I'll be finishing film school this year, currently working on my final project, and I agree so much with you. Being in film school is a great opportunity to get to know people, people who will jump into crazy ideas with you, build a portfolio with you, help you find jobs. I have a job now because a teacher recommended me, so yes, it's really cool. I don't regret going to film school not even a little bit. I learned so much, made so many cool movies. I really found myself there. BUT OH MAN, the industry is so hard. Especially for me, living in Brazil, where the government keeps shutting down cultural programs. As we know, making a movie costs A LOT of money and where I live people are not willing to help, invest. I think that at the end of the day it takes a lot of passion to follow this career. But it's worth it. Someday I hope to move to São Paulo, the city here in Brazil where most of the movies are made. But my real dream, as everyone in this industry, is L.A. Maybe one day... :)
So cool to hear your experience and I agree 100%, the industry is really hard. You do have to have a lot of passion to follow this career! I hope one day you get to move to são paulo or LA as well, I wish u the best of luck!!💜✨
your videos about film school are so interesting and helpful!! i’m starting my last year of high school and I really want to work in the film industry so it’s great to hear the point of view of someone who went there!
All of your film videos are so helpful to me! I have a few 'safer' career ideas (I'm almost 16) but working on a film set is my ultimate dream! :) Could you do a video talking about jobs you've done and what they've involved? I did a summer course on filmmaking and what I loved was we all got rotated through the different roles so we got to try everything! I loved directing and being a DOP but I also really enjoyed both being a PA and helping with the editing which was so cool to find out. I live in the UK so I'm thinking of going to film school here but doing a year abroad in the US - the cost scares me a bit though 😅🙈 Hope you're doing well :) xxx
I did a video about jobs after film school, it’s on my Film Talk Playlist in the description! I did OPT for a year so I didn’t get to have as many jobs, which is why I made the video with my friend Maria who has worked in a lot of sets and productions since we graduated. The UK has amazing film schools, maybe you can find one that includes an exchange program abroad! Best of luck 💜💕
As a film student from Ecuador, very interesting to see how film schools are in the US. I actually find some things very similar. Love your videos Monika, and your room looks lovely 💛
Hey I start film school next week! This video was super interesting and insightful and I'm really excited to go. I would love to see you maybe talk about your personal goals and ambitions in film and how it's like being a directing student? Do you still have time to freelance/take jobs and how difficult was it for you to get jobs at first? :)
that's a good idea!! i can't work on sets or anything like that right now because i don't have a work visa (hopefully will get one in a near future, fingers crossed) but i've been doing some freelance editing/videography
I'm at a film school now, and I have networked and it's great. However, I have friends who work there who graduated from the same school and their success/job is the same as if they learned the same exact thing online. The only difference is the networking and the $80,000 bill they gained at school. So, I'm still conflicted. I'm happy I met who I have met so far, but if I'm exactly where I am now when I get out, I'll be financially disappointed.
these videos are really interesting and so well done! i'm currently in my 2nd year at film school, and i recently decided to start a similar series on my channel in which i talk about my film school experience, and your videos are giving me some inspiration
I love your videos! especially the ones about film school, they're so informative and my dream is to work in the film industry, tysm, also, ur so pretty!
In Germany the best film schools cost almost nothing (the government pays most). Students just have to pay around about 300 USD per year. Only the bad, private film schools are expensive here. But this schools have a very bad reputation.
I am going to start my MFA in film in LA next January (if everything goes right) and I am super excited! thanks for this video and for giving me a hope as an international student 🌸
Hey Monika...I've been a fan of yours and your videos since last year and subscribed from watching your first video..you actually inspired me to go to a film school and I am currently doing my second semester at a film In my country (South Africa)AFDA...Thank you for sharing your knowledge and I would honestly love to collaborate with you one day..you are truly an inspiration..

I’m studying Education and I really do love kids, but my real passion lies with film work, I want to become a director or a script writer, but I was too scared to apply for it. I don’t want to finish film school and then not get a job where with being a teacher I can get a job anywhere in the world. I live in South Africa currently
omg i have the same problem, but I'm planning trying out a film course next semester to see what that enviro is rlly like. I'm not quite sure what the diff between uni and film school is, but in uni, u can decide to do two majors. (what I might do)
Sophie P That’s cool, I hope you enjoy the film course. My University doesn’t really have anything with film only I can take a module Drama and Film studies as an elective, but it’s not a course.
i have the same problem!! i love working with kids and education in general but my real passion is towards film work and editing, can you explain what you chose and why, if you dont mind?

srsly tho. entering adulthood is so hard to decide what u gonna do in the future. for me, im currently doing 1st yr psychology (and a random geography major) and I'm planning on doing a diploma for teaching but i don't have a HUGE passion for that. instead, i decided to do a film course next semester to see what its rlly like to be in that area, I've always liked editing and if i truly like film in that course, i think i might change my geo major into film. ( but ill still do psych cuz i also enjoy the content) idk if that's a good idea, cuz they both kinda diff and I'm worried about future careers for film majors too...
I would like to major in film next year after a graduate high school and that’s because I was introduced to film my sophomore year (would’ve taken it this year, Junior, but I need foreign language) and I love editing just exploring processes and how things can be combined. Also since I’ve had that class just for the single year when I watch tv and they do over the shoulder shots I think about the 180 degree line now.
Film school for me was incredibly frustrating. It may have just been the school I went to. My professors were so arrogant and didn’t teach me anything. I get they’re supposed to be strict but it’s not even that. They would just gloat about how great they were and put you down personally just for being a student and inexperienced. Not to mention the exams were IMPOSSIBLE haha. One class for example I had to teach myself everything and when it came time to make my final film for the class (we had to make a film from his REALLY TERRIBLE screenplay. Basically a story about two college roommates chasing each other across campus or some shit haha) my professor got mad at me because I tried to do something creative with the cinematography and I let my actors improv a little bit to make their relationship seem more authentic. He wanted to me to go by his really HORRIBLE script word for word and not make any creative changes... Because if it wasn’t his, it wasn’t perfect. Literally his words. Even though all I did was literally just add some perspective shots and a LITTLE BIT of ad-libbing. By a little bit I mean like 3 extra lines. Most of the things he would “teach” us during class was just telling us what his favorite movies and favorite directors were and if your favorite movie or director was someone he didn’t like he’d go on and on about why they suck and you shouldn’t like them. That was the majority of my professors. There were a few nice ones here and there (mainly the writing professors) but the majority had an ego the size of the sun. 100% serious. That was my film school life. I legit almost gave up on my dream to become a movie director/screenwriter. But as Tarantino said “I didn’t go to film school, I went to films” so that’s what i’m doing. That’s why I have this channel, so I can review movies, occasionally make editorials and gush about what my favorite directors do well haha. It ain’t much right now because i’m not rich, I don’t have many followers, and i’m working with what I have but I love doing it regardless. Good luck on your dreams and thank you for this video!! I’ve been watching your stuff for a while now and your stuff is very entertaining!!:) keep up the great work!!
Awwww it's nice to hear your story. My best advice is from lady gaga 99 people can say no but all it takes is one person to say yes or something like that
Hi Monika, I'm in my last year of high school and really want to go to film school in the US as an international student but I'm aware the visas make it very difficult. What can you do after your one year of work after collage is up? I know I want to go its just such a big investment and I'm scared I will get sent back home with nothing to show for it. I love these videos btw :)
You can try to get a company to sponsor you. You can also go back to school and try to do another OPT (it has to be a higher degree, example if you did a bachelor's and then OPT, your next degree must be a master's in order to get a 2nd OPT).
Hi, Monika! New subscriber here! I’m currently in a fashion business school (did it as a safe/backup career choice) but I now realize that I want to really pursue in acting and film. I was nervous to say it to my parents. But since I’m already in a school of a different Industry (I’m majoring in Fashion Media though) is there any tips to still do my school but follow my admiration for acting/film? Thank you!
hi arly! fashion media sounds like a lot of fun! i think you can still pursue your degree while also maybe taking some acting/film courses, or even some online courses! you can also perhaps audition for some student films to build your acting reel and then go on some bigger auditions once you have that!
A little bit of Monika Thank you so much for the advice! I’ve been watching your videos and I’ve been in love with them! Can’t wait for more of your videos of your journey!💕😊
Great topic! We're all told as children, that without college we have no real future, and then we are tricked into getting student loans and causing 20+ years of financial stress for a piece of paper and ink. Employers just care about experience so you have to lie to them. Tell them what they want to hear. Besides the world has changed and there are a lot of ways to make a living today. I talk about it in my ebook. College Debt Slavery. Look it up or link on my channel banner ♥️
I really want to go to film school after my degree, especially for networking. I'm glad that you highlighted that. What kind of lighting that you use for your video?
hey!! im thinking of going to film school here in the philippines but the industry here isnt really that blooming and well known. my fam is not rich but is willing to give and support, so can you give tips if im going to be learning internationally?. also your videos are informative thank you
HI Monica, Thanks for the information its really help for serious people like me. I am going start my career in digitalfilm soon but I have a question I appreciate if you answer me. Should I go on campus or online which is more beneficiary as per learning. I know online is more convenient but for me to go on campus is like moving to another city and I have a job where I live right now. I think you got my point please share some advantages and disadvantages of online and on campus . Thanks
I want to go to film school i am 16 and i am a sophomore in high school. I want to be a director and screen writer. I wrote a script of my own this summer and i loved the whole experience. Any advice on moving to LA and getting into the film industry.
Say "Yes". I'm in a film school now and a producer I befriended from the top floor saw my short film, he liked it a lot and wanted to remake it with celebrities and a budget. I think the movie is okay, it's very compromised so it's not my best work/writing it was my first short. I said, "No, can I send you a new script I'm passionate about and maybe do something with that?" And he didn't like the script and now our thread is dead. I regret saying No. Even if I don't like the movie, in hindsight, I should've said Yes. If someone can make it put money in our pockets, just do let them. It's a shoe in the door. I kick myself in the butt every time I think about it and see him in the halls.
I speculate he didn't like the new script because it wasn't his genre. The short of mine he liked was Sci-fi, but the new script I sent was romantic comedy. I think I fucked up. I should've sent another Sci-fi one.
In all honesty, I think it was my ego. After he praised my film and told me his plans, my ego made me think "If this movie blows up, Ill be known for a movie I wrote I don't even like". So, I said no. That was pretentious of me and I'm paying for it now.
I have a question. What's your opinion on filmmakers who never went to film school? Likes does who started as an apprentice(hitchcock, cameron). To those who were self taught (Tarantino, pt anderson).
I wanted to ask something so I am applying this year for the film programme at Edinburgh Napier University and I was curious is there any possibility, later on, to connect with someone from the US in a way I let them know what I have graduated and what skills I have gained. I was wondering can you give me some advice about going to film school and what do you recommend others to keep in mind and you probably did not keep that in your mind while you were there at the film school if you get what I am saying. Also, love the video! Keep up with an amazing work
hey Klara! thank you soo much 💜 i LOVED the farewell! i don't know if i'll make a review of it but i thought was incredibly touching as well as funny. About your question, yes i do think you can connect with people from the US of course, especially online you can definitely send dms or emails to people and ask for advice or anything like that! for film school i think you should keep in mind that you can use all of their resources, such as film equipment, soundstages, etc. and you should take advantge of it. Create as much as you can!
@@cinemoni can you recommend me some web sites or pages I should check out for more conections?? Thank you so much dear keep up with an amazing work❤️💙 Love from Croatia and I am really happy that you have enjoyed The Farewell
Hello, just came across your video :D. I’m motivated to do a career change and go to film school. My ultimate goal is to work on film sets. How often would you say Job Openings become available for movie studios. I bet it is very competitive as well.
hi! i just watched your video about film school and what it's like and obviously, this video and i just have one question, i'm currently a junior in high school and i have to pick my courses for senior year next week and obviously i have to make sure i get all the prerequisites in, i really want to go into wedding and event videography snd i love to make montages and videos of trips that i take and im looking into a film program at one of my nearby universities, so would a film program help me get into wedding and event videography or should i look into other options/programs?
I think if you focus on weddings and events, you should better start working right now. In my opinion, this is what you can do without a film school. I started to shoot weddings and events at 17 years, and its easy to start there. Just shoot for free at first, maybe your friends are planning a wedding or an event. Go to some business events and meet people, dont be shy to tell them what you do, and ask people about do they need a video for their business, or maybe their friends do. I highly suggest to enroll in some online course focusing on business/event/wedding videos and it will give you exact directions about what and how to do to start making videos and money. I hope it helps a little, I`m actually thinking of going to film school too, but not sure i want it that much
I'm 14 almost 15 I come from a country whose film industry is very bad and i want to go to film school that one day i can improve mu country's film industry and also let the world know that my religion islam is not bad like how wastern media portrays it I'm a member of gen Z so i feel like its my responsilbily to spread positivity about my religion and country by pursuing my passion in life but i'n scared what if i l'm not able to make good films what if i just waste my time and my parent's money But i know nothing will be very bad as my god will protect me
HI there! Thank you for your video. I'm late to the party but I will be attending LAFS this november. I've been searching for apartments online but is there any recommendations you would make?
Chat Gunter is so old, when I went to work union sound jobs, union people had to make me unlearn some dumb tricks, like testing 9v batteries with your tongue... never do that... 9v are cheap... if you think they are expensive your brain needs to be checked.
Not necessarily but you can join theatre clubs and be introduced to the world of acting. I’m starting film school and also pursuing an acting career. Here’s to hoping 💕
A little bit of Monika thanks! I'm a sophomore in highschool really thinking about film school and I'm practically starting from nothing so your help is much appreciated!
Film School was not worth it... I could make a biweekly RUclips series hating on film school... the network was such b.s... networking lasts like a couple years then people get a real career and stop helping their network, cutting and burning your network is the most successful way to be, David Irving encourages and Jonathan Yi preaches it. You can just say you were never really friends with the NYU people who help you. The Dean, Antonio believes delinquents are the best artists and delinquents are like ex drug dealers who do not care about anyone but themselves.

Good luck on your dreams and thank you for this video!! I’ve been watching your stuff for a while now and your stuff is very entertaining!!:) keep up the great work!!
Awwww it's nice to hear your story. My best advice is from lady gaga 99 people can say no but all it takes is one person to say yes or something like that
If there's anyone who lives in New Jersey and into making short films, lets be friends !!
south jersey?
i’m only 13 😅
Great video and points made. Honestly I think is it worth it, is the wrong question to ask.
@@cinemoni Thanks! There's so little information about it all, it's so hard to know what to do ahhh.
This was very informative thanks!!!
Monika! How are you?! That's all lol. Great to see you regularly uploading though 🙌
i'm great! yes i've been trying to haha!
Thanks for this video! BTW I'm really interested in this topic)
💜💜!
I really want to go to film school after my degree, especially for networking. I'm glad that you highlighted that. What kind of lighting that you use for your video?
hey!! im thinking of going to film school here in the philippines but the industry here isnt really that blooming and well known. my fam is not rich but is willing to give and support, so can you give tips if im going to be learning internationally?. also your videos are informative thank you
This is really helpful, Thanks!
I'm 13 years old and I really like to go to film School but there's always something telling me to do multimedia arts or flight attendant:
same i would love to go to film school but i’m honestly worried about the cost and if i could actually get a job after
Nadia Mohammed same it looks so expensive and good film schools are abroad
@@incognitoincognito7500 if you don’t mind telling me, what are some good film schools ?
Yesenia De la cruz idk to be honest but the famous ones are usc, nyu, ucla
@@incognitoincognito7500 i want to go to NYU but it’s so expensive 😭
Thank you so much dear keep up with an amazing work❤️💙
Love from Croatia and I am really happy that you have enjoyed The Farewell
Any advices for scholarships? Not for film school only☺️
To be completely honest, film school is even better when you get a scholarship 😀

I'm a member of gen Z so i feel like its my responsilbily to spread positivity about my religion and country by pursuing my passion in life but i'n scared what if i l'm not able to make good films what if i just waste my time and my parent's money

Chat Gunter is so old, when I went to work union sound jobs, union people had to make me unlearn some dumb tricks, like testing 9v batteries with your tongue... never do that... 9v are cheap... if you think they are expensive your brain needs to be checked.
What if I just like to edit ? Videos
Lyla Lee tyyy

Best of luck, mate.
What should I study in order to become a screenwriter?
@@LylaLee3 didn't know that was a career, I thought one had to study cinematography first or something

I am wondering how did u get the money to get into film school?
whats PA? production assistant? it would be nice if you answer, thank you! 🖤
yeyyy first
🎬
You just jumped into talking about a P.A. but you didn't explain what a P.A. is. You should have done that first.
you are soo cute❤️
Is a getting a degree from a number 1 top university for film worth it to go
Which film school did u go to
Full Sail University in Florida!
Did you go to UCF?
Does Film school teches you how to act??
Not necessarily but you can join theatre clubs and be introduced to the world of acting. I’m starting film school and also pursuing an acting career. Here’s to hoping 💕
U did master?
What's a PA?
Production Assistant
A little bit of Monika thanks! I'm a sophomore in highschool really thinking about film school and I'm practically starting from nothing so your help is much appreciated!
Can you help me with what happens after the 1 year of work visa expires? Can these free lance jobs help you get a H1 B visa ?
Did you have to take general education classes?
i did only for a couple of semesters!
How do you create this look??
Colour grade?
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 exactly and it’s also called Lighting. If you know filmmaking, you would know that
Yes i wanted to know about the low key lighting. As well as greading
