"Who really won the war?" isn't the question, though - the two sides called a truce. Who stayed the king, though? "Stayed" is a hint, for anyone unsure of the answer
That prison meeting scene said a lot. Totally different scene from the one where Marlo met Stringer. When Marlo met Stringer, you could see him sizing Stringer up the whole time. No uncertainty. He KNEW Stringer was weak as a gangster. Stringer’s all looking around and talking about bugs and what not. Marlo’s only looking at him. Stringer’s whole conversation was fear-based and Marlo picked up on the fact that he was trying to TRANSFER fear into him, but since he couldn’t do it in and of himself, he tried to prop up the government as something Marlo should fear as a means of trying to change Marlo’s behavior towards him. He was talking like the government was his big brother he was gon’ get to come beat up Marlo. Stringer thinks he’s showing strength by displaying his knowledge, but he only showed his weakness. Meanwhile, it’s totally different with Avon. Marlo didn’t come to see Avon. And yet, even though it’s in a government facility, Avon shows himself to be the pillar of strength in that environment. He “got the drop” on Marlo, so to speak. Marlo’s attitude with Avon is completely different than it was with Stringer. Night and day difference. Here, he’s not sizing up Avon. He’s too busy trying to figure out what’s going on right now. He doesn’t see fear in Avon. Far from it. The looks on their faces when Avon steps out. Avon is a picture of assuredness. His attitude is that of the master of all that he surveils. The utmost poise and security in the midst of boogie men all around him. And he only confirms all this once he sits down and speaks. Marlo, on the other hand, is visibly shaken, stirred, confused, concerned, uncertain, uncomfortable, just out of his element. He all looking around like Stringer Bell, while Avon’s eyes are focused on him. Shocked and awed. Marlo, who is usually stone-faced and unflinching in the middle of adversity(recall when he was robbed at the card game by Omar) is so unsettled, he had to let out a tell. Lets out a little bit of an under the breath chuckle in order to feign like “it ain’t no thang” when really his nervousness was pouring out of him by the gallon. And Avon could see it. “Surpriiiiiise” 😂🤣
I think that Marlo caught the barksdales at a weak moment because Avon and Stringer didn’t move as a unit. A house divided will fall. However in the end I look at if they each achieved what they wanted from the game. It’s important to note that what they both wanted was not monetary. Avon wanted respect while Marlo wanted fear. The scene with Marlo stealing the candy in the store in front of the guard is a perfect illustration of this. If you watch closely in the scene Marlo looks at the guard dead in his eyes as he takes the candy. He WANTED to get caught. When the guard confronted him about it he had him killed. Now the guard showed respect to Marlo and kept repeating how he wasn’t stepping to him. But to Marlo it was the fact that the guard didn’t show enough fear that bothered him. He wants others to fear him while not respecting them in return. Avon never operated this way. This is why he scolded stringer about Ok’ing a hit on a Sunday. Avon is about his name. He is about being respected and he in turn respects the game. So even when it appeared Avon was losing if you pay attention to his demeanor you NEVER saw him sweat it. When Avon gets frustrated in season 3 it wasn’t necessarily because of Marlo. It was because Stringer was operating in a way that would denigrate his reputation and his name. This is why Brother Mouzone’s words cut Avon deep when he told him this is not about money it’s about his word and his reputation. Once you see Avon in season 5 he is still respected in the streets. His demeanor with Marlo is very relaxed and you can tell him “losing” didn’t affect him the way Marlo might have thought it would. Avon achieved what he wanted in the end. With Marlo however he didn’t achieve the fear from others that he desired. Marlos fatal flaw is that he can’t accept that fact that everyone is not going to be afraid of him. And you can notice how that begins to destroy him in the end. He won the game as far as staying out of prison but he never achieved what he desired. It was never about the money to him. And the audience can see how that begins to eat away at him in his last appearances. So sorry for the novel but I love the analysis you are doing on this series.
🎯. You right brother👏🏿👏🏿, because Marlo went back to the streets and had a confrontation with those guys on the corner all because he wanted ppl to fear him. Great content brother.
Avon was a boss.marlo couldnt make his move with the greeks without avon word...plus jacob still could have killed him marko walk right into line of fire..slim charles was avon top enforcer after weebay..avon was smart he had joe and marko right before his eyes they didnt even realize it..at the end slim was the man...need an episod 6
That clip with Cutty not shooting Fruit just shows how much of a respectful guy Slim was. “Sorry man I stepped in your shot.” When really, Cutty completely froze up.
Avon won. I always wondered why Avon would give up the identity of the connect to Marlo. The more I analyzed this move, it actually showed his lack of respect for Marlo. He knew giving Marlo temporary access to the connect would not weaken his position because Marlo didn’t have the skill to keep it! He essentially rented the connect for $100,000 knowing that Marlo didn’t have the street acumen/network to keep the connect long term. If you recall, when the police “followed the money” they discovered that Avon’s business wasn’t just drugs, it bled into political contributions, Realestate, grand jury leads, etc. At the end of the day, Avon had an organization with ties to New York (Brother Mazone). Marlo simply had a crew. The Barksdale family regained control of the connect through Slim Charles in the end. Marlo, not knowing the true value of the connect and unable to hold on to it because of lack of political connections, sold it for a mere $10,000,000! Avon was still the King, from jail.
In the end. Avon won. He kept slim charles in the mix to be his eyes and ears and used his connections to get Marlo to wipe everyone out. Then when Marlo and the crew got arrested. Slim became the head boss. This kept Avon's seat warm while he finished his sentence. That's the thing I always loved about Avon in the show. When he lost he found ways to use his resources to get back and people who thought they had him beat.
@@lordoffaiyum9727 I don't know about that. Street business sure, but Stringer wanted to take it to the next level, go legit by investing in property and make way more money with none of the stress. Avon couldn't live that way.
@@slaterslater5944 yeah but you seen how stringer got used and abused in that business…and stringer messed up when he was divided with Avon on the Muslim deal
6:23 That's why I respect Avon so much. Cause even tho he wanted to win, he could still empathize with the fact that despite Cutty's ruthless past he was actually growing a conscience and wanting to change as a man. He respected the game and the man's maturity even tho it conflicted with his own personal interests.
Marlo and Avon could have justifiable grounds to kill Cutty right then and there for leaving the gang. People get killed for that. Avon let Cutty walk. You think Marlo would have? Possibly, but less likely. Marlo killed the security guard for trying to be a man and standing up.
@@digitalScribr Avon also represented the Respectful "Old School" and Marlo the ruthless "New School".The Old School had rules, such as the Sunday truce. The New School didn't.
I think the dismantling of the Barksdale crew is what allowed for the rise of Marlo. Losing bird, stinkum and Webay gutted them. Combine that with there battle with Omar and stringers betrayals, the end was inevitable. They lost all their good muscle and where left with a bunch of undisciplined clowns(botched hit etc) the good news is Marlo could not hold on, Avon can pry rebuild when he gets out if he wants.
I dont think Avon could just come back and take the crown. Marlo's rising was a sign of times changing.. Today's new young street dudes don't follow the codes of yesterday. Avon was hustling during the end of an era, so he followed certain procedures and codes. Marlo is a representation of the younger generation. They wanna be feared and will take as many lives as possible to achieve it in the quickest time frame. They don't have the patience to observe the rules of the game and work with others to avoid violence. That's the mindset of young adults today, which is why we see so many gangs as well. Most don't care about the money or respect. They simply want the reputation and fear. And they're willing to do decades in prison just to achieve it. Doing stuff in the community like basketball tournaments and boxing gyms to build a better repoire with the community never crosses their minds.
Avon was a gangsters gangsta…I’m 30 and I think Marlo represents the 16-24 years that’s outside today..especially how little respect he had for how things were traditionally done
King be King facts but Avon Likes Marlo so let me continue the story. When Avon got out him and Marlo found each other. Then they go with Slim and fat face Rick and built a new team with most likely Avon at the head
Marlo just showed the old heads something they couldn’t see coming! No respect no fear no worries, shit people shit themselves upon seeing his death squad in the hood. Now in the end he got fucked but you know, all in the game.
I mean it can't really represent todays youth since the show was filmed almost a generation earlier. Todays 16-24 year olds were 3-11 year olds when season 4 was aired.
@@sertu1462 it’s the exact same dynamic tho…lol nights don’t respect older niggas (for the most part) the major difference between 2004 (I was 14) and a 14 year old n 2021 is that social media allows what would have been considered Subcultures or underground trends behaviors etc. to have mainstream followings and influence..

The Avon/Marlo War was Old School values vs the New School ruthlessness. Avon got out of jail and thought that the Rules of Street life was still in play. Marlo, a new School kingpin, who seems to come out of nowhere in Season 3, dosen't follow by such rules. Which is why he was able to outsmart and outwit The Barksdales at every turn in the beginning of the War. Marlo's crew was younger, more calculated, more disciplined and more souless and sociopathic then the Old guard of the Barksdales. But as you see in the sitdown between the 2 "Kings" in Season 5, you see Avon, while in prison for a long time, and not even around in Season 4, still commands a presence, to Marlo and the Audience. This is something that can't be forced, like Marlo tried to do throughout the show. And of course the Final Scene of Marlo, semmingly having everything, Fights a couple of Hoppers on some Corner, a split second away from getting killed, because they didn't know who he was. But they knew the name of Omar, and im pretty sure they know Avon as well So, I think that Marlo won the Short term War, Avon won the Long term War
In the end Avon won as he crashed Marlo's meeting with Sergei and Marlo didn't have Chris and Snoop even though it looked bad for the Barksdale crew for some time. Avon was also buddies with Sergei and Slim had the connect.
At the end of the day, I think Avon won in the long run because Marlo wasn’t remembered when he got out the game. The streets honored two of the baddest dudes in the whole show: Avon and Omar. Think about it. Just remember the last scene with Marlo on the corner. The corner boys talked about Omar and didn’t know who Marlo was. In the prison, Marlo had to go through Avon to get the connect. Dropped by bodies doesn’t make you the king. The king stay the king. Boom
Marlo won the battle but Avon won the war in the long term. Marlo only won the war because Avon’s organization was falling apart. Stringer was working against Avon, Wee-Bey, Stinkum, and Bird were all gone. They were fighting Omar, Avon getting locked up, police was on them crazy. All these factors weakened the barksdales a lot causing them to be far from their peak. But the jail scene between marlo and Avon is what really solidifies that Avon won in the end. First off, Marlo walks into a room and sits at the 2nd booth expecting to see and speak with sergi but then everybody else begins to walk out and Avon pops his head out with a grin on his face. Marlo then begins to look around and gets a kinda nervous look on his face because he knows that if anybody could get to him in a jail it would be Avon. Avon then sits down and and says “suprise” giggling like a child showing that he isn’t taking the situation seriously while Marlo regaining his serious demeanor is still a little bit nervous. Avon then lays out Marlo’s whole plan infront of him. Showing him that he is the middle man the one person he needs to get to the Greeks. Also showing marlo that he’s in full control and if Marlo doesn’t listen to what Avon says and do what he tells him to do then he won’t speak with sergi. Avon then tells him that if he wants to speak to sergi that he has to give Avon’s sister 100k. Something marlo is clearly opposed to but he sucks it up because he can’t get around it. The whole scene shows how even though Avon got locked up he still retained most of his power and respect. Being an “authority figure” in prison. Then when Marlo gets arrested he has no choice but to give up the crown if he wants to stay a free man, forcing him to give up the one thing he wanted which was the crown. Marlo then becomes a businessman that leaves a party with business like people because he feels out of place, he then approaches 2 corner boys who are talking about Omar who was the one person that insulted Marlo and Marlo couldn’t get to. Marlo disrespects the corner boys and ask if they know who he is and they have no idea, Marlo then pushes them off the corner and notices a cut on his arm. Licking the blood and smiling because he realizes he loves the game but he can’t get back to it. The camera then changes to an open street shot to show nobody in the street but Marlo. Showing how Marlo is now a nobody and no more known/relevant than the average corner boy. Meanwhile, Avon is still in prison but he’s still respected and known. “The king stays the king” Marlo only held Avon’s spot for a temporary time and lost it in a worse way than Avon did
Marlo won the battle but Avon won the war... even with Avon in jail, Prop Joe had the line not Marlo. Without Avon's approval he wasn't gonna get to the"greeks" neither. Once Marlo knocked off Prop Joe, he was only the king for a very brief time. Avon had longevity at the top and was King of the west for years it seemed to me... but nobody stays on top forever, that's just the game for you. Always....
Also Slim Charles his luetinent has the connect to the Greeks now so if or when Avon finally gets out, he's back in the game with a strong connect and real estate now that Marlo is gone.
@@isaiahedwards6586 Avon already has the connects to the"greeks", he put Marlo on to Sergei. Slim payed his dues to get to the connect, I doubt he's just gonna fall back when Avon gets out. All hypothetical but good conversation.

@@pedroenciso9082 game is the game forever and a day, would u rather have a wire reboot or a wire prequel detailing the early days of the barksdales? Either sounds fun but yet again wire wasn't a soap opera like drama to where it would favor either.
The biggest crime in the Wire: Cutty never used the uzi. There was so much violence blue balls in season 3 because Avon had Slim leading a team of scrubs smh. If even just Bird was around, Mount and Fayette would be cleaned and polished for a Barksdale crew lol
Avon won the war! Marlo went to jessup and guard says number 2 where he sat. Avon comes in and laughs in his face and sits at number! Check mate! Marlo needed Avon in order to get the connect so that tells us who was really that dude!
Overall… I believe Avon stayed the king. Because your right, when Avon & marlo met in jail …Avon did demonstrate to still be superior to marlo as a leader. I believe marlo won the war tho, but only because stringer Bell destroyed the organization from within.
Had Avon answered the phone when Slim Charles was sitting on Marlo, Chris and Snoop, war would be over. I’m curious though, if Avon’s team was healthy and full (mean Wee Bey, Stinkum, Ronnie Moe and Bird was around) how different would that war be? Lol.
@@DsgSleazy That’s kinda the point tho right? We wouldn’t have seen Marlo rise to power if he had to face all of Avon’s muscle. But given how basically everyone talks about Weebey, and the fact that his threats towards his wife while serving consecutive life sentences in prison seem to carry weight, dude was probably a badass mf before the show started.
Great video my man, I just subscribed. You're very smart and very easy to watch. You get your point across in a relaxed calm manner which I really dig. A huge factor that brought up a lot of emotions from both characters is of course Omar. He was a thorn stuck in each man's side. He's a cross of both Marlo and Avon personality speaking. He plays by the rules of the game like Avon. A good example is when Marlo people came at him on a Sunday morning while he was taking his Grandmother to church. He craved fear and respect but was brilliant, disciplined, and calculated. He always stayed a few steps ahead of both men, while still never breaking his own code of ethics. He never killed a citizen or someone who didn't deserve to die. He stayed untouchable and his will was unbreakable. I think he affected Marlo the most. Losing was not in his vocabulary and Omar made him look like a straight fool and Omar consumed a lot of time in Marlo's head. Omar's actions are the only thing that Chris ever kept from Marlo, and that says more than words can describe. Taking up space in someone's head like he did with Marlo is just as effective as killin one of his people, Think back to " My name is My name" scene Avon's mentality was not close to effected as Marlo's was by Omar so I got to add like 2 points to Avon on that tip. Two other events are worth mentioning, Marlo showing up in Court when Avon was getting sentenced is a plus one for Marlo, but I did and still do kind of respect that about him. The other was Marlo trying to get in with the Russian. Marlo thinkin he had the clout to just show up and think doors would just open for him, was a nice slap in the face to his ego. I loved seeing the expression on Avon's face when he let Marlo know that he didn't have it like that and had to do some work for him to even see Sergei's face, plus one for Avon. In the end I gotta give it to Avon. His crew is still there and his bid isn't that long. Marlo pretty much lost his whole crew and the connect. Yeah he has his freedom, but he can't build back all he lost before Avon comes home. Both characters where so complex and this show will always be relevant. Watching it for the first time or the tenth time I always learn something or catch something I missed before. It shows all sides of life and people involved in the drug game whether it's an addict, hustler, police, or innocent bystander. You really get to know these characters and can easily compare them to people in whatever city you live in. It's done so brilliantly and I highly and strongly recommend to take the time to watch it if you haven't before. I guarantee you'll gain a new perspective on things and will take something with you in the end. Great video, thank you for taking the time to make this, it was extremely well done.
Avon won the war. Think about it… Marlo couldn’t get to the connect (through the the Russian) without Avon’s help. Avon wanted Prop Joe dead for turning Stringer against him, so he helped Marlo get the connect, knowing that Marlo would kill Prop Joe in the process. He also knew Marlo couldn’t wear the crown for long with all the bodies he dropped, and would eventually have to give it up. Marlo eventually sells the connect and at the end we see Slim Charles and (can’t remember his name) speaking with the connect. Avon will finish his sentence and when he gets out of prison he’s right back on top with Slim Charles as his number 2. War is Chess and Avon played the game well.
Damn you made a few good points. I agree with most until the end....because slim Charles reverting back to muscle or a #2 guy is not likely to me. After stringer died, any hope of Avon coming home on top died also. Plus Brianna told Delonda (wee bey wife) that his money dried up, he couldn’t even afford to give money wee bey family (the man who sacrificed himself for Avon’s cause) Avon portrays to extort Marlo for the 100k but honestly he desperately needed it.
I don’t know if slim will be number 2 but I can see him making Avon a partner especially if he was in on Avon’s plans from the inside. Slim is big on loyalty and honor and Avon displayed that he didn’t turn on no one who didn’t turn on him. Slim values that
You reading A LOT into what's not there. The Wire was very realistic....this aint Power or Empire. Avon's done. Avon comes out of Prison with nothing. If anything....given the theme of the Wire and how everybody turns into what was before them.....Avon probably just becomes the next Cutty.
I just found your channel and I am absolutely binging your Wire vids. Your take and deep dive into these characters is second to none. Great job and thank you
I got Avon winning because at the end Marlo had to go through Avon (who was running things inside) to get the connect when Avon was in jail. Avon also protected Chris I'm sure because Chris ended up in jail as well. Avon won because it's more than killing on the streets.
The Wire is real cause Chris did shoot Avon but in the pen whatever city you from that is who you are who you roll with check out American Me all is forgiven and forgotten in prison
Marlo won the battle not the war. You’re highly tripping my guy. Omar himself singlehandedly dismantles marlos crew, the boys were ruthless but that’s really it Like Dangelo said “the king stay king” in the end Marlo still had to come to THE KING to try to wear the CROWN which was solidifying him with that connect which you need to be king Avon’s crew did get weak once he left, that’s because bitch stringer was in charge running things. Empires go through hard times, which Avon did but he was about to literally blow up Baltimore before he got snitched & Avon clearly running the jails. He would’ve came home to a nice position with his feet up, especially with a loyal friend like slim Charles who Avon ALWAYS been good to unlike Marlo. Slim played his position right with Marlo that’s why he lasted. He was the smart pawn that made it to be king like Dangelo said... This “The wire” you gotta read between the lines. These chess references aren’t used for no reason, the writers used them intentionally to show you which characters are aligned with which chess piece
Damn. You caught details I overlooked and put everything together. I also liked how you followed your words up with clips that exactly matched what you were saying.
Avon won the war the second Marlo had to go through Avon to get to Sergei to get to The Greek which Avon figured out Marlo's intentions real quick. All in prison. That's welding power something Marlo could never do. In hindsight Stringer really didn't respect Avon's intelligence when it came to the ins and outs of the game.

Marlo walked away from the war with his life, his freedom, his money but he still didn't get what he truly wanted to be Legend in the streets like Barksdale. Even behind bars Avon had more pull and connections than Marlo.
I understand that ''pull'', but, when you talk about key things about Marlo, like ''his life'', ''his freedom'', ''his money'' (allowing him to venture a free man into politics eg), it is easy to see why Marlo would be considered the one who came out on top.

Like chess, Avon made enough moves to have Marlo trapped but then he got arrested before Slim Charles could attack so Avon would have won but like a timed game in chess the clock ran out. The number of pieces lost does not determine when a checkmate will occur. It just makes it more likely but you can get a checkmate if you have less pieces on the board with the right strategy.
Facts sometimes you gotta sacrifice your queen, almost like Marlo did with Chris at the end or Avon giving away String. Like the dad said on Fresh, a queen is just a pawn with fancy moves.
It was really the division with String that lead to the Barkesdale’s demise. Even at the very end, the only reason the Wire picked up Avon was String gave him up. Slim had Marlo insights but the cops got to Avon before he OK’d the hit. Even Chris injuring Avon was related to String being out of pocket busy with the co-op, when he normally was cruising around with someone like Slim, scoping things out and reporting back to Avon.
Avon also underestimated Marlo's gangsta. That's why he got touched. You are right about Stringer though, that boy began slipping once he sat on the throne...
@@digitalScribr Avon didn't underestimate Marlo, he went to war with him because he respected him. While everyone was tryna figure out how to recruit him, Avon knew off jump that Marlo wouldn't bend. They were cut from the same cloth.

Only reason why I think Avon lost in season 3 was cause he had to deal with the stringer business, Avon lost his "queen" and pretty much didn't have the same drive he would of had if stringer was still alive and not causing trouble. Stringer was Avon's "shield", without the defensive protection it made him an easier target for Marlo

Can we just highlight the actions of 1 of Marlo's top shooters. This dude (w/ afro) was shooting on his opps, while using the car as cover, AND still scored a cleaned headshot. 3:10 Makes you think differently when Marlo says, "speaks to the quality of Barksdale's people."
@@kingDrAgOnZoRdS When Cutty wanted out and Avon had no problem with it.Then giving Cutty money to fix up his boxing gym, you don't consider that having morals??
Avon won. Think about this: Marlo needed Avon to get the connect. When Marlo was willing to sell the connect, the Co-op needed $900K to buy it from Marlo. None of the other members had it so how did they get it? What if Avon had his sister put up the money while appointing Slim as his #2? If that's the case, then Avon would be making the money while still having access to Sergie if he ever wanted to get a line in with the Greeks.
@@Cen_TexLegend she could have used that money to make some business deals and flip it into $900K. It's about as plausible as the remaining co-op coming up with money they didn't have. I'll make a video on it soon.
That could be possible but why would Avon need to put up $900k for the connect when he had a link through Sergei? The co-op only tried to raise the $10 mil because that's what marlo demanded for access to the greeks. Avon wouldn't need to go through all that trouble for the connect, meanwhile the 100k was just a way to tax marlo.
Avon was like santino off the godfather. He got careless and reckless that caused him to lose. Plus stringer wasn't helping I never realized devon was looking at the suv. It was going to be a stalemate, until stringer snitched. At the end the streets won, Avon rep stood alive and marlo became an unknown
Yea devon was paying too much attention to the truck but that’s not what made Chris make his move tho. It’s was the fat ass nigga in the carry out ordering all that food 🥘! What sealed the deal was when the solider that got shot threw his bag of trash out of the back window ( which this dude completely leaves out 🤦🏾♂️) which alerted him it was multiple ppl in the truck ! u even see the window half way down before Chris shoots
Marlo won the race, Avon won the marathon, he couldn't even get the Greeks without paying Avon and he lost it all in the end The King Stay The King, Marlo wasn't on the throne long enough to take a shit
That's why Avon's true rival, was always Prop Joe. Which again illustrates, that Marlo was a placeholder twice. One for being a placeholder for Avon and two as his rival.
Yes snoop was lying to fruit in a couple guys about how stringer bell was begging Chris for his life. Trying to bargain money for his life…now stringer did try to bargain for his life but it wasn’t to them! God! I hated marlo for spreading that rumor no respect at all!
Her telling that story was funny though lol knowing she was full of shit but that's how it goes sometimes some will never know the real story just like in real life.Just like Bodie thought D was weak for killing his self but little does he know of what really happened
AVON LOST THE GAME BUT WON THE WAR WHEN SLIM CHARLES MADE IT ACROSS THE BOARD TO BECOME A KING OR A POWER PLAYER. AVON STAYED ON TOP. MARLO BECAME UNKNOWN WITH NO CREW. REMEMBER, WITHOUT AVON THE CONNECT WOULDN'T EVEN SPEAK TO MARLO. EVEN HIS SEAT IN THE JAIL VISIT TO TALK TO AVON WAS #2
Interesting video. Avon only lost the war because of Stringer. First, he willingly gave up all of that territory while Avon was in jail. Second, as soon as they started winning back the territory, Stringer dimed on him. If not for the raid Marlo and all of them would've been completely wiped out.
But stringer was stupid because by him snitching on Avon like that he thought everything would go back to normal but what he didn't know was McNulty had him on a wiretap so if he not been killed by Omar and brother mouzone he would have ended up in prison with Avon and I wonder if Avon would have had him killed
It doesn't matter. There is always a reason you lose a war but all that matter is you lost the war. Stringer played it smart, and would have ultimately become the dominant power in all of Baltimore because he was the smartest business man. Avon, like he said, was just a gangster. Maybe he would succeeded in taking out the Stanfield organization or maybe he would have died in the process, no way to tell, but even if he won, the Co-Op had a better product and Avon had weak muscle.
@@ericksantos4555 no stringer was not smart at all just like Joe stringer tried to make something worked that wasn't there Marlo would have played stringer just like he played Joe now if Joe had not bought Marlo into the co op that's one thing but stringer didn't want to get his hands dirty he a business man now Avon was smart he killed 2 birds with one stone he put Marlo on top he knew Marlo would kill Joe and he also knew Marlo wasn't gonna last long
you know what man? i just finished the wire. and i struggled trying to find a channel that talks about the wire and this one is it. i dig the setting, i dig the content, i dig the production altogether. this shit is the channel for me fasho
Avon was in good position to regain his empire once he got out of jail, the way things ended in Season 5. Marlo was out of the game, with his lieutenants either dead or locked up. Prop Joe was gone. And Slim Charles (a former lieutenant of Avon's) was set to be a major player. Beyond that, Avon was respected on the west side in a way that Marlo wasn't. Avon was both loved and feared, whereas Marlo was only feared. And that fear was gone after he was forced to give up the crown.
How long was Avon supposed to be in prison for his second sentence? I think Marlo was definitely going to prison at some point as well. He showed a real lack of discipline by going after those corner boys in the last episode.
@@jacksonjacob7791 i feel like that scene was foreshadowing his fate. He either got locked up cuz he couldn't stay away, or killed cuz he couldn't stay away.
Just found your channel bro. You’re a great story teller and your editing is dope. Keep doing your thing just like this. Do some on the sopranos and some of these white shows and I swear your channel will double up all the time.
In my opinion I believe Avon won the war. If you remember Slim Charles along with few other Barksdale crew was about to roll up on Marlo & his crew b4 the police stormed in on Avon and arrested him. If he had given them the go-ahead, they wouldn’t sent Marlo & his crew to the cemetery where they belong.
True. I thought about that…but still, there was no guarantee marlo would die just because they had the drop. Slim Charles was reliable, but everyone else on Avon team was suspect. Slim would have had his hands tied with chris. But if Avon would have gotten there with all that muscle that was in the warehouse marlo chris & Vincent was All going to die for sure.
Michael really won because hes the only one who got what he wanted plus the police didn't even mention him not once in the end his brother was safe and he was out the game and he had the best aim

Yep n he made Marlo sit in the #2 booth too.

I love the way you broke this down, great insight
He said that to Vincent BARKSDALE WEAK TODAY
🎯. You right brother👏🏿👏🏿, because Marlo went back to the streets and had a confrontation with those guys on the corner all because he wanted ppl to fear him. Great content brother.

Facts!
Yoooo this sound real accurate
Fact
Marlo was weak and short comeing to Avon skills..he sat across from Avon hiita which was slim Charles..he could have been taken out the game...
Man this was perfectly said.
In the end.
He was the smartest natural business man
@@lordoffaiyum9727
I don't know about that. Street business sure, but Stringer wanted to take it to the next level, go legit by investing in property and make way more money with none of the stress. Avon couldn't live that way.

Avon was Gangster and a Gentleman. Marlo was more like a rabid wolf, trying to kill and eat everything in his path.
This ALONE...makes Avon better in all ways in that treacherous game...to ME, anyway.
He was the man back in the day! His still a man , he’s a man today!!! Powerful cutty has my respect
There’s always a Marlo and there’s always a new and disloyal new generation it’s the same story as The Godfather for gods sake lol

But they knew the name of Omar, and im pretty sure they know Avon as well
So, I think that Marlo won the Short term War, Avon won the Long term War
Perfect analysis bro💯 everything on point
You right!!
When Wee-Bay was out Avon was on his muscle shit, but them young idiots he had working for him didn't stand a chance against Christ and Snoop!
Marlo and Avon was the same Avon was far from old school
Avon didn’t have any real muscle bay and bird were in jail and Omar killed his other man.
Boom
How so he took everything from Avon?
He still got away with freedom and washed money
Who did Chris plug in with at the end
@Bunde sliga Avon crew stayed in charge
This my fav use of the king stay the king line.
Your understanding of human nature and ability to simplify the complex is amazing. Would love if you expanded to other shows like Power
Lol.
A lineup of those boys plus Cutty, Savino, Little Man, Bodie, and Brother Mouzone and all of his men would be unstoppable.

@@DsgSleazy That’s kinda the point tho right? We wouldn’t have seen Marlo rise to power if he had to face all of Avon’s muscle. @@alexjames4770 that's his wife though lol. He couldn't threaten anyone in the game while inside vulnerable.
Let's not forget Omar being how he is sooner or later would have robbed Marlo and forced Omar to come after him in retaliation eventually.

Thanks bro I appreciate that👌🏽💯
I got Avon winning because at the end Marlo had to go through Avon (who was running things inside) to get the connect when Avon was in jail. Avon also protected Chris I'm sure because Chris ended up in jail as well. Avon won because it's more than killing on the streets.
Actually Avon won because he dropped more bodies
The Wire is real cause Chris did shoot Avon but in the pen whatever city you from that is who you are who you roll with check out American Me all is forgiven and forgotten in prison
I came across these videos today and I am hooked!! Now I'm going to rewatch the show again.
The show illustrated that avon would have definitely won if the police didn't get to him first.
It is clear cut; Marlo won the war hands down but suffered great losses.
He was garenteed gonna take them out if it weren’t for the fed s
FACT
Marlo won the battle not the war. You’re highly tripping my guy.
Omar himself singlehandedly dismantles marlos crew, the boys were ruthless but that’s really it
Like Dangelo said “the king stay king” in the end Marlo still had to come to THE KING to try to wear the CROWN which was solidifying him with that connect which you need to be king
Avon’s crew did get weak once he left, that’s because bitch stringer was in charge running things.
Maybe but like in real life the police is always part of the game you have to win that game too
That why stringer is dead 😂

My guy, your content is so well thought out and produced. You make great points, and have thoughtful insights on the characters and story of the wire. I appreciate you beyond words for these various analyses of the greatest show ever aired
Slim Charles had the drop on Marlo and all his muscle. Stringer snitching is what brought down Avon.
Yup your boy/partner snitching is unavoidable
what caused that to happen though.....the pressure from Marlo and how to deal with him
@@androlibre9661 No, Stringer was just soft. Can't forgive treason or make excuses for it

Good video bro you got me ready to watch “The Wire” all over again.
I swear the wire is the greatest show ever
Facts lol
No doubt I watch that series 3 times over the years
I can't believe whole time Barack Obama was somewhere watching the series too..
If you love the wire then you'd also enjoy the show gommorah , specifically seasons 1&2 which is about a turf war between 2 mafia clans , one clan is basically the youngins trying to overthrow the old heads, it's based a true events known as the scampia feud war
It shows, in real time, the disintegration/decay of the basic tenets of the empire called the United States of America. No punches pulled, sensibilities be damned... and while Baltimore is the perfect example/biopsy to show just how bad it all is, it could have easily been set in Pittsburgh, Detroit, St. Louis, Houston, Oakland...or a hundred other cities because, beneath the regional differences, we're ALL dealing with the same shit.
The WIRE steps back and looks at the big picture...all the pieces matter.
Your news anchor style commentary is impeccable, keep up the good work 💯💯

Marlo won by technicality due to Avon going back to jail he lost in my eyes because slim Charles and Avon and his gang if 20 niggas had the drop in him at the rim shop but the police raided right before
Avon won this. You have to count what's spoken about not just what's shown. When you do that, you got the "dropping bodies " line, AND you have Stringer Bell saying he was ahead and had knocked Marlo down a notch....OR TWO. That's winning.
First video i watched and dead about to sit in a dark room and practice talking like this… presentation, facts, cadence, this shit is god level

I have got to ask you this question because your channel you created is nothing but hands down professional. The question is : Do you have help with putting everything together when dropping a episode or do you solely put everything together yourself. Your channel comes off super clean and polished , pretty much flawless/ damn near perfect. From your set to dialog and on to the clips you choose for each episodes topic. With all that being said - if you don't have a small team behind you helping produce your content....... which would mean the show is created by one committed , extremely creative with uncanny insightful - bad mutha F'er. This channel is insanely good and for anyone who is serious about starting their own RUclips channel then look no further and I highly suggest to take note...bout to watch a few more episodes.... Cheers
Also even though Barksdale was in jail Marlo had to go through him to get to the connect.
Keep dat shit coming… love the breakdown/study and overall aesthetic of your channel fam

Marlo won in the end cause he beat his case and had 10 million dollars to retire on that’s a win win to me in the streets and in business they were in …
But he got out and ran back to the streets. probably died with no muscle
The powers that be would never let him live long enough to enjoy that much money.
I say Avon because he’s the gatekeeper on the Greeks and the king stays the king.

Your channel is one my tops for Wire breakdowns 💪🏾
Im 30 years old and i just found this show after watching "the corner"
The writing and acting in these shows is amazing
I've always been really curious to see what would develop between Slim Charles and Marlo after he already sold them the connection. My money is on Slim taking Marlo out as soon as he heard he was back in the game, pre-emptive strike, Slim was one of the few that would see it coming and nip it in the bud
Slim Charles was always cautious of Marlo. He was tried to warn both Stringer and Prop Joe about trying to work with Marlo but they were both too stubborn to listen. He probably would've done Marlo like he did Cheese, catch him slippin for just a moment and that'd be the end of it.
Slim Charles was well respected but not willing to step up when given the shot and had a way of failing, he was Avon’s warlord and failed hard against his opposition.
@@kevinyoung947It wasn't that he failed, it's just he was literally the only competent soldier, surrounded by idiots by the end
@@kevinyoung947 Slim was not weak or stupid. Stringer put some clowns around him and Avon underestimated Marlo in the beginning. Stringer was the one that was not built to lead...
@@jays1ay574 If the show went another season and Slim was in a position of power, he would of ended Marlo just because he's too unpredictable and done too much.
Hear ya...but Slim Charles was the pawn who became "queen" on Team Avon...then king. Marlo lost his "queen", rooks, bishops...
In off screen incident Avon and Stringer had victories. The police stated how the Barksdale organization spread out across the city this means they were getting more money and that's how they get more muscle.
Aye bro I gotta admit, this was a really good video. Now I can’t want to finish watching season 2 and get to season 3!
Avon won. His people was ready to take out marlo if it wasn't for stringer snitching. Also avon ran the prison and if marlo would have went to jail he would have to bend over for avon. Also avon still had power in the street while in prison. Marlo had to go through avon to get to the Greeks.
Avon definitely won the war. He had too much connection every where
Seriously,You are saying what I was thinking while watching.Good Video bro!
Prop Joe said that Marlo was willing to back down if he kept his corners. Also, Slim had Marlo and Slim at that rim shop with little protection if Avon didn't get caught Marlo would have been bagged up

I like the breakdowns that you do. How you dwell deep into science of the character or for better terms the psyche of the character. Keep up the good work.
Can we just highlight the actions of 1 of Marlo's top shooters. This dude (w/ afro) was shooting on his opps, while using the car as cover, AND still scored a cleaned headshot. 3:10
Makes you think differently when Marlo says, "speaks to the quality of Barksdale's people."
Everybody respected the name Barksdale, no one knew or cared about Marlo
I never watched the show but I've watched dozens of videos like this analyzing it. You do a great job. Much praise for your thoughts.
Marlo ain’t win nothing. He was a pretender. He was the “king” for an hour before he fell. He had zero morals or code. He was destined to fall.
Morals ? They were selling crack
@@kingDrAgOnZoRdS When Cutty wanted out and Avon had no problem with it.Then giving Cutty money to fix up his boxing gym, you don't consider that having morals??
Just found this channel. You’ve got a silky smooth voice man I appreciate the content.
Sound like something out of season 6 bro lol
If that were the case the co op wouldn't need a connect cause slim would already have due too working for Barksdale
Avon sister didn’t have that type of money anymore that’s why he sold the connect for 100 large
Avon wouldn't need to go through all that trouble for the connect, meanwhile the 100k was just a way to tax marlo.
that itachi poster in the back is wicked good video man
Avon was like santino off the godfather.
Bad comparison Avon wasn’t a hot head like santino his crew got weak while he was locked up because of stringers lack of leadership
Marlo won the race, Avon won the marathon, he couldn't even get the Greeks without paying Avon and he lost it all in the end The King Stay The King, Marlo wasn't on the throne long enough to take a shit
And Prop Joe was the puppeteer of most of Avon's L's using Stringer's clouded perspective. The Baltimore Littlefinger
That's why Avon's true rival, was always Prop Joe. Which again illustrates, that Marlo was a placeholder twice. One for being a placeholder for Avon and two as his rival.

Avon is out of prison by now running the streets
AVON LOST THE GAME BUT WON THE WAR WHEN SLIM CHARLES MADE IT ACROSS THE BOARD TO BECOME A KING OR A POWER PLAYER. AVON STAYED ON TOP. MARLO BECAME UNKNOWN WITH NO CREW. REMEMBER, WITHOUT AVON THE CONNECT WOULDN'T EVEN SPEAK TO MARLO. EVEN HIS SEAT IN THE JAIL VISIT TO TALK TO AVON WAS #2
The government also put him on a docket so Marlo could also have been charged again at any time once if he got into any trouble.
I like this channel man, you have a good vibe and voice for it. Keep pushing. It takes time but you make good content.
@@myasmith7922 Yep! Stringer had no way out if he gets put in prison, but could he have flipped the tip to Culver to keep himself out of jail?
String had to many 40 degree days!
