18:07 Just another example of Templeton's bullshit - he spends a day getting handed material for a great potential story about the working poor completely by accident, and instead of doing anything with this gift from the journalism gods or even filing it for later while he chases down his lead, he just gets exasperated that he didn't manage to check off his assignment and flounces out of there. You really feel how much contempt David Simon had for this particular breed of reporter in Templeton's character, he was very thorough with this one lmao
Your guys' expressions - shock, then delight - as Jimmy and Scott make a big bowl of lies together was so entertaining to watch. New year, new couch, same wonderful reactions!
Gotta love how Levy basically told Herk “oh you know if police somehow gets this number we’ll be rolling in cash” about a guy Herk would love to bring down. He couldn’t have been more explicit about it. And Herk fits Levy to be honest, they both don’t much care about morality, just do their job and are egoists. Herk couldn’t give less of a shit about justice, he wants Marlo to go down purely because of the camera and to look cool to Carver. That’s some Saul Goodman material.
I guess you could dial from Serbia but Marlo’s telephone number is a real number and has been active for the past 20 years since this episode aired. If you dial it you will hear a message from I believe episode 7 or 8 of this season. I believe the story is a fan in Baltimore bought the number and has been keeping active with that message for the past 20 years.
I've been a staunch Wire fan for over two decades... Still consider it the best series ever made. This piece of trivia literally just made my day!! Thanks.
Happy new year! Regarding the short discussion at the end there, you might have already picked a new show to watch after The Wire, but I would still like to recommend Steven Universe. It starts out very kid-friendly, but the episodes are short (only 11 minutes) and it builds and grows into such a beautiful story that I am sure you two would love. Also, let's not forget, congratulations for doing (or perhaps you're already done) a fantastic job with The Wire, it's not a show that lends itself well to reactions, so it's all the more impressive how insightful these discussions are.
With regards to your discussion in the preview about Lester and his coming around to the idea of the fake serial-killer instantly, I agree 100% that that is one of the noticable things about season 5 and its plots not having the same time to breathe as in previous seasons. Another thing is, and I'm not shitting on the newsroom storyline here, compare how you felt about the new characters in season 2 at the half way point to how you feel about the Baltimore Sun character's at this point. Just another example. Having said all of that, it's still The Wire, thankfully!
The Baltimore sun people do feel very preachy. I know they only had one season to work with them, but look at say Colvin. We see him half a season before season 3, we wonder about what he is doing, why he is doing it, and once he lays down some knowledge, we know he has decades of experience behind it. But then Gus shows up, and he is both morally correct, and he instantly starts giving big speeches, basically summing up the entire thesis of the show. Feels un-subtle.
@@transformersrevenge9 you are completely right. There aren't any good character in the newsroom plot, Gus is not a good character at all, it's very black and white, 100% good jornalist vs awful jornalist, there is no ambiguity at all. We never feel that we really know these characters, everything is very superficial about their personal lives, it's diferent from season 2, when they got deep in the characters personal life, their problems, conflicts and and dramatic arcs, there are nothing like that in this season. But the overal is very good, the worst of the wire is great yet.
@@jvbcb3214 It's a combination of one of the writers leaving, and some of the writers being former unhappy newspaper people. So they basically used that plotline to dunk on newspapers. Honestly the smart thing would have been to at least introduce a couple of reporters in season 4, covering the election. So let's say Scott and Gus are already introduced, and we learn about their views and troubles. And then in season 5, the larger news room gets introduced, and we see Scott joining it, and having issues with the straight laced Gus.
@@transformersrevenge9 I think time was also a problem, season 5 is very short compare to another seasons, 2 or 3 episodes more would probably be enough for a better development of the characters.
Templeton is a great example of the filthy nature of liars. The thing in normal people's brains that makes lying hurt just isn't working in them. Or even malfunctions and gives them a buzz of pleasure. But the debt is still there, and inflicts the pain on everyone around them.
The Wire cannot be predicted based on Hollywood fiction. It was written by a former Baltimore cop, Baltimore teacher and Baltimore reporter. We will see what would likely happen in real life, not what ANY OTHER show would typically choose for plot development. The Wire is not a scripted show; it is a LIVE FEED.
@@234i9 Yes it is outlandish that Omar would jump out of a 4 story window and survive. In the real world he would have jumped out of a 5 story window and walk away. As the real life Omar did in fact do. That guy who Omar is with, the old big guy, that is the real Omar the character is based on. He is the one who jumped out of that window in real life.
HAPPY NEW YEARS! Please make a video specifically just of you two talking bout the year how it was etc, always love hearing your opinions on anything it would be a great video
This might seem weird of a recommendation, but Star Wars Andor that came out last year is basically like The Wire in space. It's only one season, 12 episodes, and the best part is that it doesn't rely on other Star Wars media for reference. It stands solidly on its own. If you two need just a little bit more Wire after.
Comparing Andor to The Wire is such a weird take, lol. How are the shows similar in your opinion? I guess they're both about people struggling/fighting against powerful institutions? And they're both very bleak. But that's about it, and there are plenty of shows that fit those criteria.
@@1lamafarmer There's really very few shows that take a microscopic dive into things. I'd put shows like Mad Men, and Better Call Saul into that category, and Andor too. The amount of care and accuracy that the showrunners of Andor put into it really reminds me of The Wire. It's a mind-boggling character study while at the same time having a large enough scope to make the main character feel insignificant. This is why I put these 2 shows together.
@@MM-vs2et I suppose I get what you mean, but even the fact that you mentioned a "main" character gets to the point of how different these shows are. The Wire isn't called "McNulty", is it? They both use characters' perspectives as a way into a richly believable world, but Andor has far more focus on a single narrative, and a single perspective. It also exists in a fictional setting, so in order to take in the full "scope" of Andor, you absolutely have to have a good knowledge of the SW universe and its history (and future context). On its own, without all that knowledge, it's a fairly tightly-focused show with clear dividing lines and binary conflicts (even if it presents grey characters on either side). It's nowhere near as broad, intricate or ambitious as the wire or mad men, and I don't think it's trying to be.
@@1lamafarmer I guess that the 'narrowness' of Andor, when compared to the Wire or Mad Men might be due to it existing as 1 season, and one season only(for now). I would then compare that first season of Andor to the first season of the Wire. And the first season of Mad Men too. All of them seemingly focus on the main character, but nonetheless is leading towards the trajectory of widening it's scopes. Much like how The Wire isn't McNulty The Show, Andor is also isn't just Cassian Andor The Show. It's more fitting for it to be called "The Rebellion" or some other more broad term. This is likely due to brand recognition and just marketing. But the point still stands, it has every potential to be as deep and broad as those shows. Honestly, I'm recommending it to them because it seems like a good "dessert" show after The WIre. It's 1 season, 12 episodes. And expectations after watching a masterpiece in storytelling like The Wire must be pretty high, and not many reactors, actually scratch that, none of the reactors that have watched Andor really grasped it's deepest meanings, and who else in this spaced can offer such depth of analysis other than LM?
Don't be so happy about Herc, Herc didn't do that for police work, he didn't Do it to help Carver or Lester. He did it for his own selfish reasons since day one. He did it to get Marlo back for the camera he wasn't authorized to have in the first place. He never owns up the to, or admits when he's wrong. It could have been anybody it just happened to be Marlo Stanfield.
It's been a while since I watched Season 5 but my first thought is that Marlow is playing the cops. Marlow knew that Hurc would give the phone # to the cops. So, Marlow is plotting to embarrass the police with false information.
