I felt the same about Nick and Charlie. The first time it came up I was like 😮. Heartstopper has always been so innocent and so heartwarming that I had a shield my eyes moment even with it being totally fade to black.
The Sunbearer Trials was one of my top ten for 2022 so I just love hearing that other people loved it too! But I do agree that competitions in YA is just over done 😂
I LOVE worldbuilding but I could not get into A Winter's Promise and basically every time I see it talked about people are hyping it as one of the best books they've ever read. I was honestly scared when you held it up because I cannot hear that anymore, it's started to make me feel crazy for not being able to get into it. I thought the concepts were cool but it was too slow for me to care. I don't wish difficult to get into book on people, but your review made me feel seen (though I am confused on how you're continuing, but maybe the next books in the series are just plot because so much set up happened in book 1). Thank you.
I felt the same way about The Mirror Visitor series. The second book also crawls, but is still an interesting journey, and then I dnf'd the third book at 210 pages because nothing was happening.
I want to get into the Heartstopper series so badly but I just very much dislike graphic novels/comics so I don't think I should even try. I wish they would do the same thing that the Fence series did where another author with permission novelized the series bc then I'd pick it up in a heartbeat
