  • In this watercolour painting lesson I am painting a lighthouse. Normally I know my channel cover watercolour painting only in the context of line and wash, urban sketching and fountain pen drawing, but for once, I've decided to go all out with this watercolour lesson.
In this lesson I will go through the artwork stage by stage and you can even download the reference image to follow along or paint your own version.

So generous of you to share your paintings real time with so much help and information Doug! I’ve always been drawn to the sea, ships and boats and all it entails!I must thank you for your suggestions and encouragement,I commented on a previous video you posted about art and mental health about the problems I was having..I am slowly trawling(pardon the pun!) through your videos and saw your simple boat shape technique, the figure of eight and thought if you really love something surely you can draw it!I had a go and it turned out really well, even did a bit of scenery around it..made me so happy!!All thanks to you!Watercolours have always seemed daunting to me,I have some so I should use them…baby steps!!🫣Wish me luck!I love your style btw! Thanks once again…looking forward to your next video.❤

Ahh that's great to hear. Sometimes the simple tips are the most effective and give people confidence. Watercolours are a fun media but as they involve layering and colour mixing it can seem intimidating. I am no master with them that's for sure but I love the idea of throwing paint about and seeing what happens. Thanks so much for taking the time to comment. It means a lot to know that people are getting joy from their art because of me. I'm proud of that!

That was fascinating. Going to get out my WC and run this again and give it a try.

So glad. I knew this video wouldn't get much views. So glad someone got something from it.

So, finally finished another WC sketch I was slowly working on and had my favorite mixing tray freed up so I could try painting along with this. It was a lot of fun, though I find difficulty with wet-on-wet techniques because of the (lack of) humidity here, probably 11-13% here this afternoon. I mostly use WC to add a splash of color to sketchbooks, so learning actual technique has been something I have been meaning to work on lately. Thank you for the push that direction..Thank you for doing this video.

Well I painted along with you with natural drying times inbetween. Can see areas which I need to improve however it continues to be another lighthouse to my sketching journey. Thank you.
