- Yes, this man is evil, do not be mistaken, however the argument I am making in this video, is that Chris isn’t a character who’s actions are driven by evil intentions, but more so fall into the category of the banality of evil.

In the show my heart broke for Dukie more than anyone else. He was more deserving of having Namond’s life with Colvin. The kid had no one & he was so lovely & intelligent.

Maybe Chris was raised by a military man. OR he was trained as a hitman and follows his training. As far as his relationship with Marlo, he was loyal, but he’d also disagree with Marlo. And at times Marlo would look to Chris for approval. Their relationship wasn’t simply boss and soldier. They act like they grew up in a group home together.

Chris, although he's a sadistic person, is not stupid either. He gathers Intel before taking on a task, whether he's ex military or not, that's just being smart. A person who surveys his environment before striking usually avoids surprises.
I’d argue Chris to arguably be the biggest threat one on one to Omar Little, don’t think many, if anybody in the show matched these two guys on a tactical level

I got a similar vibe. He has been inside for sure. But it is a military vibe, most definitely. Speaking as someone who has also seen both places too.
I believe Marlo was smart enough to have a disciplined, strong and smart leutenant to do his work, and not some street dude. "SNOOP" was a G but Chris would have never let little Mike to take him out, she was about action and Chris was about strategy and purpose to get the job done.
She under estimate Mike, whole time he was really learning from Chris. That why he was able to kill her using the strategy that Chris taught him.
He definitely seem ex military. I don't think his loyalty is why he listens to marlo is for just that reason. I think he has seem marlo do all the things he's done before we meet him. They already tried to book marlo on a couple murders and there's gotta be others that the cops had no clue about. They had 4 with the MO 2 to the chest and once in the mouth which means chris knows marlo isn't just giving orders. Ppl are more likely to respect someone that they know done the stuff they asking you to do.
You ever pay attention to Marlo alway saying “our” when he addressed Chris. Mutual respect Marlo knew the drug trade, Chris knew the Game and protected thier organization at all cost. Chris was really the man in that organization.
A lot of good points, but also "just following orders" isn't an excuse. That was the entire point of the Nuremberg trials, that even a loyal soldier has a legal and moral obligation to disobey grievously immoral or illegal orders. Doing anything you are told isn't the sign of a loyal or good soldier, it's the sign of a fanatic.

I have a theory that Chris might have some experience, but possibly from being a child soldier out of Africa. Suffering atrocities and sexual abuse, like many child soldiers that numbed him. Yet, at the same time, appreciating the importance of ur family despite being a cold-blooded killer.

I had a similar take but I never thought of him being a child soldier. I assumed he might have had a father who was military and controlling but also physically and sexually abusive. He ran his kids like boot camp but also violated them physically and sexually. Chris probably went to the military as well but couldnt assimilate enough to be the kind of soldier they wanted him to be. He found the kind of king he didn't mind pledging to in Marlo. Would love an explanation on why that loyalty exists.

@@Snaz.17really enjoyed this Bro. The Wire was just one of those shows that was too good to even be put into words. The fact that it has never been nominated for a single Emmy is plan suspect. I remember a political figure(, definitely a figure who was high up the ranks maybe a Senator) actually pleaded with the creators for one more season. Chris Partlow was definitely one of my favorite characters. I had written a screenplay a few years back which was picked up by an independent production company to be made and the actor who played him was talked to about a role. It didn't end up happening though but it was an exciting time back then.

Right down to his words and expressions (i.e. pledge fealty; his reputation becomes a reflection of his king's decisions; etc even the music--i.e. Most Dramatic and Classical Music by Secession Studios). I think Chris is a former cop for the same reasons you believe he was a soldier in the military.
Some of your insights here are pretty cool, which is to say that Chris and Snoop are absolutely interesting and complex characters with believable psychological makeups, and it really does make sense that Chris might have been in the military, but your assertion that Chris's actions are not evil because he's just following orders is truly disturbing. I am actually disturbed, in real life, to hear another human being make such an argument. If a soldier does evil on the orders of a commander or sovereign, the commander or sovereign becomes guilty of that evil, but the soldier remains no less guilty. Pure deference is the lowest possible human moral level, and I know of no ethical framework that suggests otherwise. This is true even in the case of actual soldiers, who have a much greater claim to moral absolution than Chris, based on their having chosen to give their loyalty to an organization meant to defend and advance the entire society. Chris, despite wanting good for his family, has knowingly chosen to give his loyalty to someone who murders for money and power-someone who is, in the truest sense of the word, merciless. The act of giving his loyalty to Marlow is, itself, evil, as is every murder Chris commits on Marlow's word. You don't seem to understand what was meant by the phrase "the banality of evil," either. Eichmann was no less evil for the fact that he was following orders, nor for the fact that he held no personal malice toward the millions whose murder he helped to organize. His banality doesn't let him off the hook. You seem to have taken it to mean "the banality of that which would have been evil if it weren't so banal," which is honestly the most profound and disturbing way in which you could possibly have misunderstood it.
I don’t recall ever saying that Chris isn’t an evil human being? I’m just taking this argument, and Chris’s justifications for his actions to the extremist level. All I argue in this video, is simply that his actions aren’t solely driven by the intention to harm innocent or guilty lives, and therefore Chris would not fall under the category of absolute evil. As with every character, fiction or non fiction… we all have our reasons for acting the way we do, no matter how twisted our actions!
You might want to go back through the video, if that was your intention. At the very least, there must be times when your intention is to state things as the way Chris must be perceiving them, but where you do not explicitly say "Chris is probably telling himself," etc. Because in lieu of that caveat, you say he isn't evil a bunch of times. You say he never commits an evil act because of evil intentions, when in fact, all his evil acts are motivated by evil intentions. You say he's not motivated by wickedness or malevolence when he kills the delivery lady, but to kill an innocent person for the advancement of yourself and your partner in crime is purely wicked and purely malevolent. Chris is not sadistic. The whole point of the Eichmann quote is that evil is just as evil when it's done without emotion. Chris's emotionlessness only makes him more terrifying-no less evil.

Ive never been in the military, but im a street guy and when i walk into a new place. I count the exits, rooms and the number of people in the room and calculate who lives there and who dont.

The thing that made the wire great is that it was so realistic in how it portray the details and realities of the worlds they ventured into. In said world civilians get killed as a casualty of street activity. That being said, if it was your mom working as a delivery driver restocking shelves at a corner store and she was gunned down simply because she was there, would you still say ''I don't think Chris was evil." ? He can be more than one thing. He can have layers. The Wire was great at humanizing the layers of people, even the monsters, who often are seen as one dimensional in entertainment and in media. He can be a great father, a loyal friend, and a remorseless killer. That's why Omar was so beloved and respected. As violent as he was he had a code and didn't attack civilians. I always saw Chris like a hood version of Javier Bardems character from No Country for Old Men. Not quite as dark but close.
I disagree with Chris's decision being the most selfless. What alternative did he have? Rat on Marlow and have that go with him into prison? Even if he took his chances at trial straight up he still wasn't going to beat it they had his DNA. He was going to jail for life no matter what unless he rolled over on Marlow and that wasn't an option because he wasn't going to be known as a snitch in prison. And probably out of some basic principle in loyalty to Marlow he wasn't going to do that either. His family just happened to be able to benefit from situation

I spent a lot of time in Camden, NJ in the late 90’s, early ‘00s. Both Camden and B-more are extremely similar, though Camden at the time was more dangerous. One thing that’s extremely exaggerated in the show is how organized any of this, and that there is some sort of code these guys live by. There isn’t at all. They often snitch on each other. Any organization is coming from Spanish speaking crews, who actually run everything. The street level guys are mostly dumber than a box of rocks. They love to talk, I’ve even seen a group of guys get arrested for smoking pot right outside a police station.
This serious? This insightful as anything, thank you for sharing this man. All shows nowadays paint this world to be an organised one…
@@Snaz.17 Ive been clean for over a decade but i work in “recovery” at a methadone clinic across the river in Philadelphia now, so I still have one foot in the street so to speak. One thing the show brings up that’s kind of taboo but extremely prevalent is Michael’s situation with his mom’s boyfriend or whatever. Chris must’ve been in a similar abusive situation with how he handled that situation. The show was pretty realistic when it came to showing how the individual corners operate, save for the fact that only a couple of”big” guys operate basically half the city. The reality is that it’s a more block to block small time operations. It’s all cartel product and obviously there is a big time distributor, but it’s no where near what organized in a way like the mafiosi, how it’s portrayed in the show. Up until five years ago, every week there would be a neighborhood crew getting busted. An older uncle would supply his sisters teenage kid with product because he’s too scared to work the product himself, the kid gets busted, rats out the uncle, the uncle rats out his supplier and that supplier rats another guy who is only running slightly more product than he is. The guys actually pushing the large quantities are unknown to these crews. The suppliers change all the time to keep them in the dark. They know these corner crews are untrustworthy and will snitch in a heartbeat. Plus, now the product is so deadly. During the Afghanistan conflict all the product was coming from there, once that ended now it’s all coming from the southern border, and it’s synthetic, not actually heroin. Philadelphia is run mostly by Puerto Rican connections, it’s why the city was the first to have the fentanyl boom, and now it’s the tranq. Check out Kensington Philadelphia videos on RUclips. This is what I’m dealing with at work each day. I have a client or two dying of it each week. To be honest, I don’t know how much more I can take.

This is set in the 2000's but the structure of the streets is taken from the 80's. Things were organized. It was that way in most cities. Older guys went to jail and left the youngsters on the street making their own rules. The show is trying to show that transition.

Chris was simple a good worker. He was loyalties lied within real west Baltimore corner hustlers. His job was muscle/ enforcement. And he was a loyal lieutenant and righthand man under Marlo. I believe that those two grew up together working their own corners until Avon's crew, Bodie's corner crew, started stealing their business from Fruit, another one of Marlo's lieutenants. Marlo was content with the corners he had control over until Bodie started stealing his customers and Avon sent in a whore to spy on him. Mario's ambitions amped up after he investigated Prop Joe for his role in having him robbed at the poker game amongst those old school players who he respected and wanted to have his name added to their ranks. Marlo had plenty wise counsel. Chris was just one of them.

Chris being former military, especially when nothing within the show directly supports this, seems like a big stretch. Now, you could say that soldiers in the game operate in a quasi-military fashion, and Chris is a paragon of these disciplines, I think you’d be spot on. He doesn’t need to be military to be fiercely loyal to Marlo. He’s a good soldier, in the sense of the game.

I think Snoop is very understood lol she’s a violent bully who enjoys inflicting pain onto other people. The scene where Mike is questioning her and Chris while they sit in the car about whatever June Bug said, you can see their differences right there. You can tell that Chris has asked himself the same questions Mike was asking at that moment, but tells himself it’s not about wrong or right, it’s about what he has to do, but Snoop just doesn’t give a fuck she just wants the opportunity to hurt someone, it’s not about right or wrong or what she has to do. It’s about what she CAN do.

Your argument seems to depend on the idea that committing an evil act isn’t evil as long as you're following orders. You assume this without proving it.
