    Here’s a non-shooting compliment: you have good camera presence and excellent verbal presentation skills. Most people (including myself) struggle with verbal clarity, often filling the pauses and white space between thoughts with “umms” and “uhhs” which can get distracting for the viewer. Nice shooting too👌🏼

    For everyone curious, that Round is still putting more energy down at 700 then a 22lr mini mag is at the muzzle. So while unethical for game obviously, if your target isn't playing any games it will make them stop and well-placed would have good chances of hitting vital organs.

      A weapon should fit the mission. Location and terrain are indeed mission factors.
      The overwhelming majority of combat rifle engagements since the rifle was invented have been between 0-300m.
      Where you live should be factored into your weapon configuration decision.
      If you live in a dense area (more trees or buildings than people) and typically can't see much past x distance, then that's your maximum engagement distance.
      An SBR with DMR ammo/optic (77gr + 2.5x10) is better than a 20 M16 with 55gr and irons.
      If you live in a dessert or mountainous region where you can see for miles, then a longer barrel will do.
      Regardless, you're allowed to have more than one rifle/upper. Buy/build various length uppers. Get a few optics with QD mounts to mix and match as you see fit.
      Then buy and hord 55gr for training, and 77gr for the zombies.

    There is something to be said about a SPR that fits in a small backpack.
    I think we have come to the same basic conclusion. Over the past few months i took my 18x Mk5 off my 18", threw it on my 12.5, and found that i gave up so little in regards to performance that I decided 11.5-13.9" was pretty much all the barrel i am willing to give to 5.56 anymore. Yes, it is not as good at range, but the difference is so small that the advantages you get from the smaller lighter package far outweigh the losses imo. The large increase in optical quality of the traditional SPR, along with the soft shooting of the RLGS (MLGS 12.5 + A5 shoots basically the same), is where the magic is, not the small increase in velocity. From the 12.5 77smks @2530 are consistent to ~675, 18 @2750 gets you to ~775, with +~11% drift for the 12.5 at 500(~3in @ 8mph). Regardless of length, with the drop-off of 556 @ ~300y, you are entirely reliant on wind reading, spotting misses, and ability to make quick follow ups. The energy at those extended ranges is so low on either that it borders on irrelevant.
    2 things though. I did find that a 2.5-10x(this part of the market needs better options) + 12o red dot, a more useable reticle on low power, and significant weight savings, was a more versatile fit. Also, there is some sacrifice made in the balance department, especially with a law folder, in that even with a bipod and suppressor the balance point is still slightly behind the front of the magwell. Not a huge deal, but not ideal for positional / tripod / offhand.
    16"+ im going 6arc and back to the Mk5 where you regain that balance and have a massive BC advantage where that extra velocity is easier to justify.
    As much as i love my short AR10 .308s / 6.5s, that is a completely different animal for a different purpose and needs not be compared imo. That being said, still fun to watch 😁
    The answer is still basically, take the longest barrel that you have no good reason not to take.
    Good vid. Good shootin.

    • @MountainsMulletsMerica
      @MountainsMulletsMerica  2 года назад +9

      100% agree with you anymore! I legit don’t see the point in a 5.56 AR with a barrel over about 12.5” anymore. If you want to take longer shots, there are much better options to use. Simply adding a couple more inches of barrel length will not get you drastic performance improvements. I actually had a 20” precision 5.56 upper years ago…. 800 yds was still about the max I would shoot it as it was impossible to spot misses and in most cases even harder to tell when you made an impact…..

    In regards to terminal performance: because bullets shed velocity faster at higher speeds, going to a shorter barrel doesn't lose you as much as one may think. Assuming 2750fps velocity from say an 18" barrel, per the AB ballistic calculator it only takes 96 meters for a 77 gr. TMK to slow down to the 2523fps of your 11.5". So the difference in "effective range" between the two barrels is barely 100 yards!
    The 77 TMK is quite slippery for a 5.56; long barrels would suffer from even greater diminishing returns with lighter, less aerodynamic bullets.
    Great practical demonstration! I was legit clapping when you got that first round hit at 790 haha

    I have a 1-6X Kahles on one of my 11.5" guns, the others wear a 1-4X Steiner and a T2.
    Medium range (600-800 yds) is a fun exercise with an 11.5" gun, but kitting one out with higher end variable optics, WML, suppressor, etc. starts adding considerable weight.
    My 1-6X 11.5" does fine to 500, but I run out of gas and optic past that for consistent hits (I run 77 gr OTM also).
    With the 1-6X optic and WML that Carbine is a Pig, and at MY upper limits for a "shorty" 11.5" gun.
    Guess I look at it as; "different tools for different jobs" or "Jack of all trades, Master of none".
    If I kit out an 11.5" gun to be a consistent performer past 600 yds., that gun no longer has the capability of being an ass kicking CQB/"contact distance to 200 yds." weapon. It has lost maneuverability in tight quarters and speed on shot to shot, target to target.
    I prefer a DMR to be 16" minimum, to 18", and load it out to maximize that one task.
    Great vid though, I enjoyed it.

    • @MountainsMulletsMerica
      @MountainsMulletsMerica  2 года назад +3

      100% agree. While I was able to connect with the 11.5" rifle past 600 yds, it's not really the optimal setup for an SBR. I actually don't have an optic for this rifle at the moment but my plan for it will be getting either a 1-8 or 1-10 for it. For the type shooting I like to do these optics seem like they would be a nice combination of decent short range capability as well as enough magnification to stretch out to a couple hundred yards.

    A 11.5" bbl will send the bullet well, well past 300 yards. So would a 10 or 12.5". Now, how much ass does the bullet have behind it once it gets there? That's where the short(er) barrels are going to start having issues. Shorter barrel = less velocity = poorer terminal effect, larger holds/dials, and more wind drift. I have a 14.5 sr15 and after a lot of different ar15 builds on 5.56, I will never go shorter than a pinned and welded 16", so something right at about 13.7 - 13.9. I just think 5.56 is not the right answer if you want to go short. I'll stick to 300BO, suppress it, and shoot it only sometimes due to the cost. Hope you do more videos on the sr15!

    Building a urban main squeeze rifle and settled on a 11.5 build. With a 2.26 riser with 3x magnifier… plan on running strictly 62gr FMJ & M855 do you think the 62gr would do as good out to 400-500 yards if need be. realistically I think the furthest I’d ever engage if needed would be 350yards maybe 400.

      To be fair I’m not exactly regularly shooting my 5.56 SBRs past 300 yds, really just did it in this video to show what’s possible. That said shooting conditions will play a major role in how 5.56 performs at distance. If conditions are nice, I’d fully expect an 11.5” 5.56 rifle running something like 77gr ammo to be able to connect on a full size torso at 600ish yds with consistency. Optics are a big part of shooting to distance as well. What kind of optic are you running on your rifle?

    I apologize if you mention this in the video but i dont got the time to watch the full thing right now because im at work. But my question is what is the effective range of a 11.5" AR? Like how far out will it still make a lethal shot if absolutely need be. Because im sure it can be stretched really far if its a good shooter behind it. But does it still have the power needed at those longer ranges?

    • @MountainsMulletsMerica
      @MountainsMulletsMerica  Год назад

      Oh man that is a great question and not something I covered in the video. I’m hoping to be able to do some long distance shooting into ballistics gel at some point to get an idea of how bullets behave at distance but haven’t been able to pull that off yet. Given the reduced velocity of the 11.5” barrel I would only feel confident in its lethality out to a couple hundred yards at best, certainly the short barrel is best suited to a cqb type role but as shown in this video it is capable of accurately putting rounds on target at longer distances if needed. Thanks for watching!

    I love trolling these comments on 11.5 rifles, most ppl who are commenting that you don't have terminal ballistics, but neither do they, lol. The 5.56 looses lethality at 400 yds anyway, 350 yds if it's a 16' barrel. Ever wonder why special forces run sbr's? It's not about that one shot kill Hollywood makes ppl believe they need. It's accuracy and speed that keep you alive and a lighter weapon gives you just that. Once you poke a hole in your target, their focus is no longer on trying to kill you, but to plug that new hole up they got that bloods coming out of. That buys you time to either evade or set up a better tactical advantage and re-engage. In a SHTF situation they're probably not going to have access to medical and will have to rely on why they have in the field for survival. They teach you in SF training that injury prevention keeps you alive! Any injury in the field drastically drops your survival rate and slows the team down. So unless you're pulling overwatch providing long range capabilities for a team, a sbr will do all you need as far as staying a live in a worse case scenario. Long live the SBR 💪
