I just wanted to quickly type in here to say thanks for helping me reach 100 subscribers! I'm now able to fully change my channel url to Jovinus instead of my old name that I had when I was a teen haha. It really means alot to me! As you've probably noticed i'm pretty responsive here! If you have any further questions feel free to ask away! i'll most likely answer them or let you know that it'll be a future video :)
It always makes me happy to see a video about my main, it helps me realize that I’m not the only person on earth that plays Lucario. Thank you for the great video!
He's definitely one of the most underrepresented characters in the game haha, atleast it makes finding content for him pretty easy when you search in the right areas! Thanks for watching :)
I've watched a lot of Competitive Smash tutorials. You've displayed a deep understanding of the character; your excellent articulation is proof of that. Thank you, Lucario & I can now ascend to the next level!
Never knew Smash even had this much depth.... I see I will be playing cpu 6's for the rest of my life. If everybody in quick play understoods even half of this video then I'm just gonna get railed. Thanks man, keep up the good work.
Smash has a very surprising amount of depth! But don't let that dissuade you from playing against other players :) The beauty of this game is that there are so many players who are at different skills levels and are at different points in their journey to becoming better. There are still people who are picking up and learning this game from scratch even now despite the pandemic haha It's all a matter of mindset really, do your best and see where it takes you! and from there try and learn from mistakes and ask for advice. It's like any other sport haha, everybody's learning :P Regardless, I hope you enjoy your time with ultimate and I hope you find a character that really sticks with you :)
4 months later, didnt even realize I had been enjoying Lucario this long. He accidentally became my main after Richter when i started getting the hang of his insane recovery. I learned so much more about the game, off stage shenanigans, and the B mechanics (i knew B reverse but that was it) and had so much more fun doing it on Lucario. 10/10 guide still. Constantly going back and learning.
I've been struggling to fight this character so this is incredibly helpful. Lucario has always been a bit of an enigma to me so this clears up a lot of what I should look for and avoid of his general gameplan.
When it comes to fighting against him, the main key thing you want to focus on it not getting scared really! Make sure to put up alot of pressure or otherwise you'll be letting us have out way :P Otherwise always keep in mind of what we're trying to do when we're at high percent. We'll either way to grab you or read a jump, so be sure to mix it up alot!
Awesome guide! Nicely edited and explained. I use him as a side character since Brawl but still enjoy him nonetheless. I hope this vid gains some more traction due to the recent buffs! That's how I found it at least
I hope it will as well! I spent quite a bit of time on this for someome who doesn't really know how to edit haha. If there's a time it would be after he got buffed!
I can’t believe I didn’t know about the turn around special tech. I’ve been b-reversing like crazy all this time and didn’t know there was this sort of mirror option to that. This is gonna improve my movement so much. Thank you! Also down throw isn’t that bad, can be great for fair, fair, up air or something similar if opponent doesn’t DI correctly. (Edited for a spelling error)
It is possible to combo from it really early on, but any decent player should always be DI ing away when grabbed against him, it's better to get into the habit of using up throw if people are beginning to learn him :) but thank you! I hope it's been useful
Thanks for this. Been picking Lucario back up for wifi. can't play sheik online it hurts my brain. learned a lot of things. would love to see guides on other underused characters.
Subscribed. Probably one of the best smash character guides I've ever seen on par with Izaw's 'Art of' even. Edit: Just realized you say "otherwise" a lot, and I recommend getting a good mic, these will probably improve your video quality even more and dude let me tell you're a beast at editing and explaining. Amazing guide To put some enlightening on the otherwise stuff, many of the times you use otherwise after saying "or", you don't actually have to add otherwise after using or, I recommend using it as a way to make the script not look so similar in every sentence, so you should use it rarely. You also use "otherwise" when mentioning another attribute about a move, you can replace that with "You can also" or "X is also used as a y". When you start talking about a new part of Lucario's you use otherwise, which is kind of grammatically incorrect. When starting a new segment you shouldn't use "otherwise" as "otherwise" means other "than that", meaning it doesn't make sense to use it because it is a new segment, disconnected from the last one. Otherwise, incredible script, and amazing editing and explaining. Just like I said one of the best Smash guides on par with Izaw's 'Art of' series.
Thank you for the criticism! There's definitely alot more I can do and it'll really just come with time to be frank! I'd love to get a better mic but i'm not in a good place to setup a mic stand with a proper mic currently (more of a space issue rather than a monetary one) and as for me mentioning otherwise alot it's definitely valid. It may not seem like it but I actually struggle alot with the English language and I have a bunch of comfort words I fall back on when speaking aloud haha. I can't gurantee that it'll change in the future but it's something I can make more of a mental note on I wouldn't compared myself to Izaw though! That's too much praise :) but I hope to improve even more in the future
@@JovinusSSB I've heard much worse mics. Your mic wasn't bad to the point of me hating this video, I definetily loved it. So don't wkrry about yohr mic too much! You r English was actually really good and understandable. You're definetily fluent, I just thought you had some mistakes that you can fix to maybe improve your English a lot more! Script writing is probably an great way to improve your English, so keep doing what you're doing and hopefully we'll see some results! Also, you're definitely comparable to Izaw. Don't underestimate yourself!
@@Chris-oq6qt Here I just did the CSC and did a dash immediately afterwards :) I have shield set to B on my controller so in this case I would just press b quickly -> and then dash afterwards! If you're rolling instead it's because you're dashing too early. I hope this helps!
nobody: not a soul: jovi: 24:42 also amazing video! best guide i’ve found on lucario so far, i’m thinking about picking him up and you answered all my questions in one vid! well done
I'm glad to here it bud! I'm happy to know that this guide is still doing it's main purpose :P hahaha I have some other videos going into specifics on Lucario and I'm in the middle of making more so feel free to check those out too if it'll help!
I’ve been playing smash at my friends house for about two year I’ve dabbled in lucario hear an there I picked him up in smash ult and I was looking for tech to help me this was exactly what I needed
I hope this helps out! If I were you I would focus on getting comfortable with the movement and with the basic combos he has initially. Focus on all of the fancy tech later once you feel comfortable afterwards. Don't take too much on at the same time :P
The main inspriration for making me want to make this video in the first place! You really helped me out with the yoshi guide back in the sm4sh days haha For the first real thing i've ever edited i'm happy with how this turned out. I hope life's been good to you even with the state of the world that we're in right now
I came here to look for some tips cuz I want to make Lucario one of my secondaries. I'll be back when I finish the video Edit : thank u so much, this video will help me a lot
Hopefully it continues to be helpful! There's quite a bit to learn with him in order to be the most optimal, but he's always a fun time regardless since his movement is pretty slick. I hope he suits you in the end!
I’m going to my first tournament in a little over a month. I have played Lucario a while back but just picked him back up today. This video will definitely help me with my basic knowledge.
Awesome! I actually picked up Lucario a few months and was hoping for buffs (he’s kinda lacking). I was really hoping for a weight buff but increased Aura is pretty fire and bit quicker in moves. Thank you dude!!
Trust me, the fact that downsmash and jab are quicker are so huge for us! Not many players will recognise it but they will once you jab lock them into down smash ;)
@@julioarcaiko The aura changes themselves are quite nice! The multiplier itself isn't increased by that much (I think the max aura multiplier has increased from 1.6 to 1.67) but that does mean that we'll be dealing about an extra 3% per stock and more importantly, those situations where they almost died won't be the case any longer!
Im going to say this right now this is the best guide I've ever seen, let alone on cario. Im actually making a whole document talking about Lucario and I definitely think this deserves to be on the top recommended spot. Thank you for making this guide, I definitely think I will Solo Main Lucario
@@cactusdip4680 I am yes! But I'm not incredibly active there, plus I'm not active online in general for smash. I mostly competed offline around the UK before the big C haha
I'm glad it could help! There isn 't much out there for Lucario sadly but I hopefully this covers most of what you need along with the other lucario vids i've made haha
This is a very good guide!!!!! The only thing I disagree with is your tip on down throw at 18:57. Its only use is as a combo starter at low percents for forward air strings.
The main thing is that up throw just does down throw's job but much better. Give it a shot and you'll see for yourself :P i'm glad you liked the guide though!
@@JovinusSSB I’ll try it out for sure if it combos more consistently! I’ve just seen sooo many Lucario mains use d-throw so often that I haven’t thought of using up-throw.
Lucario was always a bit tricky for me in the early days: it was hard to adapt to his movement stats and moves. But this video helped me immensely in making my Lucario better than its been. Your explanations on basic Lucario fundamentals are Easy to understand, and the majority of what you taught me didn't take long to replicate in the lab and on a real match! A little note on recovering with lucario: He's not like most fighters where you just hold the direction you want to go; The trick is to upB, wait a moment, and before he launches himself you want to tab a direction. Then when you're flying in the desired direction, you can move him slightly with left and right if he's going Up/Down (Up and down if he's going Left/Right, ect.). Not all walls can be clung onto so keep that in mind. Most stages have sides that will 'clonk!' you on the head and bounce you upward; You are VERY vulnerable in this state. Use it as a mix up only.
I'm glad that the video was useful to you! I certainly tried to make it as easy to understand as possible :) espicially since most people forget he exists in ultimate haha As for what you've mentioned about his recovery, I did recently make another video covering it in a bit more detail if you want to check it out!
This is an amazing guide. Good job man👍 it has helped me to know what I need to practice to learn him and add him to my list of characters alongside marth and terry.
Sorry for the delay! new year stuff plus not feeling well. I'm glad it's useful though :) definitely expect more in the future whenever that will be haha
Pretty good bare-basics video. A few things though. "Attack-Canceled Back-Air" is misleading terminology. What instead connects D-tilt to B-air is an "Instant Reverse Areal" or IRA. The two techniques utilize significantly different methods and achieve different ends. I believe the original misconstruing of the two is a consequence of a much older video that described the techniques, and didn't make clear the distinctions between the two. Some of Lucario's kicking moves have tipper-style sweet-spots: U-tilt, Dash Attack, U-air. U-air in particular bears mentioning in order to maximize its KO potential with optimum spacing. Likewise, F-smash, B-air and Force Palm Flame have sweet-spots closer to the palm and sour-spots further away. Special moves were very light on details, but you seem to already be addressing this with the "niche notes" series. I've already made a small comment on the recent extremespeed video. The short blurb on tactics and strategy in the introduction, while broadly accurate, is incomplete. There's a ton to get into in regards to theory and matchup analysis. It's probably a topic better suited for a dedicated video of its own, or several. One of the points I personally like to bring up is how Lucario has answers many fighters lack in order to combat much of the gimmicky jank that other fighters use. I've been at this since the first days of ultimate's release (longer if previous games are counted): smashboards.com/threads/aura-gym-the-ultimate-players-guide-to-lucario-w-i-p.466160/ The written guide is a little out-of-date and has languished a bit, but I may take some time to update and flesh it out if there's interest.
Hiya and thanks for watching! Big response here so I'll answer as best as I can :) Both IRARs and attack cancelling can be used to combo down tilt into bair, though IRARs would generally be a better option as it allows for the use of full hopping. What I'm doing in the video is with attack cancelling specifically! I didn't really cover IRARs here as I personally find the inputs much more difficult haha. I'll likely go into more details on IRARs in the future though For the rest it is correct. I chose not to cover the minor things like sour/sweetspots on certain moves mostly to keep the video at a decent timeframe. I didn't want to have a guide that's longer than 30 minutes covering every little aspect of him haha. When it comes to introductions on new things be it a character or a new concept, less is more :) The intro is also just that, it would certainly be inappropriate to get into all of the nitty gritty for each matchup here haha! Thanks again for watching, I hope you continue to keep giving good knowledge on the character! There's not much out there and more knowledge is better for everyone :)
I'm glad you did! I did cover a bit more on how I usually go about practicing Aura sphere in the controls video I made after this, but it wasn't too in depth. Best way is to just experiement and see what works That being said, I could all of the possible situations with aura sphere in the future! It could be hours though haha
Thanks haha, i'm from a small country called Wales but I don't think I have a very strong Welsh accent... due to upbringing it's kind of it's own thing haha!
AMAZING VIDEO I think you can talk more about bonk, and how steerting upb works(its really important :/, many new players falter there) There are other techs you can talk about in a semi advanced guide.(though they aren’t as important as the ones above as the ones you mentioned already, again good job, you covered most of the important points) ASC into ASC into bair Or ASC into ASC into ASC into bair(same as above but starts to kill earlier) Though with dsmash idk if this is as useful, but worth mentioning I guess, does alot more dmg. You also missed dair1 into fpg, either oos or setup with dair cancelling on platforms, or after upair, or after fastfall fair. Lucario wallcling setups after upb(its super specific though, but if you angle it down the uturn up you may be able to pull it off. Oh and also by angling the UpB at the right angle you can get invulnerability. Maybe you can also talk about tactics like using the new forcepalm fire and small aura spheres to zone Also pivot cancel side b will help it gain 2 extra frames which may sometimes help it... actually hit. And also falling fair combos into bair as a kill confirm discord.com/channels/679906319033303071/679919191964385281/740601865213051061 Extreme speed crashing on centre stage or trumping Also fair into aura sphere at high aura
@@MagnificentCreature I didn't even notice this comment! There's definitely alot of things I didn't cover in this video, I chose not to cover most of what you've mention mostly because it's really specific! I didn't want to bloat the video with alot of very niche things with certain moves. I covered the very meat and bones of the character in 30 minutes which I felt was just right for someone wanting to pick Lucario up :) That being said, I could have definitely covered up B more. There's alot of nuance with this move that I didn't really mention! I probably spoke about up B the least out of all of the moves
@@JovinusSSB Yes. and I 100% agree with your decision. Nice video by the way! Just to add that if you will ever be interested in doing a niche/mid level guide, I willl be very supportive of it. Also here are just abit more stuff 1)Platform tricks and 0-deaths with it 2)Lucario 0 to death(on FD) 3)Baby aura sphere tricks, (how it combos into DA and Ftilt at some ranges) 4)wall jump, wall cling, doing both and maybe more in depth recovering probably still abit more I missed, but you can always ask the discord I guess? But even if you dont, this video does cover plenty. So well done! Really wished I had seen this sooner
@@MagnificentCreature I think i'll definitely go about making a second part that covers the niche things that weren't covered here! I'm looking to do a good number of lucario specific things like this in the future so you can expect more!
It wouldn't no :) The best way to think about it is that force palm only comes out if you press b while holding the stick in a direction. If you press b and then the direction you're instead telling the game "have lucario use neutral special, and then input a direction" Instead of pressing both b and a direction at the same time, you're doing it one after the other I hope this makes a bit more sense :)
Ty for this great video man! But one thing about downthrow... if my oponent constantly DIs in I am not able to get a fair after uthrow so I have the habit to just dthrow in those situations and backthrow into tchase has such a small window so I wouldnt say backthrow is the second best throw. Well thats my opinion...
If the opponent DI's in then it possible to fair them, though it will stop working at an earlier percent since it has more endlag than up throw. If you know that they're going to DI in then at certain percents down throw into up air is a kill confirm, it's like a really bad booyah haha! Unfortunelately most opponents will probably DI though
Hiya :) So this can be done by doing what's called a CSC (charge storage cancel). I cover it at 24:14 Basically it just cancels aura sphere without having to do shields, dodges or jumps. If you're quick you can buffer a move afterwards and it'll look like that. I hope this helps!
Sorry for the late reply! Christmas and all that haha The big advice I would give is to have jump on a bumper/trigger button and get used to using that really! Try going into training and doing asc into dair over and over using the bumpers as jump... once you get used to doing it in training then you'll be glad to know that the timing is the exact same for every other aerial!
12:09 how many times to you jump? I am a player that mains any "fast air speed" characters such as Jigglypuff, Yoshi, Villager. Lucario seems to be one of those characters... What I mean by fast air speed is characters like King Dedede. He's really slow, that's one example.
When I typically play in a serious match I am usually in the air as much as I can be myself! Rising fair and falling nair are your two main tools in neutral and they both end up either making you airborne or requiring you to be in the air for it to work haha As for air speeds, lucario is one of the fastest in the game And it's where he really excels! But it's important to stay grounded and use your tilts too, espicially since grab is what we want at low percents :)
I did yes haha.. I tried my hardest to keep the video at 30 minutes as I didn't want to bloat it with all the little minute details haha. This one should have been mentioned though!
I'm a Rosalina and luma main but I want to pick up lucario, my play style is extremely technical I'm scared I can't understand how to play free flow like lucario, should I pick him up?
As someone who plays both lucario and Rosa I can get and pinpoint the main differences here: - Rosa is more technical than lucario so learning the tech here won't be so bad. The worst thing for you will probably be wavebouncing - The combo game for both are them are fairly easy, but they are different - Rosa is more of a flowchart and lucario is more free flow as you've said. I think the biggest thing for you would be learning the free flow playstyle. I would give him a try and see if you like how he moves and how he plays first before worrying about learning him in depth :)
Theres one thing i dont think was covered in this video, isn't there a way to cancel aura sphere as you hit the floor? Could you maybe make a small video about that
Holy shit this video was super helpful. Do you or anyone else know if the command grab of force palm is active in the air? I have been playing Lucario for about a month but have not been able to grab them mid air if possible.
Heya! Unfortunately you can't Go grab people in midair with side b like you could with other command grabs. The best we can so is start it in the air and then land on the ground before the grab starts. I mentioned it during the side b section incase you missed it :)
This video pretty much covers all of the most important details at a fine level, hopefully you're able to learn something from it! I have some other random videos with more niche stuff which might be useful to you too :)
"He's better at playing around their opponents and being able to handle most aspects of competitive play" I was meaning to get around subbing this entire video but it's a big, big task to do haha. I hope you're able to make out the rest of it just fine :)
@@JovinusSSB the rest was perfect thank you. Ant advice for a person who has mastered everything but the most important tech...the reverse B aura sphere? Just seems like alot of work ...
@@JPeoplzOIII The main advice I would give is to just go into training and learning just the basic input of B reverse aura sphere (press b -> tilt stick in the opposite direction). From there just experiment with it and learn how it can be properly used or better yet, look at videos of top lucario's playing in tournaments! It'll be a bit of work initially, but overtime muscle memory will develop and it'll become as simple and easy as say shorthopping or fast falling with an aerial :) I would definitely recommend trying to learn b reversing atleast, it helps with lucario so much!
Does anyone know anything about rising short-hop fair into drag-down nair 1 into up tilt or another fair or up air. I’ve labbed it a bit and it seems like it has more potential to deal more damage than just the standard combos. Thoughts?
I'm not able to touch the game (Easter time and all!) But from memory I don't think that will work since the opponents are sent too high for the nair to properly drag down. That being said, you can definitely fair -> fair -> nair dragdown into more fairs if there's a platform below you!
It absolutely will :) I struggled with getting used to b for csc and y for specials for a while myself! Just keep at it and eventually it'll feel more natural!
I have questions about aurasphere on shield: Can the opponent role out safely after 11 hits like with rapid jabs? If the opponent tries to jump out will they get hit by the sphere? At high aura, can you always just hold aurasphere and combo after it shield pokes, instead of risking a cancel into force palm or grab which could be punished by a fast attack option from the opponent? Basically, I'm not entirely clear on the full flow chart of options after landing aurasphere on shield.
Hiya! I'll try and answer everything in bullet points below , some good questions though! - The opponent would be able to roll out after the first 11 hits yeah and with full invincibility from sphere - Due to how aura sphere works (it's a hitbox every 8 frames) they're very likely to escape the sphere charge if they jump during it - For the above two reasons, you can't really just hold sphere while they're in shield What I usually do is this whenever I land on them with shield: - If they don't know the matchup, grab/force palm - Once they start buffering grab (usually the first sign of adaptation), spot dodge into force palm - If they become well adapted, it's usually just reading their best options. Cancelling into up tilt is good as it beats grab/roll and buffering a upair/bair usually beats their jump. If they're a character like yoshi you might be better off holding shield and punishing afterwards! This became longer than excpected, but I hope it points you in the right way haha
how are you able to juggle people in the air by getting continuous hits in succession while not falling back down to the ground? ive been trying so hard to practice this and just cant get it to work
Sorry for the late reply on this! The best advice I can give in terms of landing continious fairs into eachother is to just hold towards them fully, or otherwise you won't be close enough to continue it. You'll need to use your double jump after the first fair too :)
Thank you! I'm pretty sure I've listed all of the song names in the video when they're a few seconds into them :) most of the songs used in this comes from the Cloudbuilt ost
You didn’t explain how to b reverse at all though? You said “inputting a direction on the control stick and pressing special afterwards will cause lucario to turn around as he charges his sphere” but this isn’t true. He just continues facing the same direction that the initial movement was in before special was pressed. Can you give a better explanation of how to b reverse please.
That was mentioned during the turn around section which is completely true haha At 22:46 I go into how to b reverse, it's basically the exact opposite inputs. Instead of changing directions and pressing b, you press b first and then change directions
Did asc to down smash end up being a thing? I can rarely get it to increment the combo counter in training mode at even 1/2 speed. Although I'm still new so maybe I just need to practice it more.
Hiya! ASC to downsmash is a thing and it is true, that being said, it's really difficult to do as you need to buffer downsmash pretty quick after ASC and you can't let them stay in ASC for long either! This would be one of the very last things that I would focus on if I were still trying to get used to his ASC combos. Don't fret if it you can't get it consistently, as bair still exists and kills at just about the same percentages :)
Unfortunately it's not something you can control, it all depends on how much aura you have :( What you can do instead is control which way your counter goes with the control stick before it comes out, that way you can avoid going off the stage with it
I'm surprised I didn't inlclude it in the video itself haha The one at the beginning is Cloudbuilt - Spiritwalker. I stuck with the Cloudbuilt OST for the entire video :)
I always use B reverse but never heard of turnaround B. That's unfortunate but I'm happy to learn of it now! Also, for canceling his Aura Sphere charging hitboxes into moves (u-tilt, down smash, etc.) do you lightly tap shield to make him exit charging state? Sephiroth has a similar thing he does where a shield tap makes him cancel Flare without bringing out shield.
At the very least it's an easy thing to learn :) it's the same inputs, just in the opposite order haha And for cancelling it's the exact same thing as that yeah! If you can do it with sephiroth then it's the same for lucario too!
@@JovinusSSB Very cool, thanks! I'm gonna practice more with him later. I used to play cario off and on but after 2 years I want to pick him up permanently. Subbed!
Your lucario guide help me start to learn him I still have a problem I don't get hwo to b reverse and the other RUclips guides don't help me can you make and guide about this one again maby whte you show waht to push when
Hi there :) Sadly I don't think that me covering this further would be able to properly help you here. There are many guides out there that cover it better than I do! I would suggest trying it at a slower speed in training to see if you can get the hang of it. Otherwise I feel it's more important to get the basics down for Lucario rather than trying to learn the tech immediately haha. I'm sure you'll crack it though!
In order to do this you would need to get familiar and comfortable with charge storage cancelling which is covered at 24:15 :) But basically what you're doing is charging the sphere, pressing shield quickly (its easier to do this on the x/y buttons rather than triggers) and then side b -ing immediately afterwards. I hope this helps!
Unfortunately it makes him much more easier to kill in ultimate than it did for him in smash 4 haha. The weight nerf is probably one of the worst things to have happened to him in ult

I've been struggling to fight this character so this is incredibly helpful. Lucario has always been a bit of an enigma to me so this clears up a lot of what I should look for and avoid of his general gameplan.
When it comes to fighting against him, the main key thing you want to focus on it not getting scared really! Make sure to put up alot of pressure or otherwise you'll be letting us have out way :P
Otherwise always keep in mind of what we're trying to do when we're at high percent.
Love your video style. Keep it up you deserve more views
Thank you! As long as it helps some people out there that's what matters most!
Thanks for this. Been picking Lucario back up for wifi. can't play sheik online it hurts my brain. learned a lot of things. would love to see guides on other underused characters.
Playing online can be very painful sometimes haha, I'm glad it was helpful though!
Amazing guide
To put some enlightening on the otherwise stuff, many of the times you use otherwise after saying "or", you don't actually have to add otherwise after using or, I recommend using it as a way to make the script not look so similar in every sentence, so you should use it rarely.
I can't gurantee that it'll change in the future but it's something I can make more of a mental note on
I wouldn't compared myself to Izaw though! That's too much praise :) but I hope to improve even more in the future
@@JovinusSSB
I've heard much worse mics.
Thanks my dude. I was in real need of the charge cancel tech to help improve my movement.
I'm glad it's able to help you! Just try and keep it basic for now with just being able to get it consistently, it'll take time but it gets easier!

@@Chris-oq6qt Here I just did the CSC and did a dash immediately afterwards :) I have shield set to B on my controller so in this case I would just press b quickly -> and then dash afterwards!

I have some other videos going into specifics on Lucario and I'm in the middle of making more so feel free to check those out too if it'll help!
Jovinus I definitely will 👍
I’ve been playing smash at my friends house for about two year I’ve dabbled in lucario hear an there I picked him up in smash ult and I was looking for tech to help me this was exactly what I needed
I hope this helps out! If I were you I would focus on getting comfortable with the movement and with the basic combos he has initially. Focus on all of the fancy tech later once you feel comfortable afterwards. Don't take too much on at the same time :P
This was a very helpful guide. Thanks. Now I just need a Switch with Ultimate.

There's alot of great games on the switch so it would be a worthwhile investment if you're big into games :)

For the first real thing i've ever edited i'm happy with how this turned out. I hope life's been good to you even with the state of the world that we're in right now

Hopefully it continues to be helpful! There's quite a bit to learn with him in order to be the most optimal, but he's always a fun time regardless since his movement is pretty slick. I hope he suits you in the end!
yes i seen them patch notes and i was like yes
The patch nodes made me go yes also :P
I’m going to my first tournament in a little over a month. I have played Lucario a while back but just picked him back up today. This video will definitely help me with my basic knowledge.
Awesome! I actually picked up Lucario a few months and was hoping for buffs (he’s kinda lacking). I was really hoping for a weight buff but increased Aura is pretty fire and bit quicker in moves. Thank you dude!!
Trust me, the fact that downsmash and jab are quicker are so huge for us! Not many players will recognise it but they will once you jab lock them into down smash ;)
@@JovinusSSB how do you feel about the aura changes? All together is it a nice buff? I know the jab is great but I don’t know about the rest.
@@JovinusSSB thanks for the reply! Keep making content, it was really good. Not many Lucario aficionados.
Good work my mans

I haven't seen that film since I was a kid just about! I hope it helps you out alot!
Great stuff, thank you for the work on this video
Thank you for watching! I hope it was useful :)
I certainly tried to make it as easy to understand as possible :) espicially since most people forget he exists in ultimate haha
As for what you've mentioned about his recovery, I did recently make another video covering it in a bit more detail if you want to check it out!

Aww, thank you! I'd like to reach 1k if possible but it'll happen at some point I'm sure :)
I find that quick light tapping shield helps will cancel on controller from Aura. It helps now that I know precisely on how it is done.
I've been at this since the first days of ultimate's release (longer if previous games are counted):
smashboards.com/threads/aura-gym-the-ultimate-players-guide-to-lucario-w-i-p.466160/
The written guide is a little out-of-date and has languished a bit, but I may take some time to update and flesh it out if there's interest.
Hiya and thanks for watching! Big response here so I'll answer as best as I can :)
Both IRARs and attack cancelling can be used to combo down tilt into bair, though IRARs would generally be a better option as it allows for the use of full hopping. What I'm doing in the video is with attack cancelling specifically! I didn't really cover IRARs here as I personally find the inputs much more difficult haha. I'll likely go into more details on IRARs in the future though
For the rest it is correct. I chose not to cover the minor things like sour/sweetspots on certain moves mostly to keep the video at a decent timeframe. I didn't want to have a guide that's longer than 30 minutes covering every little aspect of him haha. When it comes to introductions on new things be it a character or a new concept, less is more :)
The intro is also just that, it would certainly be inappropriate to get into all of the nitty gritty for each matchup here haha!
Thanks again for watching, I hope you continue to keep giving good knowledge on the character! There's not much out there and more knowledge is better for everyone :)
Great work mate this character needs more love.
Thanks you! he's certainly one of the most underrated characters in the entire game, which is saying something since I think we're over 80+ now!

I think you can talk more about bonk, and how steerting upb works(its really important :/, many new players falter there)
There are other techs you can talk about in a semi advanced guide.(though they aren’t as important as the ones above as the ones you mentioned already, again good job, you covered most of the important points)
ASC into ASC into bair
Or
ASC into ASC into ASC into bair(same as above but starts to kill earlier)
Though with dsmash idk if this is as useful, but worth mentioning I guess, does alot more dmg.
Maybe you can also talk about tactics like using the new forcepalm fire and small aura spheres to zone
Also pivot cancel side b will help it gain 2 extra frames which may sometimes help it... actually hit.
And also falling fair combos into bair as a kill confirm

Also fair into aura sphere at high aura

@@MagnificentCreature I didn't even notice this comment! There's definitely alot of things I didn't cover in this video, I chose not to cover most of what you've mention mostly because it's really specific! I didn't want to bloat the video with alot of very niche things with certain moves. I covered the very meat and bones of the character in 30 minutes which I felt was just right for someone wanting to pick Lucario up :)
That being said, I could have definitely covered up B more.
Also here are just abit more stuff
1)Platform tricks and 0-deaths with it
2)Lucario 0 to death(on FD)
3)Baby aura sphere tricks, (how it combos into DA and Ftilt at some ranges)
4)wall jump, wall cling, doing both and maybe more in depth recovering
probably still abit more I missed, but you can always ask the discord I guess? But even if you dont, this video does cover plenty. So well done! Really wished I had seen this sooner

before i played lucario in brawl and wii u and till this day i still play lucario in ultimate
22:30 I don’t get it wouldn’t imputing a direction then pressing special cause lucario to use force palm?
It wouldn't no :)
The best way to think about it is that force palm only comes out if you press b while holding the stick in a direction.
If you press b and then the direction you're instead telling the game "have lucario use neutral special, and then input a direction"
Instead of pressing both b and a direction at the same time, you're doing it one after the other
I hope this makes a bit more sense :)
Did you mention all of Lucario's moves:
-Jab
-Forward tilt
-Up tilt
-Down tilt
-Dash attack
-Forward smash
-Up smash
-Down smash
-Neutral aerial
-Forward aerial
-Back aerial
-Up aerial
-Down aerial
-Grabs
-Special moves
-Final Smash
11:44 fair can combo very well of if u have 2extra jumps
Sick guide bro thanks sm, fun fact tho, mega man dair can be +1 on shield so that might be the safest aerial
Nice video master, too hard to find a lucario guide
There isn't many out there to be fair!
I have been a Diddy Kong solo main since close to launch. But I'm very interested in adding a secondary and I'm convinced that it should be Lucario.
There's only one way to find out! Give the guy a try and see if you enjoy him or not :)
Underrated
For sure! easily top 5 underrrated haha
How would you cancel aura sphere in 29:14?
Very nice stuff
22:01 which B cancel did he do to do up-tilt so quickly after? Didn't see a shield, dodge, or jump occur
Hiya :)
So this can be done by doing what's called a CSC (charge storage cancel). I cover it at 24:14
Basically it just cancels aura sphere without having to do shields, dodges or jumps. If you're quick you can buffer a move afterwards and it'll look like that. I hope this helps!
Got any tips for trying asc’s? In new to lucario Ik he’s not all that great but I wanna play him for fun since he’s my favorite pokemon
Sorry for the late reply! Christmas and all that haha
The big advice I would give is to have jump on a bumper/trigger button and get used to using that really!
Try going into training and doing asc into dair over and over using the bumpers as jump... once you get used to doing it in training then you'll be glad to know that the timing is the exact same for every other aerial!
thanks! great video
Glad it could help you! :)
Rising fair and falling nair are your two main tools in neutral and they both end up either making you airborne or requiring you to be in the air for it to work haha
As for air speeds, lucario is one of the fastest in the game And it's where he really excels! But it's important to stay grounded and use your tilts too, espicially since grab is what we want at low percents :)

I'm a Rosalina and luma main but I want to pick up lucario, my play style is extremely technical I'm scared I can't understand how to play free flow like lucario, should I pick him up?
As someone who plays both lucario and Rosa I can get and pinpoint the main differences here:
- Rosa is more technical than lucario so learning the tech here won't be so bad. The worst thing for you will probably be wavebouncing
- The combo game for both are them are fairly easy, but they are different
- Rosa is more of a flowchart and lucario is more free flow as you've said.
I think the biggest thing for you would be learning the free flow playstyle. I would give him a try and see if you like how he moves and how he plays first before worrying about learning him in depth :)
Theres one thing i dont think was covered in this video, isn't there a way to cancel aura sphere as you hit the floor? Could you maybe make a small video about that
There is a way to do this and it was covered in the video, it's at 24:59 :)

Your lucario is nasty af RESPECT😤
Does anyone know anything about rising short-hop fair into drag-down nair 1 into up tilt or another fair or up air. I’ve labbed it a bit and it seems like it has more potential to deal more damage than just the standard combos. Thoughts?
I'm not able to touch the game (Easter time and all!) But from memory I don't think that will work since the opponents are sent too high for the nair to properly drag down.
That being said, you can definitely fair -> fair -> nair dragdown into more fairs if there's a platform below you!
I sometimes have trouble csc ing with the facing button (X button) bc I forget to press the button faster. Will this improve during muscle memory?
It absolutely will :) I struggled with getting used to b for csc and y for specials for a while myself! Just keep at it and eventually it'll feel more natural!
Thank u so much man I hope ur channel grows
I have questions about aurasphere on shield: Can the opponent role out safely after 11 hits like with rapid jabs? If the opponent tries to jump out will they get hit by the sphere? At high aura, can you always just hold aurasphere and combo after it shield pokes, instead of risking a cancel into force palm or grab which could be punished by a fast attack option from the opponent? Basically, I'm not entirely clear on the full flow chart of options after landing aurasphere on shield.
Hiya! I'll try and answer everything in bullet points below
, some good questions though!
- The opponent would be able to roll out after the first 11 hits yeah and with full invincibility from sphere
- Due to how aura sphere works (it's a hitbox every 8 frames) they're very likely to escape the sphere charge if they jump during it
- For the above two reasons, you can't really just hold sphere while they're in shield
What I usually do is this whenever I land on them with shield:
- If they don't know the matchup, grab/force palm
- Once they start buffering grab (usually the first sign of adaptation), spot dodge into force palm
- If they become well adapted, it's usually just reading their best options. Cancelling into up tilt is good as it beats grab/roll and buffering a upair/bair usually beats their jump. If they're a character like yoshi you might be better off holding shield and punishing afterwards!
This became longer than excpected, but I hope it points you in the right way haha
@@JovinusSSB Brilliant, thanks a lot!
How do your record training mode?
how are you able to juggle people in the air by getting continuous hits in succession while not falling back down to the ground? ive been trying so hard to practice this and just cant get it to work
Sorry for the late reply on this! The best advice I can give in terms of landing continious fairs into eachother is to just hold towards them fully, or otherwise you won't be close enough to continue it. You'll need to use your double jump after the first fair too :)
Great guide! What is the song in the video?
That was mentioned during the turn around section which is completely true haha
At 22:46 I go into how to b reverse, it's basically the exact opposite inputs.
Can anyone answer how to control how far I fly away after a counter? I’ve SD several times from flying off the screen after countering.
Unfortunately it's not something you can control, it all depends on how much aura you have :(
What you can do instead is control which way your counter goes with the control stick before it comes out, that way you can avoid going off the stage with it
@@JovinusSSB thank you! This helps tremendously
@@sivirly6598 no worries, hope it helps a little!
where does the music at the start come from?
I'm surprised I didn't inlclude it in the video itself haha
The one at the beginning is Cloudbuilt - Spiritwalker.
At the very least it's an easy thing to learn :) it's the same inputs, just in the opposite order haha
And for cancelling it's the exact same thing as that yeah! If you can do it with sephiroth then it's the same for lucario too!
@@JovinusSSB Very cool, thanks! I'm gonna practice more with him later. I used to play cario off and on but after 2 years I want to pick him up permanently.
Subbed!

What Percent Does Aura Spere Up Smash Kill??
It entirely depends on aura! Up smash can kill at around 60 at high aura but I would advise learning to combo into bair as it kills just as early
Your lucario guide help me start to learn him I still have a problem I don't get hwo to b reverse and the other RUclips guides don't help me can you make and guide about this one again maby whte you show waht to push when
Hi there :)
Sadly I don't think that me covering this further would be able to properly help you here. There are many guides out there that cover it better than I do!
I would suggest trying it at a slower speed in training to see if you can get the hang of it. Otherwise I feel it's more important to get the basics down for Lucario rather than trying to learn the tech immediately haha. I'm sure you'll crack it though!
I may have missed it. But May I Ask How Did you do Aura Sphere to Side B Instantly?
In order to do this you would need to get familiar and comfortable with charge storage cancelling which is covered at 24:15 :)
But basically what you're doing is charging the sphere, pressing shield quickly (its easier to do this on the x/y buttons rather than triggers) and then side b -ing immediately afterwards. I hope this helps!
His aerials need to be so precise and on point for such a mediocre reward. Idk if it’s worth learning lol
Seems like Lucario worked out between Smash 4 and Ultimate and thus he lost some weight good for you Lucario.
Unfortunately it makes him much more easier to kill in ultimate than it did for him in smash 4 haha. The weight nerf is probably one of the worst things to have happened to him in ult
