Of all the three iconic actors that emerged in the 1950s, Marlon, James, and Monty,
Monty remains the most overlooked. Before the terrible car accident that broke him
physically and mentally, he was responsible for some of the best films of that period.
"Red River", "A Place In The Sun", "The Heiress" and "From Here To Eternity" still remain
classics after six decades. Even after his golden period, "The Misfits" and "Suddenly
Last Summer", Monty proved he could still leave a memorable impression.
Unlike Brando and Dean, nobody has been able to mimic Monty. He still remains in
a field of one. Before or since no male actor has matched his frail beauty.

“Was remained” is not a verb. You can’t make a passive construction as “remain” is not transitive. In this you are attempting to describe a past state. It should say “ Why Montgomery Clift remained an outsider in Hollywood”. This aspect of completion is sufficient to indicate that it was a past state that was finished sometime in the past.

Insecurities haunt all of Us daily but some of Us have Ppl in our lives that make that "heavy ordeal" or "load" feel less jarring. Monty really was on this Earth, at a time when Everyone had their own "Secrets, Issues, and Concerns". Many of those Folks were able to mask their issues, while Monty wasn't able to do so without it being noticable. One thing about Monty is that He always knew his worth and that clashed with The Powers-That-Be in "The Business Of Show". His name isn't usually mentioned a great deal among the Big Stars or "Heavies" during his prime but his Talent and Good Looks can't be denied.

Montgomery Clift is certainly among my top five favorite actors. His work was brilliant. He brought a genuine pathos to all of his characters. Nothing about him was fake and he wouldn't play the Hollywood game. He also had liaisons with women according to his brother Brooks. There's an excellent documentary on Monty, produced by his nephew. It's called "Making Montgomery Clift" and it dispels the many rumors and myths about his life. I highly recommend watching it here on YT. Thanks for the video, Age of Vintage.

Hi Age of Vintage, how are you? This is a very interesting & complex life of the extremely handsome Montgomery Clift or Monty as he was known by. He played in some very very good movies albiet in his short career. His first film was opposite John Wayne in Red River, he played in other notable films including The Heiress in 1949, A place in the Sun in 1951 with Elizabeth Taylor, I Confess in 1953, From Here To Eternity in 1953, Judgement at Nuremberg in 1961, & The Misfits in 1961 with Clark Gable & Marilyn Monroe. Whilst filming Raintree County again with Elizabeth Taylor, he was involved in a car crash after leaving her home after a dinner party. He had severe facial injuries including a broken jaw, broken nose & severe breakage of his sinuses. He was hospitalised for 8 weeks. He was also using prescription drugs & alcohol after a bout with dysentery earlier, but after his car crash from which he never really recovered he began to rely more on pain killers & alcohol, as he had done earlier. This beautiful man was quite confused about his sexuality, he not only had affairs with women, he had relationships with men as well. It was well known he was probably bisexual or even straight out gay, what ever he chose to do in his private life to me is that : private. On July 22nd 1966 Clift spent most of that day in his room in his New York city townhouse. His private nurse Lorenzo James saw him last at 1.00 am in the morning & asked if he required anything else before he was going to bed. No thanks said Monty I'm just going to read or watch a bit of TV. At 6.30am he went upstairs to check on him & found the bedroom door closed & locked. Unable to break down the door, he went around the back & climbed up to the second floor bedroom. He found Monty dead in his half filled bathtub. James then rang the police & the ambulance. His body was taken to the city morgue & cause of death was deemed a heart attack, brought on by occlusive coronary heart disease. A sad day indeed in Hollywood, Monty was always too hard on himself & his performances had to be perfect. He was only 45 years old. Love Love from Australia 🇦🇺💖💖💛💛📽📽🎬🎬💜💜💚💚❤❤⚘⚘⚘⚘⚘⚘💋💋

Iread the book "from here to eternity way before ever watching the movie, and Clift's performance regarding "Pruitt" is so spot on and amazing that soon after i sought out and saw every movie he ever was in. What a TALENT and what a good looking guy he was (even straight guys recognize a handsome ladykiller when they see one), I do not care what he did off screen, even though i feel for his suffering and struggles with addiction, and the problems of showbiz and hollywod. What i do care awfully about is his command of his roles in his films that remind me of James Dean's work, both were the best of the best, just didn't live long enough to establish themselves as icons or true heavyweights of hollywood and it's golden years of film and those who made them so good. like Montgomery Clift, truly a special person and monster talent.

Thank you for putting this together. So many people who knew Monty or crossed his path were profoundly moved by him. His addictions only make his acting achievements that much more impressive because he managed to pull himself together enough and perform so beautifully and powerfully within the chains of addiction and physical illness. His family says he wasn't ashamed or disturbed about his sexuality but it's also true that in his era he couldn't ever hope to marry or adopt children. And that is something he often said he wanted. I can't imagine having to live with that sad knowledge. It had to hurt him deeply and deepen his need for relief through drugs and alcohol. A monster talent. A beautiful man and a gentle soul.

Thank you so much for uploading this. He's one of my favorite actors, so much so, I love to watch his movies again and again. Otherwise I hardly rewatch movies even if i enjoy it.
Such a wonderful actor and beautiful man he was but so misunderstood somehow, everytime I watch him i can feel the emotions he is portraying strongly, especially in sad scenes I can't stop crying, his eyes portray emotions so well, I always feel that he really gets sad and depressed in those scenes. I always felt even when he smiled or is happy there's some kind of sadness and longing in his eyes, well it's still part of what makes him so beautiful as a performer.
I was always a fan of Mr brando's work and love method acting and although I was aware of monty, I discovered his talent only some time back. Monty Clift is up there as one of the best actors of all time and best of the best of that era together with brando. He's left a lasting impression on me and after knowing and watching his movies I decided to take theater classes.

Why was Monty Clift “an outsider”? Like James Dean, Clift hated the hoopla which plagued famous and handsome actors; also, like Dean, Clift detested the bloodsucking Hollywood paparazzi (literally: “troublesome mosquitoes”) who created all the hoopla and then, of course, created scandal after scandal, no differently than what goes on even to this day. The press “makes ‘em, then breaks ‘em” to keep morons literally “paying” attention.
It’s really too bad Clift, Dean, and others, true artists, did not choose Europe as an escape. I happen to believe the French and the Italians, and, possibly, the Germans, would’ve embraced their arrival and their work unlike the majority of American public who did not seriously consider filmmaking as an art.

  • @SBecktacular

I can totally relate to Clift-
When you want to be good at what you do, but aren’t interested in fluff and superficiality, most people don’t understand you- and when people don’t understand you, they tend to shun you because they take it personally-
Most of society has it backwards-
The bubbly, outgoing, chatty, gregarious ones are the ones you need to be wary of.

There’s a Great New book 📖 “Elizabeth and Monty” Elizabeth was his best friend until the day he died. Elizabeth always accepted Gay friends, but She Never had sex with him. When accepting a Human Rights Fund award, for her work with AIDS, She chided people who discriminate against Gays-and said her 3 best friends were Gay “Monty, Rock and Jimmy (Dean)” 🌈 She rescued Monty at his accident. No one there could open a door, but somehow She did & crawled inside and when she saw he couldn’t talk, she reached down his throat & pulled out his teeth from his throat, enabling him to breathe again. When they pulled Monty out, there were lots of photographers there & Elizabeth yelled at the photographers that she knew them & if any of them took a picture of Monty- She would never let them photograph her again. They would talk on the phone every day and she put up her salary as insurance for him to Star with her in “Reflections in a Golden Eye “ since he was uninsurable, but he died before it could be filmed. He nicknamed her Bessie May. 💔

Clift was NOT shunned nor was he given any trouble by other actors do to his sexuality....it was Clift who set his own rules....he turned down great scripts..like Sunset Blvd.......for weird reasons after agreeing to do it...would keep to himself and study his role at nights with a woman friend..i can't think of her name..who NO ONE liked and had to be told to leave the set by the directors on more than one occasion.....he DID NOT...date jimmy or his house man...James..
..Olsen was his best friend though Clift never realized it.....and James was just a man who took fine care of Monty.....who was abusing drugs and booze..waaaaaaaay before the end of his life......
Monty was a fine actor, but his movies are small in number....and do not be swayed because it was Monty and only Monty that did him in.....no one was out to get him..etc.

Tom Cruise when he was much younger looked a lot like Monty. Similar deep set eyes, high nose bridge and that boyish 'slightly tilted' gorgeous smile. Their side profile especially looks really similar..
Although i find Monty much more goodlooking
