This is the quintessential version. Irving Berlin wrote this song in 1941 for the musical film "Holiday Inn" and Bing Crosby brought it to worldwide fame. Sales of Bing Crosby's original version is about 50 million copies. Many other artists have covered this song over the decades and all of their sales combined were 50 million. So this song has total sales of 100 million. The 1st public performance of this song was in 1941, just a few weeks after the "Bombing Of Pearl Harbor".

The "pay off in eggs" line was not slang. This movie "Holiday Inn" is about a guy in show business who is sick of the rat race in the city. He thinks a life in the country will be peaceful, so he purchases a farm and tries to run it. He discovers farming is much harder work than show business, so he decides to convert his farm to a nightclub/hotel open only on holidays. The young woman coincidentally is struggling to get into show business, and she doesn't care what she is paid as long as he hires her.

"pay off" is not a current or standard word usage, though, making it effectively slang. At the very least, it's dated language, which may well be called "slang" in the slang of MrL. ;) We use the past-tense "paid off" today, but that refers to being selling out or being bribed to go against ethical standards. Here, she uses it to simply refer to a paycheck. Also, the idea that poultry products would represent paltry (heh, get it?) remuneration is also out-of-date. Eggs are expensive!

White Christmas sung by Crosby is the most popular Christmas song of all time. Bing, the crooner, was the Michael Jackson of his day, during the era of the Big Bands. I grew up in Manhattan and for the whole month of December you could hear Bing singing from PA speakers out of every store you walked by. I can’t imagine anyone never hearing him before? It’s funny that the three most popular Xmas songs were written by Jewish composers, Irving Berlin being the most prolific.

Ah, 'Holiday Inn', a movie I have watched several times a years ever since I first got a VHS copy. Upgraded to DVD and then to blu ray. One of the best Christmas movies ever. And the character of Mamie is the most honest, sincere, truthful, and morally straight one in the entire movie. She doesn't have any angle or agenda. Everyone else has a angle or agenda. Bing's character, Fred's character, the two female leads, the manager, and even the Inn employee, they all have something they are trying to gain by sneaking around and working things behind the others' backs.
Mamie is not treated as a servant, she is treated by Bing with respect and dignity, and she has the guts to snap Bing's character out of his funk and motivate him to fight for the woman he loves. Very, very strong character. I don't know what else she was in, but she was always my favorite 'Holiday Inn' character.

The interesting thing about this song is that it was originally written for the movie "Holiday Inn" in 1942. Bing Crosby sings the song with Martha Mears whose voice was dubbed in for his costar Marjorie Reynolds. Fun Fact is that the attack on Pearl Harbor (the 80th anniversary was yesterday) came in the middle of filming Holiday In which is one the reasons the song for the 4th of July was so patriotic. The song won the Academy Award for Best Original Song. The movie "White Christmas" - the video clip that you used - which many people associate with the song did not come out until almost a decade later in 1954.

Nice reaction! Bing Crosby is the crooner who inspired so many who followed after him. He had a long and distinguished career as a top crooner, radio and movie star. From the 20s through the 70s. Your comment about him not looking like he would have the voice that he did is spot on. His offhand, folksy style and joking manner did not give a true indication of that amazing voice . Stars who worked with him said he barely rehearsed, just basically came in and sang those wonderful songs. He did a series of funny Road movies with Bob Hope that still make me laugh to this day. Crosby also did some serious dramatic roles, he could do it all. (Okay, he wasn't much of a dancer.) Once you've heard Bing Crosby singing White Christmas, Nat King Cole singing The Christmas Song and Judy Garland singing Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, that's about as good as it gets. Happy holidays to you and all your loved ones! Love that you react to so many varied artists and genres.

This was the introduction of this classic. The egg line refers to it taking place on a farm, , and the girl (played by Marjorie Reynolds) just wanting a chance to perform and show her talent and being willing to work for food instead of cash). The song, written by Irving Berlin, won the Academy Award for best song. Bing's recording of White Christmas is the highest-selling record ever.

Bing was the first "crooner" in fact I think the word was invented for him. He introduced this song in the movie, "Holiday Inn (1942)." He reprised it in the movie "White Christmas (1954)." BTW, "pay in eggs" was simply a reference to the fact that the Inn was also a farm in the country. He won an Oscar for the starring role in "Going My Way" (1944). He's also famous for the "Road" movies he made with Bob Hope.

This is from the Movie "Holiday Inn" The woman is Marjorie Reynolds. This is the song that fooled everyone. The hit song was suppose to be "Be Careful, It's My Heart" . Later the movie White Christmas was conceived to capitalize on the hit song and filmed in color. I've always preferred this one to white christamas.

Back in the 40s and 50s it was fairly common for people to pay their tab with eggs, literally. My mother used to buy postage stamps with an egg or two taken from her hen! She was a sharecropper in Virginia. I'd guess in Manhattan, most people wouldn't have had chickens! Rural folk had to barter more than city folk. Excellent reaction, btw!

Bing Crosby was a crooner and all round entertainer, back then lots of people paid in food not money, cause they could grow or raise food. Money was hard to come by.
    Loved all his movies.
They could sing and dance at the same time and not miss a beat.
Bells of Saint Mary's is on of my favorites.

Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra have a Christmas complication they put out way back. My mom listened to it on cassettes and I made sure to update to CD’s a while ago and now look it up online. The voices of Bing and Frank are both amazing. From what I’ve heard, Bing did not want to commercialize or cheapen his performances and so did not get as much play time as Sinatra or Dean Martin and such. Saying that, Bing Crosby is one of my favorite singers from that era.

I grew up in Florida, and when I was very young I went Christmas-shopping at the Altamonte mall one time, and was treated to a local high school choir. They were very good, and did a wonderful version of "White Christmas," despite being an all-black choir from an all-black school (yeah I'm old) in Florida where we don't get much snow. I thought the irony was delightful.
Yes, Bing has a magic voice. I remember a (very very) old cartoon showing a chicken-farm with two different stages on which roosters are "crooning," and as they sing, the chickens swoon -- the action switches back and forth between the two singers. Their voices: Sinatra and Bing. It's social commentary on the fact that at the time, the two singers who made the ladies swoon were Sinatra, and Bing.
By the way, this song was the #1 selling record of all time until it was finally surpassed by the Beatles' "Hey Jude."

My favorite Bing Crosby is a duet with Frank Sinatra called What A Swell Party This Is, from the only movie they appeared in together, High Society. It's funny, playful, and showcases both singers' trademark styles. Highly recommended.

"High Society" is my favorite too, but Bing and Frank did appear together in another movie: "Robin and the 7 Hoods," along with Sinatra's "Rat Pack" companions Dean Martin and Sammy Davis, Jr. Their rendition of the song, "Style" is great and there's even a distant Christmas connetion. Although "Style" is not a Christmas song, Crosby did perform it on at least one of his many TV Christmas specials (sometime in the 1970s, I think.)

According to Guinness World Records, Irving Berlin's "White Christmas" (1942) as performed by Bing Crosby is the best-selling single worldwide, with estimated sales of over 50 million copies.[1] The song, recognized as "the best-selling single of all time", was released before the pop/rock singles-chart era and "was listed as the world's best-selling single in the first-ever Guinness Book of Records (published in 1955) and-remarkably-still retains the title more than 50 years later". Bing recorded this and it came out a few weeks after the bombing of Pearl Harbor.
Bing would travel around performing for the troops during the war but he never wanted to sing this song because he believed it would make the men too nostalgic and sad.
However he would always give in and sing it because the soldiers would start hollering for it.

Microphone and sound-recording technology had just made major leaps in this era. like the autotune explosion of the aughts, or the proliferation of synthesizer tech in the 80's, this led to a large amount of experimentation and hyper-focus on the new tech. The style of singing is called "crooning". For the first time ever, you could put a mic close to someone's mouth and get incredible fidelity and clarity not previously possible. Singers no longer needed to project their voices like Broadway actors or opera singers to be heard or recorded. You could have a singer on a record- or even in a live concert- singing at very intimate levels who could be heard over the power of a full orchestra.
The voice "doesn't sound like it's coming from him" because you'd have to be 3" away from his mouth for him to sound like that, whereas the rest of the scene was recorded at more common mic distances.
Basically what I'm saying is that Bing Crosby was the T-Pain of his generation. 😅
