One thing not mentioned about armory crate is the ability to set tdp per game so that way you don't have to manually change the tdp every time launching different titles.
I was like, "Rich is interviewing Tom Segura!!? LOL
See you at my show in Portland!
@@NerdNest keep it high and tight
😆
I would gladly give up having something light weight for more battery life and more ports!!! Yes 100 more grams for 2x battery.
Me not. I primarily use mine plugged in on the couch at home. Weight and comfort is much more important to me. But I’m probably the minority. The weight and grip is one big factor I prefer Ally over Steam Deck.
Sooooo, a gaming laptop?
Came across the nerdnest recently and love listening in during my drives.
I just got a win mini 2024 which has the same display as the ally, it really is good enough. My Deck OLED is great for color and contrast but it stutters more than ide like. VRR really smooths that out which is perfect for low powered devices. If its between oled and vrr, then keep the VRR display for sure.
Animal Well is cool so far, great puzzles.
It's a move in the right direction. Looking forward to the ROG Ally 2 Oled w/ Strix Point.
Rich saying “oh, goodnight kiddo” to his child at the end of the podcast (not YT) just made my night. It was cute. ❤
there are meaningful benefits to going hall effect sticks, they do not wear out at all as there is no direct contact points, it works with one magnet floating over another with no contact, the only way they wear out is if the magnets lose their magnetization which takes 100 years plus. traditional sticks actually have contact and wear. hall effect sticks do require power also so battery life will be reduced albeit perhaps not noticeably. the biggest issue i had with ally sticks were they were very light with little resistance and the toppers would become loose requiring you to remove them and put tape around the stem to make the topper fight tightly. So they absolutely needed to revise the stick design. Hall effect would have been the natural go to but not so bad if not... especially as hall effect sticks were really not that compatible with rog ally thanks to the hall effect triggers causing interference.
Over the m.2 there was a black heat shield plastic thing. That was it. Though the rotation of the m.2 required an adapter to get in an 2280 without modifying the case. Also, there was more space for battery in original Ally.
The thing with the two sd cards is not about more storage. It is about a) copying from one to another and b) when booting from sd card you can access an other. It reminds me old PCs with A: and B: drives.
Glad I checked my notifications and seen your video
Wish you well with recovery
Loved this format. Do it again sometime! Honestly this sounds the most compelling Ally has been to me if it all comes together. But can’t afford more than my Deck in this economy.
I’ve cracked it: the new Asus handheld will be the MS handheld Xbox
I listen to this podcasts on Mondays and all of a sudden this one took me a while to realize its not monday today 😂 bonus❤
ill get it if it has 2x battery, ill be able to leave the battery bank at home. R.I.P all the rog ally battery mods lol.
It was the steam deck oled had a cover for the ssd from what I remember and there was a cable attached to it that people recommended not to remove you you had to awkwardly try and get the ssd out while trying to push the cover to the side
crazy how 24 hours later everyone isnon market place selling Z1 extremes for 350-450 bucks now , litterally flooded everyones trying to get ready lol , but honestly if i find a mint z1 e at like 300 bucks i might just grab that and ignore the X inthat that drops in prices , honestly past few years i been buying everying 6 months to a year after release , prices and updates are always in abetter place too
Feel better soon! :) love your podcasts and videos!!
Feel better soon bud....thanks for all the awesome steam deck/ handheld gaming vids
I use this podcast when I need to take a nap 😴😴😴😴
Ouch.
@@NerdNest lol. It's a compliment
I'll pass on it. Was on the OG Ally when it came out, had the Micro SD issue, gave it to my brother & jumped on the Legion Go and never looked back... had to use some software to address the finickiness of Portrait display, and set the resolution to 1080 with an aspect ratio of 16:9 to make it more standard + give myself a bigger performance headroom by rendering less onto the screen... the bigger battery + faster RAM + built-in kickstand + removable controls to make a video watching/work-related tablet with such a nice smaller low-profile form factor & with a 3D printed joycon-like spine... yeah I just can't consider the ROG Ally X... ESPECIALLY if there's no built-in kickstand, one of the rare things that the Legion Go did that no other device on average has, and a really good Kickstand at that too.
I think I'll have to wait for a Legion Go 2, and hope they don't nerf any of its uniqueness. Although VRR with a true landscape 16:9 screen would be preferred to avoid small annoying incompatibilities you have to tweak around. Hoping for a 32GB RAM upgrade on it, and the Z1 Extreme is nice... but if they're going to stay around the same generation just put a Standard 7840U instead so we don't have to wait for this often late/delayed VGA drivers that always have to approved and go through Lenovo/Asus... just have mainstream drivers that are never late and that all AMD-based hardware gets same day... keep it simple... it's pretty much the same chipset, also larger battery still + 2280 NVMe form factors would be a huge plus that would make me jump from Legion Go 1 to Legion Go 2.
In short: 7840U/8840U instead of Z1 or just better APU with general drivers, Bigger Battery, 2280 NVMe & 32 GB of RAM are my biggest priorities and selling points if keep everything else the same when going from a Legion Go 1 into a Legion Go 2... beyond that OLED/Same True Full 100% RGB screen with VRR & Landscape... but not as much of a priority because software can help me there, or mitigate it a bit. Don't remove Kickstand, Don't remove detachable controls & Keep the TWO USB4s (or add more), Keep the Hall-effect sticks... these are a MUST going from Legion Go 1 to Legion Go 2. Also trackpad, can't forget about that one... touchscreen, doesn't exactly behave like an actual mouse or trackpad, so we should have both... especially on the go if you have to deal with PC OS finickiness.
With a cane Bill can be on the intro of Family Guy now.
The original ROG Ally had 1 USB 3.2 port. An upgrade being USB4 would be nice- two of them like the Legion Go would be better.
I mean that's the dream isn't it. EGPU support without proprietary connectors? But would ASUS do that? Remains to be seen.
I just bought Popeyes perfect timing hoping the ally x haven't heard a thing but I think it's a refresh or something better battery maybe OLED and vrr idk.
The size and weight of the ally are two of my favourite things about it when compared to the LeGo and the Deck. I guess if they could cram more battery in there I’d be ok with it being a bit heavier but if they increase its size that’s a hard pass from me.
I doubt they will change the footprint, but its going to be thicker.
80Wh battery would be huge. And heavy! If they still use Z1Extreme that will be nice but I’m waiting rather for a Z2 chip that has more RDNA3 CUs. Like 20 that would be awesome, reduce CPU clocks and maybe even remove 2 cores to stick to the 25W power budget. Dreaming
This is now a 1 year old chip and I think to charge the same retail as the ally was when it first came out would be the most reasonable price. Any more than that I’m really not sure
Shadow drop for this device would 100 percent be fine based on what we got from the verge.
We're both hobbling around on canes today. I just had a pain shoot up my back in the morning. Your cane is prettier than mine though. 🥺
Feel better soon!
@@NerdNest Thanks. You too. 😁
Get well soon 🌹
I’m just waiting for the rog ally price to drop more 😊
actually i love my steamdeck oled with windows.... surprisingly its very functional since the wifi drivers required is just a generic one since they use what every other laptops used for the wifi and bluetooth... its just that the bluetooth is being weird in windows because its windows so valve probably needs to make a custom driver for it... other than that, everything in windows 10 works fine with steamdeck oled.... its the horrible windows experience with a handheld... so yea i dualboot it because i can actually use windows if i need to do work with my steamdeck...
Asus is not Roxy Andrews, they're not here to make it clear.
Kudos to them Mawmaw, for battery-ing.
I'm currently wondering if I am going to get any more drag race bingo out of a Nerd Nest video. I'm only 16 minutes in!
Needs x2 battery for me to consider.
They'll probably stop selling the non Z1 Extreme version and just have the Z1 Extreme and the X SKUs.
Forget Amoury Crate or Xbox app, what would really help is if Microsoft pulled their head out of their ass and developed Xbox OS for the hardware manufacturers
I think with the ROG Ally its a lot more risky to shadow drop seeing as ASUS don't fully facilitate the distribution of the product. Shadow drops are typically online store exclusives or digital purchases, I think the device needs more traditional marketing. The live stream was a big mistake. They even doubled down on their damage with adding ROG Ally 2 in the thumbnail so I am not surprised people were disappointed.
NICE! ASUS click baited us lol 2sd cards and 2 usb4 would NUTZ!
Are they naming the device ROG Ally X because it's the next XBOX handheld?
give me more battery
i bought the rog and the batter was so bad glad oled steam deck got me through
That's what I did, I dislocated my patella and messed up my meniscus I'm going for surgery soon.
So sorry to hear that, hope surgery goes well!
Me too, I'm just glad to know I get to get this done. I've been off work for over 6 months due to this 😅. Your content is awesome, I reply like you guys energy. And I wish you a speedy recovery.
My assessment is that had they not screwed up with the SD slot fiasco, they never would have released the Ally X in the first place. Clearly they need to stop manufacturing inherently faulty units, but they can't just release a new model with ONLY the SD slot moved/fixed. They had to include some extras on top of that. Of course this only applies if the X completely replaces original production, so I'm probably wrong.
The difference in weight between steam deck LCD and OLED is around 30 gram.
This new ally sounds like a 1,100usd handheld...
Woof, that would hurt.
I like the name, X... But then I'm gen X 😅
Is Ally 2 out this year or is it just X this year?
I'd assume just the X
Yeah that's what I thought aswell after this announcement.
Can't wait for z2 extreme handhelds
Hope its zen 5 and rdna 4
goodluck with battery life
@@616lichking RDNA 4 and Zen 5 are said to be more efficient, but we shall see
@@Jerome-iwnl hearsay.
@@616lichking Imagine releasing a new zen architecture, and a new rdna architecture, and it's less efficient than what we have before. That would be a disaster, I don't think it has ever happened to rdna and zen so far
Xbox OS on ARM? New OS for new architecture, rather than trying to jam Windows functionality onto ARM architecture?
I mean, I think that would be great, and I have no doubt we'll see something at some point, it remains to be seen how well games will run through whatever rosetta-like translation layer they come up with for ARM chips
Just the money grab
299 dollars for just a better battery? Yes no thanks lol
the ram will be faster .
Hey boss do you ever hear from dasme the old cohost? He should come on as a guest
Just spoke to him yesterday, he's doing great!
@@NerdNest awesome! Thanks for speaking on it. I just am so curious about him being a viewer for so long... I feel like you, Rich, Phawx and him are a dream team.
oops left Russ out he's a stud.
Give me dual usb-c, regular nvme and a larger battery... maybe I will buy it,.... but I hate windows... so
If it ain’t Oled , no one’s buying it that owns the existing ally .
Rumour has it, ASUS are working on the ROG ALLY 2, apparently it's much better than the first Ally, It can now fry x2 MicroSD cards in half the time
haha
Why are 2 people who have no idea on the rog ally’s specs and features talking for over an hour about it 🤦🏻
I think this fiasco and Gamer's Nexus latest video has put me off Asus entirely. I hope Lenovo are watching and do better.
Are you gonna someone don’t know influence you that much😂 I’ve had my ally for a year no issues but people only talk about negatives. I’ve got all of these major handhelds and enjoy them all! Don’t let some random RUclipsr (Gamer Nexus) sway you from buying something
These guys compare everything to the steam deck lol the whole point of the ROG is to not be like the steam deck.
"They make amazing panels", um don't they just buy amazing panels?
Sure, I don't care who makes them, I just think the panels in these laptops are crazy,.
NO! You are NOT being unreasonable regarding CoPilot. MS Copilot can get bent. A new keyboard layout? Seriously? No. All for LLM integration for chat features. They are useful. I'd rather "AI" be used as Machine Learning via hardware and backend coding, NOT with all these AI / adverstising / rebrand shit. It's crap. Everyone from Old Men like us to younger ppl HATE this shit.
Don't like that background effect at all Bill, I think it could be a lot more discreet. The lines are too big/bright and move too fast, it's very distracting / irritating for me.
