Movies with Mary is a Belgium reactor. It was priceless to see her reaction and you are right. She translated it. The girl basically said I don't need anything for Christmas as I just want to spend it with this lovely lady.
Of course she did tease the young actress because it was obvious she wasn't a natural Dutch speaker.

  • @johnnehrich9601

To the original audience watching this in '47, the scene with the little Dutch girl would have been far more poignant. "She just came over" would have been understood she was likely an orphan, the rest of her family slaughtered during the War, her homeland devastated, she coming to a strange new land with a new family and people not speaking her language.

    • @Caseytify

@@Caseytify And unrelated to this child being from Holland - "Saint Nicholas," as the Dutch pronounced it, was Sinnterklaas, which is where the name Santa Claus came from!
And the Germans had a tradition of the "Christ child" - not understood to be Jesus himself but an adult who stood in for the baby Jesus to give out toys. In German, this was Christkindl. Germanic settlers in Pennsylvania (Reformed, Mennonite, Lutheran, Moravian, etc.) were called Pennsylvania DUTCH (because at the time Germany was not united, so people from this area were called Deitsch (not the related name, Deutsch). These settlers pronounced legendary person in their dialect as "'Christ-kinkle," giving us Kris Kringle.

After long neglect, *Here's Love* has had something of a renaissance in recent years, with regional and local revivals now being presented under the movie's title. But my information only amplifies your main point. Out of all these versions on stage, screen, radio, and television -- even when you include the radio versions that feature members of the original cast -- the only version that really works, the only version that is magical, excellent, and timeless is the 1947 original.

The woman shopper who commented to the manager how wonderful Macy's new policy was Thelma Ritter, in her first role, uncredited. With her strong Brooklyn accent, she went on to epitomize the working class down-to-earth person who cut through the bs, in so many roles after this, most notably in Hitchcock's Rear Window.
Was this her real accent and her real personality, so she merely played herself each time, or did she play the role so well it seemed second-nature? I don't know but I do know I love seeing her in any movie.

The 1952 "Scrooge" (with Alistair Sim) and the Laurel & Hardy film "March Of The Wooden Soliders" are my only remaining Christmas traditions that you haven't hit yet! The film used actual footage of the 1946 Thanksgiving Parade, where Edmund Gwenn actually appeared as Santa on the float.Back in the 1980's I worked at Brooks Brothers on Madison Ave. at Christmastime for a few years. It was a very old-fashioned store largely unchanged since the 1940's. Those Christmases all felt like I was living in the world of Miracle on 34th St. (1947).

If you really think about it, that he was really Santa wouldn't really be a miracle as such. The title really refers (I believe) to the legendary feud at the time between Macy's and Gimbel's, the two biggest department stores in America. Each had their hallmark store on the same street, 34th, right across from each other. A popular saying at the time was "Would Macy's tell Gimbel's?" That this Santa could bring the two together was a sort of miracle in the eyes of the contemporary audiences.
Gimbel's went out of business in 1987 and this undercut this premise being used in the 1994 remake of this movie.

Another great reaction, Madison. I really appreciate your insight, the way you qualify your comments.
So far, you’ve reacted to two of my three favorite holiday movies. The only one missing now is The Bishop’s Wife with Carey Grant and Loretta Young.
Btw, you did a wonderful job with It’s a Wonderful Life👍🏼😊.

Madison, please, please, pretty please watch the original We’re no Angels 😇
YOU are the one to do it! Nobody knows this movie. It is one of my top favorite movies, let alone Christmas movie. It’s irreverent, cheeky, has a dark edge, funny, incredible script, incredibly talented acting. Humphrey Bogart is one of the leads! I’d be over the moon to watch you react to it! You will LOVE it!

I am so happy you are focusing on Christmas movies. There are so many great ones. Already suggested and among my favorites are Scrooge (1952, probably the best movie depiction of the Christmas Carol story), The Bishops Wife with Cary Grant and Christmas in Connecticut with Barbara Stanwyck (strong woman lead, she carries the whole movie). My suggestions are Noel (2004) with Susan Sarandon, Penelope Cruz, Paul Walker, Alan Akin and Robin Williams. It is hard to express how wonderful the music, acting and story are in this movie. My second recommendation is a 1966 made for TV movie A Christmas Memory staring Geraldine Page. It is an autobiographical Christmas story written and narrated by the famous author Truman Capote (best known for In Cold Blood and Breakfast at Tiffany's).

Love your reactions. It's great to see classics like this and It's a Wonderful Life. I've been watching your western reactions and I think you need to check out The Big Country. Gregory Peck, Charlton Heston and Burl Ives. It has everything you love about westerns, and it was the movie that set the standard for all of those things that is the epic western.

There is an attorney in NY who also works as a professional Santa. He begins growing a snowy beard in June. I suppose that he must look scruffy in the courtroom but
most people know about him. His office is around the corner from the World Trade Center and wanted to help the families affected by 9/11. His paralegal said that Mr. Friedman was fat enough and should give it a try. He began meeting the children of victims. He’s still doing it.

Black and White version is better

    • @johnnehrich9601
      @johnnehrich9601 Год назад

When they colorize these old black and white movies, they can't create the strong colors of a movie originally filmed in Technicolor, the colors remain rather mute. But I think they just make the movie more approachable by modern audiences. Once I'm into the story, I no longer pay much attention to whether it is original or colorized. But for a number of today's viewers, they feel they can't watch black-and-white, so colorizing it makes it accessible to a wider audience. And it is so easy to find either version available to watch, and these classics are so worth seeing again and again, so I don't find this a problem.

Is there actually a colorized version of this film? I've never seen it anywhere and this was a reaction to the black and white film.

@@CasualNerdReactions This was the first black-and-white movies to be colorized, in 1985, resulting in controversy. Bet there is at least a newer, better colorization attempt.
WOW - I did a little searching and found there is a colorized version, said to be the 1947 movie, only 46 minutes long - but with DIFFERENT actors:
Miracle On 34th Street (1947 In Color) Full Christmas Movie
I did a brief look at it. Seems to be based on the identical script.

The colorization is terrible - Santa at several points has a corpse-green/gray face! (Evolution of the Grinch?)

Madison, You should try "We're No Angels" for a Christmas movie. It's not your average Christmas Movie. If you do, make sure you watch the 1955 version with Humphrey Bogart, Peter Ustinov, . Alot of ., Aldo Ray, Basil Rathbone, and Leo G. Carrol.

Plays a fake Santa with Bob Hope in "lemon drop kid" a Damon Runyon story. Whoa whoa whoa! Did you just say the opposite of what this movie is all about? Mmm mmm mmm. Glad you got here though. There are no supernatural acts in this movie. Everything that happens can be explained reasonably and scientifically. Even the house at the end with a cane could very plausibly be a rare coincidence.
