- How to replace both headlights on your VW Passat (Volkswagen) without removing the front bumper. So much cheaper than paying to have it done.
UPDATE: Vic passed away on June 18th, 2023. We are leaving this video up because Vic loved saving people money. He was an incredible man and will be sorely missed.
Best explanation on the internet on how to replace the headlights without removing the bumper. You have my heartfelt thanks!
Old school.
Well said. Completely agree.
Vic was 100% old school!
Loved this, and very sorry to hear about his passing. I saw his strugle but that didnt stop him BRAVO
Thank you very much. Vic was an awesome guy right up through the end.
Vic was a good man. I removed my headlights tonight and freed up the adjusters. Very sad to learn of his passing. I give thanks to Vic and I am sure that his family must miss his kind words.
Anyone that gave this video a thumbs down should be throat punched. Excellent work, sir.
Thank you for taking the time to do this. You covered all the bases worth knowing. You saved me time, money and frustration!
Thank you very much for taking your time to teach others, may God protect you, rest in peace.🙏🏼
Month's back I watched your video, And I would like to say thank you, your video helped me change my headlights on my passet wagon.
My pleasure. It makes me happy when people can do this for themselves!
Where did you purchase your lights?
This video lead to the successful replacement of my 2010 VW Passat CC Passenger Headlight. Took me around 1 hour as the replacement headlight was not a simple in an out replacement. New headlight needed adjustment at the mounting screws in order to align it with the car bodywork. Great video. Simple but effective. Good job!
I'm very glad the video helped you get it done! Thank you for the compliment.
I also have a 2010 CC. Is replacing the Passat assembly same as CC?
WORLDS BEST "HOW TO VIDEO" !!!
I have never seen a better "how to" video my entire life.
With this video in hand I'm sure the replacement of my right headlight will go smoothly!
Thank you so much for an excellent video :)
Thank you for the compliment and you are welcome for the video. Good luck on the replacement...it is much easier and cheaper than removing the bumper!
thank you so much for an alternate perspective on this repair. Pulling the bumper seemed excessive and is probably the reason the repair at a shop is so expensive. Great video will use as a reference when my parts arrive.
I hope it went well for you.
Great video! Just bought my almost 16 year old daughter a Passat with dingy un-adjustable headlights. Ordering replacements now thanks to this great DIY tutorial. I noticed the FL tag, I moved to PCB in 2016, made a lot of good family memories there. Back home to Cartersville Ga now. If your ever traveling north of Atlanta on I-75 I certainly owe you a beer or 6🍻🍻👍
Very helpful, thanks Vic! Replacing the headlights on our Passat tow vehicle and your video was the clearest and most practical DIY video on RUclips to get the job done. Thanks for Downunder.
I'm glad the video helped. This video is coming up on the 4 year mark and I'm thrilled to see people still find it useful.
This was beautiful. Saved me sooo much time. Im a damn good mechanic myself. However, it is always a beautiful thing to watch the old school masters at work.
I appreciate the comment James. Thank you, very much.
Your description and procedure worked for me on a 2010 Passat Komfort sedan. I lost half an hour to retrieving the hard-to-get bolt when I dropped it and couldn't see where it went no matter what I did with flashlight and mirror. Eventually, I rapped the underside of the bumper cover with my knuckles and heard it rattle around. I took out a screw that was holding the bumper cover on and was able to fish up with a finger and get the bolt out.
On the drivers side, one hint for other beginners is: Although you are fishing around with the braille method from the backside of the headlamp assembly, the bolt is heading in the *opposite* direction, back towards the firewall/cabin. So, you're really reaching under and around the headlight assembly, then reaching back towards your own elbow. Now, for me, it turns out that my wife knocked a hole in the underside of the bumper cover in just the right place on the drivers side. I've never loved that woman so much as when I was able to reach up through that hole and get that bolt on the drivers side. Hurray for road debris.
A local shop wanted $1000 for this job, $230 for labor and $666 for two headlight assemblies. I paid $180 for two headlight assemblies on Amazon. I wonder if they would have accepted the job with me supplying parts? It took me 2 hours, maybe a bit more, not including aiming the headlights that evening.
Epic video and an absolute legend. RIP Vic.
Thank you. He was a boss!
Thank you so much for providing a well lit, well filmed and informative video on how to remove the headlights without having to remove the front bumper. All other videos i watched online were horrible. Yours is simply the best!!!
Our pleasure. And, thank you for the compliments.
Dude this is probably the best how to video I have ever seen. No fluff and very informative, thank you very much
That's a very nice compliment. Thank you and I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Great video! First video that appeared when I searched for this subject. Rest in peace Vic, and many thanks for the helpful explanation.
Thank you, very much. He was a great guy who loved helping people.
Best man on RUclips! He show the easiest way how to remove your lamps. I want you to be me mechanic ♥️ Greets from Poland 🇵🇱😎
Thank you. I'm still kicking it in Florida but don't find myself under many cars these days. :-D
Thanks for this video. My garage had told me how expensive it would be to replace the headlight because of the labor costs involved. The biggest challenge screwing back the inside screw, but the "braille method" prevailed. 👍👏
The Braille method is tried and true! I'm glad you got 'er done.
Getting ready to change out the headlights on my wife's bright red Passat. I have the same problem you noted...insulation falling off the wiring inside the headlight assembly. Shame on VW.
Thanks for a great tutorial. Very much appreciated!
You are welcome. I hope it went well.
Vic for President! Your video is ace! Without it I’d have struggled in vain to do this job as a novice mechy. Thanks & godspeed!
Thank you, very much. We did this video 4 years ago and it blows my mind. I'm happy that people still find it helpful.
I appreciate you taking the time to make this video. All the information was spot on and saved us a lot of money. Thank you sir!
Mission accomplished! I'm happy this helped.
Great job! I’ve come back to this video several times!! Sorry for your loss!
Thank you! I'm happy the someone kept this up. Very helpful.
Hi from England 🏴 great job on the headlight, you have a vw passat and a Lexus, we older guys know the best cars around, i have the same cars, both reliable 😊
Thanks, great tip to remove winkers. Took about an hour and my lights cost £40 each side. Saving us £495 at the garage and also waiting time.
Very good video
That is awesome! I love to see people saving money.
If this guy with his hands can do this, there is literally ZERO understanding for any young man not to do something like this
GG, gramps!
I appreciate that. Thank you. The essential tremors are a pain. Thankfully beer or scotch settle them down. 😁
Seriously could not have done this job without this video. Thanks for the knowledge Mr Random!
You are welcome. It is my pleasure. I love saving money.
Thank you! Im not paying almost 1K for this when i can do it myself thanks to your teaching!. Thanks again sir.
Thank you so much! Following your advice we were able to change the offside headlight in under one hour. Really useful video, you are to be commended.
That's fantastic! Nice work and I'm glad it was helpful.
You are the best teacher make a best video to help people DIY save money. Thank you very much !
That was awesome. I love seeing old school work ethics.
4 yrs later and still an excellent video!
Thank you! And still my only video. 😂
I've been wanting to replace the front parking light on the passenger side of my 2006 Passat, but couldn't figure out how to get the light assembly out. Thank you!
This video extremely helped. I replaced the driver side bulb in about an hour. The one bolt under the headlight is a little tricky to navigate but I figured it out and pooping off the electrical wiring harness with a quarter was a little harder but it all worked out.
This is great! So sorry for your loss. This will be uselfull next time I need to fit new bulbs! I suspect once one has mastered this it'll be quicker than fiddling around blind with the stupidly tight bulb access!
Thank you. Vic was a great man. Good luck with the light replacement. It was a whole lot easier than taking the car apart.
Thank you from Canada! Excellent description. You saved me a bundle by showing how to do my HID lights myself.
You are welcome. I love saving money!
From Monterrey, Mexico: Thanks so much to take the time to post this video, save my day, my respects Sir, God bless you.
Thank you for this perfect „how-to-video“. You saved me a lot of time and finaly my day. Great explanation and easy to follow.
Best regards from Germany and again a big thank you.
You just made my day! You're welcome.
Excellent video! I pulled my passenger side assembly out today. Wrapped the wires to save money for now. It works now; so, I will wait to order a new one at a later date. Anyway; I now know how to get it out and back in fairly quick.
Really good explanation and detailed steps.
Very helpfull. I could change the headlight without removing the bumper. It saves me a lot of time. Thanks a lot for those clear advices.
You are very welcome...I'm all about saving time and money!
NOTE : Vics great video here is on the passat with the v6.If you have the 2.0 Turbo you will need to do the drivers side the same way as the passenger side, unless you have really skinny arms. The good news is that the bolt on the drivers side is easier to get to and I found I only had enuff clearance to get a stubby 10mm wrench on it,it works just take your time. Thanks Vic
Great insight and advice. Thanks.
@@mr.random6294 Thank you,Saved me the hassle of pulling the front bumper cover off.Hope you are well.
Many thanks for showing the way on this. You have saved me a fortune and in time money and garage hassle. Extremely helpful video.
I'm very happy that this helped you...especially the saving money part!
This was very, very, VERY helpful. Thank you. I did the easy side first and...I'm not as mechanically inclined as you so I had to take out the blinker. But that is still way easier than taking off the bumper. Also I found I had problems disconnecting the power plug. I found that you have to PUSH in to get it to release, just pulling on it did not work for me. Anyway, GREAT video. Thank you very much. This was WAY easier then taking off the bumper and taking off the wheel which is what some people did in their videos. GREAT job Vic. :-)
Thank you for the compliments and the suggestion on the power plug!
Great video! I'm tackling this tomorrow. Thanks for taking time to show this process.
I hope it went well and saved you some $$$.
Great video I was wondering how to replace headlights thank u
Thx man.
Great vid.
All I needed to know👍
Thank you from Australia 🇦🇺 Legendary
I was very impressed with this man but having used this method on a car with evidence of a touch on the front bumper, if I had my time back, I'd just remove the bumper.
Nice, this job comes up on saturday. Thanks :-)
I'm doing now too Aug 25, 2020, this video makes much easier thanks.
Excellent video Vic, thank you so much!
I was dreading having to remove the bumper!
And now thanks to you man, I don't have too.....
I agree with the rest best 'how to' video yet.....
Thank you very much. I appreciate the compliment!
Great video! Just bought an old Passat 2007 and the headlamp needs changed best regards from Scotland
this were the Best Video ever seen on this replacement Man you Saved the Day Brother . Thanks From Evansville in . Saved me a Fortune .
I’m so glad this helped and thank you for the compliment.
Nice job! Will be trying a similar job to replace the Xenon HID bulbs on a right-hand drive 4Motion Passat. Will see how much they reversed!
Did u achieve it on 4motion xenon headlight?
Greetings and Respect from Romania
I have to replace my AC Drier and I find your video very usefull
All the best!
Thank you very much for posting that video .. you helped me to fix my headlght without removing the bump ..
& Iam sorry for the injury in your hand
My pleasure! I'm glad the video helped you save some money!
Thanks awesome car and video. I got a 07 passat and a 10 wagon and love both of them. Very nicely explained how to without removing the bumper.
Gut erklärt, mein Herr! Well explained & well done, Sir! Greetings from Wuppertal/Germany (I got some
condensed water in the headlight due to seal damage I think)
Great vid Sir!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just ordered my headlamps - can't wait to install them!
Nice job of explaining , thanks
Thank you sir! I will be ordering the new headlight assembly today and I greatly appreciate your sharing of your expertise. ;)
Thanks Pops, your trouble is much appreciated.
great video! watched 3 times, I just replace my passat passenger side low beam hid bulb in 1 hour. appreciate for your sharing!
Hi, did you change an D1S xenon lamp with this method? Did you succeed? Or was it a simple H7 Halogen bulb? I want to change my both D1S Xenon bulbs and I am wondering if this will work...
@@alexandrosbitoulas i changed d1ssuccessfully.
@@shawng5197 Thank you!
Ripped off greedy mechanic who tries to steal from inteligent man. Well done sir, my respect.
It makes me happy each week to know that so many people are saving big money by doing this themselves!
Best info I’ve gotten for Volkswagen
The best vlog! This guy is fast as fire
I appreciate that. Slower these days but still love to fix my own stuff. :-)
@@mr.random6294 you are incredible sir!
many thanks for your excellent instructional video.
Having just completed the job in this way, I think I would find a video that shows how to do this taking the whole bumper off, because that bottom bolt is just so damn awkward to get to!
Thanks again
Yes, it is a pain to get to. However, not as painful as taking off the whole bumper. It took an extra 5 frustrating minutes of using the braille method to get that hard to reach bolt.
I'll take your word for it not having done both. Tricky job but not worth paying out for, thanks again for the vid!
Thank you so much for the vídeo, I will replace the head light of my Passat myself thanks to your help ;) You did a great job and vídeo, congratulations and thank you very much again :) Greetings from Brazil ;)
Thank you for the step by step instructions. Will change mine out tomorrow.
Thank you for the video. You saved me a bunch of time and effort. I found them at carparts, com for under $140 for the pair. I just replaced both headlights in my wife's Passat in a little over an hour and a half. If I had a 10mm ratchet wrench, I could have been done in a little over an hour. I couldn't use the socket and ratchet, just a wrench, though.
I’m very happy the video helped and saved you some cash!
Thanks this was helpful to me....may God bless you for your sharing and also more as you trust the Lord in these last days.....
I sure hope these last days aren't that close, but I guess you never know. Thank you for the blessing regardless. I'm glad the video was helpful and hopefully saved you time and money.
Thank you, good stuff, I will do this job tomorrow, regards from Poland.
Good luck!
Also thank you for the work you demonstrated us.
@Carlos Me too. Did you managed to do it yourself?
@@twardy90 Tomorrow will do, courier lost my package, was waiting another one week for lights, I will let you know after.
@@twardy90 Done and dusted, take me 2h. Trick with tape is very good as there is very little space, I have thin hands and that's an asset in this job, I spent 30 minutes screwing the hard one. Looking for a hole and screwing in without a view, blindfold.. But im not a mechanik so if I maked, everybody will do it :) Good luck.
Awesome explanation. Precisely what I needed.
Thanks a lot and God Bless you Sir.
most excellent and best explaind video on the net, thank you so much
It was my pleasure. Thank you for the compliment.
Thanks sir, real simple once we watch you do it. Well, except for that lower 10mm t30.
Rest in peace vic. ❤
💗
Just replaced the passenger headlight in my VW passat wagon. Thank you for the step by step help with out taking off the bumper.
Brilliant Video! Thank you so much for sharing your experience and ideas.
You are amazing. Thank you very much for that guide. Really useful, easy to understand, step by step explanation. Good job! Take care.
In your Passat headlights are cheap and it easy to replace. But in mine HID Self leveling there no room what so ever . But good job thank you for a vedio.
Great video. Thank you so much for posting this video. Saved me lots of headaches. 👍
I'm very happy to hear that!
Woaw mister it was perfectly explained 👏
I'd worked and the long bolt was a bit of pain in the *** lol !
Thank you very much for the video
Nice work,i have a blue b6 passat, this video really helps for the replacement work, thanks.
Thank you so much for this video. You saved me hours of work.
It was my pleasure!
Thank you so much sir!! I will try to tackle this myself!! Of course with the help of this video! 💜👍
Did u try it ?
@@Nathan-wi2rj only the driver side 😥
Amazing I've been trying to crack this for ages, thank you
You're welcome.
Great video....very well explained...hats off to you mr 👍
Thank you so much for posting this video! I fee confident now that I can take this on! Well done! 👍🏾
thanks for the heads up, ill be doing this job tomorrow morning.
I found that simply finding the difficult bolt took the most time, a lot of blind fumbling, once I did manage to get to it, I going the spanner was of no use. I managed to get it out using a small ratchet and a small extension like the gent in the video. Otherwise a great video tutorial. For removing the wiring harness from the lights, there is no need to force anything, use a hook on the small loop of plastic on the plug, and push on the plus towards the light, at the same time as pulling the loop away from the light, it pops out easily. The, thanks for the vid Vic.
Many thx. for the most helpful and clear instructions. You’re the best.!😀
Man i admire you! You are an awesome dude. Thank you for helping me do this job with ease!!
My pleasure. It was a fun project for a penny-pinching retired guy.
