Fun Fact: Most people think White Christmas was released as part of the movie "White Christmas" in 1954 but in fact the song came out in the 1942 movie "Holiday Inn" which is ACTUALLY the video clip you're watching. The premise of the movie is that Bing's character wanted to retire from Vaudeville performing with his partner played by Fred Astaire and open an inn where they would put on seasonal small performances. This clip is him teaching her the song so they could prep for a Christmas show. That actress is the late Marjorie Reynolds but that's not her voice. The real singer is Martha Mears and she was a contralto. She actually did the singing for a lot of famous actresses.

and I hear him constantly at work this Holiday season. And from what I learned from my father about back in the day: Bing has an incredible voice and screen persona, but was a total controlling asshole. Beat his wife and kids and emotionally abused them way before those things were disclosed. Esp for a big Hollywood star. His son committed suicide as a young adult. The WWII years were incredibly hard for Americans, and his songs helped them thru it. Imagine the stress of your loved one being overseas fighting a war for 4+ years, maybe coming home injured, and being away over the holidays too. Or husbands, fathers, sons and daughters coming home in coffins. Like Covid times 100! Terrible and grief filled times and his music did soothe that a bit. So good and bad in one person.

@@sarahdee374Starting with the quotation marks is an interview with Nathan Crosby
"Crosby: Well the four half brothers have been deceased for quite a while. I don't want to be rebutting a book that my half-brother wrote 35 years ago but the book that Gary Crosby wrote about my dad gave a little controversy to an otherwise legendary figure who had no negative publicity in a 50 year entertainment career.
If one were to read my half-brother's book it was more of a self-critique, a lot about his alcoholism. The focus of the controversy about dad was on corporal punishment which every single parent from every single upstanding family from the 1930s all through the 1970s. It wasn't until the 1980s that corporal punishment started to get restricted or reduced. To this day it's still emphasized in the Catholic church as a reasonable way of raising children. In that time when those boys were growing up, corporal punishment was in the mainstream.
Gary was there when dad was sick. We got more time with Gary. And when Gary wrote the book in 1981 or 82 it was only two or three years after Joan Crawford's daughter wrote "Mommie Dearest," so let's say it became a successful business model to knock your parent in a book and you could get an audience. I chalk it up to that.
Dad was an incredible parent. It really burned a bridge in Gary's relationship with the other three boys after that book was written. They were crushed that Gary wrote that book."
Apparently, the older boys got into a lot of trouble when they became young men. So Bing put their inheritance in a trust fund until they were 65 and the trust fund their mom set up for them went broke during some oil market trouble.
I could not find evidence of the rumor I had heard about him recanting on his death bed however.

"Do You Hear What I Hear" was a hit for Bing Crosby. It also doubles as an anti-war song. It was written as a plea to end the Cuban Missile Crisis. His duet with David Bowie, "Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy" was amazing, especially since they really didn't get along during filming.

Another iconic Christmas song sung by the original artist is the original "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" by Judy Garland. I'd put that on your list too! ❤️For Bing, "Do You Hear What I Hear" and his "Drummer Boy" duet with David Bowie are the other two musts.
I'm sure other people have mentioned that this song was written for the movie "Holiday Inn", which is what this performance is from (i.e. this is the original and still the best 😊). This particular video, also, cut in a little bit more footage from other "Holiday Inn" scenes as visuals to go along with the song which was a really cute idea. To answer your question about the female singer, the voice you're hearing is a singer named Martha Mears but, she wasn't an actor, so the actress you're actually seeing in this video (and the movie) is a lovely actress/dancer named Marjorie Reynolds. Martha Mears was mostly a radio star but, she made a secondary career out of dubbing actresses for movies. "White Christmas" is easily her most famous song but, "Long Ago and Far Away" is probably next.

This song was HUGE. It was first performed by Bing in December 1941 on a live radio broadcast, just after the United States entered World War II, so it took on extra meaning for servicemen and the families who were left at home. In fact, the original recording of the song (in 1942, I believe) was so popular, the metal pressing of the record (from which they made vinyl records to be distributed to the public) actually _wore_ _out_ from overuse! Bing re-recorded the song in 1947, and that's the version that most people since then have heard, as they no longer have the ability to make copies from the original recording.

The funky thing about Bing is, that while he may be pigeonholed into the “crooner” vibe, and singers like Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Vic Damone, Perry Como et al followed directly in his footsteps, his original love was jazz. If you dig deep into his discography from the 20s-30s, you will find a distinctively more swingy jazzy sound.

Bing's other can't miss Christmas song is the immortal, "I'll Be Home for Christmas" which is arguably the greatest Christmas song of all time, as it reflected the thoughts of an entire generation during WW2. While you continue your Christmas classics, don't forget too also have some fun with songs like, The Dropkick Murphy's "The Season's Apon Us", Weird Al's original "The Night Santa Went Crazy". Jeff Dunham's "Jingle Bombs" and Sherwin Linton's brilliant "Santa Got a DWI".

Bing Crosby is THE KING of Crooners.
The film clip you watched was from the 1942 movie HOLIDAY INN. The actress in that scene is Marjorie Reynolds.
As awesome as this is, it ISN'T Bing's best version of the song. He is the artist who introduced this Irving Berlin tune to the world, however.
BTW, Marjorie's singing voice is dubbed by Martha Mears.

Bing was also one of the stars of 'High Society' which included two of your other favourites; Frank Sinatra and Louis Armstrong. Not a Christmas film but still one of the best musicals ever and Bing does two duets with each of them! You'll love it.

The interesting thing about this song is that it was originally written for the movie "Holiday Inn" in 1942. Bing Crosby sings the song with Martha Mears whose voice was dubbed in for his costar Marjorie Reynolds. Fun Fact is that the attack on Pearl Harbor (the 80th anniversary of which was yesterday) came in the middle of filming Holiday Inn which is one the reasons the song for the 4th of July was so Patriotic. The song won the Academy Award for Best Original Song. The movie "White Christmas" which many people associate with the song did not come out until almost a decade later in 1954. You are right. It is the absolute best rendition of the song.

Almost all of the famous crooners weren't just great singers. They were some of the biggest movie stars during the 30's, 40's, 50's and 60's. They filled the big screen with musicals, a lot of them Christmas movies. Bing Crosby starred in several of them, winning an Academy Award for playing a priest in "Going My Way", a true Christmas classic. There's one song in that movie that has stuck in my mind after seeing the movie so long ago. It's a beautiful Irish lullaby that you really should share with Luca to see how he likes it. There aren't many crooner lullabies out there. This one is titled "Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral" and you'll love it.

The word 'crooner' was first used to describe Bing Crosby. One special thing about Bing - the microphone was invented in 1925, before that people sang into bell shaped horns that recorded by scratching a needle into a platter from the volume of the singer and band. Crosby was about the first to successful artist to sing in a soft singing voice.

You might be surprised how many Christmas Classics were introduced in old movie musicals. Remember at this time there was no television only radio records and movies. I recommend the classic “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” first (and best) sung by Judy Garland in the 1944 musical Meet Me in St Louis. You guys would remember Judy Garland as Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz which was made several years earlier. Judy Garland was a wonderful entertainer you might look at some of her non Christmas stuff for a female Friday

Martha Mears overdubbed the female vocal in the duet in Holiday Inn.

Bing is the OG! Now don’t miss the “King of Cool” Dean Martin doing “Let it Snow” and also Andy Williams doing “Its the most wonderful time of the year”
