A few weeks ago I received an email from Yasir a wet shaver who is part of our community. He went on to explain that he ordered a jar of St James Of London shaving cream but was having skin irritations and thought that I might like to try it and do a review on it since he’s not able to use it going forward. I thanked him for his generous offer and assured him I would indeed do a review. So here as promised is the review on the1953 classic St. James of London Shaving Cream.
The packaging on this product is certainly eye-catching even including the inside of the box. I just love the glass jar. If you only had this in your den it’s designed in such a way to be attractive enough to leave on the counter until your next shave.
The scent on this cream is fantastic Cedarwood & Clarysage formula is the first and original cedarwood-inspired fragrance that provides authentic, yet soothing earthy elements with a hint of spicy pepper and soothing notes of Bay Rose and Geranium. I found this scent to last a long time after the shave which most wet shavings will enjoy.
Forget about bowl lathering you don’t need it with this cream although I’m sure if you wanted to you could. I placed just a small dollop on my fingers and started to apply it and then following it up with a wet brush by working it in with a circular motion right into the beard and before long I was able to great a wonderful lather that provided excellent coverage.
I used a razor rock slant for this shave and being a slant its a little more aggressive than a reg DE razor that being said the shaving cream allowed the slant with greater slickness and glide for a cleaner safer shave without the fear of irritation. My post shave feel was a good one as well.
So my experience with St James of London was a good one and I’m sad that Yasir was not able to continue using it. One would hope he’s able to use another scent because this was a very enjoyable experience.

The 50ml cologne version of St. James of London Cedarwood & Clarysage is very nice. Very similar to Terre D'Hermes.

Excellent shave Don. I've not used St. James of London's creams yet but from what I saw today they are definitely on my list. I have the RazoRock German 37 slant in my collection and it's one of my best DE safety razors in my collection. 2 passes with the grain using an Israeli Personna Red Platinum blade and I'm squeaky clean and that's with a 4 day old beard.

I have been having really great shaves of late with my Rockwell 6c and Phoenix and Beau Albion. Have you tried this soap at all or on camera? Great performance paired with a mesmerising and stimulating scent of Bergamot, Lavender and grapefruit. I could use this one forever!

Cool video and I've been using Parker Semi Slant razor few times and it might be good starter razor for beginners. Will have to check out that soap online to see if they have samples of it for me to try it out as I've always order small samples to test them out before getting full size.
Don, as recently as this morning you can get the Merkur Futur clones for as low as USD$8 delivered. QShave might sell for a dollar or two more. Still, the copies are great value when you consider the Futur itself sells for USD$70 or so.
I have been thinking of a slant. Curious if they are as aggressive as the naked armor razor?
