and I hate every single minute of it. I work 10hrs a day from 10pm to 8am, and just earlier I worked from 10pm to 10am. I would be so much happier if it was a day shift.
@@dvdkliu the work is not so tough when you have colleagues that support and help you, but I cannot handle the work schedule. It has affected me physically and mentally so I'm actually quitting today because I cannot go through another day having mental breakdown because I'm just so tired. I barely get sleep in the morning.
I took saleforce personality test and my result is: 50% dev 50% admin. Now I am confused :) By the way, you have great channel! You have inspired me to give saleforce a try in my mid 30.

Bro, I'm a Salesforce Developer and I've never been happier with my job ever!!! I'm a full fledged Java Engineer( developing major projects), a Senior Java Developer. 3 years ago I started Salesforce and my salary tripled! I love my job, I love APEX and I'll just continue getting certified, already got my Administrator Certificate and now going for Platform Developer 1. Sweet 😁

I hated this video in the first 1 minute and LOVED it after the next 5. I am knee deep into re"learning" Salesforce (almost an oxymoron in a way) after being away from it for just a bit and took the chance of watching this viewpoint. Am I weird that I work in Salesforce everyday and I still love learning more? The only bad thing is we are highly customized, so I don’t get to use a lot of the out of the box Salesforce.

I started with Salesforce 3 years ago. After 8 months joined a project to integrate SKUID over Salesforce. Since then for over 2 years worked with SKUID just to put a layer over Salesforce. Now... 1. Nobody cares about SKUID... 2. I still don't know Salesforce. i.e. 3 years of career leading to nothing for me but to start over with learning data science. 🙁🙁🙁🙁 Sometimes I wish I had never started with Salesforce. 😓

David. In my view, those were the good old days in 2010 where we used to hire Admins and Devs with 80-100k by knowing few workflow rules and some apex triggers, but now we are ready to pay 150+ but need someone knowing everything as we don't want someone to write tons of workflows and bunch of process builder just bcz they only know admin work and they can exploit the features which will make things messy. My point to new engineers is make use of Trailhead and try to learn all alternatives when you enter into job market: Low-level knowledge: Workflows, Formula, Rollups, Process builders, Flows, Triggers, Queuable, Batchable, Schedulable, Aura and High Level - LWC, Integrations, CPQ/Billing, Territories, OAuth, Handling large data, most importantly which one to use when..and again everything is in Trailhead, thus hit the bulls eye. Again congrats to the awesome work you are doing by giving back knowledge to the community!!

David, that was another great video! I was in a "Robotic Process Automation" project earlier and I worked my a** off to change my domain and get into Salesforce as a developer and I succeeded. It would be great if you share some stories of yours where you faced difficult times and solved critical problems working with salesforce.

Hello David, I'm 22 years old and recently began my salesforce path this March as a Business Analyst Intern at a Salesforce consulting company. I'm really enjoying the job and I love to learn everyday, mostly because 5 months ago I started with zero experience on SF and I only know the basics of coding. I enjoy your videos because they give me pros and cons about the industry I just entered, I would love to continue in it but this video gave me second thoughts because you encourage to seek other industries. I know I can keep the full time job after I graduate and get promoted to SF consultant, but I would love to get feedback if I should stay where I am or try in some other place. Stay safe.

I actually like Excel. I know most developers crap on it but it has its uses. For me, it's faster and easier to ship than some alternatives like Jupyter notebooks or Python executable.
What if someone study Salesforce Fundamentals, Apex Coding (learned from your course, it was Awesome!!) puts time and dedication towards learning Salesforce for at least 1.5 years and at the time of interview the interviewer says we'll look your Salesforce skills when you'll join us, first write that Java Code. /* It feels like stupid putting time and effort learning Salesforce, instead learn Java */

Well, I think in my country there is a lack of Salesforce Developers, because I just had an internship with Salesforce and I constantly receive job offers. There were two times that I told the recruiter that I just studied and they didn't care, they want me to work anyway xd
Jobs are going to sky rocket by 2026. I feel if anyone just stick with it, stop watching negative videos about the market being to competitive and saturated, start learning salesforce, making projects, joining a POSITIVE community, you can land that role and job in no time.

How did you conclude the salesforce professional average income is $150k? I presume you mean the US only, but even then I have looked around and I cannot verify your statement.

I'm assuming you're relatively young and sharp enough to pick up any tech stack. Given that, I'd say go general (something more modern than Java / Spring though). The exception is if you want to be closer to the business than the tech, in which case I'd say stick to the Salesforce path. Good luck!
I second David's viewpoints. I'm a Java dev having dipped my toe into SF and after a few months now, I left the SF world going back to traditional development. A reddit user described it as "SF Admin clickwork development physically hurts". In SF you do as much as you can the admin click configuration route then write a bit of code on top of it. For me it was way too much of this kind of declarative propramming. I very soon missed the freedom and options I had whithin the other tech stacks. I missed using my brain for logic and design rather than using it for learning click routes by heart. Hunting certs felt like being back at uni, and I needed to learn stuff that's not going to be supported any more in the upcoming months (workflows, Process Builder). The amount of "what were they thinking?" + palmfacings I had in that short amount of Admin practice was immense. Transitioning from Java etc. to SF might be a different experience than getting into SF without having tech background. If I could go back in time, I wouldn't listen to all the hype out there but a) get a free Trailhead account b) take your time and try a few badges and a few Admin scoped Superbadges c) imagine that all those details will be part of your cert exam in Admin certs, Platform developer certs and part of your daily work routine as a SF dev. If I'd still like it I'd give it a try. Tech job profiles are in high demand and probing different tech stacks in your early career isn't going to hurt you (on the contrary: you will gain insights and experience that will support your future career steps). Having a general stack as a foundation leaves you with more options since you are equipped with skills and tools that are applicable in both the SF and non SF world. Having SF only skills and then going into general dev roles leaves you without knowing about for example databases, DB configuration, migration and design, how to choose and connect all those tools, which framework to use and why etc. As a SF dev you get used to the out of the box functionality. I had the impression that SF devs have an "I only have to use it I don't need to understand it" attitude. Best practices as SW developer were rarely to bee seen in the SF world although it is preached by APEX hours. No clean code, no TDD, test asserts like assert(1, 1) just to get the code coverage because nobody in SF knows how to write maintainable code. A Senior SF dev recently told me "SFDX CLI has only been on the market for 4-5 years so nobody really knows the CLI characteristics of that tool yet" and I was like "since 5 years already?". I used it as a CLI with flags and extended outputs and not as a CTRL + SHIFT + P clicky thing. Also see the postings on "why SF devs don't feel like real devs". Writing LWC's was the most fun part for me in the SF world, it felt pretty much like a traditional FE Framework using JavaScript. Working in SF left me hungry and thirsty for tech and I now am able to fully enjoy it again.

@@IoriBernstein This is also one of the main reasons SF development sucked for me: the sales attitude/mindset leaked into the engineering culture. Profit over quality agility and sustainability. Delivering shitty code with tons of technical debt seemed to be OK as long as the customer is stuck with using Salesforce. And once you've invested into something you rather stick to it than changing over to an alternative. This money-focused attitude is also one of the main motivators of traditional devs changing to SF dev careers (and being happy with it).

I'm an introvert and highly antisocial.. Does that mean I should not take salesforce.. I'm almost all set to go for it because I came to know that it doesn't require any coding. Now after listening to you I'm really scared to take Salesforce because my biggest concern is I'm an ultra antisocial and introvert than coding... Please say something should I still take or suggest me any better option for me with less or no coding. Now I'm 29 with no IT background. So please suggest me keeping that in mind sir...
I'm really antisocial too (it may not seem like it but I work really hard to break it) and development is perfect for that! Especially at larger companies. If you're a very talented programmer though and get antisocial it'd be better to go into general backend coding

Before, I've worked in a bpo for 1yr and I hardly spoke to anyone for the entire year except a few that I'm close to. And my manager was fan of listening to my voice atleast once in his lifetime. @@bang.marcel0 I'd agree with David that Salesforce admin is good, but he's also right in that there are very few jobs for admin specifically (although they are out there since I can imagine many organizations don't need much more than custom objects, fields, and the like). You'll still be working with people and helping them with their specific problems though. And I'd say a good understanding of logic would be a great head-start in the field (as I can imagine, for example, admins would still touch Salesforce flows which would end up driving a lot of custom business processes).
Hi David. I took one of your test, and it's inclined more towards admin with 7points and technical architect 6points. As you said SF developing can be learned easily. Do you think if I learn SF admin course first and than catching up with developing certification will be good .
I only like second point as every Salesforce developer can work as a Salesforce admin so it's better to ignore Salesforce admin role. Other all are normal points.
I am a project manager at an IT Company and I started there as a QA Tester. I wanted to know if I can apply for QA jobs at Salesforce without knowing anything about Salesforce software just I would apply for a job in any other company?
I'm gonna guess you can but given I don't work for Salesforce or have familiarity with their QA roles I'm not totally certain. Either way, apply to jobs whether you're qualified or not!

E commerce on Salesforce is pretty niche right now. I would evaluate where SAP is in this space and choose accordingly. The more mature SAP is the less likely I would personally invest in it
Dude, you are the man, but this kills me every time you say it lol. Excel and Salesforce are entirely different *experiences* even if at the *database* level they operate in a similar way. I absolutely despise doing anything in Excel, and I absolutely love working on Salesforce, in every capacity. I literally look for excuses to build something in a DE that I'll actually use for personal reasons. To imply that it's the same as using Excel is a major oversimplification of the role that UI and UX design play in one's overall experience of software. Maybe it seems the same as Excel from the perspective of someone whose primary job is programmatic dev? Certainly not the case for any other Salesforce role. That aside, enjoyed your intro to Apex course. You should do one on LWC :)

I'm currently working as a Salesforce Support and I hate every single minute of it. I work 10hrs a day from 10pm to 8am, and just earlier I worked from 10pm to 10am. I would be so much happier if it was a day shift.
@@dvdkliu the work is not so tough when you have colleagues that support and help you, but I cannot handle the work schedule. It has affected me physically and mentally so I'm actually quitting today because I cannot go through another day having mental breakdown because I'm just so tired. I barely get sleep in the morning.

Loved this video and it seems I am a mix of red and blues after only being in the salesforce world for just over 1 year
David. In my view, those were the good old days in 2010 where we used to hire Admins and Devs with 80-100k by knowing few workflow rules and some apex triggers, but now we are ready to pay 150+ but need someone knowing everything as we don't want someone to write tons of workflows and bunch of process builder just bcz they only know admin work and they can exploit the features which will make things messy. My point to new engineers is make use of Trailhead and try to learn all alternatives when you enter into job market: Low-level knowledge: Workflows, Formula, Rollups, Process builders, Flows, Triggers, Queuable, Batchable, Schedulable, Aura and High Level - LWC, Integrations, CPQ/Billing, Territories, OAuth, Handling large data, most importantly which one to use when..and again everything is in Trailhead, thus hit the bulls eye. Again congrats to the awesome work you are doing by giving back knowledge to the community!!

I actually like Excel. I know most developers crap on it but it has its uses. For me, it's faster and easier to ship than some alternatives like Jupyter notebooks or Python executable.
What if someone study Salesforce Fundamentals, Apex Coding (learned from your course, it was Awesome!!) puts time and dedication towards learning Salesforce for at least 1.5 years and at the time of interview the interviewer says we'll look your Salesforce skills when you'll join us, first write that Java Code.

Hi David! I'm currently a Salesforce dev with 2 years of experience, but I'm thinking about switching to a more general stack, like Java, Spring and Angular. Which do you think would be better in the long run? Despite you being a Salesforce professional, I really appreciate your honesty haha
I'm assuming you're relatively young and sharp enough to pick up any tech stack. Given that, I'd say go general (something more modern than Java / Spring though). The exception is if you want to be closer to the business than the tech, in which case I'd say stick to the Salesforce path. Good luck!
I second David's viewpoints. I'm a Java dev having dipped my toe into SF and after a few months now, I left the SF world going back to traditional development.
A reddit user described it as "SF Admin clickwork development physically hurts". In SF you do as much as you can the admin click configuration route then write a bit of code on top of it. For me it was way too much of this kind of declarative propramming. I very soon missed the freedom and options I had whithin the other tech stacks. I missed using my brain for logic and design rather than using it for learning click routes by heart. Hunting certs felt like being back at uni, and I needed to learn stuff that's not going to be supported any more in the upcoming months (workflows, Process Builder). The amount of "what were they thinking?" + palmfacings I had in that short amount of Admin practice was immense.
Transitioning from Java etc. to SF might be a different experience than getting into SF without having tech background.
If I could go back in time, I wouldn't listen to all the hype out there but
a) get a free Trailhead account
b) take your time and try a few badges and a few Admin scoped Superbadges
c) imagine that all those details will be part of your cert exam in Admin certs, Platform developer certs and part of your daily work routine as a SF dev.
If I'd still like it I'd give it a try. Tech job profiles are in high demand and probing different tech stacks in your early career isn't going to hurt you (on the contrary: you will gain insights and experience that will support your future career steps).
Having a general stack as a foundation leaves you with more options since you are equipped with skills and tools that are applicable in both the SF and non SF world. Having SF only skills and then going into general dev roles leaves you without knowing about for example databases, DB configuration, migration and design, how to choose and connect all those tools, which framework to use and why etc.
As a SF dev you get used to the out of the box functionality. I had the impression that SF devs have an "I only have to use it I don't need to understand it" attitude.
Best practices as SW developer were rarely to bee seen in the SF world although it is preached by APEX hours. No clean code, no TDD, test asserts like assert(1, 1) just to get the code coverage because nobody in SF knows how to write maintainable code. A Senior SF dev recently told me "SFDX CLI has only been on the market for 4-5 years so nobody really knows the CLI characteristics of that tool yet" and I was like "since 5 years already?". I used it as a CLI with flags and extended outputs and not as a CTRL + SHIFT + P clicky thing.

Writing LWC's was the most fun part for me in the SF world, it felt pretty much like a traditional FE Framework using JavaScript.
Working in SF left me hungry and thirsty for tech and I now am able to fully enjoy it again.

@@montecrucis7247 Thank you for the comment. I agree with you, I think if you wanna improve your software engineering skills, Salesforce is not the correct path to follow. The advantage is that it's closer to the business, like David said.
@@IoriBernstein This is also one of the main reasons SF development sucked for me: the sales attitude/mindset leaked into the engineering culture. Profit over quality agility and sustainability. Delivering shitty code with tons of technical debt seemed to be OK as long as the customer is stuck with using Salesforce. And once you've invested into something you rather stick to it than changing over to an alternative.
This money-focused attitude is also one of the main motivators of traditional devs changing to SF dev careers (and being happy with it).

I'm really antisocial too (it may not seem like it but I work really hard to break it) and development is perfect for that! Especially at larger companies. If you're a very talented programmer though and get antisocial it'd be better to go into general backend coding

Before, I've worked in a bpo for 1yr and I hardly spoke to anyone for the entire year except a few that I'm close to. And my manager was fan of listening to my voice atleast once in his lifetime. @@bang.marcel0 I'd agree with David that Salesforce admin is good, but he's also right in that there are very few jobs for admin specifically (although they are out there since I can imagine many organizations don't need much more than custom objects, fields, and the like).
You'll still be working with people and helping them with their specific problems though. And I'd say a good understanding of logic would be a great head-start in the field (as I can imagine, for example, admins would still touch Salesforce flows which would end up driving a lot of custom business processes).

E commerce on Salesforce is pretty niche right now. I would evaluate where SAP is in this space and choose accordingly. The more mature SAP is the less likely I would personally invest in it

Dude, you are the man, but this kills me every time you say it lol. Excel and Salesforce are entirely different *experiences* even if at the *database* level they operate in a similar way. I absolutely despise doing anything in Excel, and I absolutely love working on Salesforce, in every capacity. I literally look for excuses to build something in a DE that I'll actually use for personal reasons. To imply that it's the same as using Excel is a major oversimplification of the role that UI and UX design play in one's overall experience of software. Maybe it seems the same as Excel from the perspective of someone whose primary job is programmatic dev? Certainly not the case for any other Salesforce role. That aside, enjoyed your intro to Apex course. You should do one on LWC :)
