    When asked how she felt that Whitney's version went to #1 on billboard, and her own only got to #2 she said "I laughed all the way to the bank" since radio play royalties go to the songwriter not the artist.

    • @jimsteele9975
      @jimsteele9975 3 года назад +52

      I heard that she quipped "I had a country hit and put money in the bank.....but when Whitney sang it, I went out and bought the bank!" on the Jay Leno show.

    • @Rattys
      @Rattys 3 года назад +28

      She actually turned down Elvis Presley's offer to cover this song, because his manager would have required her to give up half of her royalties to the song. When Whitney's version skyrocketed, she joked that she could just buy Graceland.

    • @mythoceanas8874
      @mythoceanas8874 3 года назад +16

      I remember her talking about it on a podcast, interview or something. Where she knew the song was being covered, but hadn't heard it. She was driving down the road and the song came on the radio. She had to pull over on the side of the road and listen to it.
      Also, to be fair, a lot of people cover Dolly songs. I don't think any of the covers went as far or got as big as Whitney Houston's did. I think Dolly is a great singer/song writer but man Whitney killed it, and pretty much made the song her own. Similar to Johnny Cash and Nine Inch nails, that is a good interview as well them discussing that cover.

    Did you know? Porter Wagonner ran into financial difficulties years after Dolly left his show. To help him out, Dolly bought his portfolio of music. (I know I'm not explaining this with the correct terminology.) And then, she gifted the whole thing back to him.
    Also, did you know? Dolly has donated literally millions of children's books to babies born in her home state of Tennessee. I think it's something like a book a month for the first five years of their life. Amazingly generous woman!

    • @xtravagentk1275
      @xtravagentk1275 3 года назад +5

      You're leaving out some info that really displays Dolly's amazing character. After Dolly left the show, Porter sued her, and slammed her in the press. Then years later he was in financial trouble, and Dolly being the forgiving angel she is, bought his catalogue, and gifted it back to him. She also visited and performed for him when he was in the hospital during his final days of cancer if I recall correctly.

  • @Heiryuu
    @Heiryuu 3 года назад +148

    i've been saying it for years now, Whitney has that technically perfect sounds which is really impressive, it's a show stopper because the crowd is awed by her technical skill. Dolly parton has the emotion and it's a show stopper because the crowd can feel the emotions. both are equally impressive but in different ways.

      i’ve never understood how someone didn’t get them together to sing the song as a duet back in the day. Sadly it can’t happen any more, unless Whitney’s daughter is a singer (i don’t know). If she is, i would love to see a duet between her and Dolly.

    Porter Wagner was another country singer at the time who had his own show. This song was Dolly’s way of saying “I am leaving but I will always appreciate you and the opportunity you gave me.”

    In 1982 Dolly starred in “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” with Burt Reynolds. In that movie she sang my favorite version of this song, a very emotional goodbye to Burt’s character. Also she sang another great song, “Hard Candy Christmas.” It’s a great musical comedy that deals with the politics in Texas around one of the last whorehouses in the state.

    Dolly has been married to Carl Dean for over 50 years. She is singing this song as a goodbye to Porter Wagner, the man who had hired her as the 'girl' singer in his TV show, The Porter Wagner Show. He didn't want her to leave and finally agreed to but on the condition that he record her song. Porter ended up suing Dolly later on but ended up financially broke. Dolly as generous as she is, bought all his songs and just gave them to him. She is a sweetheart. BTW, you had a great reaction when comparing Whitney's way of singing it (I always thought it was more commercial than anything else) but Dolly's way is very personal and emotional.

    Whitney had a beautiful voice and when I hear her version of this song I hear her displaying her vocal abilities. Dolly also has a beautiful voice and when I hear her sing it I hear the emotion she was feeling when she wrote the song. People who think this was originally Whitney's song obviously don't know that Dolly wrote the song and recorded it when Whitney was about 10 years old. I go a little nuts when I hear people attributing the original of this great song to ANYONE other than Dolly. The love Dolly mentions was totally as a friend and mentor. She actually WAS married when she appeared on the Porter Wagoner show and she and her husband are still together. BTW, I became a fan of Dolly Parton's when I didn't even know her name. All I knew was that she was the blonde who had the hit song "Dumb Blonde" and in all those years (about 50 or so) I have NEVER heard her curse. You can be a spitfire and stand up for yourself and even become involved in a heated argument without saying even one single solitary curse word. I'm pretty sure she was raised by a mom and dad who would have taken her out back to the woodshed if she came out with any sort of vulgarity. I was also raised by such a mom and dad and I can attest to the fact that training like that lasts a lifetime.

    In 1966 or 67, Dolly became a regular performer on The Porter Wagner Show. They fought like cats and dogs (Dolly's words). When her contract was up, Dolly was ready to move on. Porter wanted her to stay, even going so far as to tell her she owed it to him. She wrote this song in one night hoping it would explain how she felt and how grateful she was to him. She sat him down and sang it for him. But he was just too angry. She left the show and went out on her own. Porter actually sued her for the rights to the songs she wrote while under contract with him. And he won the suit. Her songs were legally his. Years later, Porter was sick and broke and mostly forgotten, except in Nashville. He was selling all those songs that he had won. Dolly Parton bought all her songs back from him. Dolly has a beautiful heart full of compassion and forgiveness. She felt no sense of justice or revenge. After buying the songs from him, she gifted them back to him. Even though I loved this song first by Dolly Parton, I also really liked Whitney's version. Whitney Huston's mother, Cissy Huston was one of Elvis Presley's backup singers called "The Sweet Sensations". Cissy Huston later had a stellar career as a gospel singer.

    I was born close to Dolly's hometown and still live here in the Great Smoky Mountains. She is a local and national treasure. She is a mountain girl who will fight a bear or a mountain lion for those she loves but she does not CURSE. Check out her Imagination Library for preschool children. Look into her work during the local wildfires in 2016 when she helped all who lost homes and businesses. She is the salt of the earth. We adore her and pray for her because our treasures are leaving us one by one.

    I was lucky to meet her twice. She scared the hell out of me the second time, because I knew she was coming into the restaurant I managed amd I was standing a few feet inside the front door to greet her. My back was to the front door because I was also trying to keep an eye on the bar. She came up behind me with Blackstock and said "Hi." I turned around and almost fell over. Both times I met her, she looked perfect! She may be short (I don't know, I'd have to research it), but with her personality, she is 15' tall all the time. What a wonderful lady. Most people who deservedly reach that status are jerks, and I have met many of them. But Dolly is properly named, because she is a doll~

    Dolly loved Porter like a Mentor or Coach who gave her the chance to become established in Nashville, Music City. She was becoming more popular than the star of the Porter Wagoner Show and she knew it. Five years had come and gone so she said she wanted to leave. Thus the song. Later in life Porter fell on hard times and sold the rights to all his music. In an act of love and respect, Dolly bought back the rights to his music and gave those rights back to Porter. Now that is Pure Love.

    It’s definitely a companionship, respectful, and appreciative type of love. He gave her a chance, and in a sense she owes him her start. But she never owed him her talent and her future, and when she outgrew the show with Porter, she had to be the one to make that move. And the result was that his show e never did reach the same popularity following that. But he had his time in the sun and it was her turn to see how far she could go.
