Clift should have won for Judgement of Nuremberg. When he was on the stand it just takes your breath away. What a fantastic actor. It's heartbreaking that he couldn't fight his Demons. What he could have been. An absolute Legend.
I feel the the same about Robert Mitchum. I thought he should have won an Oscar numerous times but his issues were more with the power's that be. They hated him because he wasn't a yes man. Because wouldn't conform to there bullshit he was snubbed year after year.
I also read and saw interviews that he also was very giving on sets. That he helped any way he could to make sure whomever he was acting with were at there best.
Clift and Mitchum were my absolute favorites. Extroidary actors that deserved far more than they got.

Montgomery Clift should have won all 4 academy awards he was nominated for. He made all the other actors better just by watching him. Seems to me like the academy is a popularity contest anyway & Monty wouldn't do the Hollywood scene, he lived in New York & refused to live in California & also refused to sign any contracts. He said that the acting to him was more important than the money. RIP MONTY🙏💔🙏💔🙏

Clift was indeed one of those actors who put their entire selves into a role. He demanded the best of himself, and I imagine those in the film with him. This may have been what put him at odds with some of his co-stars/directors -- there was likely an implicit or even explicit criticism of others whom Clift thought were not tuning their performance/direction in a way Clift approved.
Even though many consider his performance in Judgement to have been the result of his alcohol abuse and failing memory, Clift's extensive notes on the script showed that instead he was merely creating the character as he thought it should be done (and not how the writers had written it in many cases). And you're right, it was to me one of the most memorable parts in that great film.
I wonder sometimes if Hollywood passed Clift over for the 'big one' because of envy, or an uncomfortable feeling that he so far surpassed most 'stars' in his dedication to his craft as to embarrass them into avoiding honoring his remarkable contributions to acting.
An interesting bit of trivia is that Marlon Brando was so moved by Clift's performance in A Place in the Sun he voted for Clift for best actor -- and Clift voted for Marlon in A Streetcar Named Desire. 2 icons showing respect for each other's craft in their chosen profession....

Completely agree. He was not a conventional movie star and loved his privacy, which is why a lot of people felt he was "above" Hollywood. Some artists were appalled by his sexual orientation, like John Huston.
Yep, isn't it so great how Brando and Clift respected each other so much. If only they would've had more scenes together...

The first movie I watched featuring Montgomery Clift was 'From Here To Eternity'. Of course, I was impressed by his and Frank Sinatra's performances. But my favorite is 'Wild River'. I watched it dubbed on TV. Recently, I bought the DVD disc and it got even better. And yes, Lee Remick is amazing too. I cannot forget to mention 'The Misfits' which I could only watch very recently and it is such an amazing movie. It is by far Marilyn Monroe's best performance. This movie stayed in my mind for days. I had recurrent flashbacks. And it is also my Clark Gable's favorite performance too.

I realize that this posting was almost a year ago, but I just serendipitously came upon your channel, and I really enjoyed your presentation. I've subscribed, so I'm looking forward to catching up on the rest of your posts. As for this one, I really admire your passionate approach to Montgomery Cliff's performances. He was a great talent who sometimes gets overshadowed by the Brando and Dean mystiques. He brought out the best in so many of his co-stars: for my money, Red River is Wayne's best performance, much better than his sentimental Oscar winner, True Grit. As for your list, of course it's subjective and there is no right or wrong. from my ow point of view, I would have flip-flopped your first and third choices -I think From Here to Eternity is his best. That being aid, it's been many years since I saw A Place in the Sun, and, on your recommendation, I plan to give it another look.

Marion Morrison's least favorite Western, Red River..aka The Duke,John Wayne. Monty's another story..take em to Missouri Matt.
The Heiress was a difficult picture. Monty's worst method acting performance.
Robert E Lee Prewitt is real good.
Jennifer Jones in the train station is highly underrated Italian cinema.
He and the violet eyed one out at Loon Lake put together 1 of the finest of all movies..though Aguirre Wrath of God and Orson's Confidential Report do rival it. A place in the sun..Incredibly gripping.
Suddenly last is very very crazy
    Raintree, kind of a waste
Stellar career..no doubt. sorry Jimmy Dean
George Eastman def deserved the Academy Award @the 1952 ceremony. He knows, we know, it should've been on his Brownstone walkup mantle.
In my opinion, he and Elizabeth should have married right around this time period. Even if it lasted only a few years before her falling for Mr Todd or Mr Burton..it would've helped him out immensely. And please don't tell me they weren't on love or that he was gay..please. Thankyou for your work🕊️

5:30 The Heiress is one of my all time favorite films. I assume Monty walked out of the premier because his character was such a lowlife, but he was great convincing the audience he was. The premise doesn't really make sense though: Catherine has $10,000 a year, the equivalent of $400,000 in today's money. But Morris, expecting $30,000 ($1,200,000 today), runs away and returns 7 years later. Catherine turns the tables on him vengeful ending. This differs from the novel.. It was remade in 1997 as Washington Square, the original title, starring Jennifer Jason Leigh.
