When you watch the DVD commentary, the show creators said that they intentionally crafted the scene with Snoop and the hardware store salesman to be the opening moment of season 4 Ep 1. Season 4 is, as we all know, about the Baltimore School System (yourselves included, i waited to make this comment until the patreon is suffciently far). This scene's aim is to show the viewer what it means to be a good student and a good teacher. Snoop listens carefully, asks appropriate questions, and uses her own real-world experience (gunpowder) to reinforce her understanding. The clerk for his part, probes Snoops knowledge base to get a sense of where she is and then meets her where she's at. And lastly, as a good student Snoop doesn't try to correct the clerks incorrect use of "Cadillac" to describe a "best-of-the-best" nailgun. Obviously, when the store clerk was younger the Cadillac was a choice car but post year 2000 it was eclipsed by the Lexus. That's why I love how she respectfully keeps her knowledge to herself and then says to Chris "He mean Lexus, but he ain't know it". Terrific show writing.

It also has the effect of showing of what a normal person Snoop can be, and that she's not a deranged maniac just because she's a coldblooded killer. In the world she lives in, violence is her job, but that doesn't mean she's a cartoonish villain, just somebody doing what she's good at and surviving along with everyone else, and she can still connect with other human beings and share an appreciation for the tools of the trade. The Wire makes the point over and over again that the worst outcomes in American society are lived by people who in other circumstances could have been completely average citizens, but who got dealt a bad hand in life and did what they could with it. The implication of this, of course, is that if any one of us found ourselves in these situations or having to live these lives, would we be able to handle it any better or more morally than they did? Are we any better than any of these characters, or are we just lucky enough not to have to make the choices that they did?

We all need to take a moment to appreciate how lucky we are for what we're about to witness. This is going to be one of the best reactions to a season of television any of us are ever going to watch in that the reactors are the most appropriate for the material they're being presented with.
There are a litany of writers, filmmakers, journalists, historians, political analysts, moral philosophers, and of course American-residents who can offer a plethora of commentary on what is regarded as one of the most socially important seasons of television ever made. A season which has had more academic discourse following it than any other previously in the history of the medium, and probably ever will. In each chosen field, you'll have the respective experts who have and will continue to put into words that which the majority of the population simply cannot.
What cannot be theorised, studied, or grasped by academia however is empathy, compassion, sorrow and grief. In this regard, the two girls are the most qualified for this season. I don't need to explain to anyone at this point the maturity, sensitivity, and intellect the girls have towards societal issues and people in general, but it bears repeating that the comprehension and subsequent emotional investment of characters is so paramount to socially-conscious art. When the art is holding a mirror to civilisation, we are by design met with the reality of our own appearance. As such, our understanding of the reflection, conscious or visceral, intellectual or emotional, will be one of the greatest tools we could possibly have for collective introspection.
In the same way I view the interviews, the commentary tracks, the books, the college thesis, and the adjacent historical context as canon to understanding season 4 of The Wire, this reaction series will be of equal importance for its ability to reach that which goes beyond thinking: feeling.
Both for this series' reaction and that of Band Of Brothers, this channel has been a lot more than just entertainment for me.

Also, they didn't use the nail gun to kill anyone in this episode, just to board up the house where the left the body (oh! and they covered the body with quicklime, which causes the body to dehydrate, preventing the proliferation of bacteria and putrefaction, basucally making the body into a mummy).

Listen... I can't promise it's going to be easy. Or even feel worth it at first. But it is. This season puts so many things into perspective. It's important to watch to understand the world a bit better. And when I say that, I don't mean the world *of The Wire,* I mean the real world, because that's what The Wire is about
And if it's any help, Season 5 is quite a bit less emotionally draining. At points, it's almost silly. There's something on the other side of what will be the utter despair of Season 4 (Ordinarily, I'd not say something like this because spoilers, but after three seasons, they know The Wire isn't a happy show)
Also, I remember the comment thread she's referencing at 11:09 🤣It was Snoop and Bunny Colvin. The original commenter and I liked Colvin the most, but Snoop was our close second. Part of the reason you guys are so terrified of Snoop is that she's not an actress. The Wire took their casting very seriously because you can't tell the story of Baltimore without Baltimoreans, and Snoop is one of the prime examples of them hiring authentically. Felicia "Snoop" Pearson is played by Felicia "Snoop" Pearson, who was born extremely prematurely in Baltimore to drug addict parents, raised in a foster home, and worked as a drug dealer until she was convicted of murder at age 14. She was released in 2000 and met Michael K. Williams (Omar) who got her auditions in 2003 for The Wire.
After the show's conclusion, she went back to the drug trade and was arrested during a raid on her home in 2011. She ended up getting probation, and while she's done little bits of on-screen stuff since then, nowadays she mostly just gets by in Baltimore as something of a local celebrity
Lastly, you are most definitely not overreacting, Lola. You just understand The Wire

Random explanation in case you missed it.:
Bodie says to Namond when Namond is wants to leave the corner early: "If it wasn't for social promotion you'd still be in Pre-K." Social promotion is a system in the US where kids that fail too much are simply promoted to the next grade whether they understand the material or not. "Pre-K" means before Kindergarden. So he's saying if they didn't promote you automatically you'd still be below Kindergarden. A salient point about the concept of "social promotion" is those schools are fundamentally failing at educating kids because some higher up, some non-teacher, decided that it was better to move kids along than make sure that the most vulnerable kids get educated.

I think when you start a story or a new character is introduced- there's a little charity that the viewer/reader is obligated to afford the writers/character themselves, even with whatever's feelings you're lead to feel or not feel.
I think that's what needs to be had with Tommy, even if that necessitates focusing on what's occurring around him i.e his campaign manager Norman's funny riffing on him in the car or other solid-dialogue/scene setting, vs the man himself or the belief you need to feel any specific thing; and then see where his arc takes you.

All I said is that there's a level of a chance/charity to give his plotline to find it worth following right alongside the children, not that Tony was good or likeable especially in an episode where his behavior is petulant/at one of his lowest points.
If they call him a stock character than yes, I think they've missed something regarding him and it's possible to nail a prediction but what makes the road there worth deeper inspection.
I think his plotline could have been afforded more charity on their part this episode.

disagree there. they've shown a very reductive and incomplete understanding of not only Carcetti, but also other political characters. they've (particularly Lola) specifically gone to group Carcetti, Tony Gray, and Clarence Royce as characters that are so same as one another, that they're not worth any consideration as individuals.
this is like in reality, how an electorate would look at their candidates during an election and determine that there's no point voting because of partisanship, or establishment politics, or institutionalized corruption.
it's the type of voter rhetoric that rants about how the "system" is awful, and never changes, but is unable to see that their own mindset is very hypocritical.

Born from a drug addict mother inside prison, thrown around foster homes, becoming a corner kid at age 12, and arrested for homicide and charged as an adult at 14. She's just genuine and her tragedies are the product of the system the show portrays. And she's funny as hell, too. She was recently reminiscing about the show on a podcast alongside Method Man and it was hard to stop laughing . It's really amazing how bright and funny she can be especially when we understand that the intense and kinda scary side of her we see on the show is just as deep a part of her personality.

When you said Avon couldn’t beat Marlo what’s Bodie gonna do. The show showed that Avon was beating Marlo and Marlo and his crew were in hiding towards the end of the third season. The only thing that stopped Avon from winning was him and Stinger betraying each other and Avon being sent to prison, but you are right Bodie on his own couldn’t beat Marlo

Couple names to know are Melvin Williams and Ed Burns. Melvin plays the Deacon who helps Cutty set up the boxing program last season and Ed Burns is one of the creators/writers of this show. Melvin Williams is the real life inspiration for Avon Barksdale. He ran dope and coke in Baltimore throughout the 60's and well into the 80's. Ed Burns was a BPD Detective who helped arrest Melvin using a wiretap in the mid 80's. Ed Burns would eventually leave BPD and become a Baltimore Public School Teacher (much like Prez did).

@25:35 They poured lye or quicklime (which may be the same thing?) on the body. It speeds up decomposition. And they killed the first guy with a silenced pistol, not the nail gun. The nail gun is just for sealing the boards back on the vacant homes where they leave the bodies inside. Which is obviously why the police are puzzled Marlow's group is taking over so much territory without killing any rivals. Don't worry, it gets better for the kids (some of them)... and worse for others. It's a good story line this season.

Been waiting to post this again. Lyrics from the David Axelrod song, "The Little Children". This season has some of the best storytelling out there. And remember, being Radical is about getting to the root, and that's the truth.
Capable of good or evil, so who will lead you
Feed you to the beast cause politicians don't need you
    Being a child is illegal
"No bids?" said Samuel petting his bald eagle
    Then two voices spoke:
"We do, we bid" said Trouble and Hunger
"We bid for their life and limb
When they get to be too many
We'll take care of them, like our own
We'll hide them in secret places
Where no one can hear their moans."
"Uh, uh. I bid, I bid!" said Scrounger, screaming
    "I bid for them all
I'll teach them a thousand things
To lie, to sneak, and to crawl
They'll sleep in my place like maggots
And if they work out like I want
You won't have to worry. Haha..."
    "No, I'll bid you higher!
And even higher, if I have to"
Said Crime with his wolf's grin
"I love to lead the children
Down all those nice paths of sin
They'll all bunch up to steal
The great cities' streets they'll fill
And they'll grow too old to pity
Just right for the cops to kill
    Give ME the little children
You good, you rich, and you wise
And while the busy world spins around
While you shut your goddamn eyes
And your judges will all have work
And your lawyers will flap their tongues
    And your jailguards and cops
Will be the fathers to your young"
    Hahahaha
    Auction off your future

In the scene in hardware store with the nail gun, Snoop is not knowledgeable about nail guns. She is talking about real guns. The man suggests using nail guns with gun powder, and Snoop connects because she knows about guns and calibers. "This nail gun has .22 caliber." "Oh sure, I've seen that caliber (of gun bullet) rattle around in ppl's bodies" It's why he's slightly confused by what she's talking about, and she chuckles.

And not to say that this season isn't entertaining because it is and I love that you feel that way about this season but I enjoyed other seasons of other TV shows way more. Breaking Bad Season 4, GoT Season 4, The Shield Season 5, Hannibal Season 2, Stranger Things Season 1, LOST Season 4 to name a couple.

@@monadreher2428 I really wish people would react to The Shield. It was one of the shows that ushered in the era of Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, Dexter, etc. It is up there with The Wire and Sopranos as one of the greatest TV shows of all time. And there is literally like one person on YT who is doing reaction videos to it, and the reactions are terrible. I wish our girls would do The Shield next. That would be epic.

@@Inquiringmind0 You ain't never lie friend. Speaking nothing but facts. The Shield is easily one of the 🐐 Top ten show of all time imo and number six on my personal list. Not to mention that the pilot and finale are literally some of the best first and final episodes of a TV series, like *ever* The girls absolutely should react to that series next. And I had no idea about someone reacting to The Shield. What's the channel name? Not going to bother watching as I'm going to take your word for it but just curious.

      @@monadreher2428 Spittin' facts my friend.
Yeah, while The Shield is probably 5 on my list, in my humble opinion (not so humble), I think The Shield is _the_ best series finale of all time, even rivaling Breaking Bad, which is number 1 on my list of best shows. That is how good it is. It hits so hard.
As for the reaction videos, there is one person I found on YT, his name is KrautWatch. The problem is that his reactions are literally like 10 minutes long. Reducing and hour of TV into 10 min is just not worth watching. He also has no real commentary, just laughs like a dolt at scenes that are not meant to be funny. I watched the first season with him, and then peaced out. It wasn't worth it. I recommend you watch one of his reactions, just to see what I'm talking about, it's only 10 minutes after all, just so you can see why he is not a good reactor.

Yeah Imma have to check it out for a good laugh friend.

However, the deeper and higher he goes the more pressure he's under to let go of some of those high morals if he wishes to continue up. You'll have to keep watching his journey in order to see if or how much he caves into that pressure.
