@@jamessimmons1486 He was no Gene Kelly or Fred Astaire, but was considered a competent dancer as were a lot of entertainers in those days. It was considered part of the job and most took lessons to be able to do so.
Bob Hope put on a lot of Christmas shows for the military personnel who were serving overseas during the Christmas season. One person from my unit got to go to one of his shows in '69.
A beautiful classic. When we were in Nam & unable to get home or even communicate with anyone in the states, playing this sone &" I'll be home for Christmas " would give us a few minutes of hope, but there wasn't 1 dry eye in my platoon. Thanks
Many of our best Christmas songs came from the World War 2 years (yes I know many are very old from hundreds of years ago). The Christmas Song (Chestnuts roasting on an open fire) is actually for soldiers wishing to be home even if only in their dreams. White Christmas was originally in the movie Holiday Inn and followed a few years later in the movie White Christmas.
For the first half of the 20th century, Bing Crosby was the most popular singer in the world. There are multiple versions released of this song-the original is from 1942-one from 1954 and this version is from 1962 which is the most heard and most popular version today.
Song was introduced by Bing in the movie "Holiday Inn" 1942 so popular that another movie with Bing was done called "White Christmas" 1954 Merry Christmas!!!
Thanks for this reaction. Bing Crosby was an amazing music and movie star for decades. "White Christmas" was composed (music and lyrics) by Irving Berlin, a Jewish American songwriter born in Imperial Russia in 1888. He came to the USA with his family when he was 5, and lived to age 101, dying in 1989. He wrote roughly 1,500 songs (including "Puttin' on the Ritz"), of which 8 were nominated for Academy Awards, and 25 made it to the top of the hit parade.
He also wrote God Bless America. Growing up in abject poverty in lower Manhattan, he delivered papers to help feed his family. On one occasion he stopped at a pier to watch a boat come in. He leaned over and the money he had made from that day fell into the Hudson. He jumped in to fetch it and almost drowned in the rough water. Some passers-by pulled him out.
The version most often heard today on the radio during the Christmas season is the 1947 re-recording. The 1942 master was damaged due to frequent use. Crosby re-recorded the track on March 19, 1947, accompanied again by the Trotter Orchestra and the Darby Singers, with every effort made to reproduce the original recording session. The re-recording is recognizable by the addition of flutes and celesta in the beginning.
You might like to look for Bing Crosby and David Bowie in a xmas setting singing "" Little drummer boy "" .....just magical......sadly Bing died just a few months after the recording ..☹️
NOBODY sings this like Bing. The movie "White Christmas" is also fun to watch this time of year. This song was written in 1942 by Irving Berlin for the movie "Holiday Inn". Then they made the movie "White Christmas". Bob Hope did a lot of entertaining of the troops until he retired. I'm not sure about Bing. I'm sure someone will know.
Bing is known for much more than his Xmas songs, but via people now, maybe so. He was a movie star also with many movies, and a crooner who many preferred over Frank Sinatra.
You know that 'White Christmas' is one of the very best Christmas songs of all time when it can even survive Michael Bolton screeching it out, lol. Coming from middle Tennessee where we've only had 1 real (barely a dusting doesn't count) White Christmas in the last 30 years... Dreaming of snow on Christmas is the best we can hope for, so this song holds a special place in my heart! For what its worth, its going to be 60 degrees and rainy this year. Sigh...
I’ll swap you! It’s going to be 31 degrees Celsius here and storming and probably humid! Yuk! I would taker cooler weather any day! lol! MerryChristmas! Peace and Blessings to you and yours from Australia.
@@wendyryder2708 Merry Christmas to you as well! We had a few isolated tornadoes around the area last week, so I can understand the stormy weather stinking at Christmas. You're right though... Either way, I've spent so much time with you the last few months that I feel like we're old friends. I hope you have a terrific Christmas and a peaceful, prosperous 2024!
It’s not officially Christmas unless you listen to Bing Crosby sing White Christmas at least once/day starting right after Thanksgiving dinner. You both might enjoy doing a movie watch of the 1942 Bing Crosby/Bob Hope classic The Road to Morocco. There’s singing, dancing, comedy, and Dorothy Lamour! 👀👀
Bing started out singing in a much higher range but as his voice matured (and probably with the pipe smoke) it dropped to a lower range that we more associate with his songs.
Not just the pipe smoke. He almost lost his career early on due to booze. So he switched to weed. And he didn't start as a crooner. He was a jazz singer.
The song was a hit first in 1942. That was the first Christmas with America at war. The sentiment was perfect for this bleak time. At that time the country was concerned and good news was rare and there was the desire for positive feelings.imagine your son/husband in the Pacific, North Africa, or a Southern Us army base for basic training…. I love the movie White Christmas. A It stars Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney, Vera Ellen with Dean Jagger. Danny Kaye is primarily a comic. However, he can sing, dance in this movie. Also in his career he has done drama, and a music conductor. Rosemary Clooney is George Clooney's aunt. Vera Ellen was an accomplished dancer, in the movie her singing parts were dubbed in. White Christmas movie takes me through a range of emotions.
💫For my money, the most charming of Crosby's recordings of this song is the original, from the 1942 movie "Holiday Inn". It's a duet, but the female vocals are actually dubbed by someone other than the actress in the movie. Anyway, the film segment where they sing this perennial favorite is just as nice as the audio and the musical performance is just great, rich without being over-produced. A lot of people now only know Bing Crosby from numbers like this or "Silver Bells", but just about every popular singer in the 40s through the 60s did Xmas albums. It wasn't really a Crosby specialty.
