      I think the idea is… ok but yeah it’s boring. I think it’s meant to be a way to speed up one’s progression for new playthroughs (because some of the new playthrough grind is a bit of a slog) but it just fizzles cause those parts are not long and are later on in a playthrough *cough* sawtooth *cough*

      I think it's okay but I feel like it could have been better I wish they made a free DLC for all the borderlands games including tiny Tina's assault on dragon keep stand-alone game and wonderland where it adds a new character that stands next to the golden chest and he can sell you golden keys for eridium (money if you're playing on borderlands 1) the more you buy from him the more expensive it gets but if you wait a while it'll die down or just save and quit, the character could be a mysterious character like the merchant from resident evil 4 or xul from destiny!

    absolutely, the fact they're rarely released, alongside the fact that the loot you get is meh at best which in BL2 is often overshadowed by other weapons or just becomes useless after 3 levels. Theyre meant to be special but the loot just makes it not feel special at all, a single warrior kill gives better loot then 5 golden keys half the time just makes them feel so useless even for the most casual players.

      If golden Key loot did something interesting, I might make it available in the pregame. So instead of your default loot you get a random item to tweak the early game, then you slot into the random number generator for the rest of the game.
      And if you are having terrible loot drops, you can go back to the start to grab something random and new.
      Ideally it should generate one item of each type, and you must choose just one item each round so you want a shotgun challenge? Go grab a new shotgun.

    To me G Keys have 2 issues, the loot is bad, and they’re boring to obtain. An idea to fix them could be something like
    Make them good and let us know the odds, e.g. 10% chance to get a legendary, 1% chance to get a pearl #bringbackpearls
    2nd, make acquisition fun, how many side missions go unplayed bc they don’t give anything? A LOT! Have it so they can get keys from missions AND they could throw shift codes our way. I could also go into a rant about how removing mission reward uniques could help a future game but I’ll save that for a different paragraph. 😂

  • @elliotallison2570
    @elliotallison2570 2 месяца назад +53

    For me the main problem with golden keys is that they’re limited by time and they’re profile based not character based. If golden keys were like eridium and sometimes dropped from enemies it would be completely fine and I would use them. The problem is that they are a limited resource that you have across all of your characters so even though I have a couple hundred in bl2 I’ll never end up using them since once they’re gone they’re GONE. If you use eridium to get the wrong sdu upgrade in bl2 early game it’s fine since there will always be more eridium. If you use a golden key and get something useless for your character then it’s just a waste of a golden key. It would be like saying that you have a limited amount of bunker kills ie 100 and you have to wait for gearbox to release a code to get more opportunities to farm him.

      @@elliotallison2570as joltz said, there are issues with this system. But I think being able to keep the keys to use on other characters is very useful. If the play through isn't going well, you can just grab 1 or 2 things. For example, it has been a great source of on-level snipers in my sniper only run until I get some good farms unlocked. I don't see how it's much different from farming tinder snowflake. I personally have no problem with it and I don't abuse the golden chest glitch, but if people don't like it then just ignore it or give the loot to your friends.

    I find them useful and they work for all games in my experience. I redeem them on the website and use the same code for all games and it works. I leveled from 50-70 on TPS by doing first mission on UVHM and resetting and every few levels I would switch to TVHM where I was in Concordia and grab some gear via Golden Keys and sell gear I didn’t want. I did almost the same thing on Bl2, stayed doing Pyro Pete’s bar brawl from 50-80 on UVHM, only leaving to go to The Forest to get a Bee shield my level every few levels (also for Grog Nozzle once) and use golden keys to get new gear as well as Torgue Tokens to get a new Harold every few levels directly from the bar vending machine itself without having to leave. Also used a bunch in BL1 when leveling up there, you get a lot of the same guns you get from Crawmerax minus the pearls. And on BL2 you can get E-Tech weapons that are way better than a generic purple weapons that scale better in UVHM. They also are useful for grinder material in TPS. This is not only a non-issue for me but was very helpful if you save up a bunch of them before starting a play-through.

    The Chaos Chamber actually would be a really good way to give rewards, I think. Forcing people to make a build that actually does damage or can survive a long time so they can earn their loot instead of literally sitting and waiting for another real person to decide to tweet something. Especially since, like the diamond key chamber, you have more control over what you get. While the gold key is entirely random, the others let you pick from a kind of selection, with the Chaos chamber even letting you completely control what kind of gear it is.

    I think many people would argue, myself included, that handing out loot "for free" mostly takes away from the game. As it is right now, this system basically serves as a skip for the shooter part of a "looter shooter", besides, the loot from the box ends up being mediocre 99% of the time anyway. In the end it's both unfun and not worth your time.

  • @SplatastictheRealOne
    @SplatastictheRealOne 2 месяца назад +1

    My own opinion about the golden keys, it's good for like early game when you don't have much for a build but immediately falls off the minute you get closer to end game content, and can farm for legendaries(seraphs,pearls, etc.) to maximize your build ever since I haven't touched the golden chest in Sanctuary, or Pre-seq's town unless regarding Preseq's system it was to Dupe the purples and legendaries, for those moonshined legendaries, and free money which does make it powerful, but equally boring since it becomes a grind itself requiring a lot of patience, and character renaming for like spare time, or fresh characters to play as regarding that front.
    and this was *BEFORE* The Commander Lilith DLC mind you where it felt okay and made sense, but ever since they added the *BOOSTED* Characters(lvl 30) it made that chest even more obsolete, since you could just grab a boosted Sal(or anyone), go nuts and farm everything possible then put whichever items you don't need for sal(or who ever) into the transfer box near *triple "It's TIME!"* Claptrap and just start the process over and over making those key's just collect dust.
    But as I've seen with BL3's diamond key system, I think it's a great idea to reimplement towards the older games(or newer ones, as long as they redo how it works so it's not so RNG dependant to get the keys.) so that you can obtain key's via gameplay rather than needing to look for a code on someone's page(or video) to continue to make them more relavent to the character you're playing as.
    But then that is also making me think if there were to be an event tied to the loot box, (using Roguelands or something else like a boss rush as an example would be a good thing to add so that if you beat a run through, you keep what you collected, plus earn some unique legendaries upon completion even if you fail so that it gives incentive to push your knowledge and skill harder to get one of the more coveted weapons of borderlands maybe even ones from the past? 👀.) So that it's a Random chance to occur while your doing some stuff like playing the game get a key, and strike that chance and wind up going into the aforementioned boss rush/roguelike to earn more loot than what was on the wall and possibly adding an excuse for pearls and other quality items to obtain to make it more unique imo. (but also to opt in for it to be not so rng dependant if you're max level 72 regarding BL3 like the Mayhem mode)

    The golden key chest has a real big problem, at the start it's op, but you will level up past those levels so you either get easy loot now or wait till itll be worth it, but if you wait it's not worth it because by then you'll already be getting purple weapons or even legendaries so it ends up just being an early game power boost

    Considering most players want to keep their playthroughs limited to that playthrough (like disabling BAR in BL2, or not using secret stash/safe), The only way that I'd consider them a good feature is if they're able to be equally available in every playthrough separately. I propose that they drop from in-game sources (rare world drops or raid boss kills, etc.) as well as from codes, so it would fit every playstyle. They're not gone and exhausted forever, and challenge playthroughs can still use them if they're obtainable in that challenge.

  • @PROTOBLUES90
    @PROTOBLUES90 День назад

    Here's a thought. When you use a golden Key you are presented with a set of option by the "Chest". You have Trivia, Yolo (just spin your odds at random, and Test run. In Test run you will be given a random load out of swanky loot and if you manage to beat the challenge with the equipped gear you can choose some of that gear to keep.
    This would let players who just want to use the keys get on with their business, and people that take the challenge route a chance to use the gear before they lock in exactly what they want.

    at a fundamental level, i think you are addressing the issue thats inherent to golden keys: the lack of effort for the loot. I think your suggestion is good.
    However, I think that as a concept, getting something redeemable from outside the game to get something in the game is problematic at its core. its part of the reason why diamond keys were better, you didnt have to redeem any codes or create a twitter to get the free ones.
    A game I currently play, Forza Horizon, allows for the player to receive gifts from the devs through an in game mail system. BL3 had a mail system that could 100% have this incorporated and would remove the issue of having to leave the game or even go to the map hub / sanctuary and open a chest for the loot, rather you just get the item on the spot.

Have a spot just like the Golden Chest location where you go in, get a menu showing a bunch of unique guns that requires X amount of keys. More like a legendary shop than a gambling ring.

    The challenge idea was fun, you could even set them weekly/monthly and get to choose from maybe a vendor machine your reward, earning currency for that vendor depending on how well you did, even better if they let the vendor let you roll mission rewards from a loot pool that updates maybey slightly slower than challenges are put out so you could accumulate 2 rounds worth of tokens
    Basically the bl3 black market vendor with bootleg tourge tokens

    I like the idea of the 'key' as a ticket to be a participant on a minigame game show like with the squid games examples you had. They have come close with other game shows like killavolt, the thanksgiving and torgue bl2 dlc and moxies underdome. It would be a great way to try out some different themes or styles of stuff like the ultraviolet or western thing.

    I feel it would be fun for the golden key chest to open and be a board game. Kinda like what the Jumaji box opens to one. Then you could have a quick little board game that gives you split paths. Your reward will be determined by the path you take. Then next time you play it you can make different choices to see what the difference in loot is. That would be a fun way to spend some down time away from the shooting too.

    I think that the golden keys in the pre-sequel are the funniest thing to give out since you can just get infinite keys in your shift inbox (the thing directly across from the elevator to the meriffs office). Every time you relaunch the game you get a free skullmasher (on level) and like 20 keys. So giving out 5 keys for the game that gives you a infinite supply of them feels a lil silly to me.

    One system I thought of is instead of Golden Keys being tied to social media, they are instead tied to a leveling system of sorts where as you kill named enemies or bosses, your bar increases and once it fills completely you get a golden key. You can either cash it in, or hold on to it and get 3 of them to get the diamond key. This rewards players who grind and it kinda acts like a Gacha Game's "Pity" system so if you're really unlucky while you're trying to grind for your weapon of choice, you can cash in your keys and save yourself the trouble. Randy could then use the current system to offer boosters to increase the rate the bar fills up for a temporary amount of time.

    That sounds like a lot of fun. You could get keys by a rare drop from bosses. Have different types of keys, such as shield keys, relics (or whatever they call it in bl4), shotgun key, etc and each boss will only drop that type of key. Like, if you were farming Captain Flint, he has a tiny chance to drop a Pistol key which can drop any type of pistol which can be unique to the chest or legendries/pearls.

    I do like the challenge idea, my biggest issue with Keys now is they aren't great for those not chronically online, or having to sift through all the crap in your feed to find. They already have the news ticker on the main menu in 3, how about getting an intern to make shorts/ tik toks, they make a new one, click it in game to watch it and you get sent the key. Everybody wins. They get to monetize their presence and we get loot for watching.

    I would love if they reworked it to give any unique gear especially mission rewards so they have more of an end game application, no one really liked backing up saves or closing their game entirely and going through 3 loading screens in the console experience of farming Sandhawks & Pimpernels.
    I Also wouldn't mind a like XP bar like what BL3 had for the Vault Cards but every time you fill that up you gain a free key (so you can completely just ignore the wait for codes and work towards them yourself) and with that key you get a free heap of legendary items or mission rewards. Would be hard to balance this early game but I think it would be a good side thing to focus on between missions plus you could add some challenges like you suggested but instead it grants (level scaling) XP towards that next key and XP towards a level to ease up on the lets be honest mostly mundane end game Borderlands experience of grinding 30 levels in a row to hit that level cap.
    I think maybe they could also take a Destiny route and make some rare variant keys tied to takedowns/raid bosses and at the end of the takedown/raid boss fight there's a chest that only unlocks with that unique raid key and in that chest there could either be pearls or raid specific gear (Like if it were the Guardian Takedown for example you would get a chance at the Stinger)
    Regardless, There's a lot they can do not just with Golden Keys but the idea of a Key in general and I hope they realize that in the next game in the same way they did with Diamond Keys. Because it is quite a redundant system for anyone that's not new and knows where to get gear better than a purple Hyperion pistol and a poorly rolled purple Bandit shotgun.

    I wouldn’t mind if you could load a golden key in a takedown/raid boss as long as it doesn’t affect difficulty (i.e. locking difficulty behind the keys) but instead kept whatever difficulty is set and just increased loot drops from bosses/mini bosses. That way you can get loot you want from golden keys, you still have to be good enough to earn it, and they feel useful and have a place in the game that doesn’t make a hole in content when your out of them.
    An example would be you load a golden key into Maliwan takedown and each boss drops 200%-500% more loot including dedicated drops.

    I kinda love your idea for golden keys, maybe Randy should be taking notes because these are golden ideas! I'm just imagining a selection of things we could tackle, so we don't have to do this one or that one, but any challenge, and if we complete it, a guaranteed legendary, if we do very good, another or maybe 2 more, and if we can't complete for the life of us, some random purples and blues... That sounds legit.

    I think i might have a cool Solution:
    Firstly get rid of the Codes but make the Golden Keys farmable like Seraph Crystals from the Raid Bosses, maybe 1-2 per Raid Boss Kill.
    Now, the Golden Keys can still be used for the Chest BUT what if they introduce a True Raid Difficulty where you have to pay 10 Golden Keys instead of Eridium and you could get guaranteed Pearl or Effervescent if they bring it back in BL4.
    Or you can use 20 or 50 for a Diamond Key.

  • @gearsfan6669
    @gearsfan6669 2 месяца назад

    to take your challenges idea a little further while still keeping what makes Diamond Keys better than Golden Keys (the fact it's a guaranteed legendary drop) have 3 tiers of missions with 2 mission types each, mobbing and bossing, easy guarantees 1 legendary from mobbing or the dedicated drop of a World Boss (any named enemy that doesn't have a true boss health bar), medium guarantees 2 from mobbing or the dedicated drop and 1 random legendary from an actual normal boss, and hard is 3 legendaries from mobbing or 3 dedicated drops from a Raid Boss, it still leaves normal farming open as an option and your main form of farming but gives those that aren't quite at the point where farming for parts and prefix matters as much a fairly rare source of guaranteed legendaries in the form of fighting easier things. the way these missions would work is that while it is your active mission it could apply a modified Shlooter effect while within the mission bounds. It would also make the early loot charting much easier for those that make those lists since it's revealing the dedicated gear of that boss even if slowly

    Borderlands is a game about grinding for awesome loot. I don't want to just type in codes for the game to do the fun part for me! The only times I've used them is when I'm playing with friends who don't play the game as much as me (so their tolerance for less interesting sidemissions or xp farming is lower), pushing our way through the story and everyone's gear feels a little underleveled - usually around the time you have to face The Bunker, due to the huge level jump in the story missions at that point. Getting a sudden burst of blues and purples feels super empowering, but I don't think I'd bother doing it when I'm playing on my own, especially not a high/max lvl character.

    what i feel like they should do with the golden key system if they continue it, is go with the route of destiny 2's last wish token system, every raid encounter you complete you get a key, and then you can use those keys to open multiple chests at the end of the raid, i feel like that would be an amazing addition to borderlands 4's endgame, and a neato reference too cuz the last wish raid is absolutely fantastic

    I think the main issue lies within how they’re obtained, but I also agree that the process to get your loot could be infinitely more engaging. I mean, you have a looter shooter full of enemies and bosses, killed/farmed for the SOLE purpose of gaining loot, and you don’t even capitalize on that a LITTLE bit for this key system. Not to mention, whatever loot you receive from the chest, you just have to take it assuming you don’t utilize any exploit or read only feature (idek if that works for golden keys). Like thanks for the loot from this rare key. I really appreciate this Jakobs stock, Dahl grip, and Hyperion barrel on a Vladof sniper. I’ll just go farm Gettle instead.

    Somebody mentioned one mod that changed the golden keys to eridium, there's another, Snowbound, that replaces it with 5 crystals (i forgot the name but they're pink). I think the golden keys were good in 2012. Every big developer was doing something similar at the time, Golden Keys were really just the ones that held up (since they still do them). I've never been a fan of these code things in games as it just introduces an additional hurdle to unlocking good things, plus the FOMO from codes that expired.

    I'd like to see the Golden Keys as a physical item in the games, which can be dropped by any enemy with a rarity comparable to Pearls.
    Still keep the Shiftcode system, for those who want more, but add something that can give you excitement during the game. Maybe up the odds of golden keys on normal mode, where you are guaranteed to find at least 1 key during your run. With decreasing odds the harder the game gets.

    This has always been also problem for me. Like sure I don't need them, but it's great to sometimes be rewarded, especially more in the early game, where the purples are still usable.
    And I completely agree with you and that's also really similar to how I wanted to solve the issue.
    I basically wanted something like the weekly challenges in BL3 with Vault cards. Because you're not limited to just one type of content. If it was locked to a defeating certain boss you could get bored by it pretty quickly or at least I would be. But if the challenge was defeat 300 enemies with Dahl Assault rifle, you could still do basically whichever content you want. You would by just limited in the how you beat the content. Which sometimes can lead you in discovering a cool stuff. Like when I did my 1st Dahl only playthrough in Borderlands 2(I believe)I picked up and used The Hail for the 1st time and since then it's one of my favourite unique weapons in series.
    So if the challenges were about how you play instead of what, I believe it could help both the newer players in trying something different with their build. And they would also be rewarded for it.

    Would love to see tho golden keys get a boost like special ability weapons (red text) that is special to that pool (or ultra rare drops from other sources). Would be balanced like a purple or legendary, but have rare chance for a godly/funny weapon. BL3 did it well with the goofy weapon ideas and it would be cool to see other games get that fun. Honestly my favorite part of a game is the ability to goof around as much as intended gameplay, so I love the idea of mini games or fun challenges…granted it can be easier said then done to implement it well, but here’s to hoping

  • @RamenLlama

    I do like this idea, and I definitely agree the system could be more interesting. Though I feel like the appeal of the golden chest is that it provides instant on-level loot, and making the player go through a challenge/quiz could kinda negate that. Some gamers are very impatient and if the challenge isn't presented/implemented in an engaging, interesting way, then I can see the idea being met with resistance. Making it optional like you mentioned could be a good solution, so people who don't want to engage with the system won't have to.

    For the Boss Challenge idea you have, I really like it! I think I get what you're saying with difficulty scaling, it seems like you're trying to emulate something like Terraria's difficulty modes, where Expert Mode Bosses have new phases and mechanics along with scaled health with better drops, which seems like a perfect idea for Borderlands! The only hangup on my end would be "what would happen if I fail, or want to try again?" The purple compensation prize seems good to me, but I think something closer to TF2's MvM ticket mechanic might be better. If you fail, you get your ticket back but no rewards. And for the replayability of these hypothetical gamemodes, maybe offer a way to play them without keys, with less/no rewards so people can practice them, or play them at all in the likely situation that key distribution is all but forgotten about. Either way, great video!
