    Well, here you go:
    1) Do not be afraid to doodle - have fun, don't think too much!
    (angry rabbits)
    2) Don't be over ambitious - especially when you're tired or pressed for time, it’s good practice!
    3) Don't buy a large or too large of a sketchbook - go A5 or smaller so you can get to it fast
    4) Do small sketches every day - 10 minutes or even 5 minutes is enough, again: no complicated stuff
    5) Try new technics say cross hatching, blind drawing (not with a blindfold you idiot..) but look at your subject once and go for it! Make it fun.
    (watch out for the rabbits..)
    6) Do 3 weeks (if you can). Look back after that and see how you have progressed. Review it, you'll probably be amazed at your own progression! Yeah, you will..
    7) Draw anything, be it big or small (NOT COMPLICATED!) and scribble/doodle/sketch it. Be messy if that helps, perfect doesn't exist!
    8) DO NOT USE AN ERASER! Yeah, all in CAPS.. but you learn from your mistakes. So, grab a pen or permanent ink on a pointy twig and go for it! Rough it in and do some bolder lines, just DO IT.
    9) Be kind to yourself. If you don't like your doodle/sketch thingy that you have created in 10 or 15 minutes, so what. IT'S ABOUT THE PROCESS!!
    (Yeah, there you go, practice and process and progress, sound familiar right? WELL, IT WORKS!)
    10) Free yourself from distractions. How? Destroy your phone, burn the TV, blow up the game console and sit in bed or lie in the grass (yeah, I know, outside is terrifying.. it’s fun though!) and just start sketching!
    Got that?
    Good, now's your time to grab some tea like Doug (if not British go for coffee!), but don't smell at your pets breath..

    I'm autistic and have to deal with anxiety. Drawing, sketching, just letting watercolours flow is almost the only thing that really makes me calm and helps me relax. So for me, it's fair to say that drawing helps with mental illnesses ❤

    Doug, this is genius! How did the RUclips algorithms ‘know’ (angry 🐰🐰) that this was PRECISELY what I needed to see today? I have been struggling for months, staring at the pages of my new sketchbook (having completed one that I thought turned out crap but still kind of proud I did complete it) afraid to start sketching and painting in it because I want whatever that first page will be (another dilemma) to be perfect. It can’t be perfect, of course!! I know that. I’m still a beginner to watercolour and I haven’t sketched since I was a little girl. All this to say that your video today was exactly the inspiration I needed to get my fountain pen (not pencil and eraser) out and start scribbling without fear because…who’s going to be looking at this sketchbook anyway? The worst possible critic, of course, me 😆
    Thank you for this, Doug. I have liked and subscribed and look forward to learning with you 🤗❤️💯🇨🇦💫

      Thanks so much for your kind comment and also sharing your story. It's certainly one familier to me and I'm sure many of the subscribers. We have all been there at times. The one extra advice I would chuck in the mix is don't start your sketchbook on the first page. That way there is less pressure. I hope you get your mojo back. 👍👍

    tip 11) do not show your sketchbook to others, they will either gush about how perfect it is or criticize every line you made for not being "perfect"
    (oops, got those angry rabbits myself).
    Enjoy your tea, early here, so doing coffee myself. Thank you for an enlightening video.

    I draw most days and have a strong desire to do so. But I really struggle to see it as play and be so care free with it despite constantly trying to adopt this attitude. This invariably leads to me being disappointed with the results, to the point where I feel more pressure to create something that I'm happy with next time. I have this irrational fear that if I just 'play' without focusing on the desired outcome then I'll forget how to do it properly. When I create something I actually like I can also very quickly lose confidence if I'm disappointed with subsequent efforts. Its a vicious cycle and I'm not convinced it is good for my mental health. 🤣
    Thank you for a thought provoking video!

    • @dougjacksonart
      @dougjacksonart  6 месяцев назад +1

      Hi Gary. I know I'm talking here about ideals and the reality is we all go through periods of struggling with our art. The problem is then we often 'double down' and try to over complicate rather than stripping back to basic and keeping it simple. It all a voyage of discovery in a way. Keep going and stay curious. The results are not the whole process. Just the end. thanks for your lovely and thought provoking comment.

  • @pragativasisht4432

    These are all great tips - because I've followed them in the past! I started a $2 sketchbook for the very first time in Jan and I'm nearly finished with it! I think the tip about not using a pencil/eraser and using a pen is key. You can't go back, so you have to push forward! And that's what gets things done. and then you add colour and realise it's not as bad as you thought it could be and so the virtuous cycle begins...

    Some very solid advice there Doug. It's been a very, very long time in coming, but in December I finally decided (after listening to my wife) to seek medical help to deal with my depression. My sketching and IG is really helping me cope with the issues that I'm experiencing, because it takes my mind to a more restful, relaxing place and also gives me a great sense of achievement.....which is something I certainly need in my day, and not just going to bed thinking 'huh was that it?...can't wait for tomorrow'. I look forward to sketching and doodling on a daily basis and hopefully I'll be back to work in the near future with a brighter outlook on things. Cool video and thanks for sharing🙂

    • @dougjacksonart
      @dougjacksonart  6 месяцев назад

      Oh man I know that feeling of 'let's just get through the day' as well as 'laying in bed in the morning and thinking 'I can't face another day of this!' ... it's so easy and natural to look for solutions and treatments but ultimately (and for me) often it's about focusing on simple tasks. Sketching or washing up with the right music and podcast can be a pleasure. On those tough days it's just putting one foot in front of another to keep plodding on. That's one of the reasons I'm always banging on about the value of process and doing and not the results. If you think of art as a play, a pleasure and a joy then you'll look forward to it and enjoy it. We frame our own lives with our own attitude. We'll anyway, enough of my nonesense. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Us blokes are terrible when it comes to talking about mental health so kuddos to you brother 👍🤘

    Great tips, Doug. I found decent blank sketchbooks, fineliners & brush pens at the Dollar Store for getting my drawing skills & muscle memory redeveloped. Or, to try my initial thumbnail before transferring the sketches to my nicer sketchbooks. I can't be precious about $1 sketchbooks & pens. They've paid for themselves already. I don't want to damage the paper in my watercolor sketchbook or toned sketchbooks erasing. I get everything worked out in the el cheapo sketchbooks, first. I am trying different loose styles that are alien to my autistic savant hyperrealistic memory. Otherwise I am happy to just go for it in ink. Thanks for sharing your expertise with us 🎨

I didn’t have to try to come up with an idea just sit down and draw! You can do the same thing for yourself. Make a list of ideas, draw what you want each day but if you get stuck refer to your list.( Keep your list in the front of your sketch book, add to your list as ideas strike.) Also keep your sketch book and favorite pens handy.
