Hi Mickayla. Karen here. I had an idea of something I'd like to see on a RUclips episode. You named all your chickens and you talk about their personalities on She said homestead as well as on here. I would like to see you highlight each chicken, hear a little bit about them and their temperament. Anything about their eggs or special features. And maybe why you named each one what you named them. Add the ducks to that as well. I'm enjoying She said homestead but I miss Calico Cow Acres videos.
I've always made mine using 6 pickets. Higher is nice but even doing a lasagna type filling the soil is the most expensive part. Keeping it to 2 boards high works fine if you break up the dirt under them. I dont cut the dog ears off at all, or seal them. They look fine and still last a long time. I watch my fb marketplace and had my husband go with me and help me disassemble a ouside play gym made of cedar a few years ago that a lady needed hauled off. I have used those wood pieces for SO MANY projects but especially the corners and stabilizing pieces i put midway to help stabilize the 2 long boards. You dont need that wood across the center at all. You could cut two 12-15 in pieces and screw thrm vertically and it will hold the 3 boards stable. Your way takes up planting room and you are using more wood so its more expensive. My beds cost me $18 each to make. Oh and the play equipment......I was able to list the slide, swings and see saw swing and made $100. I am STILL using that wood up 7 yrs later! Just a suggestion. You will reconfigure your garden numerous times so dont spend more than necessary.
Try double digging a bed ala John Jeavons. I did that in TX and grew amazing carrots and other things. I was on a sandy acid soil and filled the bottom of the bed with compost and topped with worm castings. That all helped hold onto moisture that would otherwise run through. I'd do the same thing on clay because it will break up the clay and give it some open pore space for drainage and loosen it up
love that you're finally making raised beds, hopefully you'll eventually have more, gardening is hard work & you want to make it easier as you get older keep an eye out for old barrels & tanks of various sizes to use as raised beds great work on the build of raised beds fill it with what ever you have available, i love the way 'self sufficient me' fills his raised beds, less expensive when it comes to putting soil & compost on the top well done & be sure to mix your planting up with herbs & flowers, it brings in the bugs thanx for sharing
Great idea I was looking too doing raised beds, one was using lumber and galvanized roof panels or just lumber. The roof panels were going to be cheaper, but the galvanized panels worried me. I was going to use 2x4 and 2x6's then saw yours. I'm going to modify as being north and east of you our soil sucks LOL, I'm going to extend double the length. This will be our first year of a garden so wish us luck. Keep up the great work, I'll start on the raised beds as soon as I'm done with my second chicken tractor.
Totally understand your frustration with Lowe's. My experience using them for window replacement has been a year long saga of ineptitude and ridiculousness. I find myself driving the extra miles to Home Depot now when I need things. Love what you two are doing and excited to be able to watch your progress and especially to enjoy the beautiful eggs.
I like the openness and honesty in regard to knowing that they won't last as long as a beefier cedar bed. You have to do what you have to do to make it work. I believe that you should have placed the larger chunks of wood on the bottom. Probably going to be some air pockets in it with the current layering technique you used. Good luck.
I built raised beds about 14 yrs ago, used 1x8x8s, cut in half so each bed 4’ square.got lucky and got a bunch of hinged metal corner brackets. My point they last about 7 yrs if there is at least an inch between. Yes it’s time to start replacing some this year for the second time.
You could step up to 2x6 instead of the fencing boards (1x6) for a little more $ and they will last longer but as you said that’s what’s working for yall right now 👍
LOL at first I glanced at this notification and thought it was referring to me and I was like I am NOT his helper 😂😂😂 but now I realize you’re talking about marmalade the chicken🤣 she’s most definitely the foreman!
I have done them raised beds and still have one designated for my garlic. I’m doing pretty good with carrots, but I need to make a designated bed just for carrots as well. 🥕
I just finished my own raised beds last week, also sealed with tung oil! I used a different brand, but I think I will use the brand y'all used in the future. I like that they sell the tung oil and solvent already mixed together.
hey, look! at 6:30 there is a Red Wyandotte chicken. (wind in-an-out of the house and dot on the floor). helping make compost outta the sawdust. love ❤ you an Taylor. Be Blessed.
My neighbor and I made garden boxes with 2x4s and cedar pickets and they have held up great! Some of the boards warped, but they still work great! It's been about 5 years now, and they're still going strong! No rot yet. We do live in Montana, so we are not super humid. We didn't seal them or anything.
This is great to hear! Thank you for sharing. We made the ones at our last house but we moved so we didn’t get to see how long they’d last. We have high humidity and lots of rain here, so we oiled them & are hoping they last a while :)
New here, enjoy your content. Also a Michigan native🎉 May I suggest you check out Jess over at Roots n refuge she has a great tips for sowing carrots 🥕 Best of growing this planting season 🌱
Good question! We’re not ready to plant things in them yet, so having them covered prevents weeds from being able to grow & it keeps the moisture in the soil so it doesn’t get all dried out before we can plant in them & mulch them with straw or woodchips. 😊

I also loved the "Hi Ben" in the vid before this one. Sooo funny! 😊❤❤
Our gardens are always a work in progress. The beds look beautiful and before you know it they’ll be overflowing with delicious food!
Your hair weave is beautiful!!❤❤❤
thank you! :)

I love the bloopers!❤❤😊😂🎉
thanks! so glad you like them
We just did the same type of beds with the pickets. Lookin’ forward to seeing how they work out for you. The bloopers were great 😂❤
We've got carrots sprouting in them now! Yay! I hope yours work well for you, too. Glad you enjoyed the bloopers :)

Glad to see you two working on this project. Great job. Excited for spring.
Thank you! We’re excited, too!😁
Love Taylor's helper. Is she the site foreman or the OSHA inspector? 😂😂😂
LOL at first I glanced at this notification and thought it was referring to me and I was like I am NOT his helper 😂😂😂 but now I realize you’re talking about marmalade the chicken🤣 she’s most definitely the foreman!

@@calicocowacres I'm sure I will!
Ya did good
Thank you!😊
Oils smelling like nuts, is totally fine.
Nuts smell like oils on the other hand, no bueno.😅
Edit: i knew it, i knew Taylor was a fellow metalhead. 🤟
LOL this is spot on 😂😂😂
I just discovered ya'll. What happened to the stray dog Sully?
Hey! Welcome :) we found his home & returned him to his owners!
Just curious why you have the other beds covered.
Good question! We’re not ready to plant things in them yet, so having them covered prevents weeds from being able to grow & it keeps the moisture in the soil so it doesn’t get all dried out before we can plant in them & mulch them with straw or woodchips. 😊
