  • I often get asked by a lot of aspiring filmmakers if it's worth going to a film school here in the Philippines. I decided to make a video about it and share my personal experience as a film graduate. In this video, I weigh the pros and cons of going to a film school here in the Philippines.
    DISCLAIMER: This is an opinion piece based on my personal experience. This is NOT a promotion for any film school.

    This video made me tear up. I'm a 2nd year ECE student now but I can't take my mind off of BA Film because I know that deep inside my heart, this is the path that I want to take. From my high school years, I enjoyed writing literature, and content for newspaper making and broadcasting, composing songs, and creating short films for contests or projects. I even met with a producer during my journalism trainings in TV Broadcasting and that person even told me, "Aabangan kita sa industriya." And that really motivated me to pursue my passion.
    But as time passed by, reality slapped me damn hard on the face and my parents technically pressured me to choose a program that is "practical" and has a board exam, Although I understand where they are coming from, I just can't deny the fact that I still think about pursuing Film and how happy I might be if I was just allowed and privileged to do so. Even now, my heart still yearns for it. I also thought about transferring but with the given circumstances I have rn, I know it's not possible. Hopefully in the future, when finally I have the freedom to do what I want, I'll still chase this dream that I have ever since and keep the fire burning.

    Hi I am so glad that I heard a lot of good advices from this video of yours.
    My name is wilson and I wanted to become a good film maker. Please dont be surprise if I will tell you that I am on my late 40's already. But believe me I have this dream of becoming a film director since I was a teenie. Yun lang dahil anak mahirap laki sa hirap at nung time ko UP at mowelfund palang ata ang nag offer ng film studies.
    So in short I cant make it that time. Until when I am already in my 30's I started to look again for an opportunity na maka pag aral ng film. It was hard to look for school especially I still dont have that much money to spend for it. Somehow There was some chances that came along but again due to you know financial issues Di ko talaga ma priority of course I have to spend money and prioritized the needs of my family. The usual food and shelter and studies of my children. But then again as I grew older the desire of becoming a film maker never subside. Then just last 2019 I have learned about Asia Pacific Film Institute (APFI) where in they offered ala carte of subjects for film.
    I said to my self this maybe my chance. So with not that big amount of money finally I joined the school. And believe me I did a lot of explaining to do to my wife why I needed this of course her major concerned was still finances. To cut my long story short. There I am sitting that time in a class room chair with a dozen of young film aspirant. I took the subject of Directing 101 basic with Jade Castro as my teacher. It was one of the happiest birthday of my life. I did some projects of course with the help of my young classmates. Obviously I am the oldest student in the class but the guys really supported me and helps me so much then. Then came 2020 I again enrolled. This time to continue it I took the subject of advance Directing 201 under JP Habac. My 2 teachers are both amazing and nice to me. However pandemic strikes and APFI closed then until now I never heard of any plan for the school to operate again. Alam mo sobrang lungkot ko now dahil sa nangyari. I felt like my dreams are fading. However to keep the flame burning for my desire I continue writing stories and screenplays on my laptop and hoping one day I can turn it to film in reality of my dreams. Though I am glad that I got new friends because of the film school. Yun nga lang nothing materializes still on my dream. I have this you tube channel which showcases of my 5 finished film school exercises. Very amature indeed of course. But nevertheless it was my work and I am proud of it.
This was a release of my lonely heart as a dreamer. I still want to learn and I still believe I can make it...
    Till here God bless you and you inspired me more I want you to know that. God bless you... thanks.

    SEEEEZ!
    Anyway, I agree with what you said sa dulo na ok, di naman siya madaling kunin pero wag naman to the point na "there's no career opportunities for filmmakers in the philippines" there is and mahirap nga lang talaga siya kunin.
    For instance, ako PA sa iba't ibang pelikula at merong isang TV series, siyempre di naman forever PA ako, there's a career that I want to pursue. And that's one step too para sa PA na magjng script con and eventually become an assistant director. Kasi maraming AD or PM na dumaan sa pagiging PA and yun na yung pinili nilang career and freelance sila.
    Mga kuya from RSVP, CMB? And freelance siya.
    Ang point ko lang naman sis, at sana maintindihan mo, ay may career sa pagfifreelance. Ako proud ako dahil PA ako sa mga pelikula at yun yung career ko ngayon pero siyempre gusto ko iimprove yung career na yun. And there's always and always an opportunity for me and us to grow in this industry.
    Ang blatant truth lang ay ang pagfifreelance ay wala itong stability at assurance (para sa isang project) kasi constant na nagbabago. At injustices sa mga prod. Kaya maraming mga freelance from the film industry na lumilipat. Na leading to change of career ng isang tao pero wag sana nating ineglect yung mga taong matagal na sa industriya na walang career ang pagiging filmmaker sa Pilipinas.
    Yun lang sez!

    • @triciasotaso
      @triciasotaso 4 года назад +2

      Yes naman swis! I agree with you full heartedly. As a freelancer for two years, mas madaming oportunidad sa industriya ng pelikula at advertisement dito sa Pilipinas. Ang dami ngang nagtatrabaho sa industriya ng walang film course o background pero ang tagal na nila. Ranging from PA, Utility to Director. Yung iba nga, iba't iba ang roles sa iba't ibang proyekto. Ako nga nag PA, nag art director, at ngayon nag scscriptcon. Nabubuhay namin kami sa mga projects at nag grgrow kada shoot. Tiyaga tiyaga lang talaga kasi hindi naman pwedeng maging direktor ka sa isang iglap. Lahat dadaanan mo. And ayun, sabi nga nila Ms. Biancs na you need to start from scratch. Nagtry siya ng ibat ibang roles bago maging producer. Para malaman niya bawat aspeto ng produksyon. Ang totoong kalaban talaga natin dito ay sistema sa industriya. Yun lang.

    • @pelikulektura
      @pelikulektura  4 года назад

      Hi Lloydie! Mali siguro yung wording kasi ang context ko ng "career" ay iba. Kasi for me, I see career as a structured and corporate type of arrangement which is very different from the freelance life. Like you said, in the freelance life it lacks stability and assurance that you will get projects. And that is EXACTLY what I was referring to.
      The point of that bit was to point out that there is no guarantee that you will have a career after graduating as a film student because it’s still something you have to work for. Unlike some paths na may sure na silang susundan (ex. Careers that have board exams and after that they go into practice) as I said in 11:53.
      On your point that freelancing is still a career, I see as a profession rather than a traditional career which is basically wording lang ang context and difference. I have a high respect for freelancers, alam mo yan. I am a freelancer myself. It was never my intention to disrespect freelancers in this video.
      I hope I cleared my points and I hope it doesn’t lead to any more misunderstandings.

    • @gabriellelloydreyes8937
      @gabriellelloydreyes8937 4 года назад +1

      @@pelikulektura Yes, Cel, gets ko naman yung bit na after you graduate eh hindi sure talaga. Pero kasi parang ang lumalabas sa video parang naneneglect natin yung mere point na wala kang makukuhang career talafa after you graduated. Am I talking about just the film industry here alone? No. Pwede di siya sa ads ang mga tinutukoy ko. At sa iba pang industriya. Mahirap lang talga siya makamit which I do agree sa mga sinabi mo.
      And gets ko din yung mga terms as a profession or such pero let's be honest here even if we dig sa mga technical term here, it's still a career sa mga ibang tao lalo na sa mga freelancers na iba. Tayo alam natin yun ang difference ng mga ganyan and the technical term pero sa mga iba? Hindi. What if mapanood ito ng iba and iba yung maging reaksyon na nasa industriya? Kaya if we make something wr should consider others and being in their lens.

      @@gabriellelloydreyes8937 I understand your point, and I really do intend to make a follow up video about career opportunities in filmmaking here in PH prior to this conversation.
      But I think what's important about this subject is the context of what I was talking about. Yes my statement that verbatim says "There are no sure opportunities for filmmakers here in the Philippines" is very blunt and can be taken the wrong way, much as you have been trying to expound to me. And I apologize for my poor wording, but it doesn't change my point in the context of what I was talking about. Ang point ko was hindi sure na magkakaron ka ng career after film school kasi pagtatrabahuhan mo pa rin siya dahil kailangan mo pa rin siya pagtrabahuhan at hindi siya instant na iseserve sa harapan mo. Ikaw mismo kilala kita, pinaghirapan mo ang naratin mo ngayon. That's exactly one of the reasons why I made that statement. Hindi ko point na attakihin ang sino man at sana wag mo i-blow out of the proportion yung lone statement na yun kasi you are implying that industry professionals will see this and see that specific statement as the only takeaway. Which is sad, because I have so much more to say beyond that.

    I am an incoming 2nd-year college in FEU under the digital cinema track. It was tough for me whether I continue or shift to another course due to practical reasons. I have to think thoroughly of it since my parents are paying a hundred thousand a year, yet there are people I knew who do not and didn't go to film school but are able to create films. I love making films, working behind the scenes, directing, writing stories, and seeing the final product after the post-production--- but yes it's expensive, and I wasn't born with a silver spoon. Now, I am worried that if ever I shifted to another course, there would be no chance that I'd be getting back to film school. That's why I am here, to find answers.

      hello! yakap with consent!!!
      i just wanna tell you that no one can decide your future but you and sometimes it's just as terrifying as it is liberating
      schools and the courses that you take will be just guides and tools to develop your skills
      don't be too hard on yourself if you feel like you're not good enough because there is no such thing as "good enough"
      in this industry regardless of film, theater, corpo, arts, marketing, ads, etc--- they're all the same banana: you deliver what is needed
      the difference is that you get to choose which one are you willing to explore and learn in order to grow
      skills can be taught and developed outside of the courses that you take but if you have the opportunity and the privilege to choose the path that you want to pursue --don't hold yourself back in fear of not being "good enough" or fear of regretting your choices in the future
      wouldn't it be better if you focus on making the most out of your situation and the opportunities that are presented to you?
      at the end of the day, no one truly knows the future -- we just do what we can and keep moving forward :)
