    I genuinely was in disbelief on how some of y'all are saying you have to remind yourself its an OLED because every time I turn it on I look at the screen around the logo and think its crazy that everywhere else on the screen it looks like the screen is off... its so cool to me and then playing Persona 5 on this screen I couldn't get over how much the colors popped. But I also am just obsessed with every other thing about this compared to the LCD. The improvement to the trackpads makes me want to use them even more now! Absolutely love this device.

    It's funny how quickly you do get used to an upgrade. I take for granted my Switch OLED's screen until I move back to my LCD Steam Deck. Then I appreciate the Switch the next time I use it. Once I get my OLED Deck, I won't have anything to make me appreciate either. I will have to keep my LCD deck around just to boot it up from time to time as a reminder. Or just turn on my 3DS and be reminded how things used to be, haha.

    The question of "Steam Deck, console or PC?" It's an interesting one, because the PC gaming experience is becoming more console-like in many ways, while the console gaming experience is becoming more PC like. So what's the distinction then? I think the only one left is the openness of the platform. With PC you can use the device how you want and you're not restricted in any way. With consoles you are. Therefore Steam Deck is a PC. A very console-like PC, but a PC nonetheless.

    HDR technically shouldn't look much different than SDR for most things on screen, but the color gamut and contrast is expanded and smaller highlights can get much brighter. HDR 1000 doesn't mean the whole screen gets 1000nits, just highlights. Also, the menus look washed out because they still use SDR. Only the game itself is HDR. You can minimize the blowout by adjusting the HDR/SDR brightness balance in the Windows HDR settings.

    • @_mattbailey
      @_mattbailey Год назад

      There's a huge difference between HDR and SDR on streaming services like Netflix. I tried saving some money by downgrading my Netflix plan, but after having been spoilt by their HDR streams I couldn't handle the washed out SDR image, it was absolutely awful 😅. That said, I have an Xbox One X which supports HDR. And while it does look fantastic, I agree that SDR also looks great, so maybe it's a video game 'thing'? Perhaps games are, by their very nature, more vibrant and constrasty than movies/TV shows, making it less obvious... Interesting, I'd not really thought about it before...

  • @chengong388
    @chengong388 Год назад +1

    OLED's infinite contrast advantage only comes into play when there's no reflections what so ever, otherwise the reflection will make your black pixels not black anyway. So if you have high end LCD it won't look very different except in a pure dark room.

    Thats why i love this refresh. Its not such a change in features that people who choose to stick with the LCD model will be missing out on anything essential except maybe battery life and aesthetic looks (incl me if i change my mind about getting the oled)
    in the meantime whilst im still with my lcd im still happy and Os3.5 has made color much better looking especially in borderlands 3 which i have been sinking tonnes of hours into doesnt look washed out like before. Im getting the oled for the battery bump up and the bigger screen because i really do like the updated qualities of the oled, screen size and bezel reduction especially.
    And hopefully those who stick with lcd can respect the decision of people who choose to buy the oled and not be salty as i have seen in some forums and those who get the oled will also respect the decision of those who choose to stick with their lcd decks

    I really didn't realize that HDR is still seen as this weird thing that does nothing for many people. For me it's the single greatest increase in visual fidelity ever, and without performance cost. But without a good standard protocol that is accepted by everyone, I guess we are still in the HDR stone age. For movies it's easy now, it's Dolby Vision. But we need a good hdmi standard for that for gaming. That means that currently, where you never know which games supports what or not, turn ON tone mapping. Internet experts will scream at you that "it's not accurate!!!!!", but without any tone mapping, it's basically not worth using hdr in games at all. In Alan Wake 2 for example, it looks outright amazing, especially in all those twilight scenes, where stuff looks really dark. In a lot of other games it just gives the image so much more depth. SDR is basically done to look like printed colors, a picture, HDR looks like a window to a scene.

We always try to stay away from fanboyism which is tough at times especially in general comments. With that being said I've had the steam deck since launch and wanted the thing to be oled from the start. I got the oled model news and wanted oled model immediately. I considered the Ally and Legion GO. But there's things I like about the steam deck that keep me from investing in those other ones. 1. Valve is a gaming first company. 2. Steam is the one that don't run windows. 3. Steam deck has the console like nature feel. I just think your budget and what you enjoy the most is where you should play. For me I just like the price and ecosystem of steam deck. I'm expecting one day Valve will work out anti cheat software in linux and it will be a no brainer for me.

    • @airjohnpro
      @airjohnpro Год назад +4

      But they don’t sell two of the same storage where your only choice is the glass. You either want 512GB or 1TB storage. If you are at all concerned about it, buy the 512GB model.
      For example, I only want the Limited Edition case so I didn’t have a choice.
      And this isn’t the first time they offered etched glass, so nothing new to be discussed.

      I have a matte hdr monitor that I use on my gaming PC and I hate that the colours are washed out. If that’s something that would annoy you, go glossy. It’s not even a debate. Glossy is better for contrast.

    • @bnr32jason
      @bnr32jason Год назад +6

      @@airjohnpro and that's a bad thing. So if you want a LE or 1TB, you have to get the etched glass screen which hurts quality. I ordered the 512GB because it was the only one without etched glass. So Valve saved me money, but a worse quality screen shouldn't be forced on people who want more storage or a special colorway.

It just leads to too many vocal collisions, and I think it would be too awkward to implement some kind of formal turn-taking system. I also think 55 minutes is the perfect length (broadcast TV formula)

  • @alyx4436
    @alyx4436 Год назад

    Well, about the fan. Valve definetly thought the fan was an issue, becasue they changed the fan curve and also released silent revisions that changed the fan. It actually became roulette for a while whether or not you got the quiter fan. Also, when you live in a rural area where the apparent noise levels of the area (essentially the noise level that you can't specifically hear because you adjust to it when you move to a new area) are much much lower, the fan noise can stand out a lot more.
    I do also apprecieate Russ's take though where he likes the sound of the machine at work. Like I kind of like that about my PC sometimes like the sound equates to how powerful my PC is lol
    But then it can affect my relaxation if its too bad like the original model PS4 that sounded like it was getting reeady to fly out of my window and off to the moon when just looking at the map in God of War.

  • @Daxiongmao87

    in case it wasnt mentioned, the reason why we feel microphone placenement is important, is because of something you or rich arent considering. if you put the mic at where YOU would hear it, that audio then gets played through my speakers and im most likely not placing my speakers direcrly into my ear. so realistically, if youre providing us with a sound test, you need to consider that most people will have different audio setups. its probably best for you to reproducee xactly what the hardware is producing vs what your ear-distanceis.

    The LCD was a huge problem for me on the og Steam Deck. I know it sounds dramatic but hear me out. As someone with a Switch OLED, I found myself playing most of my games on that despite loving everything else about the Deck. The matter of fact was, that most of my games looked better and were more portable on the Switch. I only grabbed my Steam Deck for very select titles, which was not how I initially intended to use it.
    The Deck OLED is just an instabuy for me. All the other bonuses are just that, bonuses. The simple fact was that with the LCD was preventing me from using it. There are drawbacks to the Switch too, and I do very much dislike those flaws, but man that screen is just wow. I have Enter The Gungeon on both Switch and Steam. I really wanted to play it on deck but man, maybe its the popping colours on the OLED panel but it was felt like much more of a dopamine hit whereas on the Deck LCD, it felt kind of bland, boring.
    The screen was the deck's only drawback, and it was a big one. If you were to nitpick you might say battery life. They have now gone beyond fixing these issues and more. It is the perfect refresh to the current line. So yeah, I am eagerly awaiting my Steam Deck OLED.

    What gets me about the Portal is that it's just a highly restrictive tablet. If you wanted to stream your PS5 to a tablet with a telescopic controller attached, you could have done that years ago when the PS5 released. Right now there's a decent Walmart tablet for 150 bucks and gamepads with attachments are available for around that same price so there we are. But then of course, we can use bluetooth, use a web browser, and stream from anything else that isn't a PS5 and cloud gaming as well.
    The attitude of 'But I want a seamless experience, I don't want to go through a setup' is also problematic because it is what causes Sony to not care and not give us a seamless Android or Linux app for streaming in the first place. If we reward them with 200 bucks for not giving us a seamless Linux app, then things will never change

  • @jinx20001
    @jinx20001 Год назад

    i think when talking about the screens, the advantage of OLED is obvious but it really really becomes obvious in a dark room, like so much better than any LCD its a joke, you cant even see the edges of an OLED display in a dark room and the impact that has on your viewing experience is huge because the image looks as if its floating in front of you, like you can reach out and touch it and thats where i think you realize how incredible OLED displays are... in somewhat good light the impact of that display is reduced and next to a good LCD that LCD looks a lot more competitive in comparison. But then there is all of the smaller upsides, the pixel response time on OLED is phenomenal but you only notice that in games with darker trees or something that may ghost or smear on movement and that is lessened anyway on IPS but you try an average VA panel with darker greens and my god its a stark reminder how damn good OLED is. We do have a remarkable ability to adjust and adjust very quickly though, if you have a legion go and dont have the OLED next to it or know how to really find the advantages of that OLED then you will in all likelihood be very very happy with a screen like that on the GO because its just a great display, that cant really be said about the LCD deck which clearly has problems producing deeper color, reds always look dark orange on that thing.
    With all that said though, i promptly sold my rog ally on the deck OLED release and ordered the OLED, ive used a LG C1 oled for 2 years or so and absolutely like was said the honeymoon period has worn off, i have forgotten how good it actually is but i know how to remind myself, dark room, ori, HDR on... no visual gaming experience like it.

    16:50 So to try and help you understand HDR a little better... With SDR we are limited to 0-100 nits in terms of brightness in a scene. You can make the screen brighter (so 300-400 nits or crank your brightness even higher like 700-800 nits). HDR on the other hand allows content creators to master their content to be 0-1000 nits. Or 0-4,000 nits. Or even 0-10,000 nits. Basically you can have content be extremely dark and extremely bright at the same time. That is simply impossible with SDR only allowing 0-100 nits. Obviously displays are no where near 10,000 nits yet and that will only be used for peak highlights like the sun or a camp fire. Most of the scene would be aiming for a much lower nit value just like SDR content. Also by enabling HDR you move to the Rec. 2020 color space instead of sRGB so the ability to display more colors goes waaaaaaay up.
    OLED TV + Planet Earth II UHD Bluray is absolutely incredible looking. As for games Ratchet and Clank or Spiderman have excellent HDR implementations.. many other games do not. It's really hit or miss. A game like RDR2 just straight up looks better in SDR imo. So game developers have to be paying close attention to that pipeline while the game is being developed and just slapping it on at the end doesn't turn out great (Starfield being the latest victim of garbage HDR).

    Fan noise for me is a factor when it is ramping up and down over and over. Steady fan noise is much more acceptable up to a certain volume. Same on my desktop. I'd rather have a low to medium constant fan sound then a fan that is going up and down from low to medium....

    Hey Gentlemen, love the info you guys provide us! I have an observation about the Steam Deck OLED that I haven’t heard addressed. Have any of you had an issue using the OLED plugged in with something other than the AC adapter provided? I’ve attempted to use two different UGreen adapters, 60w and 100w, but regardless which one I use the OLED runs down to 0. Dead! Usually without warning. Your thoughts?

    The price of the portal just absolutely doesn't make sense for what you get. If they'd had PS4 remote play and PS Plus streaming too, that'd be completely different.

  • @3picRespawner
    @3picRespawner Год назад

    The PS Portal is redundant. Sony already has remote play apps for most mobile phones and tablets, and windows. They need to release a native app for Linux (e.g. Steam Deck), but it's still available there through Chiaki.
    Through a similar discussion format with my friends we've come up with a wishlist that would have made it worth it.
    - PS Plus catalog streaming
    - PS4 and older native gaming / emulation (upscaled maybe?)
    - WiFi 6E would have been great for increased stream quality
    E.g. handheld + streaming machine

      Yeah this was something I thought too. You don't "have" to go into desktop mode if all your games are supposed and in steam. But if they aren't or aren't supported you have to go into desktop mode a lot and it's definitely more tedious than just the mild initial setup you need to do in windows where you download hhc or Riva and set steam to launch on boot or use play nite and never have to see the desktop basically ever

    Great video ! Couple of things , upload speeds are very important , download speeds need to be above 1 gig , bandwidth is a problem , can’t have anything downloading in the background on your ps5 as it will drop the quality of the stream . Also unplug the HDMI cable so it won’t send audio and video signal . All these things will give you a great experience .

    The problem with this discussion is you all obviously like oversaturated and inaccurate screens that are displaying oversaturated colours in the incorrect space. In this scenario you won’t like an OLED since generally they are built for accurate colour reproduction - which is why valve have added the sRGB colour option as this is accurate colour space for games. It’s easily and without doubt the best screen in any of these handhelds, better than the switch OLED and a generation better than the legion go or ASUS rog ally…but if you just want oversaturated brightness then frankly the screen doesn’t matter so much.

    The idea of the PS Portal actually does not bother me I think its fine as an accesory but it has design faults. The Wii U GamePad from like 2012 was able to stream directly from the console to the pad with very little input lag and no need to connect to the router. Apparently the reason that the Portal cannot do this, its because the PS5 would need an extra Wi-fi transmitter built in. The Wii U has 2 wifi transmitters, 1 for the Internet and one for the GamePad. The PS5 only has 1. What makes this hilarious though, is that the PSVR2 would also have benefitted greatly from this. So I think it is lack of foresight in the architecture of the PS5. Sorry Mark Cerny.

    My biggest problem with the deck was the power. I used it alot for emulation and alot of games especially ps3 wouldn't run well without a ton tweaks. The ally has literally run everything I threw at it effortlessly! If this oled is more powerful then I'd consider it. I'm more leaning towards the legion go for new handheld purchase. The portal isn't even a thought! That thing is trash!

    • @Hornet135
      @Hornet135 Год назад

      PS3 emulation is something that still requires a pretty strong CPU even on desktops, so it’s not unexpected that the deck wouldn’t emulate ps3 great.

      Yea I hear u. Like I said the rog ally so far as run every game I've thrown at it nearly perfect. I think the deck for what it is, is absolutely amazing. I just can't justify for myself getting the oled without having some sort of power boost. I'm even having trouble justifying the legion go. I'm probably gonna hold off and see what the deck 2 or ally 2 has to offer.

    The earbuds new audio technology that's what they are priced that way, they sound better then most to any earbuds at $200, it's more for gaming, too big to go out with them, if you want the same quality with the other bells and whistles they have other options for $300+
