Windows, Microsoft are less open source, DRM free than Valve, SteamOS, which also isn't. Although, Valve has said they're going to get SteamOS out there, yet actions, words. Even if you'd been going the DRM free route and mentioned GoG, both Valve and MSFT have DRM. You don't have to stay on Windows to install and run GoG games, even though they don't support Linux (many games have a Linux install download, Mac even though). Even though they aren't making GoG Galaxy for SteamOS, you can install your DRM free games on Deck, if inclined.

You're not any more "locked in" with SteamOS than you are with Windows. If hypothetically Microsoft actually goes through with attempting to make Windows handheld centric, it would be the exact same context there since they would "favor" people going through the Xbox app/Windows store (and have that be the standpoint in the experience), as has been discussed and mused through Phil Spencer in interviews.
I really, really love the comprehensive perspective that's offered by both Russ and Carey when they each express their priorities and points of view on an issue. It's SUPER helpful when it comes to making decisions on devices and software combos! :)

Consoles are on the way out. I have a PS5 and a Series X and they are probably the last two consoles I ever buy. I use my Steam Deck 10x more than either of them, and mainly stream PSplus games using Chiaki4Deck to the SD and or gamepass games. Turns out portability, power, and form factor are way more game changers than any console locked content. I will buy the SD2 in a minute over any other console and will consume all my games from Steam, PSplus, and or Gamepass on the SD. I have literally completed double the amount of games since getting the SD and having full portability.
Fallout is an amazing show. I haven’t played a single Fallout game, but I want to play one now. Really really really great show, definitely recommend to watch if you haven’t.
Just to clarify, AFMF still doesn't work on the Legion Go due to it being a portrait display. However, Lossless Scaling does and its frame generation is MILES ahead of AMD's IMO. Glad to see it at least get a mention. On more modern games I've been setting a 48fps cap @ 144hz. (48 evenly divides into 144 and eliminates judder from the lack of VRR.). Lossless Scaling will double the 48 fps cap to 96 via interpolation and it works surprisingly well. Minimal input lag compared to AFMF and it doesn't disable itself during fast motion. You do see a bit of image noise around UI elements but it's not very noticeable on a handheld. I've almost finished a playthrough of Horizon Zero Dawn with Lossless Scaling enabled the entire time. Playing at 800p / integer scaled @ 96 fps has been pretty awesome honestly. This type of tech is going to be a game changer on lower end devices once it matures.

Yall should try lossless scaling's frame gen. It works much better than afmf. It's not perfect but works very well. This works well on the Ally if vrr is turned off. And works out of the box for the Legion Go
The PiMax Portal QLED still has one of the best portable screens and comparable to OLED with the unique option for video in. I tried putting one in a Nexigo Gripcon but no luck registering the controllers. The Gripcon does a good job fixing most of the issues I have with the Switch in portable mode and the size is just about right between Switch and Deck but dpad isn't great. If the Steam Deck 2 has an OLED screen at 1080p and is roughly the same size as the Switch with Gripcon, Valve has a real winner. Though with x86 hardware, that's some wishful thinking if customers want a more sleek design, performance boost and higher res screen. Then again 2 years is a long time with development..
frame gen and oculink are the two pieces of tech that will pretty much "future proof" my current devices for a while. I don't see myself upgrading my Win Max 2 or Win Mini 7840U's for a while thanks to these
However Nintendo is handling upscaling currently is how they will with the switch 2 but with 1080p as a minimum spec focus. Any 1st party game will look amazing and have behind the scene trickery standards. As for 3rd party it may have a display setting in game. It would be nice to have a menu that toggles “eco” or “performance” mode but Nintendo wants a seamless experience standardization with preferences to their games.
For the Switch 2.. I hope they do something about the sticks. At least something like the Binbok slim joycons. The sticks are actually smaller, but the “travel” distance is bigger (by quite a bit). So you have a smaller stick but way more .. maybe “precise” its the word.
I thought the switch gamecard coating thing was a joke but there is literally a nintendo help article about it. That's really surprisingly cool that they went for it

Because if the performance compares to other handhelds we currently have or will have within the next 2/6 years for instance decent 1080P high/ultra gaming then that is understandably interesting but if it doesn't come with a Specific OS to use, (while also still having to pay for Nintendo Online to play their games online) Then other competitors with the same performance as switch 2 in the future with Windows/Linux/etc OS and being able to play online for free would be significantly better to have. (Not including emulating switch 2 games I may add) So as we get more details on the switch 2 and their performance details it's safe to say that it's important to save one's excitement/anticipation/hype on the switch 2. Just so you don't get let down on the performance/specs when it releases. (the same can be said with any future handhelds)
Our visual cortex automatically does what frame generation is doing. lol This is how gamers survived the early consoles on a CRT TV. Our visual cortex is very good smooth movies and games out. Movies are cut up into a butch of pieces with a lot of different camera angles. Unless you focus on how much the movie cut up our visual cortex will put to pieces together to make sense in a 3-D environment. Music is often a key to smooth out the sudden cuts. If I am not into a movie playing with no sound I will notice how much the movie is chopped up and find it annoying.
They could FSR 720p to 1080p without development from each games Devs system wide likely Steam Deck does since FSR is open source you can use it on Nvidia or AMD

Between all the people in my house, we have an Xbox, PS5, Switch, Steam Deck, iPads, and two fairly beefy gaming PCs. There's a Nintendo 64 around here somewhere as well. There are lots of people out there who only have access to (and/or the resources for) _one_ platform, and in the case of Xbox, there are still plenty of damned good games on there, mostly thanks to Game Pass. So while "there are so many other places to play games," is true for you and I, it most certainly is not for everyone.
Xbox comments are all logical, but would the panel want microsoft to take the games off other platforms? It seems like everyone applauds multi plat, but then doesn't acknowledge the consequence. So if not what should they do?
Yesterday i got a survey from Microsoft about handhelds, they obviously know my account is linked to multiple handhelds, pc abd xbox. Took about 10 minutes to complete and it seems very much like market research asking how I game, where I use my handheld and if I'm more likely to game handheld or console/pc.

The magnets won't be the whole way it holds on to the system, the magnets will replace the current system in which a plastic latch locks it in and triggers an electronic switch. The magnet will combine the latch and the switch making it no longer wear out.

I actually enjoy the joycons a lot. Never had an issue with them, colors are fun, they’re light and feature packed, and the sticks are just fine. I’ve played with my same switch since day one and I have to say I hope they don’t change much other than the power, software, and maybe some cosmetic improvements. It’s served me well for 7 years or however long, and that’s impressive in today’s market.
Unsure why Nintendo would bother with a Switch 2 if it's just going to be a 720p OLED at about 7-8" screen size with the same carts and effectively the same joycons? There has to be something different that speaks to regular Nintendo consumers who, and I can't stress this enouigh, don't care about X1 and tensor cores and DLSS and Nvidia.
It will be the Switch, but with more power, which means more games can run better on it. Yeah the mainline Nintendo fans don't care about most of that stuff, they just want to play Nintendo games, but Nintendo could say, get the new switch, and our new games won't run on the old switch. People will upgrade.
Sure, I'm not denying that Switch 2 won't happen and that it'll have more power, or indeed that Nintendo could do that just to force people to "buy the new one", I'm saying that from past form Nintendo do some sort of hook other than that; it's been form factors, controllers, motion, all sorts in the past, so at the very least I'd expect them to do *something* like 1080 handheld, 4k docked, *IF* they don't do a complete redesign again. They've never been interested in being the most powerful so I don't expect that but if they're going for 720p, 7-8" OLED, same joycons, just another Swich 1 refresh would suffice rather than the cost of a whole new platform.
I wonder how many millions of joycons have drift and their owners are either kids who don't realize or people who don't know Nintendo will repair them for free. I'd venture to guess most switch owners just buy new joycons if they have issues

If you're talking about the Switch not being backwards compatible, I think it was the right move, you can't have a successful portable system based on optical media, it just won't work well.
I'm buying the Next Xbox Pro or Next Gen. Can't have a PC in every room so it's nice to have a Series X with GamePass/GaneFly that will carry your saves over from console to PC to Steam Deck to Cloud and Remote play. It's a beautiful ecosystem, and it'll be even more awesome if my Steam games can be played on next Series of consoles.
10:54 there is no way nintendo or any of the big console makers EVER goes with hall effect, and my answer is very boring. getting out of that contract with the parts manufacturer its such an impossible task i give you an example, when this gen xbox released, a lot of the press priced them for keeping the removable AA batteries on their controllers "it's so consumer friendly, good job". the real reason they have batteries is that they have a massive contract with the batterie maker Duracell, like a 20 year in the running type of contract. that they aren't going to ever consider dropping I would guess that the same thing happens with (i think its alps) the thumpsticks manufacturer. I would imagine is far more realistic that their supplier starts making hall effect first, and then they sell to the console manufacturers. but that also sounds hard because of patents and so on. and we would learn about it years before the console cycle begins
Do they really have that kind of deal for thumbsticks though? With batteries, it makes sense because it’s Duracell, they’re working that branding in there. I don’t know any name-brand thumbstick manufacturer for Xbox though.
IMHO the next gen consoles/PC's will be all about AI: AI upscaling, i.e. the use of AI for NPC's in games, AI for... etc. etc. I have a PS4 Pro and haven't upgraded to a PS5. When I wanted to, I couldn't and now I don't want it anymore. I will wait for the PS(5) exclusives to come out on PC. So I upgraded my gaming PC instead of buying a PS5 (Pro). The PC is the place to be, because you can play Microsoft's stuff there too. Now we only need Nintendo on PC.... Oh, wait! ;p

Bill you need to try dualbooting bazzite on your legion go. Picked up a legion this week and coming from the deck it just felt like a windows tablet with stuck on joycons. Switching across to bazzite was easy and has full feature support now
Only Sony charges to unlock a game to run at the 'next gen' settings on the next gen console you already paid for. And it is ridiculous and a Rip off. Frame gen is made for ray tracing, we are still going to need all the power because ray tracing is very hard to do
I guess im lucky as I have never had drift or noticeable drift in any controller I own even my switch joycons.

I actually enjoy the joycons a lot. Never had an issue with them, colors are fun, they’re light and feature packed, and the sticks are just fine. I’ve played with my same switch since day one and I have to say I hope they don’t change much other than the power, software, and maybe some cosmetic improvements. It’s served me well for 7 years or however long, and that’s impressive in today’s market.
Unsure why Nintendo would bother with a Switch 2 if it's just going to be a 720p OLED at about 7-8" screen size with the same carts and effectively the same joycons? There has to be something different that speaks to regular Nintendo consumers who, and I can't stress this enouigh, don't care about X1 and tensor cores and DLSS and Nvidia.
It will be the Switch, but with more power, which means more games can run better on it. Yeah the mainline Nintendo fans don't care about most of that stuff, they just want to play Nintendo games, but Nintendo could say, get the new switch, and our new games won't run on the old switch. People will upgrade.
Sure, I'm not denying that Switch 2 won't happen and that it'll have more power, or indeed that Nintendo could do that just to force people to "buy the new one", I'm saying that from past form Nintendo do some sort of hook other than that; it's been form factors, controllers, motion, all sorts in the past, so at the very least I'd expect them to do *something* like 1080 handheld, 4k docked, *IF* they don't do a complete redesign again. They've never been interested in being the most powerful so I don't expect that but if they're going for 720p, 7-8" OLED, same joycons, just another Swich 1 refresh would suffice rather than the cost of a whole new platform.
I think they'll have that stuff as well.

I wonder how many millions of joycons have drift and their owners are either kids who don't realize or people who don't know Nintendo will repair them for free. I'd venture to guess most switch owners just buy new joycons if they have issues

If you're talking about the Switch not being backwards compatible, I think it was the right move, you can't have a successful portable system based on optical media, it just won't work well.
I'm buying the Next Xbox Pro or Next Gen. Can't have a PC in every room so it's nice to have a Series X with GamePass/GaneFly that will carry your saves over from console to PC to Steam Deck to Cloud and Remote play. It's a beautiful ecosystem, and it'll be even more awesome if my Steam games can be played on next Series of consoles.

i give you an example, when this gen xbox released, a lot of the press priced them for keeping the removable AA batteries on their controllers "it's so consumer friendly, good job". the real reason they have batteries is that they have a massive contract with the batterie maker Duracell, like a 20 year in the running type of contract. that they aren't going to ever consider dropping
I would guess that the same thing happens with (i think its alps) the thumpsticks manufacturer. I would imagine is far more realistic that their supplier starts making hall effect first, and then they sell to the console manufacturers. but that also sounds hard because of patents and so on. and we would learn about it years before the console cycle begins
Do they really have that kind of deal for thumbsticks though? With batteries, it makes sense because it’s Duracell, they’re working that branding in there. I don’t know any name-brand thumbstick manufacturer for Xbox though.

IMHO the next gen consoles/PC's will be all about AI: AI upscaling, i.e. the use of AI for NPC's in games, AI for... etc. etc.
I have a PS4 Pro and haven't upgraded to a PS5. When I wanted to, I couldn't and now I don't want it anymore. I will wait for the PS(5) exclusives to come out on PC. So I upgraded my gaming PC instead of buying a PS5 (Pro). The PC is the place to be, because you can play Microsoft's stuff there too.
Now we only need Nintendo on PC.... Oh, wait! ;p

Let say if Microsoft did aloud steam on the xbox and Valve agree as a player I'm like why I want to buy it on xbox store, I can get it on steam and still able play it with proton on steam steam/linux or even for windows for most user, why will a dev do the work and trouble getting it on xbox if they just target steam and it will work on the xbox.

Bill you need to try dualbooting bazzite on your legion go. Picked up a legion this week and coming from the deck it just felt like a windows tablet with stuck on joycons. Switching across to bazzite was easy and has full feature support now

Xbox doesn't do it and PC sure as hell doesn't do it. So if Switch 2 followed that line of business it would go down like a lead balloon. especially for such a miniscule resolution bump. Just NO.
