I work as a paramedic. I’ve never treated a morbid obese patient over the age of 65 in my entire 10 year career. You know why? Obese people rarely make it to that age. If you’re 20-40 and you accept obesity because your body is getting by, give it time. It will fail on you fast and there’s no way to stop it once it does.

    I was530lbs and I turned things around and I'm 6'1 220.
I can say that when you get so big, if you lose 50 -75 lb you can't really see much results. Some people chase $ some drugs, some food.
Everyone is addicted to something in this country, and our culture is one of over indulging. It's not easy to break these cycles. Most of the time when a person does make a change, they hope for a little praise, unfortunately it doesn't work like that. People think, your just doing what the rest of us are doing everyday, no realizing how hard it is to be (normal) like everyone else. It's a vicious cycle.
Withalot of hard work I have kept my weight off for over 20 plus years, but it's not easy. I hope anyone struggling with any type of addiction no matter what it may be, finds the courage and has the support to make a change for the better.

I will say this, it doesn't cost a person anything to encourage someone, tell them they are doing good and give then a little praise and encouragement, it goes alot father than you think, this applies to everyday life.
I cost you nothing to give someone a compliment, and you will probably never know how much it means to that person and it may just give them the motivation they need to succeed. Besides, everyone is just looking for acceptance and wants to be liked and loved, make someone's day and pay them a compliment.
If we would all give more praise and less criticism we just might be able to turn this world around.

I've lost over 100lbs 3 separate times. There's a certain hopelessness that comes with the depression involved in being terribly overweight that most people just don't get, not even the people going through it a lot of the time. Intellectually, you know that you're killing yourself and that there are things you can do to change that, but on another level it seems impossible. The idea of you changing feels like fantasizing about winning the lottery, it can never actually happen, not to you. You just can't see yourself getting a win. And no, getting smoke blown up your ass isn't the answer. The way you do it is by getting some wins under your belt, any little victories, so you stop seeing yourself as destined to lose.

@@Cocoisagordonsetter Different things work for different people, and it can be particularly difficult for women to meet their goals.
For me, fasting intermittently works. And it's not so much that fasting helps much with my weight directly, it just refreshes my energy levels and keeps me even, so that I can sleep well and exercise. It's hard to start, but once you get used to it, it's a cakewalk.
But some people just can't fast, for them elimination usually works. Journal everything you eat and the subsequent effects on sleep, mood, energy, etc. And I've yet to hear anyone say "Processed sugars, simple carbs, and starches worked for me."
And not to sound dismissive, but I have seen a lot of 40 year old women stress over putting on 20-30lbs since their 20s, and to that I'd say not to make something a bigger problem than what it is. Mountains are much more difficult to climb than molehills. It's good to keep things in perspective and recognize that making a big dent in a small amount of weight is much more difficult than a large amount.
One last thing, (sorry for the essay), weight that you've recently gained is much easier to lose than weight that you've carried for a while. And once your body has become acclimated to the new weight, it will always be a bit of a struggle to keep it off. Not to scare you, but it's best to tackle these things right away, trust me, lol.

    • @kangarooninja2594
      @kangarooninja2594 Год назад +1

@@Cocoisagordonsetter Oh wow, yeah, it's not always just a simple calculation of how many calories you consume vs how much you move. Well, technically it is, but your body can vary widely in how it uses those calories based on things like medication, age, and sex.
I always get a little frustrated with people who oversimplify metabolism with "calories in, calories out." It's like they completely ignore all the people who eat like a horse, exercise irregularly, and still stay lean. It's obviously not that simple.
And then there's appetite. I have a friend who, before being put on psyche meds, could barely finish a meal, and then became so voracious after the meds he'd make himself sick from overeating. Meds can definitely be a mixed blessing.
As for metabolism, in my experience, high intensity interval training works wonders. You essentially push yourself to your limits with cardio for a short burst, recover, then rinse and repeat until exhausted.
But for most, from what I've seen, increasing muscle mass and strength training works best. And, if I'm not mistaken, increased strength is one of the better ways to give yourself an edge against cancer.
Speaking of, I hope you're well, I've seen people fighting cancer and I know what it can take out of you. Having to stress over weight while dealing with that can't be easy. But it sounds like you have a great attitude and a big family around you, and that makes all the difference. I'm sure you've got this.

@@Cocoisagordonsetter Oh good, then you have definitely got this. And being in your late 40s is hardly old, lol. You're still young enough that your body should be able to recover fairly easily.
Though, I've heard from a number of people that taking collagen is a good idea to help with skin issues when losing weight after like your 20s-30s. And that autophagy from fasting works wonders at reversing scarring, loose skin, and joint, ligament, and tendon issues from weight gain at older ages too.
The hormonal issues are going to be tough, but if you've already been through cancer, you can handle this. Good luck, but I doubt you'll need it, lol.

Here is the thing though. Nobody who is obese, doesn’t know that they are obese. nobody who is overweight, especially women, doesn’t know that they’re overweight. So it is absolutely useless to point it out to somebody as if they don’t know. It’s like pointing out to a drug addict that they have a drug problem. While they may deny to you that they have one, trust me, they are fucking well aware. It always annoys me, because yes, obesity is unhealthy, but these people want to jump in peoples business just so they can point out their flaws and behaviors. This society has an addiction with pointing out everybody else’s problems, but their own. It’s not your place to say anything about somebody else’s life. It’s not affecting you in anyway whatsoever. And like I said, you are not doing a thing to help someone by telling them that they’re overweight. They know. It is up to them and only them to change it. You’re stating the obvious is it going to do a thing. As someone who used to suffer with eating disorders, it would actually probably make things worse. Because the worse you feel about yourself, the more you self medicate by eating.

It unfortunately has been abused to the point where making destructive decisions is celebrated.

I have always worked out and I eat depending on my activity. Little activity that day, then I will eat less food but generally I work out daily. Routine is the key and it can work in either direction. Many in my family are overweight and as a kid I realized I never wanted to be overweight or unhealthy so I never took on bad habits. However I must concede I had a great childhood with no trauma or issues. I grew up very middle-class and in a positive, supportive environment with good friends and family around me. I am sure I would be singing a very different tune if I grew up in poverty or abuse. My father was fit and slender for most of his life. He used to eat popcorn a lot. Back in 70s-80s, there was the concept of "free food," meaning that there are/were foods that you could eat all you want and never get fat. I said to him one day, "Popcorn must be one of those free foods, because you're not overweight, and you eat it all the time?" His reply was, "What do you think they fatten up the pigs with?" Corn is considered by some to be a goitrogen, which means (as I understand it) that it inhibits thyroid function. Along with unfermented soy, we're all getting a bit of "what they fatten up livestock with" in our processed foods, and this is not supposed to be a reversible process--it's meant to fatten up meat for market that pays the supplier by the pound. Permanently damaging the thyroid is what we're doing to ourselves. Unless you take a pig off soybean meal, put it on a treadmill, and it loses weight, I'm going to believe that this is the case, and now I actually think it's the traces/residue of glyphosate that are causing this problem, as RoundUp is supposedly an endocrine disruptor.

Even the household maple syrup that everybody believes it's real maple syrup is actually all corn syrup with added flavoring and coloring. In fact real maple syrup doesn't even taste like what every thinks maple syrup should taste like. We have all been sold a bill of goods and are continuing being sold the same bill of goods till this day. I mean just the maple syrup alone says it all, there's labels that actually say "no high fructose corn syrup" in big letters on the front but when you look at the ingredients it clearly still says corn syrup. Love you Bill but, the munchies analogy is way off. I’m a very fit person who struggles every day with “addiction” to food. If I gave in, I would be fat. If you had compared their love for food with your your love for pot, then you would have been more on the money. Go ahead, give up pot for a year and then only allow yourself pot once a week for the rest of your life after that. That’s more on par with what people who are “addicted” to food deal with to stay healthy. Here’s the other twist. You don’t need pot to live. Alcoholics don’t need alcohol to live. People who struggle with food issues need to eat so, they can’t just cut out what they are “addicted” to. I’m not making excuses. As I said, I really struggle with food issues but, I stay fit by constantly fighting my urges and exercising every day.

I love when people can love and celebrate their bodies and feel good in their skin. However as an ICU nurse… obesity is a huge problem. Way more complications, way more health problems, and it can really affect your health so much more than people know. I had a patient so large that we couldn’t send her to the CT scan when she was going into shock because she wouldn’t fit. Could only go to THE ZOO to use their CT scan an hour away to find out if we can get an answer to why she so sick. That is a HUGE delay in getting a correct diagnosis. That’s just one example of how care gets delayed. If you get pregnant it’s harder to get a good epidural going for pain relief, and a cesarian is more complicated. If you are recovering from surgery you’re probably more likely going to get complications like pneumonia because getting people out of bed after major surgery is already tough sometimes with all the drains and monitors and IVs etc but when someone is very large it takes a team of people and we don’t always have the manpower to get you moving as much as someone who is thinner and easier to mobilize. More likely to get pressure sores in the ICU for this reason too. So hard to move someone’s position if they’re like 300Lbs and paralyzed on a ventilator.
I think having normal bodies is healthy for kids to see. I grew up with the anorexic looking models with hip and collar bones popping out and low rise pants. Made me feel like any weight was so ugly on me. Love the body positivity that popular media is starting to protray but show scars, breasts post breastfeeding, and cellulite and natural skin texture, and healthy but maybe not super toned people (you can be healthy and not sculpted) and dad bods. It can be as hard to treat as restrictive eating (anorexia), and she insists that shame and hate towards their bodies makes recovery harder, not easier. I understand the view of "persuading people that fat is healthy is dangerous", but telling people that being fat is wrong and they must be ashamed of it isn't gonna make them lose weight. The movement was aimed to those who are already fat, and that "unconditional self acceptance" makes getting heathy easier, not harder. Sure, some people may use it as an excuse to not try, but those people were not gonna try regardless. It is also more like OCD than like the munchies...

I don’t know what it’s like to have an extra 20 pounds on my slight frame, forget an extra 100…I’m 10 pounds heavier than I was as a senior in high school and it’s mostly muscle…and I’m 46 years old now…I weigh 140 standing 5’6”…..I’m a life long cyclist and I know that I have felt the difference, on the bike of 2-3 pounds of weight gain…and it’s usually a mixture of water and muscle as I’ve always been in the single digits of body fat percentage…finding motivation and energy when it’s not normally present isn’t simple or easy…and the emotional state of a bigger/overweight person is as crucial as their baseline health…”is what I’m working towards worth the effort?….am I still going to be displeased with myself and my body?….why should I bother?”

Its worse in the states where on the one hand we have to directly pay for our insurance, and still have to absorb rising costs spread among all cohorts due to people with unhealthy lifestyles. My wife is a dual citizen (from Montreal) and her sister and mother still live there. They love the health care system in Canada and told me the stories about having to wait are bullshit and the care is much better than anything in the states. My SIL has a condo in Florida she goes to in the winter with her long-term BF, last time he was there he got COVID and had to be hospitalized. Worse treatments ever and was a miracle he survived. As soon as he could he flew home to Canada, got the much better healthcare, and was right as rain very quickly. Bottom line is you have NO IDEA how good you have it in Canada and I would relocate there in a second if my wife did not want to stay close to the adult kids. I absolutely hate what America has become, unless you are rich its just a shitty place to live IMO.

For me, body positivity is not about saying oh im great and i should overeat, but its about saying yes i am not ashamed of my size because shame will keep me stuck at this weight. Im not ok at this weight but im not gonna be ashamed in the least- a bigger house usually means a higher mortgage- and for me shame would keep me unhealthy. I love myself enough to work on me as a project. I will love me now as much as I would later because losing weight wont make everything wonderful and that messes people up too. Lets be clear. Telling someone they are a fat pig and deserve to die is not going to make them lose weight either. Shame/trauma is often behind massive weight gain. Telling someone they look great when its a lie is also harmful but that doesnt mean they should be treated like a walking target. Overweight people just dont want to be constantly shamed and treated like lower class citizens by mean-spirited people. Is that too much to ask for? Thats not the same as them wanting to be lied to about how good they look or how healthy they are. Some obese people want to be lied to but thats not every overweight person's issue. Many just dont want to be harassed in their daily lives cuz, guess what, they will stress-eat as a result.

So many things can be done: Get a small fridge, pay in real dollars, put your kitchen on the top floor, sell that microwave. Grow your own vegetables, that farming labor will do some good in helping lose weight. Instead , these days people just choose to come up with all sorts of psychological excuses for themselves when they were probably not even diagnosed by a real professional. Regardless, the answer to that is obviously not to applaud morbid obesity. I mean people who aren’t just 10-20 pounds overweight, but 100-150. We all slip with our weight sometimes, and we can’t bully people into change. It’s important to have understanding. Just like with smoking or any addictive behavior, there’s no reason to be cruel, but we also don’t need to put it on a pedestal. Just my two cents.
