So from what I’ve noticed about the ROG Ally, I’d say that what we’ve sold in our store (I work at a Best Buy in GA), for every 4 ROG Ally’s that get sold, 3 get returned… and we have over a dozen open-box units just sitting there collecting dust, and they’re ALL the Z1 extreme model. It’s gotten so bad that when a unit is returned now, we have to PRC it because we have too many in store. (To PRC an item is to send it to the product return center for processing. Once there they will either ship it to stores that don’t have any open-box items, or return it to the manufacturer directly.)
All that being said, from a personal standpoint, listening to both happy Ally users as well as disgruntled ones,
I would have to say that the Ally is a monumental failure.
Some of the returns are from ignorant users that don’t know how to use what they bought, so to them it automatically becomes garbage. Some returns were due to hardware failure (mainly Micro SD card slot issues). And some returns were from people who knew what they had, put it through its paces, and liked it when it was at its best (100% battery life at 35+ watts cranking out beautiful frames), but didn’t like armory crate and the overall windows experience. Lots of
People also complained about those incredibly weak and loose analog sticks too. I am one of them, they are not good.
I think ASUS made half of a good product. I think at most it should’ve been 1080p, I love the high refresh rate and the z1 extreme APU, but the product as a whole is just not there. I have spent some time with the steam deck and the UI is so much cleaner and easier to use, but the issue with that system is being stuck at 15 watts, and it’s a complete pain to play games that aren’t optimized for steam OS.
I think the perfect PC handheld is an APU from Ryzen that is a generation or two beyond what is currently available with a 1080p 7-8” 90-120hz refresh rate, and the biggest possible battery they can fit inside of it, running steam OS.
Oh, There is just no way Valve would allow PC game pass to run on the steam deck btw, they are able to sell the SD at a lower cost because they can subsidize that cost with game sales from steam. Allowing Microsoft to use game pass on their platform would severely undercut their bottom line to the point that it could possibly not make the steam deck hardware worth producing anymore, and that’s not good for anybody.
Fun show guy! Keep up the good work!

I agree with most of your points but I still enjoy mine. I got past most of the issues just from tweaking things inside Windows and Armory Crate, but I understand why other people would be put off by that. Even with the weird compatibility issues, I still prefer having Windows on my PC handheld instead of Steam OS, because I can use this as a desktop replacement. A couple more generations and handheld PC's will be in a much better spot, with better APU's giving more power and more efficiency/battery life. I also agree that the joysticks are not great, but I don't really notice it when I'm playing. I don't really think Asus needs to release an Ally 2 this year, unless they can significantly improve battery life.

    • @BygSii
      @BygSii 5 месяцев назад +1

they need to put a Ally 2 out sooner than later to fix all the issues with it, issues that can't be fixed with software updates. If they wait too long, it'll be forgotten about and passed up by everyone else. Lenovo legion go is in a different position, they don't have to put a second version out right away. Buttons don't stick, SD card reader doesn't fail, APU doesn't heat up to 95c all the time, battery life doesn't last only one hour no matter what setting it's on. The original Rog Ally had a bad launch with issues that couldn't be fixed. Z1 extreme version will be $399 by the end of summertime.

I think the world of handheld PCs will be like this. Valve is the one company who wants stability most of all, they have digital distribution and they are most interested in making a machine to access this platform and to that end they are not interested in mudding the water with hardware updates that happen too often.
For those customers who want the latest and most up to date performance and care less about the smooth experience that Valve provides they will opt for some Windows based handheld PC that's more powerful than the Steam Deck but less convenient and less user friendly.
This is fine, choose what you want. Ease of use or raw horsepower. Maybe even choose both if you want that too!

Valve only wants to sell games. Steam Deck, and any PC is just a tool to achieve this.
Valve is and will do the absolute minimum to achieve this goal.
As they've Saif many times Steam Deck isn't profitable.
      Don't misinterpret their motives.

I currently own a steam deck LCD and I'm very happy with it. I recently was able to try both the Rouge Ally and the Legion Go. I hated the ergonomics on the Ally, coming from the Deck, I hated the design and flat surfaces on the Ally, I also missed the extra 2 buttons. Said that ,I have a strong preference for the Legion Go, way comfortable than the Ally and better performance than my Deck, also the screen was really good and a better size than the Ally. I also agree with you guys having a gaming laptop it's completely irrelevant, you can use this windows machines as a replacement, and if I need to work just add peripherals. I'm selling my gaming laptop and stick to my Deck and soon Legion Go.

That's not really a realistic test for the OLED screen. Nobody is ever going to have a static image on a SD OLED for that long. It's a lot of off pixels vs some that are on which is not realistic.
And the result of this "test"will be pretty predictable. It will burn in, just as the Switch did in some tests other people did. Now, what I'm wondering is a realistic use case. For how long can I play de SD OLED before the performance metrics layer 2. That is the line of text displayed at the top of the screen "burn in"? While playing various games so the other pixels also get used of course.

In the game mode 'Sleep' settings will let you disable sleep when on battery but, yes pressing the button (in game mode) will probably still sleep it though. I'll have to play with it more tonight and see if these settings carry over from desktop mode but, I'm doubtful. In short, the option is already there just only in desktop mode for the time being. I'm sure they can add to game mode somewhere.

Has The Phawx seriously not heard of Red Magic or Asus RoG phones? Current gen gaming phones exist, I'm confused.
At that point it has to compete with phone + controller on the one end, which the handhelds already do and Red Magic & Asus on the other, for costing a lot more in terms of regulatory and carrier bullshit and smaller unit sales.
Sure that's a lot of market milking in a mobile being $1200+ instead of the $600, which wouldn't have happened if people didn't buy into it. On the one hand, the Odin 2 reveals how much people over pay for a 8 Gen 2 phone, on the other hand, who is going to buy a Ayn phone that costs $500-2000 more than a red magic or Asus RoG that their carrier won't let on their network? Find it what it costs and run the crowd campaign. Best case scenario you actually get a phone out there that's 4-5 years out of date, to all the backers. Most likely you have to apologize because nothing gets made.
Also, the regulatory & carrier hoops for phones free an effing nightmare.
Ayn is Chinese? So if they made a phone, the CCP would get up their *** & then they could face a US ban that meant they can't run android.
I understand Ayn not going there

So much so that I am ordering the Oled version. Love my windows handhelds as well, use them for what SD struggles with. However, after using the Steam and interacting with Steam OS, I can honestly say windows is terrible on these handhelds. Windows actually updated, replaced the AMD GPU drivers with its own and my games stopped working. I fixed it and it only happened on my Legion GO, but that is only one of many issues I have delt with using windows. Thinking about trying out Atom(a slimmed down version of Windows made for gaming )but its not official and I have not heard too much as far as good or bad. As far as favorite handhelds, it's between the Ally and SteamDeck. Cant wait to check out the Oled version.

1: Windows 10 used to have an amazing tablet mode, if you had a touch screen it used to just add this little toggle in the notification area to switch to tablet mode.
It wasnt perfect but it was WAY better than just straight windows.
2:You can run the steamOS interface on windows, just set steam to launch in big picture mode
2A: the problem is that many of these handhelds are starved of RAM, even at 800p minimum settings i'll be bumping up against 16GB of RAM, which means i have to drop out into windows and close any launcher not needed for that game. If these handhelds had a minimum 24GB, but preferably 32GB+ you could just let all the launchers/ download managers run, ad add everything, other than windows games, as not-steam games(maybe there's a way but i dont have enough to care to find a way to access those folders without breaking the game install)
3:Windows is bloated yes, but its not as bad as many people think mostly just eating into the horribly small RAM, much of the problem i've ran into specifically with the Z1 line is that the OEMs have broken windows ability to control the CPU speed with power plans. The biggest boost i've ever been able to squeeze out of a mobile APU has been to either turn off turbo by setting the power plan to a maximum of 99%, or drop it down even further to say 50% clocks, donating that budget to the GPU. I have a 7940HS where the GPU can go from 1900, to 2400 just by flipping the windows power plan, but on the Lenovo Legion Go, i have to go into the BIOS to change it, which is a problem becaause some of my games are single core, and dont go much past 60FPS be it 800p or 1600P, because the CPU is holding bakc the GPU, sure i like that the GPU is at 800Mhz and its only using like 12w at the package, but i'm plugged into the wall, and have a 1600p144hz screen, i'd like it to run up to 2400 on the GPU and bounce around between 90 and 120FPS at 1600p(where it is running out of RAM.
3A: It looked like Lenovo planned to leverage this by having a switch in their OSD between windows performance, balanced, and power saver power plans. I was excited when i first saw this, as i have always needed to use a shortcut to get to control pannel, then navigate to power plans to change this, but something broke what these plans are allowed to do, and now these buttons do basically nothing despite my performance plan being set to 25% CPU clock speeds, its still ramping up to 4.4Ghz on all plans.(performance is set to 25% to allow nearly all 30w to go to the GPU, IIRC full load at 25% on my 7940HS is only using like 7w all core)

I REALLY hope Switch 2 is BC with joycon now that Mobapad M6 HD exist. They're SOOOOO GOOD. I never wanna play with any other controller again. HD Rumble, NFC, Omron switches, dpad swaps with rocker and is best I've used in my life, swappable panels with round or octagonal gates, digital or analog triggers, swappable analogs, swappable buttons, rear mappable buttons, HALL Effect analogs, anti friction rings, gyro, separate wireless, 17 hr battery, turbo, macros... and ergonomic as heck. Makes Switch feel like a lighter, thinner Steamdeck

I still wish there was a test where there were three 120 hz or144 hz screens then one 120hz with VRR screen and see how many people can pick out the one that's VRR. I'm willing to bet the majority (over 25% since 25% would be random guess) couldn't pick out which one was VRR. I have a VRR OLED and a older gaming laptop at 144 hz and don't notice the difference. Of course VRR or 144 hz is smoother than 60 hz as 16 ms difference is more noticeable than 7ms.

Two monitors, both unlocked framerate, one with VRR off and the other on, you will 100% be able to tell a difference. It’s basically screen tearing vs no screen tearing. And Vsync doesn’t work the same and doesn’t work good in every game and frame limiters are dumb cuz if you could be getting 95 fps at times, why limit it to a number lower just to smooth it out when VRR can do it for you

I'm not really sure how game mode works so it may require Valve to enable such a feature. I'm sure they could do it quite easily if they wanted to however.

It literally went on sale this week at $200 off (CAD), but I just ordered a Steam Deck OLED instead. its disrespectful to us who just bought the ALLY, Its a crazy beast and if they put a new one out, its still going to have the same customer base... This device is a beauty and people don't seem to understand how insane it is to run PC GAMES on a handheld. Regardless I think they should allow ALLY Z1 Extreme owners to come back to store and receive an "upgrade" to the Z2, even with an additional cost or a trade in. Because they entered this market, they can't tell people "hey we made you the best handheld" and then say 3 months later "hey we made an even better one". Regardless, I love this device and it's flawless in performance, it really is a beast. ONLY thing I would ask for is better joy-sticks Mann. other than that if you don't like the ROG ALLY get a switch lol, this is a masterpiece to me.

When it comes to input issues the handhelds have you MUST have more attention to software than you'd need with a desktop or laptop.

The problem with annual life cycle like Ayaneo does is the fact that you can't expect proper, industry standard performance from your OEM's whole portfolio. Just like how you can only look at one direction at a time as human being, the OEM will focus on the newer devices because that's the future and they have to promote it. Your device will be an afterthought. If these devices eventually switch to SteamOS, this will cause great stability issues as there are more devices to optimise and possibly with different hardware choices too now that Intel is making a comeback with handhelds. Windows in itself wouldn't cause that much problem I think since it's good/bad for everyone and there really is no way of fixing it without Microsoft doing it themselves.
If you look at it from a console perspective, you can see that not even 1 life cycle is good enough for the industry anymore as we got mid gen refreshes in the last gen and we are anticipating a refresh again this gen but there is still a lot of time between each upgrade. Enough for users to understand what their devices are capable of and enough for them to prepare to buy the mid gen because to them, it is an investment. There is only one way to play their games in their respective ecosystem on a hardware level.

yea the ROG ally is in all asus booths in indonesia so no surprisde that it was seen in bali... but it doesn't change that the steam deck is outselling it even more in indonesia than the ROG ally and the lenovo legion go combined...
they just buy it from others who brought them in bulk into indonesia legally.... its ridiculous how often stores online in indonesia keeps having the stock of steam deck sold out every few weeks and they come in huge batches of stocks in hundreds...
while the ally and legion go is usually just stagnating... the amount people selling those windows handhelds is also ridiculous and they are being sold way cheaper than brand new as if they want to get rid of them...

    • @FreakyDudeEx

i think the main reason is the windows handheld experience was just way worse than the steam deck and the people in indonesia is more about the ease of use for the product...
rather than the performance a product can provide, they prefer someone from the modding community locally has figured out a solution to the problem or someone was able to monetize the solution that was compiled from across the interne and make the experience great....

I think I watched a lot of movies about the handhelds recently... like, most of them. I was leaning towards buying an MS handheld just because the ability to run games from different shops like steam, epic, ms, gamepass etc. is really very important factor but there is something that is even more important than that - the maturity and designed durability of the device and the ecosystem around it. I considered both Asus and Lenovo but I have found people who share over the internet comments about the build durability. With Asus there's the issue of burning the sd card and drifting joycons - that's not really good. With Lenovo I've seen on the reddit topics where people throw in photos of their beautiful screens which have bright spots and for many people that is in the same location. So MS handhelds are a NO go for me for now as I do not want to end up with a damaged device or a device that requires any contact with the manufacturer for RMA or worse scenarios if problems arrive after the guarantee is no longer there. Steam deck on the other hand seems to have the build quality in a place where the entire device seems to be built to last for a decade. It seems that the MS handhelds are just in a phase where they are testing the market but also the devices and unfortunatelly from my perspective it looks like these companies although they do their best to satisfy the dream of portable gaming, their devices gonna face issues for which the end user will need to pay eventually. Steam deck feels more like a Nintendo level products. Not sure where the Asus and Lenovo are but it's not even close to SD.

There are way too many Windows handhelds on the market now. Windows is so cumbersome and annoying to deal with too.
I hope Valve finally releases a generic SteamOS install so we can see more machines using that instead because it is a much more seamless user experience for a true, casual audience who doesn't want to deal with any desktop shenanigans. I'm not a casual gamer but I do use my Steam Deck as one. The only thing I've used desktop mode is to install Proton GE and EmuDeck.
For my PC gaming I only use Steam and change the version of Proton I use if a game doesn't run well. If a game doesn't run at all then I just don't play it. And I never, ever bother with other launchers. Overall, this has made my gaming experience way more enjoyable than on my Windows desktop.

yeah but at the end it doesn't really matter for asus because they make money only once when they sell their console to one customer and also they don't really make a lot out of it. After this one sale they don't have nothing else to make money from unlike Valve, Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft cause they make money after with games sales and subscriptions that's why if Microsoft not going to make handheld os they will struggle in handheld market in a long term run because their sales already not too good and a lot of returns(talking about ally and legion go)

IMO if you’re marketing something as a handheld with controls, you should assume the same things that a console would release like. Windows or not that’s how these are marketed, they should be released the same way. Things shouldn’t be put out year after year, it’s just not consumer friendly.

Two things I’ve learned over building and owning multiple gaming PCs and laptops for over 25 years… I never buy Asus or MSI hardware that strictly isn’t a GPU, motherboard or monitor. I’ve owned more things than I’m proud to admit, built dozens of high end pcs, laptops and many other items… going outside of those three things you’re just asking to have issues with longevity, quality control, customer service, support. I know these guys are primarily from the console world and going to just talk about whatever the steam deck competition is like it’s all the same. But as someone who knows both worlds, I just don’t look at the Ally and the upcoming Claw on the same level as the Legion Go or Steamdeck. I just see future Ewaste. I implore everyone to do research before giving those two companies your hard earned dollars.
