The Batman & Robin PS1 Game Is An Absolute Disaster

  • My 'Worst Superhero Games Ever Made' series continues with Batman & Robin for the PS1! Honestly, there isn't much to say here. Outside of a well designed open-world Gotham City, this game legitimately sucks. I wish it was better, just like I wish more people loved Joel Schumacher's Batman & Robin film, but unfortunately that's not the case. Don't play this game. It's not worth it. I promise it.

This game terrified me as a child. I hardly never used to get out of the batmobile because I was so scared. The museum was the scariest. Gotham is meant to be a little creepy and gothic. Not bloody serial killer, haunted mansion vibes.

LMAOOOO that last sentence is so funny. You're not wrong though! It feels more like Batman '89 than Schumacher's films and that says a lot, considering Batman 89s Gotham really isn't THAT dark or as dark as this game's Gotham. I really wonder why they didn't make Gotham far more colorful

@IDontBeatGames it was pretty revolutionary how they managed to create a 3D sandbox driving game back in the late 90s. I mean, gta was 2d back then. Graphical limitations might have created the spooky, deformed vibe. The bad controls made you a sitting duck for enemies, think that made them more scary than they were.

You know what? I also watched Batman & Robin a huge amount of times, more than anyone would dare to admit. And for this game, gotta say it really tried. It failed where the Arkham games succedeed, which shows this game was too ahead for it's time.

I really wanted this game to be better, I truly did. I wanted to make sure that I didn't spend the entire video trying to obnoxiously talk bad about it when there were very clearly things that were ahead of its time or they had the right idea at the time but a slight adjustment could've been SO much better for the game's outcome. I'm looking forward to continuing to revisit more superhero games and trying to get better at reviewing these games with a modern lens

🦇 Unpopular opinion‼️ 🦇 this was one of the first open world games ever, sure it's glithy, has graphics problems & controls aren't the best... but 'back in the day' I recall loving it 🎭🎩 it's easy (especially with hindsight😉) to criticise it endlessly but being in an open world enviroment, ability to control not just Batman & Robin & cruise around Gotham streets in multiple batmobiles/robin cycle & others.... I completely disagree with this review... this game was flawed for sure & don't get me wrong, it graphics could be better but regardless of all this... It was awesome to get pulled into Gotham so well back in 1998.... 🃏❄️🏂🏻🌨️

It's insane how bad the controls are! It's frustrating, obnoxious and like I said, so ridiculously clunky for no reason at all when a game like Crash Bandicoot was as amazing as it was back then

I know/remember quite a bit about this game's history. I can see why critics didn't like it, but me knowing exactly what to do, where to go, the controls, etc. I play this game start to finish once a year & enjoy it a lot hehe. Took me literally a year as kid to beat the game (August 1998 to August 1999) and now I can beat it in a few days. Extremely confusing even with the strategy guide & online dial-up sites, and also the controls took me a very long time to get used to. But going through all that pain I discovered a hidden gem in this game. I was a big fan of the Schumacher movies as well. For info on the developer, Probe Entertainment made the rushed PS1 port of Hexen in June 1997 (also very confusing controls), which was rushed because the devs were really excited to work on the Batman game when they were contracted to do it in late 1996. The movie was being wrapped-up and they had the source material to start development. Batman & Robin supposed to come out 4th quarter 1997, and it had a cancelled N64 port.
However, I have heard one programmer in another vid's comments a long time ago who was rather frustrated about the dev experience. IICR (foggy memory) his critique was that they cared way too much about fan-fictioning the story as the devs were superhero buffs (why Frosty was such a huge emphasis) and pushing the PS1's graphics, giving barely any time to fine tune the gameplay which was the programmer's concern. This game was a great example of how graphics don't make a game. In my research over the years and how I remembered it in the late 90s, my conclusion why this Batman game ended up this way was like a case of Batman super-fans rushing a PS1 port of Hexen, which should have been an easy Doom engine game, just to have extra time to make high-end PS1 graphics and fanfics.
Even in the hidden dev room, the credits, all the crazy hidden stuff, etc. you can tell the devs were very proud of their work putting a lot of love into Batman & Robin, but they didn't really understand basic gameplay principles. If I was a big publisher in the late 90s I'd hire the Probe guys as graphics makers/console pushers, but not game designers.

You don't need driving all the way back. You can use shortcuts that you can find on map, like "Wayne Enterprise" or "Batcomputer". Wayne Enterprise is a shortcut to Batcave, Batcomputer is a batcomputer, lol.

I think if the Resident Evil games at that time had not used tank controls, we wouldn't have a Batman and Robin game with the same game mechanics. Tank controls always make the gaming experience worse. The only game with those controls I ever enjoyed playing was Fear Effect. And that game would have been a lot better without those mind numbing and pain staking set of moves. If your too lazy to make your character control fluidly then dont make the game.

The game tells you absolutely nothing lmao. It's the least straight forward game ever because it's designed to push the user to follow its repetitive in formula in hopes that you're kinda smart enough to take super limited hints and find the answer to those hints. It's ridiculously tedious for no reason at all
