This is the extended clip (extendo, get it?) of The Downfall Of Mayor Royce, featuring an extra 10 minutes of content. We’re getting cinematic in this B.
🎥 DIRECTOR’S NOTES 🎬
🎬 This Scene Remix is my longest to-date, overtaking the full version of The Tragedy Of Old Face Andre. The scenes used here are from Season 4 episodes 2-5, with a significant part of the new content focusing on Carcetti and Royce debating.
🎬 This is the first Scene Remix where I use a disclaimer to open the video, as well as my own personal intro sang by Lady Gaga. I don’t necessarily want to keep using those disclaimer screens going forward but I’m testing out how they're received by the viewers and RUclips’s Monetization team.
🎬 Included here but not in the regular version of The Downfall Of Mayor Royce is the full scene of Burrell and Foerster talking about removing detectives from the case, as in the regular version I had to start the scene halfway through because I felt that Burrell swearing within the first 7 seconds of the video would negatively affect engagement.

ITS IN HIS NOTES
Again, as if I needed another reason to love The Wire. This city level political stuff is as gangster as the rest of the game.
Buy a vote for a dollar sell it for two. Later for all that bullshit
W Watkins !! W Watkins!!
Actor who played Carcetti underrated like a mf
How's he underrated?
You must be the only person unaware of his body of work from "Queer As Folk" onwards.
I didnt know little finger was in the wire
He’s worse than the street dealers because African American men like him rather watch the destruction of its people and the city knowing damn well he grew up in these neighborhoods that’s sad as hell great work on your video he’s about money and power not lowering the crime talking about funds 😂 you have a structured system to make things happen what a fool
The wire portrays the reality of real life so perfectly how politics affect the police department and how that affects the street life and everything just so perfectly balanced out. And how each season shows you a a different aspect of life season 1 street life season 2 The major dealers and the port 3 the fall of the old players and the chaos of a the new rising ones 4 how the newspapers and schools are ran and play a part in everything and season 5 how the cycle continues and it will never stop. And how shit rolls from the very top all the way down to the down to the bottom of the hill.
Valchek accomplished his goal in the end, and a LOT of that was everything he did in this vide paying off in the end. All through bullshitting
Politics sickens me.
This depicts exactly where police corruption lies; from the top down. When you add in the political aspect; we can see why things never change.
People at the top of organizations rarely if ever like to rock the boat. They rely on stability to keep themselves where they are. And if they are subordinate on the way up, to whatever the power structure is, they stay subordinate to it when they’re there.
Keep in mind, another big issue is that, in America at least, the grand majority of the country simply doesn't care. It's not a left, or right, or even center. It's a nation of "Leave me alone, I want to watch tv!"
The apathetic masses that don't care about anything until it affects them, and then they want something done RIGHT NOW.
And then they want to be left alone again. Trying to "Force" Them to pay attention to their own country makes them scream bloody murder.
@@MaxxCoyoteit is a left and right issue though because the left wants people to be involved in the political process and the right wants people excluded, sometimes literally.
@@KD--sj8eo And, as I said, the Apathetic American masses want to be "left alone" and will ignore everything until it affects them.
@@KD--sj8eothe left do NOT want people involved in the political process for no other reason than to vote for them. Look at all the targets for "action". Young folk, non whites, immigrants and lower income metro areas. All areas that tend to lean left.
As for the rights opposition to it, they tend to follow very right leaning ideologies. Fairness and rules. Rules being, should newly immigrated people vote? Hawaii is very liberal and they dislike it when new residents from the mainland come in and vote. So its not a JUST right leaning issue.
Voter ID. Framed as racist. Except when buying alcohol, presenting insurance at the hospital. Oh, and liberal cities were happy to enact covid vaccine cards that needed to be shown WITH photo ID. So that racist narrative falls apart.
A hypocrisy of the right would be the funding of law enforcement and military. 2 very very important aspects of a society that should be a community funded thing. Yet healthcare isn't. And despite the potential savings that could be had with a singular federal insurance system with supplemental private insurance. Vs state by state messes of countless coverages and paperwork.
Royce wanted it to be one way, but it’s the other way
Easily one of my favorite lines from the show and one you can use in every day life

The intrigue of politics was so well presented in this show. The Wire might be a dramatization, but we all know that this is exactly what's going on behind closed doors. Great video!
Thank you very much
I guess none of them want a ... real job!
It’s barely a dramatization, one of the lead writers worked in the Baltimore PD for decades and based most of the characters on real people. Ed Norris, the guy they based Rawls on, is even in this video at 0:42

The poker scene took me a while to figure out that the guests were letting the mayor win in hopes of getting contracts with the city.
Royce used the games to hide the money and skirt around regulations on political contributions.
To add on to what you said, it's essentially bribery without being direct. They "bet big" and lose intentionally to the mayor. Its a great little detail.
It’s how they bypass campaign finance laws. They’re already donating to Royce’s campaign, but there’s an upper threshold on contributions for each fiscal quarter.

13:50 That feeding to Tony Gray is what in the greater scheme of things gets Carcetti elected. It's splitting the black vote to the max and isolates Carcetti as a pillar of hope and reform while the old dogs are fighting. Those strategies around possible outcomes is just why this series is so marvellous and I doubt something like it will be made in the foreseeable future. On every level of society there is the same anticipation game but different levels of awareness. I mean, you can argue most series are easier to watch but the Wire is pretty much a non-fiction study, but fictionalized.
The wire is a sociological document and has very little fiction in the real sense of the word. Realism. It just comments on things happening in the city.
I always say it’s like a dissertation in television form.

I love the irony of trying to tank the Braddock investigation by unknowingly giving the case to a far better cop. 😄
You could always count on the police brass or politicians to accomplish the complete opposite of whatever they intended. This whole show started with a bunch of "humps" being assembled to spin their wheels trying to investigate the Barksdale organization quickly and quietly to pacify Judge Phelan, and most of the "humps" turned out to be the best cops in Baltimore who did the exact opposite of what the brass wanted.

The way that lady says ''Though not in white neighbourhoods!'' at 10:48 makes this show #2 after The Sopranos
When Carcetti brought up the witness being murdered all Royce had to do is respond with asking him did his sources also provide him with a suspect, motive, cause of death, where he was murdered etc.
He also could’ve played Carcetti by assigning Gregg’s, but not really. So when they leaked that, he could’ve just said she was assigned to assist in the investigation.
Royce isn’t interested in logic or being a good mayor, just getting to his next drink or secretarial “service”.
That would be super risky as Royce didn't know what the fuck Carcetti was talking about at all. For all he knows there may have indeed been witnesses, a suspect, and other evidence.Guessing could heavily backfire. So the safest move would be to try and redirect to familiar ground.
What I love about this show is that every time the bosses think they are stalling something by putting a “nobody” officer on it that officer turns out to be way better than the people originally working the case haha. They were just overlooked by incompetent bureaucrats
That’s most aspects of life
Amazing and brilliant. You can’t take cash directly from bundlers so you organize a card game and magically you win every time and take the proceeds 😀. Politics at its finest and as corrupt as it gets.
Remember when mayor Royce tried to do the right thing by justifying the Hamsterdam project standing up for the results? Some might think he was just trying to coin political points with it, but Royce went so far with it he even ignored his political advisors and listened the researcher and the science. He tried and he was shut down by the powers behind him and every other political figure: Donators and nameless advisors whispering in their ears. Sadly, the worst of the worst won that battle.
I believe Royce redeemed himself in that moment but eventually saw how impossible it was to win and secured himself instead which any rational person would do in that situation. Martyrdom is not a virtue.
This week in Baltimore a man who was convicted of first degree rape was let out after 5 years and murdered 3 people including raping and beating a woman to death with a brick. He also burned his other victims. Baltimore is in complete despair.
