Proposition Joe had it all minus one factor. He was more intellectual than Stringer and had him making moves on Avon that benefitted him. Yet he understood Avon was about the Soldier life and could trust him to be monotonous in his decisions. When it came to Omar, he realized Omar was more tactically sound than Avon, intelligent like Stringer, but also had a code that made him Trustworthy. All of his machinations were effective but he never considered Marlo's Ruthless Ambition. He thought putting Marlon "on game" and showing him he was trustworthy was enough. He thought he was training a partner, but Marlo was learning for Prop Joe's position. Marlo wasn't looking to learn the laws of the land, he wanted to be King of it.
Another weakness I might add was Cheese. Cheese might have gotten his in the end but that man was always a liability, family or not. But it's not like he could just pop a cap in his ass & not hear about it around Thanksgiving time. He was a burdensome nephew. One of the takeaways I got from The Wire is that nobody ever really wins the game. The point is more or less to stay in for as long as possible. Prop Joe managed to stay in it for a long time.

That scene where Omar asks if his clock is repaired...and he PRODUCED THE REPAIR TICKET...and PAYS TWENTY DOLLARS after just closing a $400K drug deal. You talk about old school...like back to the cave men... And Robert Chew's reaction when Omar asks for the clock...that deserved an Emmy all alone. RIP to both indeed.
Pedantic I know, but blaming inanimate objects on people’s decisions is fruitless. From the cartels to the dealers, to Michael K. Williams, to myself even (I used to IV pure dark-web-sourced fentanyl for years before it was a blip on anyones radar; it was my drug of choice), we all make decisions. The cartels and the dealers made the decision to distribute the drugs. Michael K Williams and I made the decision to use them (not that I’m “putting myself in with MKW” as Lester would say). MKW either wasn’t careful enough, or his demons were such that like many, he didn’t care enough. Addiction is no joke, I can’t say I don’t empathize. Addiction is no joke. And fentanyl is so powerful, that if you don’t take every precaution, you are simply screwed. But regarding fentanyl.. Fentanyl made no decisions. Fentanyl is just an organic compound which has existed (with legitimate uses) for many decades. The main problem is the problem the wire makes clear. *The war on drugs is a fucking failure. And it will only get worse.* There exists worse than fentanyl. And trust me, it will emerge eventually.

Rewatching the series multiple times makes me pick up on little bits of dialogue and mannerisms that I missed the first time around.
