Avon meeting with Marlo and then Avon setting up the meet with Marlo and Sergi are such short moments, but they are easily some of the most important ones of this season. The little interactions in their dialogue, displays not only the way they feel about each other, but the type of chess they're playing. The King Stays the King.

She shows up in another brief scene later this season for which the actress is not credited as she has no lines. Her story is amazing as it's only 4 brief scenes in the entire series and yet it tells a little story of addiction and redemption in under 8 minutes total. My fave little Easter Egg storyline from the wonderful writers, one of which is the actresses father.

If you're sad about having no more Wire to watch there is another show made by the same people and featuring a lot of the same actors (in very different roles) called The Corner.
It's short, only 6 episodes, made before The Wire, but in many ways feels exactly like The Wire, just more focused on one particular element. I would highly recommend it, definitely a show that stays with you.

I can 10000% see Jimmy doing something like that, and when you factor in they literally started the season showing how the cops manipulate shit to get the result they want (the "lie detector" test), and then you add in that McNulty has been no stranger to lying and manipulating shit in the past... and it's pretty much on brand for the way the show presents both him and some of the tactics used by the BPD.

      YW and thanks.
Two things more I'd like to add...one is that it's not anymore "ridiculous" than the real life stories, uncovered countless times,of cops railroading people whom they know for a fact are 100% innocent of the crimes they're framing them for and we see these victims end up serving years, decades even,in jail as a result. Many of them have died in prison for crimes they never committed. And far too often the cops and prosecutors,if they were in on it,who do this get slaps on the wrists for their transgressions. Qualified immunity needs to go. Period.
Second,on your statement about Bunny and "Hamsterdam",yeah,as a Baltimorean born and bred I can remember when then Baltimore Mayor Kurt Schmoke advocated for the decriminalization of drugs. Across the board. In 1987. He was jeered and mocked from every corner and now state after state are taking the first steps with legalizing weed. Always loved that Simon gave Kurt a cameo in the episodes where Royce has people in his office debating whether they should get behind this after Hamsterdam goes public.

On this show, Gus works for Gale (David Costabile).
Funny thing, BTW, the newsroom bosses who keep thwarting Gus are based on real life editors that David Simon, the creator of The Wire, had problems with, when he worked at the Baltimore Sun, or "Sun Papers" as they call it in Baltimore. One of these real editors was named Marimow in real life, and that was why Simon named Lt. Marimow that on the show, wanting to get in a dig at his old enemy before he knew if he would get to do a season about the news business.
The guy who played Marimow, meanwhile, Boris McGiver, a great character actor, appeared on House of Cards as a news editor, with a very high standard of journalistic integrity, who undertook to investigate and verify another reporter's story about a crooked politician. Kind of funny how it comes full circle.

I get what you're saying about the media in your country. In USA, we have a similar problem. We have a bipartisan system, and one side of that system pretty much has control of almost all news, media, and information. If you say anything on any of their controlled platforms, if it is something that a certain party disagrees with, or feel is contrary to their agenda that week, what you say is labeled as 'misinformation' and you are censored, or even banned from the platform, sometimes MULTIPLE platforms. MOST public news on television is also propaganda designed to further that agenda. Our first rights as citizens have become a joke in the digital age.
Bottom line, no matter what you hear about from our media, believing it is ridiculously stupid no matter where you're getting it from. You're only hearing a fraction of the truth, if any at all.

    Let's look at Jimmy's resume 👇🏿
    - Got Wallace killed asking him to be a witness
    - Got Bodie killed asking him to be a witness
    - Is a deadbeat dad
    - Is a habitual cheater
    - Is an alcoholic
    - Constantly commits crimes to catch others committing crimes
    - is mutilating dead bodies to create murder cases which is not only immortal but highly illegal
All this and viewers can't even bring themselves to call Jimmy a bad guy. FUCKING HILARIOUS! The odd thing is we can all easily come to the conclusion that criminals like Marlo, Weebay, Chris, Snoop, Stringer etc are "bad guys" even though they're actually the ones that always get held accountable. They get hunted down by police, thrown in prison, killed on the street etc but the Jimmy's of the world face zero consequences even from the audience. Viewers can always find the nuance and goodness in Jimmy's heart even with all the evidence to the contrary. I wonder why???

    • @Kadaspala
      @Kadaspala 11 месяцев назад +3

I mean there's an appreciable difference between ordering/carrying out several murders to facilitate running a local drug empire and being a deadbeat dad alcoholic cheater.
Jimmy didn't intend to get Wallace or Bodie killed, and he definitely wasn't the sole or even primary cause so much as the naive inciting incident.
The thing with Jimmy is he's obviously supposed to be a fucked up asshole with a good heart underneath. He's an exploration of someone who could be a good upstanding member of society...except dealing with hierarchical alienation, ineffective bureaucracies, systemic corruption, political plays, etc sparks so much impotent rage and overwhelming hopeless depression in him that he copes with alcoholism, sexual thrill seeking, and being something of a sardonic dick with main character syndrome.
The Wire is all about how institutions and systems shape characters. McNulty is no exception. He's not bad or good, he's a sad flawed pitiable man with aspects of both.
      Context matters.

He knew talking to Bodie was a no no in the streets. Especially outside in public. He didn't care in the moment because all he cares about is solving a case. The same for Wallace. The same for the mutilated bodies and the other illegal ways he uses to solve cases. There's a difference between caring about the community and caring about solving a case. You don't do those things if you actually care about the community you serve. This dude is the epitome of selfish.
Also....YOU LITERALLY JUST PROVED MY POINT! I'm not saying he's a serial killer I'm pointing out that you still can't even call him a bad guy. That's it. You can't even call him on his BS despite the laundry list of misdeeds.
This show points out how the system and it's institutions all work together to play a part in the downfall of society. The government, police, schools, media etc all have an equal part in producing the crime we see on the streets but the only ones who get the blame and are called "pathetic" are the people we've already designated criminal. Those criminals have lived a lifetime dealing with the shortcomings of this system and they deal with more trauma and less resources than Jimmy but you don't give them the privilege of nuance and complexity. I'm pretty sure they're depressed too. I'm sure they have rage and turn to addiction to cope as well. NOBODY CARES!
The worst Baltimore cops, politicians news outlets etc still get called upstanding no matter their actual track record or how fucked up they actually are.

Are you intimating that it's a race thing alone? Because if it was Bunk, I think people would still find the nuance and goodness in his heart. It's just how people view these things. I'm not saying it's right, but people have always followed along with narrative structures, whereby there's good guys and bad guys. The brilliance of The Wire is that nuance, but sadly it's lost on some people.

@@brownsey1 I never said race is the lone factor BUT yes, race is a huge factor in how Jimmy is perceived. You cannot talk about the Wire or the criminal justice system without talking about race.
Race alongside Jimmy's occupation of being a policeman feed into stereotypes society has about who is good and who is essentially bad. You can't compare Bunk to Jimmy because Bunk is not doing the things Jimmy does because he actually has a code/moral conscious which is a big reason we like Bunk. On the other hand Jimmy has literally given you nothing to like but you somehow still come to the conclusion that he is essentially good. Viewers find nuance and complexity to his character that alot of time isn't even there while he continually breaks the law and skirts his personal responsibilities of being a father and husband. Meanwhile a character like De'Londa (Namonds mother) who is admittedly a horrible parent and also gives you no reason to like her but has committed zero crimes is still seen at face value. There is no nuance or complexity given to her character or situation by the audience. That's not a coincidence.
Lastly what Jimmy is doing is not only unlikeable it's criminal. Say it with me... JIMMY IS A CRIMINAL!!! The things he is doing actually deserve serious prison time but because he is still seen as essentially good that reality is never actually pondered unlike the "criminals" who are black that we've already deemed essentially bad.

@@Iambigjones I think you're misinterpreted what I said. I'm stating that if Bunk was doing those things we'd still view him in a similar light. We know he doesn't, as he simply doesn't do it in the show, but he's a womaniser, a heavy drinker, and he's been shown to do certain things to make a case that some, our reactors for instance, find distasteful.
I actually agree with you about Jimmy. He's a piece of sh*t! It's glaringly obvious upon a rewatch how morally corrupt he is. He definitely has a good heart to a point, but it's lost in his ego to be the smartest in the room. I also agree about the race aspect, but I asked about race alone because I wasn't sure if that was your angle.
I don't think it's all down to race with Jimmy. As I said, I believe if it was Bunk doing similar people would react the same, but there's an inherent racial aspect to how some view things in the show.

Honestly, this is my least favorite season of The Wire for this exact episode. Just the whole thing that Jimmy does and what it leads to in later episodes.

The one real weak plot line in the show. Season 5 was still really good but that held it up from being as good as the previous 2.

I liked it. but honestly i feel like these type of comments influence the reactors expereince with the show. a bit of sneak spoiling. I put it in the same category as people who comment "oh you're gonna love/hate this character"

Nope, no weak plot line, there's countless cases in history, especially since the 80s, of cops manufacturing murders/cases and this is as real as it gets. The serial killer angle might be dramatization but so is Hamsterdam in season 3. What The Wire does is showing how something would happen if it actually happened. It did so multiple times. You have no critical skills if you think this is a weak plot line when it's PERFECTLY written and obsessively researched.
Season 5 is a masterpiece and just as relevant as season 4. Even more so these days.@@albertocruz5032

So, in approximately two months, Lola & Milena will be starting (here) and new show with actual human beings in the cast? Have they said what it will be? 🎉
