Heard this on the radio this morning and it blew my head off! Remembered how much I loved this as a teenager (yonks ago) but I'm sure this is better than any of the renditions around then. Thanks so much guys.... and that genius Purcell.
💎 💎 💎 "Ridiculous", the man has a full orchestra in his very singing. The arrangement too is exquisite, the end tells how much (if not realized before like me, entranced listening to Barnaby).
what a tempo!!! I find it interesting that what is most likely a very faithful rendition is given by performers trying to show through their appearance that they're something new. They did it on purpose of course, and the effect is lovely.
Very good. Very simialr to the recent performance by Les Musiciens de Saint-Julien, with tenor Tim Mead; same arrangement, except they don't use a double bass..
Recorders need to be put in the front, ahead of the violins. They might be winds but they're not oboes. They really do get lost. Even when the violins are silent, the recording really loses the articulation of the interplay of the two recorders. What happens with the recorders @ 0:56-1:03? Is she lost? Nevertheless, great energy, and a fun performance.
All the Japanese are chuckling, because THEY KNOW ENGLISH.😝 "Strike the Viol. (2x) Crunch (4x) the Lute. Break the Harp, it's of no use; Break the Horn, it's useless too."
Why are the 2 violin players and 1 viola player (less so) mucking about and laughing like kids during the opening section? Do they not realise they are being filmed and that this is disrespectful to the singer? Their behaviour is extremely unprofessional. Yes, I understand - looking around for the harp and flute (recorders in the Baroque period were considered 'flutes'). I get it, but come on guys. I assume they didn't realise this was being filmed. As a professional musician myself, I would not hire these players again, however good their chops are. Perhaps there is a bad relationship between these players and the singer. Huge respect to the other players, who are not drawn in to this childish behaviour. I also assume that the video addition of the CD label was because this got worse. This does not do any service to your credibility.
the interactions between musicians are great to watch, and videos of recording sessions in particular often show us the humour and spirit and humanity (and gelatti t-shirts) of amazing musicians like Sato and Barnaby Smith
You obviously do not know those musicians : they’re enjoying very much what they’re playing, and considering their respective talents it’s such a walk-in the park for them that they even add some nice unwritten ornementations !
Purcell is a rock n' roll star ! YEAH, wonderful ! (voice, orchestra...). Great thanks
Magníficos compositor, orquestra e cantor
Such a masterful production truly seems incomplete to not include joyful couples dancing in step to this song's rhythmic reverie😧🕺💃
When everyone is beautiful, it's an immense BEAUTIFUL that comes; Thank you !

the same story with me this morning while driving the car.
Stunning ! What a voice and such gifted musicians. Purcell would have been delighted with this performance.

Isn't the first violin Mr Sato of the Netherlands Bach Society?🙂
yes, indeed. love his inventive performance here.

Excellent, if not superlative! Tempo perfect. Spirited!
Outstanding version!
The most wonderful interpretation of this beautiful Purcell song I've heard. Thanks so much VOCES8, Les Inventions and specially Barnaby Smith!
Annette Maurer and Andres Scholl
Very fresh and exciting sound!
Love how The Inventions sound and dynamics are so Baroque ! I can listen to this 5 times in a row, the CD is a bit scratched on that track !
His voice is very similar to Andreas Scholls voice. Beautiful
Fabulous!
Got goosebumps :)
Brilliant!
Gorgeous!
Love this!
BELLO!!!
beautifull
Sooo british! Suits perfectly to your voice !
Wonderful

Where is the viol, and where is the lute ?
+Valerijus Jasiulevicius - on strike, I suppose
On that note, there was supposed to be trumpet. We were promised a trumpet.
All the Japanese are chuckling, because THEY KNOW ENGLISH.😝
"Strike the Viol. (2x)
Crunch (4x) the Lute.
Break the Harp, it's of no use;
Break the Horn, it's useless too."
You are being ironic, no doubt. The Japanese probably have an even lower standard of English than the French. A considerable achievement.
Excellent performance. The dress code was not respectful for Purcell.
It is what is known as feral-slovenly. Best not to look.
Its not a bloody performance- its a recording session. You don’t dress up for that.

Fortunately the Netherlands Bach Society doesn’t agree with you and has hired Mr Sato as 1st violin and conductor…

I agree that the 2 violin players were disrespectful. Takes away from this video.
This is far too fast.
It's a baroque allegro. What did you expect.
Nooo it's perfect allegro!
