PUFF SLEEVES!!! 😍 The scene where Anne goes to the barn to show Mathew the dress and thank him for it is one of my favorite. Her joy and gratitude combined with his love for "his little girl" makes for a very emotional scene.
"Historically adequate" seems, to me, as a great balance between history and fun! Bottom line, Sewstine, you always look fabulous whether your look is historically accurate or adequate!
Historically inspired (not necessarily historically accurate at the same time) is a wonderful thing :) You look absolutely fabulous :) The waistcoat adjustment trick is genius :)
Ha ha, a girl after my own heart. I, too, am historically adequate. Uh! The sleeves! I have more than one pattern that just the blouse is 5 yards!! Five yards for a skirt, five yards for a blouse, I'm walking around in easily 9 yards of fabric after it's all said and done! But oh, "SUCH FASHION." Love this! Stay well!
I love that you tell us where you are accurate and not. I also love that you include the places you get the things you buy vs. make. I think it is amazing that you are supporting the community.
Binging your videos in the background while I made supper. My two-year-old loves them, which surprised me because she's super into Toy Story most days. She just walked into the room with a faux sheepskin held up against her and said "I make a dress, mama." which shocked and delighted me! Obviously your influence!
I really appreciate you saying that there aresome pieces you dont care about making. It can be really stressful to make a 100% historically accurate, home made outfit and you saying that its okay to substitute and\or buy premade pieces makes me stress less. Thank you.
I really love watching costubers that have a big budget, it's beautiful and inspiring. I'm over here like "this is just a 20 year old bed sheet I picked up from my linen closet lined with polyester curtains I stole from my mother," lol.
I' in love with those sleeves. As a young adult in the 80s, big sleeves were a fashion statement I wore frequently. They are kind of making a comeback as "statement sleeves".
The bit where you struggled with the buttons had me laugh out loud! The contrast between the underskirt and the rest of the outfit is such a nice touch. Beautiful work as always :)
This dress is absolutely gorgeous, puffed sleeves and all. Also love the inclusion of the Kate Beaton comic. I still quote her work all the time and no one gets it.
Haha I love that the fabric changed you to team Mariilla lol I love the older version of Anne too so wish it was available to watch somewhere. Really enjoyed this video xx
With the amount of work this must have been and how clumsy I am with drinks, I would only ever drink water in this beautiful outfit, I’d be sure to stain it otherwise-hats off to your bravery
This ensemble is magnificent and you look wonderful in it! :D Seeing all the layers and how they fit together weirdly make the idea of creating an outfit like this a little less intimidating. Like yes, it's a lot of work, a lot of decisions to make - but taking it step by step, each individual piece can be created however works best for you to support the overall concept.
I love that I just found a ton of new sources because you shared them here! So useful, and STUNNING results, thank you!! (And as always, I will happily steal your sofa anytime you feel like leaving the room. That fabric is just *chef's kiss*.)
I'm in awe of how amazing you look, and sad it took me such a long time to find you. On the bright side I have lots of new and amazing videos to watch.❤
8:30 that's super interesting! There's a tailor I was getting training at who actually does this with extra linen at the "skirt"/bottom of the jackets he cuts to give the coats more of a flare! Interesting to see traditional techniques being used in 21st century bespoke :D
I previously wondered how does Sewstine find the energy and patience to do such elaborate embroidery projects? Well it’s a revolutionary concept really: Prioritize projects that are interesting, and not caring if the shift is the wrong era, buying a shirt waist and corset... I like it. Very sensible use of your creative energies.
lol Thank you Lynn! I really DON'T believe in using any of the little free time I have to do anything I don't absolutely love. It's a privilege to buy what I need to do it, and then ignore the parts I don't even care about, but it does make it actually possible.
Layering the garments starting below the waist rather than _at_ it is very sensible when you want to keep your apparent waistline at your natural waist, rather than slightly above it.
I do love the historical emporium blouses, but I’m right at the top end of their size range, and given how expensive shipping is, I’m not sure I want to risk it. It’s like with the last corset I bought- it is slightly too big, but I’d have to pay for shipping both ways (I believe) to return it and get the next size down, and that’s over $100 just for the shipping. Thankfully, disability to the rescue- because I sit in a wheelchair, I have to have my corset looser than what I would have it were I to be upright most of the time, so the fact that it’s a little too big isn’t really an issue. I did get the recommended size for my measurements, but I have a small ribcage and I’m super squishy, so I can easily corset down 10 inches before I hit tight lacing territory. But as for blouses, I think I might be better off making my own, but I’m still looking for a basic (little to no lace insertion, and only very slightly puffy sleeves) pattern. If anyone has any recommendations for a basic blouse pattern (or even just a good premise basic blouse that comes in plus sizes and isn’t too expensive), I’m all ears!
Ha! I never expected to encounter a picture of myself when I started to watch this video! But there I was in my walking skirt. By the way, your sleeves are amazing and I loved the whole outfit. I wish I had your hair to be able to do those gibson girl hairstyles. No matter how I try, I can’t cover the hair rat at the front as that would require all the hair I have.
Oh my god. Thanks to you I have found the blouse of my dreams by looking in your video. One on the site Hystorica Emperium , the Emmeline ruffle blouse have the exact detail of what I was looking to complet my kit I use to give conferences. So much thank you. I'am really happy.
This grogeous truly victorian skirt was my first bigger project after I started sewing three month before I made it. So I skipped the lining part. I am a tiny person and long skirt make me look even more tiny usually but gosh, that skirt?! I look like so much taller in it. I love it so so much. I need to make a few more of it
I loved seeing you build this one on instagram, but it's fantastic to be able to see how all the fabrics move and hang in video form! That orange is truly devine, I agree!
I've been using your videos to help me study (im a textiles student so lots and lots of hands-on work), your voice is so lovely and I love watching what you create and the projects you're working on! I so feel the term 'historically adequate', i love costume and craft history but don't have the time for authentic reproductions so I live vicariously through costube, haha. Love your channel and your energy
My very favorite movie of all time has to be the Megan follows version from the 8same 0’s however so glad you referenced it! It made me cry when Mathew got that dress for her!
Re: hair & gown not lining up...why would someone get rid of a very very expensive gown and not reuse it in a few years or pass it down? Maybe a new hairstyle will make it look "fresh"! Plus vintage days with your friends at tea...
while not everybody would have stayed absolutely up to date, clothing was certainly altered or even taken apart and the fabric remade into something else entirely. or it would have been sold or given away for somebody else to likely do those things. vintage dressing wasn’t really a thing outside of fancy dress parties and the like, you’d likely just be seen as out of date
that shocking pink lining in your jacket 😍 (the whole outfit is great, but that detail caught my eye!) and I love the last shot where you use your phone in this gorgeous historic outfit. It's so 'wrong' that it's great! (wrong only because they didn't had smartphones back then obviously)
"I'm wearing makeup but mine is not historically accurate, mine is just Chanel" lol a legendary sentence
I'm going to use "historically adequate" forever. Thank you for that lol! The whole ensemble is beautiful btw. I'm absolutely amazed.
"Boots first, then corset" is the goth scene mantra for a reason!
"Boots before bodice" is the Renfaire version.
This is the historical costuming equivalent of posting pictures with a private jet.
LOL! Thank you!
Thank you! haha! It's a term @bernadettebanner @rachelmaksy and @morgandonner started but it's so true to me!
Historically inspired (not necessarily historically accurate at the same time) is a wonderful thing :) You look absolutely fabulous :) The waistcoat adjustment trick is genius :)
I love "historically adequate" it captures the 15 foot rule perfectly. If it looks right from 15 feet, it is right.
That waistcoat split is such a brilliant solve!
THE PUFFED SLEEEEEEEEEEEVES! Also "because I like it" is a totally legit reason for diverging from historical accuracy in costuming. Love it!
The silent "WHAT THE FFFFUUUUUU" made me giggle like a child 😂.
Also "historically adequate" describes me perfectly, I love that
Ha ha, a girl after my own heart. I, too, am historically adequate. Uh! The sleeves! I have more than one pattern that just the blouse is 5 yards!! "Historically adequate" is a fantastic way to put it. Definitely what I aspire to. And thanks for all the links and resources!
I really love watching costubers that have a big budget, it's beautiful and inspiring. I'm over here like "this is just a 20 year old bed sheet I picked up from my linen closet lined with polyester curtains I stole from my mother," lol.
Wonderful trick for reducing the appearance of your waist. ‘One size fits none’ love it!
Puffed sleeves is so beautiful.
I' in love with those sleeves. As a young adult in the 80s, big sleeves were a fashion statement I wore frequently. They are kind of making a comeback as "statement sleeves".

This little Anne comic strip is everything 😂
Love love love the whole outfit, it is truly gorgeous 👏🏻
The comic artist is a lady named Kate Beaton! She's amazing and hilarious and her comics have a lot of historical costumes in them!
LOVE THE CAMEO and you in that beautiful outfit, of course. The proportions of the huge sleeves with the rest of the dress is perfect. Thank you.
This dress is absolutely gorgeous, puffed sleeves and all. Also love the inclusion of the Kate Beaton comic. I still quote her work all the time and no one gets it.
I love how great the blouse and skirt alone look! Adding the waistcoat makes it amazing and then the jacket!! What fun. This is very inspiring!
"Historically adequate," I love that so much 😂❤
Okay, you convinced me. I just bought the pattern...
The teacup... and than cheking the mobile! ^^ Perfection!
"omg, such fashion" I'm so here for the Hark, A Vagrant references!
Haha I love that the fabric changed you to team Mariilla lol I love the older version of Anne too so wish it was available to watch somewhere. Really enjoyed this video xx
Ohmigosh! You are a perfect grown up Anne! You are so beautiful and elegant! I am in awe of your sewing skills. Thank you for sharing this.
With the amount of work this must have been and how clumsy I am with drinks, I would only ever drink water in this beautiful outfit, I’d be sure to stain it otherwise-hats off to your bravery
I live for giant sleeves! Also the colour of that silk paired with the wool? absolutely stunning!!
This ensemble is magnificent and you look wonderful in it! :D

I subscribed before even watching your video just based on your epically cool title... "I like big sleeves and I cannot lie"!
Just finished watching! Love your style and your video 💖
Thank you!!!
Cool outfit ideas. Thanks. Really neat.
Love this presentation! Thank you for listing the small businesses you bought from and your fabrics sources.
Growing up I was impressed that a particular Dior dress had 6 years in the skirt; it made me want a dress with a 6 yard skirt.
I love that I just found a ton of new sources because you shared them here! So useful, and STUNNING results, thank you!! (And as always, I will happily steal your sofa anytime you feel like leaving the room. That fabric is just *chef's kiss*.)
what a beautiful checked fabric
The dress Anne wears when Recites the Highway Man.... I so so soooo want to see a recreation of that dress... i love it
I'm in awe of how amazing you look, and sad it took me such a long time to find you. On the bright side I have lots of new and amazing videos to watch.❤

This is a GREAT video. I can totally see my 14yo steampunk obssessed self swooning over this. Thank you so much.
Was going to get sleep but that can wait
You look amazing, love the outfit and puff sleeves are absolutely worth it
Binging all your videos because you’re amazing
@Sewstine • You didn't even take credit for the fact you did this in plaid! Terrific! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Oh my gosh, that adjustment trick just saved me so much work on future designs!!
Also that dress is so beautiful!!!! :)))
I'm so glad! And thank you!
Major fall vibes!
This is fantastic! It's been 30 years since I watched Anne of Green Gables, but I remember her growing into the Gibson Girl look later in the series.
I love big sleeves. And am a crossdresser.
I previously wondered how does Sewstine find the energy and patience to do such elaborate embroidery projects?

The hat just makes it look even more amazing in an instant :D
you have such a lovely smile Sewstine!
Layering the garments starting below the waist rather than _at_ it is very sensible when you want to keep your apparent waistline at your natural waist, rather than slightly above it.
"Puff sleeves eat up so much fabric and serve no purpose other than to go around with fab puff sleeves." SOUNDS LIKE A GREAT REASON TO ME!
You seem like you're getting a lot more comfortable with doing voice overs and such! Great work!
Historically Inspired
I love these "Hidden Layers" videos!!!
I am on your Side about the actress for Anne. And on Annes side regarding sleeves.❤️
Enchanting movie costumes
love the concept of a sleeve hoop. lmao. it makes sense in context, but just sounds so silly. The outfit looks great!
Thank you August! It IS crazy, isn't it? But it works!
@@Sewstine where can i get the plastic hoops

Gosh, I need a walking skirt in my life right now!! It’s sooooooooo pretty!!! Amazing outfit! Makes me want to sew right now. ☺️
I love this outfit!
Oh my word, Anne would have loved going out in this ... the puffiest sleeves ever, ! 😍😍😍 Awesome work, as ever.
Ha! I never expected to encounter a picture of myself when I started to watch this video! But there I was in my walking skirt. By the way, your sleeves are amazing and I loved the whole outfit. Everything you make is so glorious! Thank you for showing us all the hidden layers and secrets
Oh my god. Thanks to you I have found the blouse of my dreams by looking in your video. One on the site Hystorica Emperium , the Emmeline ruffle blouse have the exact detail of what I was looking to complet my kit I use to give conferences. So much thank you. I'am really happy.
It looks beautiful. The fabric looks so warm and comfortable, but maybe not in the heat.
This was such a fun video.
This grogeous truly victorian skirt was my first bigger project after I started sewing three month before I made it. So I skipped the lining part. I am a tiny person and long skirt make me look even more tiny usually but gosh, that skirt?! I look like so much taller in it. I love it so so much. I need to make a few more of it
I am in the middle of making that walking skirt! I was inspired by all you lovely seamstress youtubers!
Ooooh, it's all so beautiful. Thank you for sharing your tips for the waistcoat, the sleeves and the stiffener....oh, just all of it!
The cameo of M is everything!
Appreciate your meticulous sourcing. Helpful.
Anne would be drooling... I’m sorry, I mean I’m drooling! I love your work so much!
I loved seeing you build this one on instagram, but it's fantastic to be able to see how all the fabrics move and hang in video form! That orange is truly devine, I agree!

The adjustability of those clothes is amazing - as are the sleeves! You look great in it :D
Sweet video... thank you !
Glorious
My very favorite movie of all time has to be the Megan follows version from the 8same 0’s however so glad you referenced it! It made me cry when Mathew got that dress for her!
I love the concept of "historically adequate"!
Not historically accurate, but historically adequate yeeeeeeeeeeeesssss!
I will use historically accurate too! And the waistcoat thing is such a great mindset
Anne of Green Gables--my all time favorite childhood book!! Love your channel!! ❤ (and your Chanel?) 😂
Glad to see you back and thanks for aharing.
Yessss! What a fabulous ensemble!
THE SLEEVES. So beautiful!! And Megan Follows is the only Anne in my opinion lol
Re: hair & gown not lining up...why would someone get rid of a very very expensive gown and not reuse it in a few years or pass it down? Maybe a new hairstyle will make it look "fresh"! Plus vintage days with your friends at tea...

OMG I love that you used Kate Beaton's cartoon, she is the absolute best
that shocking pink lining in your jacket 😍 (the whole outfit is great, but that detail caught my eye!)
and I love the last shot where you use your phone in this gorgeous historic outfit. It's so 'wrong' that it's great! (wrong only because they didn't had smartphones back then obviously)
Before the video even started I was all ready to comment about Anne and her sleeves but you beat me to it! 😅
This is so entertaining and interesting. Thank you!
Such an enjoyable video. Thank-you.
omg such fashion indeed
I love it. A gorgeous outfit.
BTW, there are some bow watch brooches to hang your watch from in the store
That's a great suggestion! Thank you!
