  • For the first time ever, take a video tour of the award-winning Robotics & Mechanisms Laboratory (RoMeLa), led by its director Dr. Dennis Hong. Meet a variety of robots that play soccer, climb walls and even perform the 8-Clap.

    Since there appears to be some kind of relationship between Tesla (Tesla bot) and RoMeLa I'm wondering if it's time to update this channel?

    feels like Boston Dynamics solved these problems years ago. is there a reason they're not sharing findings? is the robotics world that much of a competition?

    • @fdavpach
      @fdavpach 4 года назад +1

      It is, Boston Dynamics don't share their findings, they get patents for their findings and try to make profit with it like almost every other robot researcher, you don't just share all the things what you have find because other will take it and make profit with it without asking or giving credit for something, all the companies try to make that, and not only the robotics world it's like that, all the profitable things are like that, but you may think "just go to the patents and give credit to the developer" but many companies only put on the patent half the details so they can have the rights of their creation but others can't get the full information or design and they keep it like "corporation secrets" so yeah, only after years you know how really something is made that's why like 4K tvs when they just come out they were pretty expensive, after a couple of years when other companies figured out the technology then the prices drop, same for robotics and everything else

    I Keep asking myself why people are trying to make a robot that will perform basically every profession that there is and take our jobs and on top of that lets make it smarter than us and give it the ability to learn. What will we do? Watch them do our work and sit there and be lazy while it mows your lawn and makes you lunch? People are going to have way too much time on their hands and there is going to be WAY too many people with NOTHING to do. This will never work in the world we live in. Depends who you ask, who the bad guy is. If you ask the Taliban who the bad guy is, its us. If you ask us, its them. How is an AI going to determine whos in the wrong?

    • @PontiacBandit
      @PontiacBandit 2 года назад +3

      Well, robotics is not meant to take jobs away from individuals. It is meant to make the job easier and safer for them. That is the one misconception that everyone has about robotics. It is seen as a threat, but really it should be seen as a plus. As far as watching them do your work and being lazy - that is now a human decision to become lazy. If you choose to be lazy and do nothing, then you will accomplish nothing. The robot does not make a person lazy, the individual CHOOSES to be that way. Now, AI... yeah I am not onboard with that concept of full AI. A dumb version of AI does have its perks, like machine learning, BUT we should not put our trust in true AI. That is going into deep waters. Especially if we are unable to control it. I hope that helps some of your uncertainties.

      @@PontiacBandit that is completely not true! i live in Humboldt county California and all the mills around here that used to employ thousands are now mostly automated. The old Palco mill in scotia which is now owned by california redwood company now takes a total of three people to run the whole mill when it used to be close to 100. The town of scotia california was one of the last company owned towns in the united states. You couldnt rent or buy a house there if you werent associated with palco. So basically the mill employed a whole town worth of people. Just recently scotia opened up to the public and anyone can now buy or rent a home there. This was directly caused by hiring robots instead of humans...I am a carpenter and i just recently saw a drone that could nail roofing shingles. yeah it might be safer but not being safe is why carpentry pays very well. If it was safe and you had no risks it would pay minimum wage and would be like working at mcdonalds. If robots make our jobs easier and safer then there will be no reason for any kind of special training or schooling because at that point the robot has all the knowledge, kinda like cell phones. i used to know everyones phone number by heart and now i know none because my phone has them....has the knowledge and i am just there to push the buttons. How many times have you wished to speak to a real person when talking to an automated phone call.
