Thank you for this excellent video and the step by step instruction - with your help it took me a mere 90 minutes to get the job done (minus the welding, which the local exhaust center did for me) and the total cost was R 480 for the gaskets and the welding. Wow! Btw, the cracks on my manifold were in exactly the same spots as shown in the video, so it's apparently a genuine design fault.

Good job Garry, luckily that car is somewhat new, it is hell to remove those bolts on old cars as they are stuck with the years of heat and grime and rust.even the oxygen sensor came out easily, what a surprise that was.
I have the exact same problem, thank you very much I'll now do this by myself. I'm buying tools tomorrow. Of cause the Labour cost goes to a nice cold beer after the job is done. You are the best.

Greetings from Bergvliet. What I really love about all these Vw 1.6l engines is that when reving and accelerating they make a sort of metallic tapping noise from all 4 cylinders which goes away when the accelerator pedal is released, for example, when you gave the car a short rev at the end of the video. I don't know if that sound comes from the exhaust manifold or from somewhere else but the sound definitely comes from the front and as a blind person I use that sound to identify each car. Our 2011 Ford Figo unfortunately doesn't make this sound and that makes it very challenging for me to pick it out from other cars.
Well explained video, looks like it's a common problem for this model layout car, mine also cracked in the exact same pattern, I managed to get it welded and the problem was solved for about a year but it's now since cracked again, would an option of a decat manifold( with out cat conveter)be viable,in other words straight pipe it
Yes, Dumisani, bypassing the cat could be an option, but I prefer to just get a new manifold, I did it for a few customers that could afford it at around R4500 for the part.
Thank you very much for this video. I have a 1.6 polo sedan 2011 model with the same problem. I did buy a new manufold some 4 years ago but it also cracked last year and I welded it. It's now cracked again. What do you suggest I do is there anything that vw is doing to improve polo manufold because old ones don't have this problem. What is the name of a welding rod that must be used? So that the crack does not happen again.? Thanks
Hi Vuyisa, thanks for supporting the channel with your visit, I did a follow-up video on this one it is still in post, unfortunately, the design is flawed and it is necessary to replace this manifold every few years. Gary
Hi sir please help. I have a 2012 Polo Vivo CLP. Whenever I start the car it idle well then after maybe 1 minute or 2 it shows EPC on cluster the minute it shows EPC it starts misfiring and I have to turn off the key and turn it on so that it will idle.
Great video. I opened my manifold and found it has 2 metal gaskets by the engine. The manifold and gasket has oil on it. Is this normal? Oil looks like it drips down and dries on the engine. Oil was never short in the car. Car has 109000km, 2011 model. I owned the car from 50000km and never opened the manifold before. Not sure why it has 2 gaskets.
Great job done 👏👏. Very neat work and well organized too. I have a polo vivo 2013 1.4, mine is almost as loud as that. Should a decat after repairing the manifold be a good option to do?
Hi Dylan, I should not say this but if it were my car yes a decat will be in order after the manifold repair, if the mileage is say beyond 150K, thanks for your visit and contribution, until next time Safe Motoring. GARY
you are a legend..just 1 question...at what mileage does this problem occur? I have a polo 1.4 2011.. I dont know why but when i drive in a residential area and I'm accelerating people look at my car as if I am driving fast...its just noisy on acceleration...you think its the same problem?
I do not think so Lugmaan as the noise seems to go more quiet the warmer the engine gets as the metal expands and tends to close the crack thus making it quieter.
@@vehiclemaintenanceandrepai3790 thanks for the response. when I drive and shes cold then when I coast in gear only I get a ticking noise...if I accelerate or coast in neutral , no ticking sound...then ticking noise slowly fades away as car gets warm..strange thing...

Great stuff Jan, glad to be able to help in this way, yes it is a design flaw by Vw.

It is 1 gasket, it just separated with age, they are usually tacked together, Shaheen.
Thanks! Interesting video!
Informative video, thanks! Quick questions: 1. Did you use gasket maker on the top gasket? 2.
Who did the welding for you? I am in Parow area.
No.

Hi the Catalytic Converter- doesn’t it need to be cleaned or is better to replace it ?

Great video - Would you suggest a branch manifold as a replacement instead of welding it ?
Hi Clinton, this system has a catalytic converter, so a branch is not recommended.
My polo sounds the same every morning for a few seconds then it idle normal
What cud it be
Timing chains could be worn/stretched
Good job! thanks!
