The correct spelling of the word is “Tonight,” as in - this night. The spelling “tonite” is more of a recent slang, a colloquialism, originally popularized as a shortened version to save space in printed media.

White Christmas is without a doubt one of my favourite ever christmas movies. Also fun fact the part where Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye are doing the sisters routine it was entirely improv, they where messing around on set and the director found it hilarious so he kept it in so the laughing is entirely real.

The original introduction to the White Christmas song was 12 years earlier in the 1942 Movie "Holiday Inn with Bing Crosby, Marjorie Reynolds and Fred Astaire. Bing and Marjorie sang it together at the piano first. Irving Berlin wrote it for that movie. I have the original sheet music....it has an introduction that nobody sings anymore. "The sun is shining , the grass is green, the orange and the palm trees sway. There's never been such a day, in Beverly Hills L.A. But it's December the 24th....and I am longing to be up north...." then they go into the main part of the song everyone songs. Fred Astaire was hilarious in that movie playing drunk and trying to dance at a party.

I grew up in the 60s loving this and other classic Christmas movies including Holiday Inn. But I can't recommend Holiday Inn because of (1) the blackface routine for 'Abraham', and (2) the character of Mamie - she is so kind and smart but her dialog is so stereotyped; if only they had allowed the actress to portray her as a human being instead of a safe (for a white auduence) stereotype.
How ironic that the 4th of July song has the lyric: 'that all God's children shall be free' if only the producers, director, and writers had realized the concept of Mamie was hurtful.

It was especially true from the vaudeville era through the glory years of the musical, but even into the early '70s it was encouraged for up and coming entertainers to make themselves a triple-threat acting/singing/dancing. Either that, or you better be able to ride a horse.

Exactly. So many 'reactors' use a movie to allow them to quip or mug but Madison is among those who truly react to a movie without making it about themselves. That's why I watch reaction videos; to relive a movie through fresh eyes. I watched Jurassic Park numerous times in the theatre and each time felt like the same as the audience was experiencing the movie for their first time. There's a lot to be said about experiencing things vicariously.

In the late 19th and into the middle of the 20th century, advertisers and businesses started shortening words to fit them on signage and packaging with larger letters. Quick became quik, doughnut became donut, drive-through became drive-thru, tonight/tonite, etc. It was seen as modern, advanced, and streamlined while non-standard and hip. Some of those spellings have actually become standard since then.

Hello and Merry Christmas Madison! "White Christmas", "It's a Wonderful Life", and "Miracle on 34th Street" and three movies that I try to watch every single year for their holiday awesomeness!
Bing Crosby is a fine actor and if you'd like, I can suggest a few of his finest films in a future comment for you to react to next year.
Edith Head (c. 1898-1981) is widely viewed as Hollywood's most successful costume designer, as well as one of its most colorful personalities. She was nominated for 35 Academy Awards, won eight, and designed the costumes for several hundred films. Intimately, she was known as "The Dress Doctor". I look forward to seeing any classic film with her name shining up in the credits. She was a legend like no other!
This film really should be seen in Blu-Ray to enhance and bring out the spectacular color schemes in all the routines. It should also be seen on wide-screen.
Now, about the word tonite…it kind of goes back to the 60s & 70s, where it became seen as ‘cool’ among the younger generation to spell words incorrectly - deliberately.
Things like teenage magazines, informal messages, pop songs, etc would use such versions as ‘luv’ for ‘love’; ‘’reely’ for ‘really’- and ‘tonite’ for ‘tonight’. It can also be written as so for advertising purposes, such as the word "donut" (which should correctly be doughnut). It makes the words easier to remember.
Note that these 'compacted' words are totally NOT CORRECT and should only be used in informal settings.
Danny Kaye is one of my top 3 favorite make comedians of all time with Jerry Lewis being the first and Lou Costello as the second. 💙
I'm so glad that you reacted to this film.
I want to wish you a wonderful Christmas and New Year's. I also wish you greater success in 2023 with anticipation of reaching 50K by the end of the year!
I enjoy you and your reactions very very much and look forward to them as they come out.
Stay well and be blessed all the days of your life. See you next year! 🤗😽💕🎄🥳 📽❤️

Tonite is a a show business advertising word only really used in the U.S. Lite is also used instead of Light. There was an explosive that was called Tonite used at the turn of the century, similar to dynamite. The expression was used as a play on words to describe an explosive fun show. Some ads would say something like Tonite come out for a dynamite show. The slang spelling helps to keep the visual rhyme.

I had no interest in this movie until I was treated to see the musical on stage at one of NJ's two biggest stages and I was sold. Heck, they made it snow in the theatre! The movie is a little different from the movie but after the show, I immediately purchased the original cast album on CD and the White Christmas movie on DVD. Since then, White Christmas is a December must-watch for me. I loved the Florida club setting, the train scenes and especially that wonderful Columbia Inn. There is definitely a ton of music in this that could be removed as it doesn't advance the story but the movie is extremely fun to watch. The ending with the general is extremely moving. I especially like the way his granddaughter looks at him in his old uniform. And Mary Wicks is always wonderful.
Back to the stage version, the audience first sees the show beyond the open barn doors, then it's snowing on the stage, then it actually snows onto the audience members. Outside of seeing a performance of The Nutcracker Suite at that very same theatre, White Christmas truly made it feel like Christmas.

BTW not sure if you knew who she was but Betty was played by Rosemary Clooney who was a huge singing star and the aunt of George Clooney. Hope the new year brings your novel much success!

If you would like to see Bing Crosby act, you should watch one of the movies in which he plays a catholic priest. "Going my Way" and my favorite "The Bells of St. Mary". He actually turned down the role because as a race horse breeder and gambler he didn't think he could or should play a priest. He then got a call from the pope, who asked him to reconsider. He took the part and did a great job.

Just so you know, "White Christmas" was not just a one-off for Bing's acting; he'd been doing films for years, a lot of them classics.
-several Catholic priest films ("The Bells of St Mary's", "Going My Way", "Top o' the Morning", etc)
-seven "Road" movies with Bob Hope ("The Road to Hong Kong", "The Road to Morocco", etc)
Bing had appeared in at least 27 films.
In musicals, you DON'T sing every line; that's opera. In a musical, people sing when the situation gets so full of emotion that they burst into song, but mostly the dialogue is normal speech.
By the way, Percy Helton played the train conductor in "White Christmas" as well as the drunken Santa Claus who gets fired in the 1947 "Miracle on 34th Street".
One of the male chorus dancers, the one most prominent in Betty's NYC single act, is George Chakiris, who played Bernardo (Maria's brother) in the 1961 "West Side Story".
Rosemary Clooney, who plays Betty, is George Clooney's aunt.
Hearing you go on about Edith Head's costuming, I had to wonder whether anyone has ever held a costume party where people were asked to come as their favorite movie character, especially a Christmas or New Year's Party dressed as a holiday-specific film character...

Hi Madison, I`m really glad you enjoyed this film, I still find it hard to believe so many younger people have not seen these Xmas classics. As mentioned by (David B), Bing was also well-known for his Series of Comedy films with Bob Hope. Danny Kaye also has a rich comedy film history starting in 1944. But perhaps you would like to explore his 1945 (Wonder Man), a musical/comedy alongside Vera Ellen, his "partner in crime" in this film. :)

Most young people are not interested in films/music from before they were born. In this case, White Christmas was made probably before her parents were born! If I didn't have older brothers and sisters I'm sure I wouldn't be aware of most the cultural things I'm aware of.

Not a Christmas movie, but I have to recommend High Society, a musical remake of The Philadelphia Story with Bing Crosby, Grace Kelly, Frank Sinatra, and Louis Armstrong. I believe it was Grace Kelly's last film before she became Princess Grace of Monaco.

Merry Christmas (belated) !!! Congratulations 🎊on whatever the news about your book is. I am in infrequent watcher, so I may not catch that announcement until sometime down the road, but I am excited for you.
“Tonight” is the proper spelling. “Tonite” is an abbreviated form usually used for messaging, posters, newspapers, etc. where the cost of each word, in labor and precious space was calculated by the letter, or "type", or more specifically, the NUMBER of letters required to state something clearly. So, "tonite" was used to save a couple letters worth of space. It allowed you to fit more words IN, and ON (newspapers and/or posters) media that had a finite amount of space to place your message. They are interchangeable today, but "'tonite" is not acceptable in any kind of formal writing.

The "tonite" spelling was part of a misguided attempt at spelling reform, which ignored the structure of English orthography.

    • @StevesFunhouse
      @StevesFunhouse Год назад

@@GarthKlein I believe I was QUITE specific about it's origins and reasons for. If you want to included it use in messaging and the like fine, but its origins had nothing to do with "a misguided attempt at spelling reform". That's like saying Ebonics was created for the same reason ... it wasn't !!!
Shortening words of all types was used for brevity and commonly on signs and posters to save space ... like using Xmas instead of Christmas. There was no attempt to change the language.

Wow Madison! You've dressed in the spirit of this movie. Red cape or something would have been even more so but probably a little too much. While I love this song it's intro in "holiday Inn" is my favorite version. Bing Crosby and Marjorie Reynolds. Twice in the movie outstanding. Check it out. I found out a while ago, that as disappointing as it was, that Martha Mears was the voice behind M Reynolds and from my hometown, born near Mexico and moved to Moberly Mo while in grade school graduated from my high school and JuCo, then MU and then got into singing professionally and dubbed lots af actresses. Apparently died in Versailles in 1986. You'd think that the schools would want that publicity but nooooo. Anyway, Danny Kaye, "Hans Cristian Andersen, court jester, a song is born, the kid from Brooklyn" are my favorites. George Clooney failed to get the singing gene from his father's family. Too bad, has to get by on his looks. Vera Ellen, wow. Love how she moves. Made a bunch movies to show us. Dean jagger started doing his movie thing in the 30s and worked regularly for decades. Mary Wickes "Emma" beautiful as wisecracking assistant throughout her career. Oh yeah, and Bing Crosby. My favorite bit is Bing and Danny as sisters. Thanks for watching this. Merry Christmas
